Short answer: if you are buying now, compare the currently listed Steam Deck OLED with the exact ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go configuration you can buy in your country. Valve has acknowledged that it is working on a Steam Deck 2, but no launch date or final specifications are confirmed in the available sources. Do not buy a present-day handheld on the assumption that an unannounced Steam Deck 2 will match a rumored specification.

The best choice depends on your game library, preferred operating system and storefronts, screen priorities, battery expectations, storage, price, and how much portability matters. There is no defensible overall frame-rate winner here: no matched test covering the exact devices, games, settings, resolution, and power limits has been established. Use the decision process below to select a model for your actual use rather than a theoretical specification.

What is actually available in 2026?

Valve’s current handheld product is the Steam Deck OLED, not a product called Steam Deck 2. The page lists 512GB and 1TB OLED models. At the time of the October 13, 2026 check, the US prices shown were $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB. Prices, stock, taxes, warranty terms, and regional availability can change, so check the page for your country immediately before ordering.

Steam Deck 2 is a development prospect. T3 attributes the sentence “We’re hard at work on it” to Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais in an IGN interview, but that statement is not a release announcement and does not establish a date, price, processor, display, battery, or compatibility target. Read the reported interview statement as confirmation of ongoing work only.

“ROG Ally” and “Legion Go” are family names, not single immutable products. AMD’s current handheld overview names the ROG Xbox Ally Series, while Valve’s SteamOS support information references the ASUS ROG Ally X in its third-party-device context. Those references show an active Ally family, but they do not supply one complete, current specification sheet for every model a retailer may label “ROG Ally.”

Lenovo likewise sells multiple Legion Go generations and configurations. Lenovo markets Legion Go Gen 2 as an 8.8-inch handheld, while the model-specific PSREF record warns that specifications and availability vary by regional configuration. Do not treat Legion Go Gen 2, Legion Go S, and the earlier Legion Go as interchangeable.

Steam Deck OLED: the known baseline

Display, battery, and connectivity

Both listed OLED models use a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh up to 90Hz. Valve specifies a 50Wh battery, Wi‑Fi 6E, and a 6nm APU. Its estimated play time is 3–12 hours depending on content. That range is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for a particular game, brightness level, frame-rate cap, wireless state, or power setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OLED models accept microSD cards for expansion. Valve also describes an official Steam Deck Docking Station for connecting peripherals and displays. A dock is an optional way to use the handheld at a desk or television; it is not evidence that every buyer needs one.

Storage and price tiers

Steam Deck OLED model Internal storage US price shown on October 13, 2026 What the figure means
Steam Deck OLED 512GB 512GB NVMe SSD $789 Valve’s listed price at the time checked; volatile and region-specific.
Steam Deck OLED 1TB 1TB NVMe SSD $949 Valve’s listed price at the time checked; volatile and region-specific.

Do not present either price as the price of Steam Deck 2. Valve has not listed a purchasable Steam Deck 2 with a confirmed specification or price in the cited material.

Who should choose it

The Deck OLED is the clearest choice for someone who values Valve’s integrated hardware-and-software experience, already owns most games in a Steam library, and accepts the 7.4-inch format. It is also the only option in this comparison whose current model, storage tiers, battery estimate, and price are explicitly listed together on an official product page. That does not make it automatically faster or better for every game; it makes the buying decision more concrete.

ROG Ally: identify the SKU before comparing

Why the family name is insufficient

A retailer title that says only “ROG Ally” leaves critical questions unanswered. Before comparing it with the Deck OLED, record the complete model name, processor, memory, display specification, battery capacity, operating system, storage, included charger, warranty, and regional price. A specification from one Ally generation cannot safely be moved to another.

AMD’s current overview uses the name ROG Xbox Ally Series. Valve’s SteamOS support page refers to ASUS ROG Ally X in its third-party-device context. Neither reference, by itself, establishes a full apples-to-apples sheet for every Ally or Ally X listing. Use the manufacturer page for the exact stock-keeping unit and your market.

Questions to answer for an Ally listing

  • What is the exact model and processor designation?
  • How much memory and internal storage are included, and can storage be expanded?
  • What operating system and launcher environment are supplied?
  • What are the panel size, resolution, refresh rate, and VRR characteristics?
  • What battery capacity and charger are included, and under what conditions is battery life quoted?
  • What are the weight, dimensions, controls, warranty, and return terms in your country?

Only after these fields are confirmed should you compare an Ally with the Deck OLED or a Legion Go. If a listing omits a field, mark it as unverified rather than inferring it from a different Ally model.

Lenovo Legion Go: separate Gen 2, Go S, and earlier models

What the available Lenovo material establishes

Lenovo identifies Legion Go Gen 2 as an 8.8-inch handheld. Its PSREF documentation is model-specific and notes that specifications and availability can vary across regional configurations. AMD’s overview says Legion Go handhelds use Ryzen Z2 and Z1 processors and calls out VRR display support and Legion Space. Those statements describe a product family, not one universal configuration.

When a seller says “Legion Go 2,” verify whether it means Legion Go Gen 2 and obtain the full model code. Do the same for Legion Go S and the earlier Legion Go. A larger screen, a different processor, a changed battery, or a different controller arrangement can materially alter value and portability.

Legion Go buying checklist

  1. Copy the exact model code from the listing or Lenovo documentation.
  2. Open the corresponding Lenovo product page and PSREF entry for your country.
  3. Record the processor, memory, storage, display size and resolution, refresh rate, VRR support, battery, weight, and included accessories.
  4. Confirm the operating system, Legion Space features, warranty, and return policy.
  5. Compare the complete configuration—not an advertised family maximum—with the Deck OLED and the specific Ally SKU.

SteamOS, Windows storefronts, and game compatibility

Operating-system choice can matter more than a small difference in processor branding. Start by listing the games and launchers you actually use. If most of your library is in Steam and you want Valve’s integrated Deck interface, SteamOS may be the deciding factor. If you require a particular Windows storefront, launcher, anti-cheat implementation, mod tool, subscription app, or non-Steam workflow, verify that the exact handheld’s supplied operating system and current support meet that need.

Do not assume that a game’s presence in a store guarantees an identical experience on every handheld. Check controller detection, launcher sign-in, shader or cache behavior, anti-cheat status, suspend-and-resume behavior, and whether the title needs a keyboard, mouse, or external display. Compatibility can change with game updates, operating-system releases, drivers, and launcher revisions.

A practical library audit

  • Mark your ten most-played games and the store or launcher for each.
  • Identify any multiplayer title with anti-cheat requirements.
  • Note games that require a keyboard, mouse, trackpad, or external monitor.
  • Check whether cloud saves work across the devices you might use.
  • Decide whether you are willing to troubleshoot a launcher or prefer a console-like path.

Display and portability: compare the complete experience

The Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED panel with refresh up to 90Hz. Lenovo markets Legion Go Gen 2 at 8.8 inches. Screen size alone does not determine readability, motion quality, battery use, or comfort: panel type, resolution, refresh behavior, VRR, brightness, glare, weight, dimensions, and control placement all matter.

  • [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

For each Ally or Legion Go listing, write down the panel specification rather than relying on the family name. A larger display can make text-heavy games easier to read but may increase the size and weight you carry. A higher refresh ceiling is useful only when the game and power mode can deliver frames that make it visible, and VRR behavior must be verified for the exact panel.

Ergonomics are configuration-specific. Verify grip shape, thumb-stick and button placement, trackpads, detachable-controller behavior, kickstand design, included case, and port location on the exact model. The available material does not establish a complete ergonomic ranking, so choose based on the games you play and the way you hold the device rather than a generic family reputation.

Battery life and power: read estimates correctly

Valve’s estimate for the Deck OLED is 3–12 hours depending on content. The lower and upper ends can represent very different games, brightness, frame-rate limits, wireless use, and power settings. Do not compare that range directly with an Ally or Legion Go number unless the manufacturer states equivalent test conditions.

For any competing model, capture the quoted battery figure together with its test method. Ask whether the number is video playback, a light game, a capped frame rate, a particular brightness, or a maximum battery mode. A higher-capacity battery does not automatically deliver longer gaming time if the display, processor limit, or software profile also draws more power.

How to make a fair battery comparison

  1. Use the same game build and save area on each device.
  2. Set the same resolution, brightness, audio volume, wireless state, frame-rate cap, and performance mode.
  3. Start at the same charge level and record the time until the same low-battery threshold.
  4. Report the exact model, operating-system version, power profile, and settings.
  5. Do not turn the result into a universal claim about every game.

Performance: why a simple winner would mislead

The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison of the exact Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally configuration, and Legion Go configuration under matched conditions. A processor family name, advertised boost figure, or theoretical graphics number cannot establish which handheld delivers the highest frame rate in your games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance changes with resolution, texture quality, upscaling, frame generation, thermal limits, fan profile, memory allocation, battery mode, driver version, and whether the display’s refresh or VRR range is being used. The same handheld can produce a different result when plugged in, operating on battery, or set to a quiet profile.

What a trustworthy comparison must disclose

  • Exact retail model and processor.
  • Game title, version, scene, and repeatable test path.
  • Resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, frame generation, and frame-rate cap.
  • Power limit, fan or thermal mode, charger state, and ambient conditions.
  • Average and low-percentile frame rates, frame-time behavior, temperature, and power draw.
  • Driver, firmware, and operating-system versions.

Until those details are available for the devices you are considering, choose on software fit, display, battery expectations, price, and portability—not an unsupported FPS ranking.

Price, storage, and value

Use a same-country, same-date comparison. The Deck OLED figures above are US listings checked on October 13, 2026; they are not universal prices and do not include every market’s tax, shipping, warranty, or retailer terms. Obtain the current local price for the exact Ally and Legion Go SKU, then compare storage and included accessories at the same tier.

Storage affects value in two ways: internal capacity determines how many large games you can keep installed, while microSD expansion can lower the cost of adding capacity but may not match internal storage behavior for every workload. Valve confirms microSD support for all listed Deck models. For an Ally or Legion Go, verify the specific model’s expansion support and any warranty implications before buying a card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the cost of a charger, case, dock, replacement storage, and a compatible microSD card only when you genuinely need them. Valve’s official Docking Station is a path to peripherals and external displays, but a dock is optional and should not be treated as part of the handheld’s base price unless the listing includes it.

A step-by-step buying method

  1. Set the purchase date. If you need a device now, exclude Steam Deck 2 from the purchasable shortlist because no official product listing, date, or final specification is established.
  2. Write your library requirements. List stores, launchers, multiplayer titles, mods, cloud saves, and accessories you use.
  3. Choose the software path. Decide whether SteamOS integration or access to a particular Windows storefront is more important, then verify the exact model’s current support.
  4. Freeze the SKUs. Record the full Ally name and the full Legion Go model code. Never compare a family label with the Deck OLED as if it were one product.
  5. Compare displays and controls. Record panel size, type, resolution, refresh, VRR, weight, dimensions, controls, ports, and included case.
  6. Compare battery evidence. Copy each manufacturer estimate with its conditions; do not merge unlike test methods.
  7. Check local value. Match storage, warranty, taxes, shipping, stock, and accessories in the same currency and date.
  8. Look for a controlled test. If performance is decisive, require exact models, disclosed settings, power mode, game version, and repeatable measurements.
  9. Buy from a returnable source. Test your own games, suspend/resume, wireless, controls, display, charging, and thermals within the return window.

When waiting for Steam Deck 2 makes sense

Wait if your main reason for buying is a future Valve generation rather than a current handheld. The quoted “We’re hard at work on it” statement supports continued development, but it does not tell you when a product will ship or what it will cost. Buying an Ally, Legion Go, or Deck OLED now should be based on the device’s confirmed present capabilities, not an assumption that a future Deck will arrive soon or outperform it.

Buy the Deck OLED now if its current SteamOS experience, 7.4-inch OLED display, storage options, and local price satisfy your library and portability needs. Choose an exact Ally or Legion Go configuration now when its verified operating system, storefront access, display, controls, or regional value solve a requirement the Deck OLED does not. Revisit the comparison after Valve publishes an official product page with final specifications and availability.
