Short answer: a Steam Deck “DLSS mod” does not run NVIDIA’s native DLSS runtime. Community projects use compatibility layers such as OptiScaler and DLSS-to-FSR components to redirect a game’s DLSS calls into AMD FSR upscaling or frame-generation paths. An in-game DLSS selector can therefore be the switch that activates a replacement implementation, not proof that native DLSS is running.

That distinction matters when you choose a game, estimate performance, or troubleshoot a crash. Compatibility is per game, graphics API, mod version and launch configuration; there is no universal supported-games list or guaranteed FPS increase.

What a Steam Deck “DLSS mod” actually does

It translates or replaces calls rather than enabling native DLSS

Steam Deck hardware does not provide NVIDIA’s proprietary DLSS execution path. The community tools documented for Linux and Steam Deck intercept the game’s expected DLSS calls and route them to another implementation, usually an FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 pathway exposed through OptiScaler or a related compatibility layer.

The practical result can look like DLSS from inside the game: you may select DLSS in the graphics menu, and the mod uses that selection as an entry point. Internally, however, the image reconstruction is being handled by the replacement runtime. Treat “DLSS enabled” in a modded game as a configuration label, not hardware verification.

Two different capabilities are often grouped together

  • Upscaling replacement: the mod renders the game below the display resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image through an FSR-family path.
  • Frame generation: the runtime creates interpolated frames between rendered frames. These extra frames can make motion look smoother, but they do not advance the game simulation or create the same input response as a genuinely rendered frame.

Decky Framegen describes itself as a Steam Deck plugin for applying OptiScaler upscaling and frame-generation modifications. Its documentation includes replacing DLSS calls with FSR 3 or 3.1 paths, installing and managing per-game patches, and exposing OptiScaler settings. It also documents experimental OptiFG support for adding frame generation to games that have no existing frame-generation path. That OptiFG feature should be considered an experiment, not a routine way to add modern frame generation to any title.

Which games work?

Documented examples are not guarantees

A separate Linux and Steam Deck project uses an FSR 3.1 workaround and demonstrates setup with Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Those examples show games for which the project documented a procedure; they are not certification that every current build, Proton version, Deck model or graphics setting will work.

The same project records a Vulkan-related frame-generation limitation in Red Dead Redemption 2. It describes a separate DLSS-only workaround, so a reader should not assume that its frame-generation route works simply because another upscaling mode does.

Game or case What the documentation establishes What it does not establish
Hogwarts Legacy Used as a setup example by the Linux/Steam Deck FSR 3.1 project. Universal compatibility with every project version, API or Deck configuration.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Used as another setup example by that project. A guaranteed result after a game update or with a different injector.
Red Dead Redemption 2 A Vulkan-related frame-generation issue is documented; a DLSS-only workaround is described separately. That frame generation works on its Vulkan path, or that the limitation applies identically to every mod.
Other games Compatibility may be reported by users in the DLSS-to-FSR3 compatibility wiki. An official, current support guarantee.

How to read community compatibility lists

The DLSS-to-FSR3 compatibility wiki labels entries as working, unreported or uncheckable, and not working. It is user-reported rather than an official test matrix, and its mirrored copy shows a last-modified date of February 8, 2025. Game patches can invalidate an older report, while a change in OptiScaler, Proton, graphics API or launch options can produce a different result on the same title.

Before patching, check the current project documentation and recent game-specific reports. Record the game version, API (DirectX-to-Vulkan or native Vulkan), mod version and runtime selected by the installer. Those details are more useful than a bare “works” label.

Performance, latency and image quality

There is no dependable universal FPS figure

The available material does not establish a controlled Steam Deck benchmark, a universal uplift or a fixed performance cost. The compatibility wiki refers to a single-system measurement and warns that it is only one measurement. It should not be converted into a promise that a Deck will gain a particular multiplier or reach a target frame rate.

When evaluating a mod, separate four measurements:

  • Base or rendered FPS: frames the game itself actually renders.
  • Displayed FPS: rendered frames plus any interpolated frames shown by the frame-generation path.
  • Frame time and consistency: whether pacing remains stable rather than merely showing a larger counter.
  • Input response: how quickly controls affect a newly rendered game frame.

Frame generation can increase the displayed count without increasing the underlying simulation rate. A game rendering at a low base rate may therefore look smoother while still feeling limited by its original input cadence. The reviewed sources do not provide enough controlled Deck measurements to quantify the latency trade-off, so claims such as “double your FPS” are not justified.

Artifacts are a game-by-game trade-off

Upscaling and interpolation can produce ghosting, halos, disocclusion errors or smearing around fast-moving objects. The compatibility wiki says choosing DLAA instead of DLSS can minimize, but not eliminate, artifacts or ghosting in many cases. That is project guidance, not a guarantee: DLAA may alter the workload and image characteristics, and individual games can behave differently.

Compare a mod against the game’s native FSR option at the same output resolution and a similar base frame rate. Look at foliage, thin geometry, particles, HUD elements, rapid camera pans and objects crossing the player. A higher displayed counter is not automatically better image quality.

Choosing a path before you patch

Decision What you are comparing Evidence available
Native game FSR vs DLSS-to-FSR replacement The game’s supported FSR integration versus an injected compatibility layer that uses a DLSS selector or call path. No controlled, universal Deck ranking; test the title’s own implementation first.
Upscaling only vs frame generation Lower render resolution and reconstruction versus interpolated display frames. Frame generation may look smoother but does not equal more simulation or input responsiveness.
Runtime and graphics API OptiScaler/runtime choice, Proton path, DirectX translation or Vulkan, and game launch options. Compatibility can change with each variable; RDR2’s documented Vulkan issue is an example.
Image quality vs displayed FPS Artifacts, ghosting and pacing versus the number shown by an overlay. No source-supported universal best setting; inspect the game at your target resolution.

What to check before installing

  • Confirm that the game is on a current build and note whether it uses DirectX through a translation layer or native Vulkan.
  • Read the current README for the exact project you intend to use. Decky Framegen and the separate manual Linux project do not have interchangeable files or procedures.
  • Disable overlays temporarily if you need a clean baseline. The compatibility wiki specifically recommends trying without overlays during troubleshooting.
  • Back up or verify the game files so you can restore the original state after an unsuccessful patch.
  • Decide whether you want upscaling, frame generation, or both; enabling every experimental option at once makes failures harder to isolate.

Decky Framegen installation approach

Decky Framegen’s documented flow is version-sensitive. Use the current project README for the exact runtime names, environment variables and launch-option syntax; do not copy a command from an older guide without checking that it matches your installed release.

  1. Install Decky Loader and the plugin. Add Decky Framegen through Decky Loader using the project’s current installation method, then restart the relevant Deck services if the plugin does not appear.
  2. Set up OptiScaler. In the plugin, select the documented OptiScaler package or runtime for your release. Keep track of which compatibility path you selected.
  3. Choose the game. Use the plugin’s per-game controls to patch that title rather than applying files globally. The plugin documentation describes both patch and unpatch operations.
  4. Apply the required launch configuration. Add the launch options and environment variables shown for your exact plugin/runtime version. These values can change between releases.
  5. Enable the corresponding in-game option. If the guide says to select DLSS, FSR or a specific frame-generation switch, use that setting exactly. The selected label may invoke the replacement path.
  6. Test with a baseline. Run the game first with overlays and optional injectors disabled, then compare base frame rate, pacing, visible artifacts and controls before changing additional settings.

Manual Linux and Steam Deck workaround approach

The separate Linux/Steam Deck project documents manual package extraction, DLL placement and game-specific launch options. Its instructions are not a drop-in alternative to Decky Framegen’s managed installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read that project’s current README and identify the game-specific section.
  2. Place only the files named for your game in the directory specified by that project; do not assume a DLL belongs in the game root if the guide names a subdirectory.
  3. Use the launch options supplied for that project and game. Options written for one injector may conflict with another.
  4. Launch once with the documented baseline settings, then enable the in-game replacement option.
  5. If the title fails, follow the project’s removal instructions before trying a different DLL arrangement or runtime.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game crashes or will not start

Undo the patch using the project’s own unpatch or removal procedure. Confirm the game build, runtime and graphics API, then test without overlays. A crash does not prove that Steam Deck hardware is incompatible; an injector conflict, stale DLL or mismatched launch option can be responsible.

The DLSS or frame-generation option is missing

Check that the game actually exposes the option expected by the mod and that the patch targeted the correct executable. Recheck the plugin/runtime combination and launch configuration. Some tools replace existing DLSS calls; experimental OptiFG paths may require a different setup and are not available in every title.

The game launches but the image is unstable

Compare native FSR, replacement upscaling and frame generation separately. Inspect fast motion and fine detail, and try the wiki’s suggested DLAA selection if the game exposes it. DLAA can reduce artifacts in many cases but cannot guarantee a clean image.

Red Dead Redemption 2 behaves differently on Vulkan

Use the project’s documented Vulkan caveat as a diagnostic clue. Do not apply a frame-generation launch recipe written for another API. If the project lists a DLSS-only workaround, treat that as a separate capability from frame generation.

How to remove a patch safely

  1. Open the same tool that applied the patch and use its per-game unpatch or removal command.
  2. For a manual installation, reverse the exact file-placement steps in that project’s README; remove only files it identifies as mod files.
  3. Restore launch options and environment variables to their pre-mod state.
  4. Verify the game installation through Steam if files were replaced or the game still fails to launch.
  5. Start the unmodified game once before testing another injector or runtime.

Keeping one clean baseline prevents overlapping DLLs and launch settings from making a later diagnosis impossible.

FAQ

Does DLSS really run on Steam Deck?

No. These community mods substitute an FSR-family implementation or another compatibility path for the game’s expected DLSS calls; they do not provide NVIDIA’s native DLSS runtime.

Will the mod increase FPS?

It may change render workload or displayed frame count, but the available evidence does not support a universal Steam Deck uplift or a promised multiplier. Measure base FPS, displayed FPS, pacing and input response separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can frame generation make a slow game feel responsive?

It can make motion appear smoother by inserting frames, but interpolated frames do not advance simulation or remove the latency associated with the underlying rendered frame.

Are the compatibility-wiki entries official?

No. They are user reports grouped by working, unreported or uncheckable, and not-working status. The mirrored wiki shows a February 8, 2025 modification date, so verify reports against current builds.

Should I install Decky Framegen and the manual workaround together?

No. They are separate projects with different injection and file-management procedures. Remove one cleanly before testing the other.
