Before buying a Steam game for Steam Deck, open its current Steam store listing and inspect more than the compatibility badge. Read the rating details, verify controller support, check the accessibility features you need, and look for title-specific notes about launchers, online services, or anti-cheat. Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system, and many Windows games run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, so ordinary Windows system requirements do not tell the whole story.
The rating is useful evidence, not a permanent guarantee. Valve describes compatibility ratings as snapshots that can change when a developer updates a game or Valve changes Proton. Recheck the live listing shortly before purchase and treat any performance, battery-life, or online-play expectation as a separate question.
What the Steam Deck compatibility rating actually tells you
Steam displays a Steam Deck compatibility rating on game listings. Valve says the rating communicates the kind of experience you should expect on Deck, and the same compatibility status can be used when filtering your Steam library. Start with that rating, but do not treat the icon as a complete technical specification.
Valve’s program evaluates practical usability rather than only whether a game launches. Its published criteria have included controller behavior and other details that affect whether a title feels usable on a handheld. For example, Valve’s March 4, 2022 update explained that inconsistent controller prompts could result in a game being classified as Playable rather than Verified. Valve also cautions that a rating is time-sensitive. In that update it wrote: “Whenever we talk about compatibility rating numbers, we emphasize that this is just a snapshot of a single moment, and that ratings change over time.” A game can receive a patch, its launcher can change, Proton can improve, or a previously working online component can be altered. The current store listing therefore takes precedence over an old video, forum post, or screenshot.
Verified and Playable are different signals

Steam Deck compatibility check: the exact pre-purchase sequence
Use this sequence on the game’s live Steam store page. It works in a desktop browser, the Steam client, or the Deck’s store interface, although the placement of controls can differ by screen size.

- Find the Steam Deck compatibility area. Locate the Deck rating shown on the listing. Do not stop after seeing the category icon; open or expand the rating details so you can read Valve’s qualification.
- Record the practical caveat. Note whether the detail mentions controller prompts, text entry, a launcher, a virtual keyboard, small text, manual configuration, or another interaction that could be awkward on a handheld. A qualification that is harmless for a turn-based game may be decisive for a fast action game.
- Inspect controller support separately. Steam exposes controller-support information as a separate store attribute. Check whether the game is described as having full controller support or whether it relies on touch input, trackpads, keyboard commands, or mouse interaction. The Deck rating does not replace this check.
- Review accessibility attributes. Look for the subtitle, text, color, remapping, or other accessibility features that matter to you. Steam presents accessibility information separately from Deck compatibility, so a favorable Deck badge does not confirm that your personal requirements are met.
- Check online dependencies. For a multiplayer or always-connected title, look for current developer or store notices about required online services and anti-cheat. Valve’s general compatibility material cannot establish the present status of a particular game’s online systems.
- Match the evidence to your target. If you require a specific frame-rate range, battery duration, graphics preset, mod setup, or patch behavior, seek current evidence for that exact title and version. The store rating does not provide a universal performance or battery guarantee.
- Recheck immediately before purchase. Ratings and their explanations can change. Refresh the listing on the day you buy, especially if the game has recently received a major update or you are relying on online play.
Why Windows requirements are not enough
SteamOS is Linux-based. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allows many games built for Windows to run on SteamOS, even when the developer does not provide a native Linux build. Valve describes this relationship on its SteamOS game-compatibility page.
That extra software layer is why a game can meet its published Windows CPU, memory, and graphics requirements yet still be a poor Deck purchase. The game may launch through Proton but expose a mouse-only menu, show incorrect controller prompts, fail at a required launcher step, or depend on an online component that does not behave as expected. Conversely, a Windows-only title can work well on Deck when its input and runtime behavior fit the SteamOS environment.

Think of Windows requirements as a baseline for the game’s original platform, not as a Deck certification. The store rating and its detail are Valve’s current compatibility signal; controller, accessibility, and online checks answer the questions that the badge cannot.
Read the detail behind the badge
A category compresses several tests into one label. The detail tells you what Valve found and whether the issue affects normal play or only an optional feature.

Check whether menus, gameplay, and common actions can be completed with the Deck’s controls. Inconsistent on-screen prompts can force you to translate keyboard keys while playing. Valve has specifically identified inconsistent controller prompts as an example of a qualification that can separate Playable from Verified.
Also consider games that are technically controllable but designed around a mouse. Strategy, simulation, card, and management titles may require frequent pointer movement, precise clicking, or text entry. Trackpads and the touchscreen can help, but they change the experience and may not suit every player.
Launchers and text entry
Some games open a separate launcher, account screen, or configuration dialog before gameplay. If the compatibility detail mentions a launcher or keyboard, decide whether you are comfortable using the touchscreen, an on-screen keyboard, or an external keyboard. A one-time setup inconvenience is different from a control you must use every session.

Display and readability
Read any note about small text, videos, or desktop-oriented interfaces in the rating details. A game can run correctly while still being uncomfortable on a small screen. If readable subtitles or interface text are essential, verify the game’s accessibility attributes and look for current title-specific screenshots or documentation rather than assuming the Deck rating answers the question.

Controller support is a separate buying decision
Steam’s search and store interface provides distinct filters for Deck compatibility, controller support, and accessibility features. You can see the available filters in Steam’s store search. These attributes overlap, but none substitutes for the others.

When comparing two purchases, evaluate the combination rather than ranking one badge above every other factor. A Playable title with excellent controller support may be a better fit for you than a Verified title whose text is too small or whose accessibility options are missing.
Accessibility checks to make before paying
Steam lists accessibility features as separate store attributes. Use those attributes to create a personal checklist instead of assuming that a game labeled Verified will include the options you need.
- Subtitles and dialogue: confirm that subtitles are available if you depend on them, and look for information about subtitle size or readability where the listing provides it.
- Text and interface: check whether the game offers readable text, scalable UI, or settings that reduce visual clutter when those features are important to you.
- Input flexibility: look for remapping or alternative control options if you cannot use every default button or trigger.
- Color and visual cues: verify any color-related options you require; a general compatibility badge does not describe them.
- Continuous interaction: distinguish a game that supports an accessible setup during play from one that only permits a keyboard or mouse during initial configuration.
If an essential feature is not listed, treat that as unconfirmed rather than assuming it exists. Search the game’s current documentation or community support only for that specific question, and check the version date of any answer you rely on.

Online play and anti-cheat require title-specific evidence
Online compatibility is especially changeable. A multiplayer game can launch and pass basic controls while still failing at login, matchmaking, voice, or anti-cheat initialization. Valve’s March 2022 compatibility update discussed developers working on anti-cheat support, but that general statement does not establish the current behavior of any individual game.
For an online purchase, inspect the game’s current store notices and developer documentation for required online features or anti-cheat. Look for a statement that addresses Steam Deck or Proton specifically and note its date. If the listing is silent, do not convert that silence into a promise that online play works.
Separate the questions: “Can the game start?” “Can I connect to the service?” and “Can I play the mode I intend to use?” A favorable Deck category mainly addresses the expected usability of the tested experience; it is not a service-level guarantee.
How to judge a rating against your own tolerance
Use the following decision framework after reading the listing details. The right choice depends on how much setup and compromise you accept.

Buying from the badge alone
The badge is a starting point. Open the details because the qualification often contains the information that determines whether the game suits your controls or screen.

Assuming Verified means a fixed future experience
Valve says ratings can change as games and compatibility support evolve. Recheck the live listing near purchase and after a major game update if the title matters to you.
Using Windows system requirements as a Deck test
Those requirements describe the game’s Windows target. They do not evaluate Proton behavior, controller prompts, launcher interaction, or SteamOS-specific issues.
Confusing launch success with a usable game
A title may open while requiring a mouse for menus, a keyboard for text entry, or a workaround for an online service. Evaluate the complete path from launch to the activity you actually intend to perform.
Treating controller support as accessibility support
Controller information and accessibility attributes are separate Steam properties. Check both, especially when a particular input method, subtitle option, or visual setting is essential.
Relying on an old community report
Older reports can describe a different game patch, Proton version, or online service state. Use them only as context and give the current store listing and current title documentation priority.
What the rating cannot promise
Steam’s compatibility category does not establish a universal frame-rate number, battery duration, graphics preset, mod configuration, or future patch result. It also cannot certify every accessory, display, network condition, or personal control layout. Valve’s testing provides a useful common reference, while your own requirements determine whether the remaining caveat matters.
For a purchase that depends on one narrow requirement, write that requirement down before checking the listing: for example, “I must navigate entirely with built-in controls,” “I need readable subtitles,” or “I need the current online mode to connect.” Then look for evidence that answers that exact question. If the listing does not answer it, classify the requirement as unknown instead of filling the gap with the rating icon.
A compact checklist to save before every purchase
- Open the live Steam store page for the exact game edition.
- Read the Steam Deck category and expand its qualification.
- Identify any controller, launcher, keyboard, mouse, text, or display caveat.
- Review controller-support attributes separately.
- Review the accessibility attributes that match your needs.
- For online games, verify current service and anti-cheat information for that title.
- Seek current, title-specific evidence for any required frame rate, battery target, mod, or recent-patch behavior.
- Refresh the listing immediately before purchase because the rating is a changing snapshot.
This process takes only a few minutes and answers the questions the Deck badge cannot: whether the controls fit, whether essential accessibility features are present, and whether the game’s current online or launcher requirements match the way you intend to play.
