Change an indie game’s controller behavior from its per-game Controller Configuration. In Big Picture mode, open Library, select the game, choose Manage Game, then Controller Configuration. In the desktop client, use the game’s library page, its Manage menu, or the in-game Steam overlay. Choose a native gamepad layout when the game supports controller input; for a keyboard-first game, map buttons and sticks to keyboard and mouse commands with Steam Input.
Before editing, check the store-page support label. Full Controller Support means the game can be downloaded, launched, and played with only a controller. Partial Controller Support means a mouse or keyboard may still be needed during setup or for parts of the interface.
What Steam Input is solving
Indie games vary widely in how they read input. A title built around a gamepad exposes actions such as left stick, right stick, triggers and face buttons. A keyboard-first title may only listen for keys such as W, A, S, D, E, Space and Escape, plus mouse movement and clicks. Steam Input sits between your controller and the game so you can use the appropriate model instead of forcing one scheme onto every title.

Check support before choosing a layout
Full Controller Support
Steam defines this label as a title that can be downloaded, launched and played using only a controller. Start with a native gamepad template so the game’s own actions, prompts and analog behavior are preserved.
Partial Controller Support
This label means a mouse or keyboard may be required from time to time. The game may play well with a controller but require a mouse for a launcher, a text field, a settings screen or a specific menu. Keep a keyboard or mouse nearby and test those screens before committing to a couch-only setup.
No or unclear controller support
When the store page does not promise controller play, treat the game as keyboard-first. Steam Input can emulate WASD, mouse movement, clicks and menu keys, but gamepad-specific commands will not work properly if the game never exposes gamepad actions.

- Launch Big Picture with Enter Big Picture Mode in the Steam client, or press your controller’s Home, Guide or System button while Steam is running.
- Open Library and highlight the indie game.
- Choose Manage Game.
- Select Controller Configuration.
- Save the layout, return to the game page and launch the title to test it.
To leave Big Picture, use Menu > Power > Exit Big Picture Mode. Alt+Enter toggles the full-screen presentation.
Desktop Steam client
Connect the controller, open the game’s library page and look for the controller configuration link. Depending on the current client layout, it is on the game page or inside the three-dot menu. The same editor can also be opened from the game’s Manage menu.
While a game is running
Open the Steam overlay with the configured overlay shortcut, then choose Controller Configuration. This is useful for changing one binding, switching community layouts or checking whether Steam Input is active without quitting the game.

| Scope | What it controls | When to edit it |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop Configuration | Mouse, keyboard and other desktop actions when no game or Big Picture mode is active | When you want the controller to operate the computer desktop |
| Big Picture Mode Configuration | Navigation in Big Picture and the Steam on-screen keyboard | When menus or text entry in Big Picture are difficult to use |
| Guide Chord Configuration | Universal bindings available while holding the controller’s Guide, Home or System button | When you want shortcuts such as screenshots or overlay access from any game |
| Per-game configuration | The bindings used by one selected game | For movement, camera, actions and menus in that title |
For an indie game, the per-game scope is normally the correct starting point. A desktop or Big Picture edit will not necessarily change gameplay controls.

Build a reliable layout step by step
- Confirm detection. Open Steam’s Controller Settings and verify that the device appears. If it is absent, fix the connection before editing a layout.
- Read the support label. Decide whether to preserve native gamepad actions or emulate keyboard and mouse input.
- Choose a starting point. Use the game’s official template when one is available. Otherwise select a well-rated community layout and inspect its bindings rather than trusting its name.
- Map movement and camera first. Assign left-stick movement and right-stick camera control for a native gamepad game. For a keyboard-first title, map the left stick to WASD and the right stick to mouse movement, adjusting sensitivity until the camera is controllable.
- Add primary actions. Bind face buttons, triggers, shoulder buttons and stick clicks to the game’s most frequent actions. Keep jump, interact, attack or confirm actions easy to reach.
- Cover menus and secondary screens. Add pause, inventory, map, journal, item selection and menu navigation. A layout that works only during movement is incomplete.
- Handle keyboard-only commands. In a keyboard-first game, assign keys such as Escape, Tab, E, Space or number-row shortcuts to unused controller buttons or a mode-shift layer.
- Test every context. Verify the title screen, settings, ordinary gameplay, pause screen, map or inventory, text entry and any transition that requires a click.
- Save or export. Save the per-game layout after testing. Exporting or noting the bindings makes recovery easier if a later template change overwrites your work.
Native gamepad versus keyboard-and-mouse emulation
| Layout choice | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native gamepad actions | Games with Full Controller Support or clear gamepad input | Correct analog ranges, rumble behavior and in-game controller prompts when the title supports them | Gamepad commands can fail or do nothing in a keyboard-only title |
| Keyboard and mouse emulation | Keyboard-first games and titles with incomplete controller support | Works with existing keybinds; can reach keyboard-only actions | Mouse aiming may need tuning, simultaneous inputs can be awkward, and prompts may still show keyboard keys |
| Community layout | Games without a useful official template | Provides a tested starting arrangement and may include mode shifts for menus | Quality varies; bindings may target a different controller or game version |
Do not mix the models accidentally. A template that sends gamepad-specific commands to a keyboard-only title can look correct in the editor while producing no response in play. Conversely, emulating keyboard keys in a game with strong native support can replace useful analog behavior with less precise digital input.
Controller compatibility and button labels
Steam officially lists the Steam Controller, Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers as supported in Big Picture. Third-party controllers often work, but Valve says they are not officially supported.
In Big Picture’s Controller Settings, enable the matching Xbox or PlayStation configuration-support option, then connect the device. Compatible hardware should appear as detected. If you use a Switch Pro controller, check its button orientation carefully: the physical positions and on-screen labels may differ from an Xbox-style template.
PlayStation default mode can route a controller to a game’s native support when that support is available and to Steam Input when it is not. Therefore, the same controller may use different paths and glyphs from one game to another. Read the prompts shown by the game instead of assuming that A, B, X and Y labels match the letters printed on your hardware.

Big Picture platform and connection requirements
Steam’s current support information lists Big Picture for Windows 10 or newer, macOS 12 or later, and up-to-date Ubuntu Linux. These requirements can change, so check the live Steam Support documentation if your operating system is near the boundary.
- Connect the controller before opening the configuration editor so Steam can identify its profile.
- Use a wired connection or a charged wireless controller while creating a layout; a disconnect during saving can leave you unsure which version was stored.
- Keep the Steam overlay enabled if you plan to edit from inside the game.
Troubleshoot common failures
The game shows keyboard prompts instead of controller buttons
First determine whether the game has native controller support. In a keyboard-first game, keyboard prompts are expected even when Steam Input is translating your controller. If the game does support a gamepad, switch from a keyboard-emulation template to the official or native gamepad layout. Also check whether PlayStation default mode is passing the controller directly to the game rather than translating it.
Buttons work in menus but not during play
You may have edited Big Picture Mode Configuration instead of the per-game layout, or the template may contain bindings only for menus. Reopen the game’s own Controller Configuration, inspect the active action set and test movement, camera and primary actions in a save or tutorial area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNothing responds in a keyboard-first game
Replace gamepad commands with explicit keyboard and mouse bindings. Map the left stick to WASD, a stick or trackpad to mouse movement, and a shoulder or trigger to left-click. Add Escape, Enter and the game’s interaction key. Then test outside a text field, because mouse and keyboard emulation can behave differently when the game changes focus.

A community layout is confusing or mismatched
Open its detailed binding view and check the controller family, action layers and any mode-shift button. Choose a different highly rated layout if it targets another controller or an older control scheme. You can keep the useful movement bindings and replace the rest rather than starting over.
The controller is not detected
Return to Steam’s Controller Settings, reconnect the device and enable the relevant Xbox or PlayStation configuration-support box. Third-party hardware may function but is outside Valve’s official support list. If detection returns only after restarting Steam, reconnect before launching the game so the per-game profile initializes correctly.
Changes do not persist
Confirm that you pressed the layout editor’s save or apply control and that you edited the intended game. Reopen Controller Configuration after closing it to verify the bindings. Export or record a working layout before experimenting with another template.
Quick Recap
How to judge a layout before adopting it
- Input model: Does it use native gamepad actions or keyboard and mouse emulation, and does that match the game’s support level?
- Coverage: Can you reach gameplay, pause, inventory, map, journal, settings and text entry without touching another device?
- Discoverability: Is it an official template, or does the community layout have clear descriptions and strong ratings?
- Controller family: Are the prompts and physical button labels appropriate for Xbox-style, PlayStation or Switch hardware?
- Scope: Is this saved to the selected game rather than Desktop Configuration or Big Picture Mode Configuration?
A practical test checklist
- Steam detects the controller before the game launches.
- The selected layout is attached to the correct title.
- Left-stick movement and right-stick camera control are usable at low and high sensitivity.
- Face buttons, triggers, shoulders and stick clicks perform the intended actions.
- Pause, map, inventory, journal and confirmation/cancel controls work.
- Keyboard-only commands and mouse clicks are reachable when the game needs them.
- The layout survives closing and reopening the editor.
- Prompts make sense for the connected controller, or you understand why the game still displays keyboard glyphs.
