Statistical uncertainty comes from finite samples and random fluctuations; it usually gets smaller as independent observations accumulate. A systematic effect shifts measurements in a consistent direction or changes their scale, so collecting more data alone usually does not remove it. When two precise experiments disagree, physicists test how the difference behaves with more data, audit the measurement model, isolate possible biases with controls and alternate analyses, quantify correlations, and then combine uncertainty components with a documented propagation method.

What the two terms mean

In a physics result, the central value is an estimate of a measurand—the quantity the experiment intends to determine. An uncertainty describes the dispersion of values reasonably attributable to that measurand, not a guarantee that the true value lies inside a particular interval. The first diagnostic question is whether the observed variation is caused by limited information and random observation noise, or by a mechanism that consistently pushes the result away from the intended value.

Statistical uncertainty

Statistical uncertainty is produced by finite samples or repeated-observation noise. Counting fluctuations are the familiar example: if an experiment records a limited number of events, a different but otherwise identical run would produce a somewhat different count. Random detector noise, timing jitter and sampling variation can produce the same pattern. For independent observations, the standard error generally decreases as the sample grows—often approximately with the inverse square root of the number of observations. That scaling is a useful diagnostic, not a universal proof that every remaining difference is statistical.

Systematic effects

A systematic effect is a bias or scale error that can move a result without creating a conspicuous spread among repeated measurements. An incorrectly calibrated energy scale, a detector whose response is modelled inaccurately, an efficiency estimate that is too high, or a background model that omits a process can shift every result in the same direction. Repeating the measurement under the same conditions can therefore produce very consistent but wrong values. More events reduce the statistical component while leaving the offset essentially unchanged until the underlying cause is corrected or better constrained.

Error, uncertainty, precision and accuracy

NIST cautions that the actual error—the difference between a reported value and the unknown true value—is usually unknowable. In practical reporting, scientists estimate uncertainty components instead. Precision describes the closeness of successive independent measurements to one another; accuracy concerns closeness to the true value. A tightly clustered result can be precise but inaccurate if a shared calibration or model is biased.

Aspect Statistical component Systematic component
Typical origin Finite sample, counting fluctuation or random observation noise Calibration, detector response, selection efficiency, background or modelling bias
Effect of more independent data Usually decreases the standard error Usually unchanged unless the extra data constrain or reveal the source
Appearance in repeats Produces a spread around an underlying value Can produce a stable offset with little additional spread
Typical diagnostic Check sample-size scaling and repeatability Change calibration, controls, selections, settings or analysis model
How it is reduced Collect independent observations or improve random-noise control Calibrate, measure a control sample, improve the model or use an independent method

Why precise experiments can disagree

Two experiments may report small total uncertainties and still disagree because their uncertainties do not describe the same things. Their central values may depend on different reference standards, detector calibrations, event selections, background estimates, theoretical calculations or simulation assumptions. A quoted error bar can also omit a bias that has not been recognized or quantified.

The comparison must therefore go beyond total error bars. Physicists examine the central values, the statistical uncertainty, every named systematic component, the inputs shared by both analyses, the calibration and control strategy, model dependence, and whether independent analysis choices reproduce the result. A smaller quoted uncertainty is not automatically stronger evidence when an important correlation or unquantified bias remains.

Shared inputs create correlation

If two analyses use the same luminosity calibration, reference mass, detector response, theory prediction or simulated sample, a shift in that input can move both results together. Treating those components as independent exaggerates the amount of independent information. Conversely, ignoring a genuine anti-correlation can make a difference look smaller than it is. The covariance between measurements belongs in the comparison, not just their separate totals.

A stable difference is a clue, not a verdict

If the difference between results remains roughly constant while each experiment collects more data, a systematic contribution becomes more plausible. If it fluctuates and shrinks according to the expected statistical scaling, a finite-sample explanation is more plausible. Neither pattern proves the cause: a systematic effect can vary with conditions, and a statistical fluctuation can persist temporarily. The pattern tells investigators which tests to perform next.

How physicists investigate a discrepancy

A discrepancy investigation is a sequence of checks rather than a choice between “random” and “systematic” made from the final numbers alone.

1. Define the measurand and measurement equation

Write down exactly what is being reported, including its units, reference conditions and any corrections. Express the result as a measurement equation: the observed signals, calibration constants, efficiencies, backgrounds and model parameters that produce the final value. NIST process-characterization guidance frames the task as understanding and quantifying how each error source affects that specific reported value.

  1. State the physical quantity and reference definition.
  2. List the measured inputs and externally supplied constants.
  3. Show every correction, efficiency factor and transformation between raw data and the published result.
  4. Record assumptions, fit ranges, selection criteria and model choices.

This step prevents an apparently simple disagreement from hiding different definitions of the quantity being compared.

2. Check repeatability and data-size scaling

Separate the result into statistically independent data periods or subsamples. Plot the estimate and its uncertainty as the sample grows. A component that falls with additional independent observations is consistent with statistical variation. A component that remains nearly fixed suggests a bias, a shared input or a modelling limitation. Check whether the uncertainty reduction follows the expected scaling; unexpected saturation can reveal a systematic floor.

3. Inventory possible bias sources

Build a source-by-source table in the units of the final result. Typical entries include:

  • Calibration constants and reference standards
  • Detector response, gain, dead time and energy or momentum scale
  • Geometric alignment and time-dependent hardware conditions
  • Temperature, pressure, magnetic field and other environmental variables
  • Trigger, event selection and reconstruction efficiency
  • Background rates, shapes and subtraction procedures
  • Simulation assumptions, theoretical inputs and missing higher-order effects
  • Data-quality exclusions, fit ranges and alternative parameterizations

For each source, estimate the shift caused by a plausible variation, document how that variation was chosen, and retain its sign and correlation information. A source is not made statistical merely because its estimate came from a fit, nor systematic merely because it is listed in a “systematics” table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Use controls and deliberate changes

Control samples with known or independently constrained properties test calibration and backgrounds. Reversed detector settings, different run periods, alternate reference standards and deliberately varied environmental conditions can expose a hidden dependence. Repeating the analysis with a different event selection or reconstruction algorithm tests whether one pipeline is responsible. Independent calibrations and separate analysis teams are especially valuable because they break shared assumptions.

Agreement after a relevant change weakens a single-source explanation. A shift that follows the changed condition points toward that source. If several methods move together, investigate a common input before treating their agreement as independent confirmation.

5. Test correlations before comparing or combining

Statistical components are often independent between data sets, while systematic components may be shared. Classify every pair of inputs as independent, correlated, or anti-correlated where the evidence permits, and state what is assumed when it does not. Correlations can change both the significance of a discrepancy and the uncertainty of a combined estimate.

6. Quantify, combine and report

After identifying the components, propagate them to the reported quantity. For independent standard uncertainties, the common root-sum-of-squares calculation is:

u_combined = sqrt(u1² + u2² + … + un²)

When inputs are correlated, include covariance terms:

u_combined² = Σi Σj ci cj Cov(xi, xj)

Here, ci is the sensitivity of the result to input xi, and Cov(xi, xj) is their covariance. The simple quadrature formula is valid only when the relevant covariances are zero. For non-linear relationships or strongly non-Gaussian uncertainties, analysts may use a full covariance propagation, toy Monte Carlo, likelihood profiling or another documented method.

Type A and Type B are not synonyms for random and systematic

NIST uses Type A for an evaluation based on statistical analysis of a series of observations and Type B for an evaluation based on other information or methods, such as calibration certificates, specifications, prior measurements or expert assessment. These labels describe how the uncertainty was evaluated, not the physical origin of the effect.

A calibration uncertainty may be evaluated statistically from repeated calibration data (Type A), while a random-looking contribution may be bounded from a specification or previous study (Type B). NIST therefore warns that there is no simple one-to-one correspondence between Type A/Type B and random/systematic classifications. A complete uncertainty budget can contain both evaluation types for effects that investigators would conventionally call systematic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Corrections do not erase systematic uncertainty

Suppose an instrument is known to read 0.8 units high and the analysis subtracts 0.8 units. The correction may remove the estimated bias from the central value, but the estimate is not exact. If the correction is uncertain by 0.2 units, that 0.2-unit uncertainty enters the budget. NIST states that the uncertainty of a correction applied for a systematic effect is not the systematic error itself; it represents incomplete knowledge of the correction.

Report the uncorrected observation, the correction, the rationale for applying it, and the uncertainty attached to the correction when those details matter. This makes it possible for another analysis to use a different calibration or to propagate a shared correction without counting it twice.

A concrete scale: the ATLAS W-boson result

An ATLAS Collaboration measurement reported a W-boson mass uncertainty of 7 MeV statistical, 11 MeV experimental-systematic and 14 MeV modelling-systematic uncertainty. The combined uncertainty was 19 MeV. The total is consistent with quadrature: sqrt(7² + 11² + 14²) ≈ 19 MeV.

The example shows why a large data set does not automatically make the result precise in every respect. The statistical term is the smallest of the three; further events would primarily attack that term, while detector and modelling work is needed to reduce the others. The figures belong to that ATLAS analysis and should not be treated as universal proportions for all W-boson measurements or all experiments.

How to decide whether an anomaly is real

An anomaly is more credible when it survives tests that target different failure modes:

  • It appears in independent data-taking periods and remains under reasonable sample re-splitting.
  • Independent calibrations and control samples show no unexplained shift.
  • Alternative selections, reconstruction pipelines and fit models give compatible central values.
  • Known systematic variations are propagated with their correlations and do not account for the effect.
  • A separate experiment or detector observes a compatible signal using different dominant systematics.
  • The discrepancy has a pre-specified test statistic or likelihood treatment, rather than a significance chosen after inspecting many possible effects.

A result that disappears after one calibration change, follows a background-control failure or relies on a single model choice is better described as an unresolved measurement issue than as established new physics. Conversely, a stable signal can still be statistical: a rare fluctuation may look persistent until enough independent data arrive. The appropriate conclusion is calibrated to the remaining uncertainty budget and the number of tests performed.

Comparing two published measurements: a practical checklist

Before deciding that two values conflict, place the following information side by side:

Item Question to answer
Central value Are the measurands, units, reference definitions and corrections identical?
Statistical uncertainty What data set and independence assumptions determine it?
Systematic components Which calibration, detector, selection, background and modelling terms dominate?
Correlations Do the analyses share standards, simulations, data periods or theory inputs?
Controls Which control samples or reversals test the leading biases?
Alternative analyses Do independent selections, fits or pipelines reproduce the value?
Combination method Were covariance terms and non-Gaussian effects included?

Only after these checks should you translate a difference into a significance or a combined value. Comparing central values with two independent-looking error bars can be misleading when the dominant uncertainties are shared or when one budget excludes a plausible bias.

Calling every repeatable shift “random”

Repeatability can demonstrate precision while a common shift remains. Compare against an external reference or an independently calibrated method.

Adding uncertainties linearly by default

Linear addition is conservative in some bounded-error contexts but is not the standard combination for independent standard uncertainties. Use the method justified by the measurement model and state it; use covariance terms when inputs are correlated.

Treating Type B as “less scientific”

Type B is an evaluation route, not a quality ranking. A calibration certificate or engineering specification can be the best available evidence for an uncertainty component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Double-counting a shared source

If a calibration uncertainty is already included in two component estimates, adding it again inflates the total. Maintain a named uncertainty budget with ownership and correlation assumptions for every source.

What a transparent result should report

A useful publication gives the central value, the definition of the measurand, separate statistical and systematic components, the dominant sources, the correction procedure, the data and control samples used, and the combination or covariance method. It should identify which components are common with earlier measurements and explain how alternative analyses change the result. This detail lets readers distinguish a smaller random error from a genuinely improved measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a larger sample always make a measurement more accurate?

No. A larger independent sample generally reduces statistical uncertainty, but a shared calibration bias, detector effect or modelling error can leave the result systematically displaced. Accuracy improves only when those effects are also controlled or corrected.

Can one uncertainty component be both statistical and systematic?

The physical effect and the evaluation method are separate questions. For example, a calibration uncertainty may be estimated from repeated data (Type A) even though it represents a systematic calibration limitation. Type A and Type B do not map one-to-one onto random and systematic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two results with overlapping error bars still be in tension?

Overlap depends on the individual intervals and does not account automatically for shared correlations, non-Gaussian likelihoods, look-elsewhere effects or different measurands. A formal comparison must use the covariance and statistical model appropriate to both results.
