For straightforward PS5 streaming, PlayStation Portal is the better fit. It is Sony’s purpose-built Remote Play device, with integrated PlayStation controls and official support. Steam Deck is the more capable all-round handheld PC, but Sony does not list it as a compatible Remote Play device, so PS5 streaming on it requires an unofficial approach. Your choice therefore depends on whether you want a dedicated PS5 companion or a broader handheld gaming computer.
The short answer
Choose PlayStation Portal when your main goal is to pick up a handheld and play games installed on your PS5 with the least ambiguity about compatibility. Sony documents Portal Remote Play, specifies its network requirements, and builds the controls around DualSense features.

Choose Steam Deck when you primarily want a handheld for Steam games and are willing to treat PS5 streaming as a separate, unofficial project. What each device is actually doing
Portal Remote Play streams from your own PS5
Sony describes Portal as a device that streams compatible games installed on a PS5 over Wi-Fi. For ordinary Remote Play, you need a PS5 and a PlayStation account. The console must be online, paired with the device, and either powered on or in Rest Mode. The game runs on the PS5; Portal displays the stream and sends your control input back to the console. Sony’s PlayStation Portal product information and PS Remote Play guide describe this model.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus. A particular game’s online multiplayer features may still require the membership that game normally needs. Portal Remote Play connects to PS5, not PS4, according to Sony’s compatibility information.
Steam Deck is a handheld PC, not a Sony Remote Play client
Valve positions Steam Deck as a handheld designed for Steam games. Its Steam Remote Play service is about receiving a gameplay session from a host computer. That is different from Sony’s PS Remote Play service, which has its own supported-device list.
Sony lists PlayStation Portal, mobile devices, Windows PC, Mac and certain Android TV devices for PS Remote Play; Steam Deck is not on that list. The official sources therefore do not establish Steam Deck as an officially supported PS5 Remote Play endpoint. A Linux-based third-party method may exist, but it would be unofficial, can change as software is updated, and is not documented here as a specific setup to recommend.

How to use Portal for PS5 Remote Play
The process is simple, but every condition matters because Portal is receiving a live stream rather than running the PS5 game locally.
- Prepare the account. Sign in to the PlayStation account you use on the PS5 and Portal.
- Prepare the console. Enable Remote Play on the PS5, keep the console connected to the internet, and pair it with Portal. If you want to wake the console remotely, leave it in Rest Mode with the relevant network features enabled.
- Install or update the game on the PS5. Portal streams compatible games installed on that console; it is not a substitute for owning or installing the game.
- Connect Portal to Wi-Fi. Sony states that broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are service requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or latency.
- Start Remote Play from Portal. Select the connected PS5 and choose a compatible game. The console supplies the game image while Portal returns your controls.
- Use the built-in controls. Supported games can use Portal’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Features remain dependent on what the individual game supports.
- Choose audio. Use the 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones or a compatible PlayStation Link wireless device. Sony identifies PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite among the PlayStation Link options.
If the PS5 is completely powered off, ordinary Remote Play cannot start it. The console needs to be on or in Rest Mode and reachable through the network. Sony’s Remote Play support page is the current reference for account, console and network setup.
What PS5 play on Steam Deck involves
Steam Deck can be an excellent Steam library handheld, but buying one does not itself provide an officially supported Sony Remote Play feature. Sony’s supported-device documentation omits Steam Deck, while Valve’s Steam Remote Play help page discusses a host computer streaming to a connected device rather than a PS5-to-Deck arrangement.
That distinction affects setup and troubleshooting:
- You would need to find and maintain an unofficial software path for the Deck’s Linux-based environment.
- Compatibility may depend on updates to the PS5, account authentication, the client software and the Deck operating system.
- Sony’s published 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation are stated for its Remote Play service; the cited sources do not publish a separate Deck threshold.
- There is no official Sony support promise for a Deck-specific problem, and the sources do not establish a particular third-party application or configuration as reliable.
If PS5 streaming is the deciding feature, this uncertainty is the central trade-off: Steam Deck offers flexibility, but Portal offers a documented product path. If Steam games are the deciding feature, Deck’s native purpose is the stronger reason to buy it, with PS5 streaming treated as experimental rather than guaranteed.

Portal cloud streaming is different from Remote Play
On November 5, 2025, Sony officially launched cloud streaming on Portal for PlayStation Plus Premium members. This is not the PS5 Remote Play connection described above. Cloud streaming can continue when your PS5 is powered off or another account is using the console, because the game is streamed from Sony’s cloud service rather than from your own hardware.
Sony says Premium members can stream select digital PS5 games from their own library, plus eligible titles in the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Eligibility applies on a game-by-game basis, so it is not accurate to say that every PS5 game can be streamed. The feature also remains subject to membership and network conditions.

“PlayStation Plus Premium members can now stream select digital PS5 games from their own library.”
— Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager, Product Management at PlayStation, PlayStation Blog, November 5, 2025
Sony also describes cloud streaming as a way to play alongside someone using the PS5 under another account or to keep playing while someone else watches a movie on the console. Those examples explain why cloud streaming expands Portal’s use, but they do not remove game-eligibility or subscription requirements. See the full announcement at PlayStation Blog.
Screen, controls and audio: what the specifications tell you
Display
Portal has the larger cited display: an 8-inch 1080p LCD capable of up to 60 fps. Steam Deck’s cited specification is a 7-inch 1,280 × 800 touchscreen with a 60 Hz refresh rate. The figures describe panel size, resolution and refresh capability; they do not prove that one device produces lower streaming latency or better image quality. No named independent head-to-head test establishing those outcomes is available in the cited material.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControls
Portal’s controls are built around the DualSense feature set. Sony states that haptic feedback and adaptive triggers work in supported games. That makes Portal’s control behavior predictable for PS5 titles designed around those features, although the game still determines which effects are used.
Steam Deck supplies its own handheld controls for Steam games. When it is used for an unofficial PS5 stream, the exact mapping and feature support depend on the software path rather than on a Sony-supported integration. The official sources do not establish equivalent adaptive-trigger or haptic behavior for that arrangement.
Audio
Portal supports wired headphones through a 3.5 mm jack and wireless audio through PlayStation Link devices, including Sony’s PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite. Valve’s cited Steam Deck specification lists Bluetooth 5.0, but it does not describe a particular PS5-streaming audio experience. On Deck, audio behavior will depend on the client, operating system and accessory combination.

Network expectations and latency
Streaming quality is constrained by the connection between the handheld, the internet and the host or cloud service. Sony requires at least 5 Mbps broadband Wi-Fi for Portal Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Sony also warns that the actual experience varies with network quality.
Those numbers are thresholds, not comparative performance scores. They do not show that Portal is faster than Steam Deck, nor do they predict your home’s latency, image stability or responsiveness. The official material reviewed contains no controlled, named comparison of latency, image quality, reliability or preference between the two devices. Any claim that one is universally smoother would go beyond the evidence.
For Portal, test the connection where you intend to play, keep the PS5 reachable online, and check whether the problem occurs only during Remote Play or also during other network activity. If the connection falls below Sony’s stated minimum or fluctuates heavily, changing handhelds will not remove that bottleneck. For an unofficial Deck setup, first determine whether the issue is the network, the client software or the compatibility layer; there is no Sony-supported Deck diagnostic path to substitute.
Which device fits your use case?
| If your priority is… | More suitable choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing your PS5 library away from the television with minimal setup | PlayStation Portal | It is Sony’s official Remote Play device, with documented console pairing and network requirements. |
| Using the PS5 while it is off or occupied by another account | PlayStation Portal with eligible Premium cloud streaming | Cloud streaming can work without the console actively supplying the stream, but only selected PS5 games are eligible. |
| Playing a broad Steam library natively on a handheld | Steam Deck | Valve designed it around Steam games and publishes its own handheld specifications. |
| Having one device for PC gaming, desktop-style software and experimentation | Steam Deck | Its handheld-PC design is broader than Portal’s dedicated PS5 role. |
| Guaranteed Sony support for the PS5 streaming feature | PlayStation Portal | Steam Deck is not listed by Sony as a compatible PS Remote Play device. |
| Choosing based on proven latency or image-quality superiority | Neither can be selected from the cited evidence alone | No controlled independent head-to-head statistic is provided. |
Costs, subscriptions and what is not included
The cited material does not establish current retail prices, regional promotions or merchant listings, so price cannot be used as a verified differentiator here. Portal is a remote player, not a PS5 bundle: buying it does not include a PS5 or the games installed on that console.
For ordinary Portal Remote Play, PlayStation Plus is not required. Cloud streaming on Portal requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited to eligible games. A game’s multiplayer requirement is separate from the Remote Play connection itself.

Common failure points
Portal cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that the PS5 is online and paired with the PlayStation account used on Portal.
- For a console that is not fully powered on, verify that it is in Rest Mode rather than shut down.
- Check the Wi-Fi connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; Sony recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience.
- Confirm that the game is installed on the PS5 and is compatible with PS5 Remote Play.
The stream is unstable or unresponsive
- Measure the connection at the place where Portal is being used, not only beside the router.
- Compare performance at a less congested time; Sony notes that network quality affects the experience.
- Do not treat the 15 Mbps recommendation as a latency guarantee. A connection can meet a throughput figure and still have delay or interference.
A Deck setup stops working after an update
Because Sony does not list Steam Deck as a supported Remote Play device, an unofficial client can break when the operating system, client, account authentication or PS5 software changes. Recheck the project’s current compatibility information and separate software errors from network symptoms before changing hardware. The official sources do not identify one third-party Deck application as a supported solution.
Bottom-line decision
For the narrow question “Which is better for playing PS5 games remotely?”, choose PlayStation Portal. It is the only option here with Sony-documented PS5 Remote Play support, DualSense-based controls, stated network requirements and an additional official cloud-streaming mode for Premium members.
Choose Steam Deck instead when the larger purchase decision is about owning a versatile Steam handheld and PS5 streaming is optional. Deck may suit that broader role, but Sony’s documentation does not promise that its Remote Play service will work on the device, and the cited evidence cannot support a claim that either handheld has lower latency or superior image quality in a controlled comparison.
