There is no single best Steam alternative. Choose the storefront that fits the specific game, edition, price in your country, refund terms, and download or DRM requirements. Epic Games Store is a broad digital store available on PC, Mac, and Android worldwide; GOG offers a curated catalog with an optional client; and itch.io is an open marketplace where independent creators control much of the pricing and presentation.
The practical approach is to compare the same game and edition in at least two stores before paying. Check the checkout total, included downloadable content, supported operating system, client requirement, refund eligibility, and whether the download is the build you actually want.

What to check before choosing a storefront
Match the exact game and edition
Search for the precise title, developer, edition, and downloadable content you intend to buy. A base game, deluxe edition, soundtrack bundle, early-access build, and console port can have different files and prices. Store catalogs are not synchronized, so the same game may be absent, have a different edition name, or include different extras.
Compare your real checkout total
Compare the displayed total in your own country rather than relying on a price seen in a video or older article. Regional pricing, currency conversion, taxes, sale timing, and payment-method fees can change the amount. Record the final total for the same edition on each store and note when the sale ends.
Read the delivery and client terms
Determine whether the game downloads through a launcher, a browser, a standalone installer, or several of those methods. Confirm supported operating systems, architecture requirements, required online sign-in, update behavior, and whether you receive separate installers or only a client-managed download. Store-level descriptions do not establish every title’s DRM or offline behavior.
Apply the correct refund policy
Refund rules belong to the store and sometimes to the product. Do not transfer one storefront’s policy to another. Epic’s documented criteria, for example, apply only to eligible products marked refundable or self-refundable and include time and usage limits. Check the current policy and exclusions immediately before purchase.

Epic Games Store: a conventional storefront outside Steam
Availability and store model
Epic states that its store is available worldwide on PC, Mac, and Android. It functions like a traditional digital storefront: you browse product pages, select an edition, pay through an account, and download through the supported software for that title. “Worldwide” does not mean every game or payment method is available in every country; the product page and checkout for your region control.
How to discover games
Use the store’s category pages, search, publisher pages, and sale sections to move from a known game to related releases. When you find a candidate, open its complete product page instead of relying on a promotional tile. Check the developer, supported operating system, edition contents, release status, required client, language list, and any warnings about online services or consumable content.
Refund conditions and exclusions
Epic’s FAQ describes a conditional rule: an eligible product must be marked refundable or self-refundable, the request must be made within 14 days, and recorded runtime must be below two hours. The FAQ also lists exclusions, including some products marked non-refundable and consumables. These are not blanket rights for every transaction. Confirm the current policy, the product’s label, and your region’s terms before relying on it.

Trials are not permanent ownership
Epic says some publishers offer trials for certain non-free games. A trial can end when its stated period ends, so access during a trial is not the same as buying the game. Read the trial’s duration, included content, and conversion or purchase terms on the product page.

Buying safely
- Sign in to the correct account and verify the store region shown at checkout.
- Open the full game page and confirm the edition, platform, languages, and included downloadable content.
- Look for the refundable or self-refundable label and read any product-specific exclusions.
- Check the final tax-inclusive total and payment method before confirming.
- Save the receipt and note the purchase date and first launch time in case you need to evaluate refund eligibility.
GOG: a curated catalog with an optional gaming client
What the platform promises
GOG describes itself as a digital distribution platform with a curated selection of games and an optional gaming client. That makes it useful when you want to browse a more selective catalog or prefer a purchase that is not automatically tied to a mandatory client. “Optional” describes the client at the platform level; it does not prove that every game has identical installers, update methods, or online requirements.
Verify each listing’s technical details
Do not infer DRM status, offline play, multiplayer support, cloud saves, achievements, or installer availability from the storefront name alone. Read the individual listing for the exact edition. Look for downloadable installer files, operating-system support, required third-party accounts, and notes about online activation. If offline access matters, download the installers or read the title’s instructions before you leave a reliable internet connection.
Discovering and buying a GOG title
- Search for the game and open its product page rather than a search-result summary.
- Compare the standard, deluxe, complete, and bundle editions; list the extras you actually need.
- Read the system requirements and the installation or client notes.
- Check the price in your account’s region, including taxes and any sale end time.
- Review the current refund terms that apply to the transaction, then complete checkout.
- After purchase, test the supplied installer or client download while you can still meet the applicable support or refund conditions.
A curated catalog can reduce noise, but it can also mean a game you found elsewhere is not offered in the edition you want. Search another storefront rather than assuming a missing result is temporarily hidden.

itch.io: an open marketplace for independent games
Creator-led catalog and pricing
itch.io describes itself as an open marketplace for independent digital creators, with a focus on independent video games. Creators can set prices and run sales, and the platform documents a configurable revenue-share model. That structure produces a wide range of projects: commercial releases, prototypes, game-jam entries, tools, demos, and experimental works may appear beside one another.

Search and Browse are different discovery routes
itch.io’s documentation separates publishing from inclusion in its Search and Browse discovery index. Direct title search is intended for finding a known project. Tags and browse pages are better for exploring themes, genres, formats, and other attributes. A published page is not automatically guaranteed to appear in every discovery surface: projects must meet the platform’s indexing criteria, and a page can be removed from the discovery index for failing platform guidelines.
When you cannot find a project by a broad keyword, try the creator’s exact title, then use the tags on a known project to branch into related games. Treat a missing browse result as a discovery-index issue or a spelling problem before concluding that the project is unavailable.
DRM-free downloads require a title-level check
The itch.io buyer FAQ states: “Most itch.io releases come with DRM-free builds along with extra keys, when the game is also available on Steam.” The word most matters. Inspect the individual project page to see which operating-system files, keys, launchers, or third-party services are actually provided. A page may offer a browser build, a downloadable archive, an installer, or more than one of these.
Pay-what-you-want and the meaning of free
itch.io’s pricing guide explains pay-what-you-want pricing above a minimum, and that minimum may be zero. A creator can therefore allow a download without payment while also inviting voluntary payment. The guide distinguishes ownership from a free download: paying for a product grants ownership and a download key, while taking a free download without paying does not by itself make the user an owner. Read the project page’s wording if future updates, keys, or account access matter to you.

Buying or downloading an itch.io project
- Open the creator’s project page and verify that it is the official page for the title.
- Read the description, content warnings, supported systems, file list, version notes, and update date.
- Check whether the page offers a free download, a minimum price, or pay-what-you-want pricing.
- Review what payment grants: ownership, a download key, updates, or only access to the current free files.
- Download the file for your operating system and scan the archive or installer with your normal security tools.
- Keep the project page or receipt so you can retrieve updates and confirm what your purchase included.

A repeatable workflow for finding and buying outside Steam
- Start with the game, not the storefront. Write down the exact title, developer, desired edition, operating system, and whether you need multiplayer, mod support, or offline installers.
- Check the three storefronts. Search the exact title on Epic Games Store, GOG, and itch.io. If a store has no result, check spelling and alternate edition names; do not assume every catalog carries every release.
- Open the primary product pages. Confirm that the developer or publisher, screenshots, description, and edition contents match the game you intend to buy.
- Record technical requirements. Note the operating system, architecture, disk space, controller or peripheral requirements, client requirement, online activation, and whether files are downloadable for backup.
- Compare regional checkout totals. Put the same edition and content in each cart, then record tax-inclusive totals and sale deadlines in your currency.
- Evaluate the applicable refund rule. For Epic, check the refundable or self-refundable label, the 14-day request window, the under-two-hour runtime limit, and exclusions. For other stores, read their current transaction terms instead of borrowing Epic’s conditions.
- Choose the delivery model you can maintain. Select an optional-client or standalone download only if the title actually supplies one. If a launcher is required, confirm that you can keep the account and software available.
- Purchase and test promptly. Install or download the game, launch it, check the expected edition and files, and resolve problems while your store’s support or refund window remains open.
- Preserve your records. Keep the receipt, account email, installer or archive where permitted, and notes about the version and included extras.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game appears in search but the edition is wrong
Open the product page and compare the edition name, included content, and supported systems. Search the developer’s page for a separate complete or deluxe listing. Do not buy the first result simply because its title matches.
A title is missing from Browse on itch.io
Use the exact project title or creator name first. Then inspect tags on a related project and browse from those tags. Publishing and indexing are separate on itch.io, and a project may not meet discovery-index criteria or may have been removed from the index under platform guidelines.
You expected an offline installer but received a client-dependent download
Re-read the title-level delivery notes. A storefront’s general description cannot establish every game’s DRM or offline behavior. If the listing does not promise standalone files, plan for the stated client or contact the store’s support before assuming the files are missing.

Check whether you paid anything and what the project page says that payment provides. Under itch.io’s pricing explanation, taking a free download without paying is not the same as purchasing ownership and receiving a download key.
You are close to a refund deadline
Stop extended testing, record the purchase date and runtime, and submit the request through the store’s current support path if the product qualifies. For Epic, the documented 14-day and under-two-hour conditions apply only to eligible products and do not override exclusions.
Which alternative should you use?
- Choose Epic Games Store when the exact game is available there, you want a conventional storefront on a supported PC, Mac, or Android device, and its regional price and conditional refund terms are acceptable.
- Choose GOG when its curated catalog contains the edition you want and an optional client or the listing’s specific installer arrangement suits your setup. Verify the title’s DRM and offline details rather than assuming them.
- Choose itch.io when you want independent, experimental, or creator-led games, flexible pricing, or a project that may not appear in larger catalogs. Use direct title search and tags deliberately, and inspect the exact files and ownership terms.
The strongest buying habit is store-agnostic: identify the exact release, compare your country’s final checkout price, read the title-level file and client notes, and apply only the refund policy that actually governs that purchase.
