Steam is testing a redesigned achievement system called Achievement Sets. Instead of forcing every achievement into one ever-growing list, participating developers can divide a game’s achievements into groups for the main campaign, multiplayer, character classes, downloadable content (DLC) or seasonal events. Each set has its own progress bar and completion trophy, so later additions do not automatically undo a set you already completed.
The feature is available in the Steam Client beta as of October 2026. Valve has not announced a guaranteed public-release date; a report published on October 15 suggested a wider rollout could arrive in roughly a month, but that timing may change.
What Achievement Sets change
Achievement Sets are developer-created collections, not a universal rule applied automatically to every Steam game. A title must be migrated by its developer before the new layout and rules appear.

Each set has an independent completion state and trophy. If a developer adds achievements later, Steam can place them in a new or existing set without turning a previously completed set back into an incomplete one.
How DLC achievements affect 100% completion
Base game and DLC can be separated
Developers can put add-on achievements into dedicated DLC sets. Steam does not include those achievements in a player’s overall game progress until that player has access to the relevant DLC. After the DLC is acquired, its achievements appear as separate progress and trophies.

This means a player who completed the base game should not automatically lose that completion status merely because the developer released an expansion. The exact display depends on whether the game has adopted Achievement Sets and how its developer assigns the content.

What happens when DLC is acquired
Once you own or otherwise have access to the DLC, Steam can count the associated achievements in the content that is available to you and show the DLC set separately. Players with different DLC ownership may therefore see different totals for the same game.

Seasonal and limited-time achievements
Valve has added archiving for individual achievements and entire sets. Developers can use this for holiday events, seasonal challenges or other content that is no longer obtainable.
- Players who unlocked an achievement before it was archived continue to see it on their profiles.
- Players who missed the retired content no longer see it as an obtainable requirement.
- Archived achievements and sets no longer block completion for players who could not access them.
Archiving is different from deleting an achievement: previous unlocks remain visible, while the unavailable requirement is removed from the completion calculation for affected players.

Comparing progress with friends
The redesigned page lets you compare a game’s progress with up to three friends at once. Comparisons can include rare achievements, completed sets and progress in DLC sets.
Steam calculates a player’s total from the achievements that person can actually earn. Ownership differences, archived content and time-limited availability can therefore produce different totals instead of treating every profile as if it had identical requirements. A lower percentage does not necessarily mean a player has unlocked fewer achievements in absolute terms; the denominator may be different.

How to try Achievement Sets in Steam’s beta
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open Steam in the upper-left menu and choose Settings.
- In the Interface section, find the Client Beta Participation setting.
- Choose the available Steam Client beta option and restart Steam when prompted.
- Open a game that appears in Valve’s supported list, then open its achievements page to see whether the developer has enabled sets.
Beta availability does not mean every listed title will expose every type of set immediately. Developers control the grouping and migration of their own achievements.
Games initially listed as supporting the system
Valve’s initial list includes:

The list is an initial supported-games list, not a claim that all Steam games have migrated. Coverage can expand or change while the feature remains in beta.
What developers must change
Steamworks’ rebuilt editor supports bulk import and export of achievement definitions, icons, localization and set assignments. It also supports bulk moves, automatic grayscale icons for locked achievements, localization warnings, archived content and developer-only test sets.

Existing achievement API names and unlock calls continue to work. Steamworks Development said on October 15, 2026: “You don’t need to update your game or the Steamworks SDK to start using Achievement Sets.” Developers can therefore reorganize many existing achievements without shipping a client-side game update or changing the calls that trigger unlocks.
What remains uncertain during the beta
- There is no fixed public-release date.
- Not every game has Achievement Sets; adoption depends on the developer.
- User-interface details, supported-game coverage and completion calculations may change before general release.
- There is no authoritative published adoption or player-count statistic yet; current information describes the features and the initial supported list.
For players, the practical test is whether a game’s achievement page shows set-level progress, DLC sets or archived content after joining the beta. If it does not, the title may not yet be migrated even if it is expected to support the system.
