Use Steam for the authoritative record of your unlocks; use TrueSteamAchievements when you need walkthroughs, ratio-based scoring, collection planning, goals, sessions or large leaderboards. Steam’s built-in page is enough for checking progress, rarity and a few friends. TrueSteamAchievements is an external community layer that turns the same achievement data into a planning and competition workflow. Serious achievement hunters will usually get the best result by using both, with Steam as the final reference when the two views differ.
Steam and TrueSteamAchievements at a glance
The two services answer different questions. Steam answers “What has this Steam account unlocked, and how far is it through each available set?” TrueSteamAchievements answers “What should I do next, how difficult is it relative to other games, and how do I plan or compare a larger hunting project?”

What Steam’s built-in tracker does
It is the first-party baseline
Steam’s achievement page is tied directly to the game, the Steam account and Valve’s own Achievement Set model. That makes it the clearest place to verify whether an unlock is recorded on the account. You can reach the achievement view from the Steam client or from Steam Community game pages, without creating a second tracking identity or copying progress into another service.

The page also exposes the global unlock rate for individual achievements, so you can distinguish a routine early-game unlock from an achievement that only a small portion of players has earned. Search and filters make a quick check practical
Steam supports searching achievements and filtering by unlock state or by set. A short session can therefore answer practical questions quickly: which achievements remain locked, whether an item belongs to the base game or an add-on set, and how complete a particular set is. This is a progress tool rather than a project-management system, but it is fast because the information is already attached to the game you own and play.
Achievement Sets explain why totals do not always match
Steam’s newer Achievement Sets separate different kinds of content instead of treating every achievement as one undifferentiated list. A game can expose a base set, one or more DLC sets, seasonal or other sets, and archived sets. The total shown to a player can therefore differ according to which content is available to that player. Two people discussing “100 percent” may be referring to different sets or different available content.
Archived achievements matter when a developer retires or changes content. They remain part of Steam’s historical presentation even though they may no longer be obtainable in the normal way. A current total can also be revised as Valve’s set model and a game’s available content change. Treat a percentage as a statement about the displayed set and account context, not as a timeless universal number.

Friend comparison is deliberately small and immediate
Steam lets you compare game progress with up to three friends. The comparison includes rare achievements, completed sets and progress in DLC sets. Valve described the feature this way: “You can now compare your game progress with up to 3 friends, including rare achievements, completed sets, and progress in DLC sets.” This is useful for a small group deciding what to play next, but it is not a global ranking system.

Where Steam stops
- Steam gives you the achievement list and progress context; it does not present a single, guaranteed walkthrough catalogue for every game.
- It provides counts, completion and rarity context rather than a separate ratio-based score designed to compare the difficulty of different games.
- Friend comparison is capped at three people, so it does not replace a public leaderboard for a large community.
- Its filters help you inspect a game, but they are not the same as a cross-series collection, long-term completion-goal or scheduled-session system.
What TrueSteamAchievements adds
An external tracking and community layer
TrueSteamAchievements describes itself as a Steam achievement tracking site. You create and use an external community account, then use the site’s game and achievement pages to organize hunting activity around your Steam library. Because it is not Valve’s client, it should be treated as a companion layer rather than a replacement for the first-party record.
Walkthroughs are the main practical advantage
TrueSteamAchievements advertises walkthroughs for Steam games alongside achievement and game tracking. That changes the workflow from “look at a locked item and search elsewhere” to “open the game’s tracking page and follow a guide intended to cover the set.” The value is greatest for missable achievements, multi-step quest chains, puzzle solutions and achievements whose conditions are not obvious from their names.
A walkthrough is still an aid, not proof that an unlock has registered. Use it to plan an attempt, then confirm the result in Steam’s own achievement view. This two-step check avoids treating a guide’s completion checklist as the account’s official state.
TSA ratio scores add a difficulty-oriented lens
The site displays TSA ratio scores and broader community statistics. A ratio score is useful when you want to compare the relative hunting value or difficulty of games instead of looking only at the number of achievements. A game with many easy unlocks and a game with a smaller number of demanding achievements can be separated more meaningfully by a community ratio than by raw count alone.

The available material does not establish a universal conversion between a TSA ratio and Steam’s global unlock percentage. Do not treat the two numbers as interchangeable, and do not infer that a high ratio proves a particular game is objectively harder for every player. Use the ratio as TrueSteamAchievements’ comparison metric within its own community context.
Leaderboards support competition beyond a friend group
TrueSteamAchievements provides player leaderboards. These are the appropriate tool if your motivation comes from rank, totals or visible progress against a broad community rather than a comparison with three friends. Leaderboards can also make a long-term target concrete: you can decide whether to improve a position, pass a milestone or focus on a particular series.
Collection, series and goal tools support planning
The site’s search description says members can manage a Game Collection, measure progress across an entire series, set scoring and completion goals, and join regular gaming sessions for difficult achievements. These features address the organizational work Steam leaves to the player:

- Completion goals: define a target beyond the next individual unlock.

Live counters show scale, not a permanent specification
On 18 October 2026, the homepage counters captured for this comparison showed 3,620,813 achievements across 66,544 games and 104,730 gamers with 896,548,003 achievements. Those are live counters, so they can change as games, accounts and tracked data change. Quote them only with that date and do not use them as a fixed product limit or a guarantee that every listed game has the same level of guide coverage.

Which tracker should you choose?
Choose Steam alone for a quick, self-contained progress check
Steam is the sensible choice if you want to open a game, see what remains, check rarity and compare progress with a small group of friends. It requires no additional workflow and keeps the answer alongside the game and account that generated the unlock. It is also the right reference when you are trying to understand why a percentage changed after a DLC, seasonal set or archived set appeared.
Choose TrueSteamAchievements when the next step is unclear
Use TrueSteamAchievements when the problem is not “what is locked?” but “how do I unlock it?” Walkthroughs, community statistics and gaming sessions are more useful than Steam’s list when an achievement is missable, cooperative, obscure or spread across a long sequence. The site is also a better fit if you want to turn several games into a planned completion queue.
Choose TrueSteamAchievements for scoring and public competition
If raw achievement counts do not express the challenge you care about, the TSA ratio and player leaderboards provide a different way to measure progress. This is especially relevant to hunters who want a community ranking or who prefer to pursue a difficult set rather than simply maximize the number of inexpensive unlocks.
Use both when you want planning without giving up the source of truth

A practical Steam-plus-TrueSteamAchievements workflow
- Start in Steam. Open the game’s achievement view in the Steam client or Steam Community page. Identify the relevant Achievement Set, note your completion state and check whether DLC, seasonal or archived sets are listed separately.
- Filter the unfinished items. Use Steam’s search and unlock-state or set filters to make a short list. Record which items are base-game goals and which depend on additional content available to your account.
- Open the matching game page on TrueSteamAchievements. Use its achievement list and walkthrough coverage to turn the short list into an order of operations. Pay attention to missable conditions and prerequisites before starting a new chapter or playthrough.
- Set the scope of the project. Add the title to your Game Collection or series view if you are managing several games. Set a completion or scoring goal that matches what you actually intend to finish; do not mix a base-set target with a full-DLC target without labeling the difference.
- Use sessions for cooperative requirements. If a difficult achievement needs other players, look for a suitable gaming session rather than assuming a solo attempt will work. Confirm the required game mode and conditions in the walkthrough before joining.
- Play and verify each result in Steam. After an achievement pops, return to Steam’s achievement page and confirm that the unlock appears in the appropriate set. This keeps the first-party record as the final check while the external site remains your planning log.
- Reconcile differences by checking the set context. If a percentage or total does not match, first check whether one view includes DLC, seasonal or archived content and whether the other is showing only the base set. Remember that the two services present data for different purposes; a display difference is not, by itself, evidence that either service is universally inaccurate.
How to interpret completion percentages and scores
“100 percent” needs a defined set
On Steam, completion is set-aware. A player can complete the base Achievement Set while leaving a DLC set untouched, or can see an archived set that is no longer normally obtainable. When you report a completion result to friends, name the scope: base game, all currently available sets, or a particular DLC set. This prevents a technically correct percentage from sounding like a claim about every achievement ever associated with the game.
Global unlock rate is population context, not a difficulty grade
Steam’s global unlock rate tells you how many players have earned an achievement in the population represented by Steam’s statistics. A low rate may reflect difficulty, a late-game location, a missable choice, limited multiplayer availability or players who stopped early. Use the rate to identify unusual or rare items, not as a standalone ranking of challenge.
TSA ratio is a separate community measure
TrueSteamAchievements’ ratio score is intended for comparisons within its tracking community. It can help prioritize games or evaluate a hunting profile, but it should not be substituted for Steam’s unlock rate, and the available description does not specify a single formula that makes the values directly comparable. Keep both labels when discussing your progress.

No universal accuracy winner has been established
There is no independent, dated accuracy audit establishing that Steam or TrueSteamAchievements is universally more accurate. Steam is the first-party authority for the account’s recorded unlocks, while TrueSteamAchievements is a community-maintained tracking and guide layer. The sensible response to a disagreement is to inspect the specific game, set and achievement condition rather than declare one database correct in every case.
Steam’s set model is still changing
Achievement Sets are a relatively recent and changing part of Steam’s presentation. A developer or Valve can expose content in separate base, DLC, seasonal or archived sets, and the revised total can vary with what a player can access. Recheck the set labels when a game receives new content or when your completion percentage changes unexpectedly.
Community pages vary in depth
TrueSteamAchievements’ live counters demonstrate scale, not uniform coverage. A listed game may have extensive walkthrough detail, a concise list, or community information that evolves over time. Use the walkthrough as a planning aid and verify the actual unlock in Steam, particularly for a one-time or missable condition.

- Does the game have DLC, seasonal or archived sets? Read Steam’s set labels before interpreting any percentage.

Verdict
Steam is the essential tracker because it is first-party, set-aware and tied directly to the account that earns the achievements. TrueSteamAchievements is the stronger hunting companion because it adds walkthroughs, TSA ratio scores, leaderboards, collection and series planning, completion goals and gaming sessions. For a casual progress check, Steam alone is sufficient. For deliberate completion, difficult achievements or community competition, use TrueSteamAchievements alongside Steam and keep Steam’s recorded unlock state as the final authority.
