There is no universal status-icon replacement switch. What you can personalize depends on whether you mean a phone’s system indicators, an app’s notification icon, a macOS menu-bar item, or a Windows taskbar/tray icon. It also depends on your role: a regular user can usually control visibility, an app developer controls that app’s presentation, and an OEM or system developer can change deeper system resources.

Identify the device and operating-system version before following any procedure. Android manufacturer interfaces, Windows builds, and app capabilities differ. The same request—such as changing Wi-Fi artwork or the color of a status bar—can be possible for an app while remaining unavailable for the operating system’s own indicator.

What “status icons” can mean

Status icons are small indicators placed in a system bar or application surface. They are not one standardized feature.

System indicators

These show device state, such as cellular signal, Wi-Fi, battery, time, focus or connectivity. The operating system owns their meaning and normally controls their artwork. Replacing them generally requires system-level configuration, an OEM build, or unsupported modification rather than an ordinary Settings toggle.

App notification icons

An app can post a notification with its own small icon. Notification-channel settings may let you control whether that notification appears, but they do not replace the operating system’s Wi-Fi, battery or signal symbols. Icon shape, color treatment and contrast are constrained by each platform’s notification rules.

Menu-bar and taskbar items

macOS apps can place status items in the menu bar. Windows applications can expose a notification-area (system-tray) icon and may display a badge on a taskbar button. These are app-provided items, even though they sit beside system indicators.

Four levels of control

Change you want Who normally controls it What is realistic
Show or hide an app indicator Regular user, through notification or taskbar settings Often supported, subject to the app and operating-system build
Change an app’s status-bar presentation App developer Color, contrast, transparent or translucent bars, and layout around system bars can be implemented within platform rules
Rearrange or resize system icons OEM or system developer Android Open Source Project (AOSP) exposes resources and global configuration variables; this is not proof of a consumer toggle
Replace system artwork everywhere OS vendor, OEM or heavily modified system Usually unavailable to an ordinary user and can break updates, accessibility or security assumptions

Before changing anything, write down the device model, operating-system release, app name and the exact icon you mean. A notification bell and a cellular-signal glyph may occupy the same bar but have entirely different controls.

Android: separate system configuration from app design

Android is the platform where documentation most clearly separates system-level icon configuration from application presentation. AOSP documents configurable resources for system-icon size, spacing, visibility and order. Those resources are intended for platform or device development, not as a standard Settings path available on every phone.

What a regular Android user can usually change

Consumer controls are manufacturer- and version-specific. Depending on the phone, you may be able to manage notification visibility, status-bar notification behavior, immersive or full-screen display, and selected quick-settings or tray items. The exact labels and locations must be verified on the phone itself; an AOSP resource name is not a tap-by-tap instruction for a retail handset.

Use the Settings search field for terms such as status bar, notifications, system icons, full screen or display over other apps. If no matching control appears, the manufacturer may not expose it. A launcher, icon pack or notification manager can alter an app surface, but it cannot reliably redraw protected system indicators.

What an Android app developer can change

Android developer guidance covers the status-bar appearance used by an app: foreground and background contrast, transparent or translucent bars, and fitting content around system bars. The guidance also states that edge-to-edge is enforced on Android 15. An app therefore needs to test layouts with system bars visible, with gesture navigation, and on devices that apply different cutouts or insets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide whether the screen needs a visible status bar. Keep state information available unless the experience is genuinely immersive, such as video playback.
  2. Choose a bar treatment. Set a background that preserves contrast, or use a transparent or translucent treatment only when content and text remain legible.
  3. Apply system-bar insets. Do not place headings, buttons or touch targets beneath icons or a camera cutout. On Android 15, edge-to-edge behavior is enforced, so layouts that relied on an opaque bar need review.
  4. Test light and dark icon modes. A light background may require dark status-bar icons, while a dark background may require light icons. Check contrast on real devices and in both themes.
  5. Verify notification icons separately. The icon supplied to a notification follows notification and launcher constraints; changing the app’s status-bar color does not change the Wi-Fi or battery glyph.

What an OEM or system developer can change

AOSP’s status-bar documentation describes system resources and global configuration variables for icon dimensions, spacing, visibility and ordering. A device builder can use those hooks when producing a system image, but the result is tied to that build and its System UI implementation. It should not be presented as a universal method for phones running unmodified consumer software.

Android limitations and failure modes

  • A setting is missing: confirm the Android release and manufacturer skin. A menu documented for one device may not exist on another.
  • Icons change only inside one app: that is expected; app APIs do not grant ownership of the global System UI.
  • Icons overlap content: update the app’s inset handling for edge-to-edge and display cutouts instead of adding arbitrary padding.
  • Colors look inverted or unreadable: test the platform’s light/dark system-bar mode and increase contrast; do not rely on a single wallpaper or theme.
  • A modification disappears after an update: system-resource changes belong to a particular build and may be overwritten by an OTA update.

iPhone and iPad: the status bar is primarily system information

Apple describes the status bar as a place for device-state information and prioritizes legibility. The reviewed design guidance does not establish a general user feature for replacing the system’s Wi-Fi, cellular, battery or time symbols.

User-facing options

On iPhone and iPad, treat the system status bar as managed by the operating system. You can control the app’s notifications through Settings, and some apps can enter a full-screen presentation, but notification controls are not a license to substitute new system artwork. If an icon’s meaning is unclear, Apple’s support guide, Learn the meaning of iPhone status icons, explains the standard indicators.

App developer guidance

Apple’s status-bar guidance focuses on preserving readability against the app’s content and on using appropriate appearance settings. The design rule is explicit: Avoid permanently hiding the status bar. Temporary hiding can be appropriate for full-screen media or another deliberately immersive task, but a normal information screen should not remove device-state information merely to gain a few pixels.

  1. Choose the bar style for the screen. Match foreground treatment to the background so time and state indicators remain readable.
  2. Handle safe areas. Keep controls clear of the status region, sensor housing and any device-specific inset.
  3. Use immersive mode selectively. Hide the bar only for a task that benefits from uninterrupted content, and restore it when the user returns to ordinary navigation.
  4. Check multiple devices and orientations. The available safe area and sensor geometry vary between iPhone and iPad models.

Changing an app’s navigation-bar or status-bar appearance affects that app’s screens. It does not replace Apple’s global system icons for every app.

macOS: create a menu-bar status item instead of replacing system icons

macOS AppKit provides the NSStatusBar API for app-created status items. An item can contain text, an icon, a menu, actions or a custom view. This is the supported route for adding an indicator to the menu bar.

Developer implementation choices

  • Icon-only item: useful for a compact state indicator, provided the symbol remains recognizable at menu-bar size.
  • Text or text-plus-icon: useful for a value such as a count or connection state, but it consumes more horizontal space.
  • Menu and actions: let users inspect status or perform a quick command without opening the main window.
  • Custom view: supports richer drawing when a standard template image is insufficient, but increases testing and accessibility work.

Apple cautions that menu-bar space is limited. Use status items sparingly and let users hide them. A well-behaved app should provide a preference or menu command to disable the item, avoid constant animation, and expose an accessible label and actions through standard AppKit accessibility support.

What macOS users can and cannot do

Users can often remove or rearrange supported menu-bar items through the app’s own preferences or macOS controls, depending on the item. That does not mean arbitrary replacement of Apple’s system icons. A third-party utility may add its own indicator, but it still cannot safely redefine the meaning of protected system symbols across the operating system.

Windows: tray visibility and taskbar badges are narrower controls

Windows documentation covers two related but distinct features: choosing which supported system-tray icons appear and showing or hiding app badges on taskbar buttons. These controls manage visibility and notification treatment; they do not provide unrestricted replacement of every system icon.

Show or hide supported tray items

On current Windows builds, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and look for sections such as Other system tray icons, Taskbar corner overflow or similarly named controls. Labels vary by Windows release. Use the switches to decide which supported icons stay visible or move into the overflow area. If an item is not listed, its application may use a different integration or may not expose a user switch.

Control taskbar app badges

In the same Taskbar settings area, Windows provides a setting for showing badges on taskbar buttons. Turning badges off removes the count or alert overlay from supported app buttons; it does not change the app’s underlying icon file or the operating system’s tray artwork.

Developer considerations

A Windows application can provide a notification-area icon and update its tooltip, context menu and state. It should use a clear icon at the sizes Windows requests, respond to high-contrast and theme conditions, and avoid using a tray icon as a substitute for an urgent notification. The user should be able to exit or disable the background component through the app’s documented controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows troubleshooting

  • The icon is in overflow: open the tray overflow area and move the supported item using the current Taskbar settings.
  • A badge remains: check both the Windows badge setting and the app’s own notification preference.
  • The icon is blurry: the application may be supplying an unsuitable raster size; update the app rather than forcing a system-wide replacement.
  • The setting is absent: confirm the Windows build and whether the item is a system icon, a Store app notification, or a background utility.

How to decide what is possible

  1. Name the platform and version. Record Android version and manufacturer, iOS or iPadOS version, macOS release, or Windows build.
  2. Describe the icon precisely. Say “Wi-Fi signal,” “battery,” “notification from one app,” “menu-bar item,” or “taskbar badge.”
  3. Classify the requested change. Is the goal to hide it, move it, change its color, change an app’s icon, or replace system artwork?
  4. Check built-in controls first. Search the operating system’s notification, display, status-bar or taskbar settings before installing a utility.
  5. Use the correct documentation layer. Consumer support pages explain visibility controls; developer documentation explains APIs; AOSP or OEM material applies only to system builders.
  6. Test after updates. System-bar behavior, edge-to-edge rules and settings labels can change between releases.

Common questions answered without guesswork

Can you change the status-bar icon color?

Sometimes, but usually only for an app’s own screen. Android and Apple provide app-level appearance controls that affect contrast and legibility. A regular user generally cannot recolor every system-owned Wi-Fi, cellular or battery symbol through a universal setting.

Can you change how Wi-Fi and cellular icons look?

Not as a normal cross-platform user feature. Those are system indicators. An OEM or system developer may alter resources in a platform build, while an app developer controls only the app’s bars and notifications.

Will an icon pack change status icons?

Not reliably. Icon packs commonly affect launchers or app icons. They do not automatically replace protected System UI artwork, and behavior varies by manufacturer.

Why does an app icon look different in the status bar?

Notification icons are rendered under platform-specific rules for size, masking, tint and contrast. The notification icon is separate from the global system indicators and may be normalized by the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did an Android layout break after an update?

Android 15 enforces edge-to-edge behavior. An app that assumed content would stop below an opaque status bar must now handle system-bar insets and cutouts explicitly.

Can I hide the iPhone status bar permanently?

Apple’s guidance says to avoid permanently hiding it. An app may temporarily hide the bar for an immersive experience such as full-screen media, but that is an app presentation choice, not a system-wide replacement feature.

Can a macOS app add a custom status indicator?

Yes. AppKit’s NSStatusBar supports app-created menu-bar items with icons, text, menus, actions or custom views. The item should be compact, accessible and optional because menu-bar space is limited.

Can Windows replace all tray icons with a custom set?

No documented general control does that. Windows lets users choose visibility for supported tray items and control taskbar badges; application developers supply their own notification-area icons.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Confirm the exact operating system, version and device model.
  • Determine whether the symbol is a system indicator, an app notification, a menu-bar item or a taskbar/tray item.
  • Look in built-in notification, display, status-bar or taskbar settings before using third-party tools.
  • For app development, test light and dark themes, contrast, safe areas, cutouts, accessibility and multiple screen sizes.
  • Do not treat AOSP resource names or developer APIs as consumer instructions.
  • If a customization vanishes after an update, check release notes and the device maker’s documentation; system-level changes are build-specific.

The Bottom Line

Status-icon personalization is possible within defined boundaries: users can often control visibility, developers can style their own app indicators, and OEM or system developers can alter deeper resources. Identify the platform and the exact icon first; no single method safely replaces system status artwork across Android, iPhone, macOS and Windows.
