When Steam achievements are missing or appear in duplicate-looking groups, check the owning account and Library filters first, then privacy settings, client refresh, DLC set separation, and app-ID synchronization. A second group is often an intentional base-game or DLC Achievement Set, not a second copy of your unlocks.
Start with the distinction that solves most reports
Steam has three different visibility systems that are easy to confuse:
- Account ownership: Achievements and statistics belong to the Steam account that earned them. Steamworks documents that this data is associated with the user’s Steam account and displayed through the Steam Community profile (Valve’s Stats and Achievements documentation).
- Game privacy: Marking a game private hides its ownership, activity and achievement showcases from other people. Steam explains the effect in its Steam Private Games support article.
- Library organization: Hiding a game in your Library is a local organization feature. It does not mean the game’s account data has been deleted, and it is separate from making the game private.
Therefore, a game can be absent from someone else’s profile while its achievements still exist on your account, or it can be absent from your own Library view because a filter is active. Treat those as different problems before attempting repairs.

What Steam Achievement Sets are supposed to show
Valve’s Achievement Sets feature lets a developer divide achievements into separate sets, typically a base-game set and one or more downloadable-content (DLC) sets. Each set has its own progress and trophy display. The Steam Achievement Sets announcement also describes archived sets.

Base game and DLC sets
If a title supports Achievement Sets, the game’s achievement page may show a base-game group and a similarly named DLC group. The groups can contain different achievements and maintain separate completion percentages. Seeing two groups is not, by itself, evidence that Steam duplicated your unlocks.
Archived sets
A developer can archive an older set. Archived achievements or sets may be hidden from users who never earned anything in them, while remaining visible to players who did. Two players can consequently see different group lists for the same title without either account being corrupt.

Why names look identical
Steam’s presentation may use the game’s name for several sets, with the distinction appearing only in the set label, progress count or DLC context. Compare the achievement names and progress totals rather than relying solely on the heading text.

Six-step troubleshooting workflow
Work through these checks in order. They move from reversible display issues to account-side evidence, so you do not mistake a visibility setting for lost data.

- Confirm the account and remove Library filters. Sign out if necessary and sign back in to the account that purchased or played the title. Open Library, clear collection, installed-only, hidden, platform or other restrictive filters, and set the view to show all games. Steam lists wrong-account sign-ins and Library filters among common reasons games appear missing in its Games Are Missing from my Library guidance. If the title is not listed after filters are removed, verify the purchase or license on that account before investigating achievements.
- Check whether the game is private. In Steam, open your profile’s privacy controls (for example, Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings) and review the game-details setting. Also check the title’s game-management privacy option where available. A private game does not appear in other users’ Community profile game lists or achievement showcases, as documented by Steam Support. Set the game or game details to the desired visibility, then ask the other viewer to reload your profile. Do not confuse this with hiding the title only in your own Library.
- Refresh both Steam views. Fully exit the Steam client rather than merely closing the window, launch it again, sign in, and open the title’s achievement page from the Library. Then open the same title through the Steam Community profile. Comparing both locations helps identify a stale client display versus a profile visibility issue. A refresh does not guarantee that server-side records are repaired; it only ensures you are viewing current client and Community data. Steamworks describes the account association and Community presentation of achievement data in its Stats and Achievements documentation.
- Separate base-game and DLC sets. Look for a set selector, DLC name, different achievement count or independent progress percentage. Check that the DLC is installed or owned on the same account and that you are viewing the intended branch or edition of the game. Under Valve’s Achievement Sets model, separate progress is expected behavior, so leave both groups in place when their achievement lists differ. The feature and its archived-set behavior are described in the Valve announcement.
- Verify the app identity and synchronization state. Record the title’s app ID from its Steam store or Community URL, the installed DLC, and whether the title is visible while you are signed in. Steam Cloud organizes user data by app ID. Open the game’s properties and note any Cloud synchronization warning, then allow Steam to finish syncing before launching repeatedly or switching devices. Steam’s Steam Cloud support page warns that synchronization can fail temporarily and that lost cloud data may not be recoverable.
- Escalate with a complete evidence packet. If the discrepancy remains, contact Steam Support and include the exact title, app ID, account ownership evidence, screenshots of every group, the achievement page URL if available, DLC ownership, and whether the problem appears only to other users or also in your signed-in client. State the time of the last successful display and any Cloud warning. This allows support to distinguish privacy, Achievement Set grouping and account-data problems instead of sending you through generic display steps.
Diagnose the symptom you actually have

Privacy settings: public profile versus hidden Library entry
Use the privacy check when the achievements are present for you but absent to friends or to a public profile viewer. Steam’s private-game behavior covers ownership, play activity and achievement showcases together; changing only a Library organization setting will not make a private title public.
After changing privacy, check the profile while signed in and, if possible, from a separate account or a logged-out browser. This tests the audience that reported the problem. If the title is visible to you but not to others, capture both views for support rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Cloud synchronization and data safety
Steam Cloud is a synchronization service, not an achievement-repair utility. Its data is organized by app ID, so installing a similarly named edition, test branch or separate DLC application can produce a different data context. The Steam Cloud documentation notes that sync failures can be temporary and cautions that lost cloud data may not be recoverable.

Before changing files or devices
- Write down the app ID, account name (without sharing your password), installed DLC and branch.
- Screenshot the Cloud conflict or error message and the current achievement groups.
- Let Steam complete a pending synchronization before launching on another computer.
- Do not assume deleting local files, adding storage or reinstalling the client will restore account records.
If a conflict dialog offers local and cloud copies, stop and document the choices before selecting one. When the issue concerns account-side achievements rather than a local save, Steam Support is the appropriate escalation path.

How to tell a display issue from an account-data issue
Likely display or privacy issue
- The achievements appear in the signed-in client but not on a public profile.
- Changing privacy or clearing a Library filter changes what you can see.
- A full client restart makes the expected set list reappear.
Likely grouping or entitlement issue
- The second group has a DLC label, a separate progress total or a different achievement list.
- Another player sees an archived group that you never earned.
- The title has multiple editions, branches or app IDs.
Requires Steam Support review
- The same account, app ID and privacy settings show different achievement records across Steam views after a restart.
- A Cloud error persists and the expected set or unlocks are absent on every signed-in view.
- You can provide screenshots and ownership evidence, but the profile still shows an incorrect set structure.
What not to do
Do not buy hardware, expand storage or use third-party “achievement repair” tools in the hope of fixing an account record. Those actions do not change Steam privacy, Achievement Set configuration or server-side account association. Do not repeatedly switch Cloud copies without recording the state first; Valve warns that unrecoverable cloud loss is possible. Keep the investigation focused on account identity, visibility, set design and synchronization.
Information to include in a Steam Support request
A precise report shortens the back-and-forth. Include:
- Game title, edition and app ID.
- Steam account ownership evidence, with sensitive payment details redacted.
- Whether the game is private, hidden only in the Library, or visible publicly.
- Screenshots of each achievement group, progress totals and any set selector.
- DLC owned and installed, selected branch, and the date or approximate time the display changed.
- Cloud synchronization status and the exact error text.
- Whether the discrepancy occurs in the signed-in client, the Community profile, or only for another viewer.
