Most Steam Deck accessories are only a waste when they solve a problem you do not have. Skip a dock if you play handheld, a second case if the included one works for you, and a power bank if you rarely play away from an outlet. If your game library needs more room, a microSD card is the clearest practical add-on; if you use an external display, a dock may earn its place.
How to tell whether an accessory is worth it
Before buying, name the specific inconvenience the accessory would fix. Then check whether you already own something that does the same job, whether it fits your Deck and any installed case, and whether you will use the features that account for its cost. A low price does not make a poor fit useful, and an accessory category is not automatically wasteful just because some owners can skip it.
- Buy for a use case: External-screen play, limited storage, or long sessions away from outlets can justify different accessories.
- Check what is included: The Steam Deck comes with a carrying case, so another one duplicates an included item unless it offers a meaningful improvement for your travel needs.
- Check fit and features: Confirm the exact Deck model and case compatibility, and do not pay for ports or other features you will not use.
Dock: skip it for handheld-only play
A dock is easy to leave out if you play only on the Deck’s built-in screen and do not need a desk setup. It becomes useful when you want to connect an external display or desktop peripherals, or keep the Deck arranged conveniently at a desk.

Ethernet, DisplayPort, and an SSD slot matter only if you have a reason to use them. Accessory roundups describe budget docks that omit features such as Ethernet or a bundled charger, as well as more capable options; paying extra for a feature you will leave unused is the waste to avoid.

Extra case: skip it if the included one does the job
Because a carrying case comes with the Steam Deck, a second case is optional rather than an automatic purchase. Consider one if it provides a clear benefit the supplied case does not—for example, a different level of travel protection, additional storage, or room for your installed protective shell. Check the dimensions and fit before ordering.
Screen protector: prioritize model fit over price
A protector that overhangs the screen or fails to adhere properly can be a poor purchase regardless of its price. SlashGear has reported customer complaints about generic protectors fitting badly; that is a reason to check the exact Deck model and screen dimensions, not evidence that every generic protector is defective. Look for credible fit feedback for the specific product and decide whether the protection suits how you handle and transport your Deck. A premium price by itself does not guarantee a good fit.

Power bank: buy for time away from outlets
If you mostly play near an outlet, a power bank may add cost and bulk without solving a real problem. For travel or other sessions away from power, compare USB-C Power Delivery output and capacity, and consider how you will carry and use it. Do not treat a wattage figure as a promise of a particular playtime or number of recharges.
SlashGear reports that the Steam Deck ships with a 45W AC adapter and a 40Wh battery, citing Valve specifications; those figures describe the device and its supplied adapter, not a universal minimum for every charging situation. PC Gamer reported that its reviewed Zendure X5 supports 45W Power Delivery and that its tested unit delivered around one and one-third full charges. That is a product- and review-specific result, not a guaranteed outcome for other power banks or usage conditions.

Audio: pay for comfort and features you actually want
Private listening may make headphones or earbuds useful, but expensive gaming audio is not a requirement for using the Deck. Choose based on whether you need private listening, which sound features matter to you, and whether the fit is comfortable. Comfort varies by person, so a higher price or a feature list alone is not a reason to buy.

If your installed game library exceeds the Deck’s internal storage, additional microSD storage can address a concrete need. PCGamesN’s guide, updated April 17, 2026, includes a Samsung Pro Plus microSD card among its recommendations. Compare capacity and price, and verify that the specific listing is compatible. If your internal storage is already enough, you can skip the card; the recommendation is conditional, not a must-buy for every owner.

A quick skip-or-buy checklist
- Dock: Skip for handheld-only use; consider it for an external display, peripherals, or a desk setup.
