Start with the game’s Steam Deck badge. Verified should work comfortably with the built-in controls and display; Playable can work but may need a community layout, touchscreen input, or another manual adjustment; Unsupported is currently non-functional; and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. The badge is a current compatibility snapshot, not a permanent guarantee, so also check controls, text, launchers, Proton-based middleware, and online-service requirements before you commit to a purchase or download.
What the Steam Deck compatibility labels mean
Valve assigns four labels in the Steam store and library. They are useful as a first filter, but each label describes a different amount of user effort rather than a simple yes-or-no statement.

These labels can change when a game, its launcher, anti-cheat service, middleware, or Proton changes. A title that is Playable today can become Verified after an update, while a change in an online service can introduce a new failure.

How to check whether the controls will work
What Verified requires
Valve’s Verified criteria require full controller support. That means the core game can be played with the Deck’s controls rather than demanding a keyboard and mouse for ordinary play. The game should also show the correct controller icons: an on-screen prompt should match the button you actually press instead of displaying keyboard keys or the wrong layout.

When text entry is required, Verified software should bring up the Deck’s on-screen keyboard automatically. This matters for names, passwords, search boxes, chat, and launcher fields. A game that runs but leaves you hunting for a physical keyboard may be more accurately treated as Playable.
Change a layout for one game
Steam lets you change controls per title rather than changing the entire Deck. Open the game’s details page in your library, select the controller or input settings, and choose a different layout. You can select a recommended or community layout, edit individual buttons, add rear-button bindings, or create a mode shift for menus and gameplay.
Use a community layout when the game technically accepts a controller but has awkward defaults. Read its description before applying it: some layouts map a trackpad to a mouse, put keyboard shortcuts on the back buttons, or assume a particular sensitivity. If a layout fixes movement but breaks menus, keep the original as a backup and edit only the problem bindings.

- Prompts show keyboard keys even though a gamepad is active.
- A launcher accepts only mouse clicks or touchscreen taps.
- Important actions are unavailable without a keyboard.
- The game detects the Deck’s controls but loses them after a launcher or scene transition.
- Menus require a pointer while gameplay uses a controller.
Those symptoms do not automatically mean the game cannot run. They indicate setup work, which is why Valve can classify a functioning title as Playable instead of Verified.

Text size, resolution, and contrast
The Deck’s default display resolution is 1280×800 or 1280×720, depending on how a game presents its image. Valve’s requirement is explicit: “The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.” A game can launch successfully and still fall short if menus or subtitles are too small to read at that resolution.
What to adjust first
- Open the game’s own display or accessibility menu and look for UI scale, subtitle size, dialogue size, or HUD scaling.
- Enable a high-contrast mode, larger cursor, subtitle background, or outline if the game offers one.
- Check the SteamOS display scaling and the game’s resolution together; changing one can make another setting appear unexpectedly small or blurry.
- Test a real gameplay scene, not only the title screen. Inventory grids, tooltips, and map labels are often less readable than the main menu.
Valve’s Steamworks recommendations encourage developers to support user-configurable text size and, where possible, contrast. If the UI is fixed-size, a game may remain Playable even when the rendering itself is stable. A magnifier or desktop-mode workaround can help in a pinch, but it does not turn a fixed, tiny interface into a comfortable Verified experience.
Launchers: the hidden compatibility step
A separate launcher is part of the Deck experience. Valve’s Verified standard expects required launcher functions to be usable with a controller, and Valve recommends putting necessary functionality in the game client instead of forcing players through a launcher.

What a good launcher experience looks like
- The launcher opens without a desktop mouse.
- Focus moves predictably between fields and buttons.
- Login and text fields summon the on-screen keyboard.
- You can start, update, configure, and exit the game using the Deck controls.
- The launcher does not hide behind another window or lose controller focus.
If a launcher requires a touchscreen or mouse, the underlying game may still run. Treat that as a setup caveat: you might tap through one screen at every launch, connect a mouse temporarily, or avoid the launcher by using a supported launch option. Do not infer from a successful first start that every later login, patch, or account prompt will be controller-friendly.

Using Desktop Mode when Game Mode is not enough
Steam Support states, “While in Desktop Mode, Steam Deck functions like a normal PC.” In Desktop Mode you can browse, install applications, connect peripherals, and run programs outside Steam. It is the practical route for software and launchers designed for a conventional desktop rather than a gamepad-first interface.
Desktop Mode is not a guarantee that a game will work. It simply gives you a mouse, keyboard, and desktop windows for setup. After installing or signing in, return to Game Mode and test the complete launch sequence you expect to use. If the title needs desktop interaction every time, it is better classified as a convenience issue than as a seamless Deck experience.
Why Windows games run through Proton
Many Deck games do not have a native Linux build. Steam runs those Windows versions through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. Valve’s review therefore considers not only the game executable but also its middleware: the components that handle video, audio, launchers, account systems, and other services.
Why two similar games can behave differently
Compatibility depends on more than graphics performance. Middleware can call Windows features that Proton implements imperfectly. A launcher can fail before the game starts. An anti-cheat system can block online sessions even when single-player loads. A game update can change its behavior, and a different Proton version can fix one problem while introducing another.

This is why a badge should be read as a dated snapshot. If a Verified title stops working after an update, check whether the developer, anti-cheat provider, or Proton version changed before assuming the Deck hardware is defective. Conversely, an Unknown title may work well, but you will need to accept the risk of finding out yourself.
What to try when Proton behavior changes
- Install pending SteamOS and game updates, then restart the Deck.
- In the game’s properties, test the default Proton selection first; only switch versions when a specific compatibility problem justifies it.
- Record whether the failure occurs before the launcher, after login, or only when joining an online session.
- Check the game’s current community reports for a known launcher, middleware, or anti-cheat issue.
Changing Proton is a troubleshooting step, not a universal upgrade. Keep the version that produces reliable launches and the online features you actually need.

Valve’s rule is straightforward: “Just like a PC, you’ll need to be online to download games and play online multiplayer games.” An installed game can generally be played offline unless its developer requires an internet connection for activation, account checks, synchronization, or gameplay.
What to test before travelling
- Install the game while connected.
- Launch it once online and complete any account or first-run setup.
- Close Steam, enable offline mode, and start the game again.
- Open the single-player mode, save progress, and load that save.
- If the game uses an external launcher, repeat the test after a full restart; cached credentials may expire.
Online multiplayer adds another compatibility layer. A game can be Verified for its controls and still require an internet connection, a supported anti-cheat service, or a particular account login for multiplayer. Valve encourages developers to make single-player content available without internet, but that is guidance rather than a promise for every title.

A practical compatibility check before you install
Use this sequence when the badge alone does not answer your question:
- Read the label. Treat Verified as the lowest-effort path; treat Playable and Unknown as requiring investigation.
- Check the control needs. Look for controller prompts, keyboard-heavy menus, and any required community layout.
- Inspect the text. Confirm that the game offers readable UI at 1280×800 or 1280×720 and provides scaling or contrast options where possible.
- Identify launchers. Determine whether a separate sign-in or update window appears and whether it can be navigated without a mouse.
- Consider Proton dependencies. Look for middleware, anti-cheat, or launcher requirements that can change independently of the game itself.
- Decide your network mode. Separate “can launch offline” from “can play online”; they are different tests.
- Test your actual routine. Start the game from Game Mode, use the controls you intend to use, enter text, change a setting, and quit normally.
Common failure symptoms and targeted fixes

Battery expectations while judging compatibility
Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet gives a broad estimate of 2–8 hours per charge depending on the game. That is not a compatibility score and should not be treated as a fixed runtime for every model, setting, or title. A game that is technically Verified can still draw more power than a lightweight indie game because of frame rate, resolution, shaders, or background services.
When evaluating a Playable game, test the battery behavior during the activity you care about: a launcher-heavy title, a demanding multiplayer match, and a simple offline session can produce different results. Lowering frame rate or graphics settings may extend a session, but those changes address endurance rather than controller, text, launcher, or network compatibility.

Choose Verified when you want a console-like start: controller-complete menus, correct prompts, readable text, and no mandatory desktop detour. Choose Playable when you are comfortable making a documented adjustment and the trade-off is acceptable. Treat Unknown as an experiment with no guaranteed outcome, and treat Unsupported as a reason to wait unless you have a specific, well-tested workaround.
The most reliable answer comes from matching the test to your use. For a single-player trip, offline launch and readable menus matter more than multiplayer services. For competitive online play, anti-cheat and network login are decisive even if the controls are perfect. For a family member with limited vision, configurable text and contrast may matter more than a badge. The label starts the decision; the complete launch, play, and recovery routine finishes it.
