Valve’s October 16, 2026 Steam Client Beta update adds a second round of startup-performance work. The earlier startup changes have already shipped in Steam’s public client; this Preview/Beta build is the next incremental step. Valve does not publish a measured time reduction, benchmark, hardware requirement, or technical breakdown of which startup stages changed, so the update confirms ongoing optimization rather than a specific speed guarantee.
What changed in the October 16 Steam Client Beta
The headline entry in Valve’s changelog reads: “Second round of Steam startup performance improvements following shipping of prior improvements in public client.” That wording establishes two points: a previous startup improvement is now available in the stable public client, and the October 16 Preview/Beta channel contains another set of changes for testing.
The update is therefore a maintenance and performance release, not a newly announced feature or a hardware upgrade. Steam users may notice a more responsive launch, but Valve has not stated how many seconds—or what percentage—startup is expected to improve.

How the beta compares with the stable Steam client
| Comparison point | October 16 Preview/Beta | Public (stable) client |
|---|---|---|
| Startup work | Second round of improvements | Earlier startup improvements have shipped |
| Availability | Requires Steam’s Preview/Beta channel | Available through the normal public release |
| Performance evidence | No published time reduction or benchmark | No numeric result stated in the October 16 notes |
| Regression risk | Higher, because beta changes are still being validated | Lower relative to the test channel |
There is no supported numeric performance comparison between the two channels. Any launch-time difference will depend on factors such as installed games, extensions, storage speed, operating system, and background software, but Valve’s note does not quantify those effects.

How to opt into Steam’s Preview/Beta channel
To test the October 16 build, change Steam’s client participation setting on the computer where you want to run the beta:
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open Steam in the top-left menu and choose Settings.
- Select Interface in the settings sidebar.
- Find the client beta participation control and choose the available Preview or Beta option.
- Allow Steam to restart and install the test-client update.
Exact label wording can vary as Valve changes its channel naming. If the beta option is not shown, restart Steam and check the Interface settings again. Returning to the public client uses the same control: select the option that disables beta participation, then restart when Steam prompts you.

Should you install the beta?
Choose Preview/Beta if
- You want to test the second startup-improvement round before it reaches everyone.
- You can tolerate occasional regressions in exchange for earlier fixes.
- You use Linux and are affected by the Vulkan Alt-Tab or native non-Steam launch issues addressed here.
- Your voice-chat volume settings, Steam Service Error prompts, or Steam Input configuration are misbehaving.
Stay on the public client if
- Your priority is maximum stability rather than early access.
- You need a dependable gaming session and cannot risk a test-channel regression.
- You are only interested in the first startup improvement, which has already reached the public release.
No purchase or physical product is required. The update is distributed through Steam’s client channel selection, and the October 16 notes list no special hardware requirement.

- They do not state a startup-time reduction in seconds or percent.
- They do not identify a minimum CPU, GPU, memory, or storage configuration.
- They do not explain whether the changes target sign-in, library loading, downloads, overlays, or another startup stage.
- They do not promise when the second round will move to the stable public client.
That makes the safest conclusion practical rather than numerical: the beta is an early test of continued startup optimization, while the public client already contains the prior round.
