Static and dynamic describe how an IP address is assigned and whether it is intended to stay the same. A static address is deliberately kept for the same device or internet connection. A dynamic address is leased automatically from an address pool and may change when the lease is renewed, a router reconnects, or an internet provider reallocates addresses. Most home users need only a dynamic public address; a static public address becomes worthwhile when people or systems outside your network must reliably connect to a service at a known address.
The choice is not a security shortcut. Firewalls, timely updates, strong authentication, least-privilege access and network segmentation protect a network far more than the word static or dynamic on an ISP plan.
Static and dynamic IP addresses at a glance
| Aspect | Static IP address | Dynamic IP address |
|---|---|---|
| Assignment | Chosen deliberately and retained for a device or connection, either by an administrator or an ISP. | Assigned automatically, normally by DHCP, from a reusable pool. |
| Stability | Intended to remain unchanged until an administrator or provider changes it. | Can change after lease renewal, reconnection, equipment replacement or provider reallocation. |
| Typical public use | Web, mail, file-transfer or VPN servers; remote desktop; cameras; services that must be reached at a known endpoint. | Browsing, streaming, gaming, social media and other outbound connections. |
| Local-network use | A manually configured address or a DHCP reservation can keep a printer, server or camera on a predictable private address. | The router assigns private addresses automatically to phones, computers and other clients. |
| Administration | Requires accurate address, gateway, DNS and firewall records, plus change management. | Reduces manual setup and lets the provider reuse a finite address pool. |
| Price | Often a business add-on or part of a specialized plan; fees and availability vary by ISP and geography. | Generally included with ordinary internet service. |
| Security | More predictable and therefore easier to document and reach, but also a persistent target. | A changing address can reduce persistence of one identifier, but does not replace security controls. |
What static and dynamic actually mean
Static means deliberately stable
A static IP is assigned with the intention that the same address will continue to identify the same device or connection. An administrator can enter the address directly on a server, or an ISP can reserve a public address for a customer. The address is not supposed to change simply because a lease expires or a home router restarts.
Static does not mean permanently immutable. The administrator can reconfigure it, an ISP can renumber a service, or a plan can be cancelled. It means stability is part of the assignment policy, not that change is impossible.

Dynamic means leased and potentially changeable
A dynamic IP is supplied automatically for a limited lease period. The address comes from a pool that the DHCP server can reuse. A client may receive the same address repeatedly, but the provider is free to issue another one when the lease is renewed, the connection returns after an outage, the router’s identity changes or the pool is reorganized.
Dynamic is therefore about the method and expectation of assignment, not a promise that the number will change every day. Seeing the same public address after several reboots does not prove that the service is static.
How DHCP leases and reservations work
Microsoft Learn defines DHCP as a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information.
In a typical exchange, a device asks for network configuration, a DHCP server offers an available address, the device accepts it and the server records a lease expiration time.
Recommended Free Tools
- Discovery: the client broadcasts that it needs configuration.
- Offer: the DHCP server proposes an address and settings such as subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers.
- Request: the client requests the offered configuration.
- Acknowledgment: the server confirms the lease and its duration.
- Renewal or return: the client renews the lease before it expires; when the address is no longer in use, the server can return it to the pool for another client.
Palo Alto Networks distinguishes this dynamic allocation from static allocation selected by an administrator. A local DHCP reservation sits between those approaches: the router still uses DHCP, but it always offers a chosen private address to a particular device identifier, usually its MAC address. That gives a printer, NAS, camera or internal server a predictable LAN address without buying a fixed public address from an ISP.
Reservation versus manual configuration
With a reservation, the router remains the source of truth. You change the address in one place, and the device continues to obtain gateway and DNS settings automatically. With a manually configured static private address, you enter the IP, subnet, gateway and DNS values on the device itself. Manual settings can work for infrastructure that must start before DHCP is available, but a typo, duplicate address or changed subnet can make the device unreachable.

Public and private addresses are different decisions
Your ISP assigns an address on the internet-facing side of the router; this is the public address that outside services see. The router normally gives each device inside the home or office a private address, and network address translation lets many private devices share one public address.
A static private address does not make your internet connection’s public address static. Conversely, paying an ISP for a static public address does not require every phone and laptop on the LAN to have manually configured addresses. You can use a static public address with ordinary DHCP clients, and you can use reservations for internal devices while retaining a dynamic public address.
When a service is hosted internally, you also need a routing rule (often called port forwarding or a firewall destination rule) that sends the selected traffic from the public interface to the correct private address. If the ISP or upstream network does not permit inbound connections, a static address alone will not solve that limitation.
When a static public IP is useful
Web, mail and file-transfer servers
A public server must have an endpoint that users and other servers can find consistently. WatchGuard puts the principle plainly: If you have a web server, FTP server, or other Internet resource that must have an address that cannot change, you can get a static IP address from your ISP.
Mail systems in particular depend on stable DNS and carefully maintained reputation records; moving an address unexpectedly can interrupt delivery or require changes at multiple providers.
Business VPN and remote desktop
A site-to-site VPN, an employee VPN gateway or a remote-desktop host is easier to configure when the peer connects to an address that does not move. Rules can limit access to the known endpoint, certificates and documentation can refer to it, and a second site does not have to discover a new address after every provider change.

Security cameras and monitoring systems
Some camera recorders and monitoring platforms accept direct inbound connections. A fixed public endpoint simplifies the app or monitoring station configuration, especially when several locations must be listed. Use encrypted protocols, unique credentials and a tightly scoped firewall rule; exposing a camera interface to the internet without those controls creates a serious risk.
Allow lists and managed equipment
Cloud consoles, partner networks and corporate firewalls sometimes allow connections only from registered source addresses. A static public address avoids repeated allow-list changes when the ISP renews a lease. Confirm that the partner expects an IPv4 address, an IPv6 prefix or a particular range before ordering service.
When a dynamic address is enough
Dynamic addressing is the normal fit when connections start inside your network. Web browsing, video and music streaming, software updates, online games, messaging, social networks and most cloud applications send traffic outward and receive replies over an established session. Those activities do not require strangers to initiate a connection to a known address.
Many consumer routers and applications are designed for this model. They use outbound connections, automatic discovery or a relay service, so an occasional public-address change is invisible to the user. A dynamic address also reduces manual work for the ISP and allows a finite pool to serve more customers over time.
If you occasionally host a game or share a file, check the application’s current networking method before paying for a static address. It may support a relay, a peer-invitation system or another method that does not depend on a permanent public endpoint.

Remote access when your public address changes
Dynamic DNS
Dynamic DNS associates a hostname with your current public address. A client in the router or on a server notices an address change and updates the DNS record. Remote users then connect to the hostname instead of memorizing a number. This is useful only when inbound traffic is allowed and the update client, DNS record and router are compatible. Check the provider’s current supported domains, update protocol, account security and retention policy.
VPN overlays
A VPN overlay can create an authenticated private path between devices or sites, allowing remote access without publishing every service directly. The overlay still needs compatible clients, identity controls and a reachable coordination path. Restrict which devices and ports can communicate; a VPN that places every remote device on the entire LAN defeats least-privilege design.
Provider-managed relays
Some camera, storage and remote-support products maintain an outbound connection to a provider that relays sessions back to the device. This can work behind restrictive routers, but it shifts trust, availability and privacy to that provider. Read the current terms, encryption details, retention policy and account-recovery process before relying on it for business access.
Is a static IP more secure?
No. Static versus dynamic is not a complete security decision. A static address is easier to document and reach, which helps administration, but its persistence also gives an attacker a consistent target. A changing address may make one identifier less persistent, yet scanners, stolen credentials, application flaws and other identifiers can still expose a system.
| Control | Why it matters more than IP type |
|---|---|
| Firewall policy | Permit only required ports and source networks; deny unsolicited traffic by default. |
| Software updates | Patch the operating system, router, camera, VPN server and applications before vulnerabilities are exploited. |
| Authentication | Use unique passwords, multifactor authentication where available and certificates or keys for machine access. |
| Least privilege | Give each account and service only the permissions it needs; separate administration from ordinary use. |
| Segmentation | Keep cameras, guest devices and untrusted equipment away from sensitive workstations and servers. |
| Monitoring and recovery | Record connection attempts, alert on unusual activity and maintain tested backups and an access-revocation plan. |
Verizon describes private IP layers and additional controls such as multifactor authentication and single sign-on. Those controls, not whether the public address changes, determine most of the practical security outcome.

Cost and administration trade-offs
Dynamic public addressing is generally included in ordinary ISP service because assignment and renewal are automatic. Static addresses may be sold as business add-ons or included in specialized plans. Exact fees, address types, support levels and availability vary by ISP and geography, so request a current quotation rather than assuming a universal price.
A static service also creates an administrative obligation. Record the assigned address, subnet or prefix, gateway, DNS servers, reverse-DNS requirements, firewall rules, certificates, monitoring and escalation contacts. When staff or equipment changes, update those records together. A forgotten rule can leave a service exposed; a missing DNS change can make it unreachable.
DHCP reservations usually reduce this burden for internal devices. The router centralizes the mapping and can continue supplying the correct gateway and DNS values, avoiding many manual-device errors.

Use a reservation when the requirement is simply that a device keeps the same address inside your home or office.
- Inventory the device: note its hostname and hardware or client identifier, and confirm which LAN or wireless network it uses.
- Open the router’s LAN or DHCP settings: the exact label varies by model; look for DHCP clients, address reservations or static leases.
- Create the reservation: select the device, choose an unused private address as the router permits, and save the mapping.
- Renew the client: disconnect and reconnect the network, restart the device or use its operating-system lease-renewal control.
- Verify: check the device’s address, default gateway and DNS values, then test the application that needs the predictable address.
- Document the change: record the device, address, purpose and date so another administrator does not reuse it.
If you instead configure a manual address on the device, copy the correct subnet, gateway and DNS values from the network administrator, choose an address that cannot conflict with DHCP clients, and test after a router restart. Do not use both a manual address and a reservation for the same device unless the design explicitly calls for it.
How to obtain and deploy a static public address
- Define the requirement: identify the service, expected inbound ports, users or partner networks, and whether you need IPv4, IPv6 or both.
- Ask the ISP about the current offer: confirm geography, recurring fee, address count, router compatibility, support boundaries, reverse DNS and whether the address is assigned to your router or directly to a managed device.
- Record the handoff details: obtain the address, subnet or prefix, gateway, DNS servers and any authentication or VLAN information in writing.
- Configure the WAN carefully: enter the provider’s values in the router or firewall, then verify that ordinary outbound traffic still works.
- Publish only what is necessary: create DNS records and narrow firewall or port-forwarding rules for the required service. Avoid exposing administrative interfaces.
- Harden and test: apply updates, enable multifactor authentication where supported, test from an external network and confirm that logs and alerts show the expected activity.
- Plan change and failure procedures: keep a backup configuration, document provider contacts and know how to revoke access if the service or address is compromised.

Common misconceptions and failure symptoms
A reboot changed my address, so it must be dynamic
A change is evidence that the address was not guaranteed at that moment, but an unchanged address is not evidence of a static assignment. Only the ISP’s service terms or the administrator’s reservation policy establishes that guarantee.
I reserved a private address, so I bought a static public IP
A reservation affects one device on your LAN. It does not change the public address assigned to the router by the ISP.

Quick Recap
The service is unreachable after switching to a static plan
- Recheck the ISP-provided subnet, gateway and DNS values character for character.
- Confirm the router is using the intended WAN interface and that no old DHCP or PPP credentials remain.
- Check firewall rules, port forwarding and the server’s local listening address.
- Test from a genuinely external network rather than from inside the same LAN, where hairpin behavior may differ.
- Ask the ISP whether inbound ports, reverse DNS or upstream filtering require an additional request.
A camera or server works internally but not from the internet
- Verify that the internal device still has the reserved private address.
- Confirm the router forwards the correct protocol and port to that address.
- Check that the application is listening on the expected interface and that its own firewall allows the connection.
- Determine whether the ISP uses an upstream NAT or other restriction that prevents unsolicited inbound traffic.
- Use a VPN overlay or provider relay if direct exposure is unnecessary or unsupported.
Checklist before you choose
- Identify whether the requirement concerns a public WAN address or only a private LAN address.
- List the services that require inbound connections and the people or systems that must reach them.
- Decide whether a hostname updated by dynamic DNS, a VPN overlay or a provider relay meets the requirement.
- Ask the ISP about address type, recurring fee, geography, inbound filtering, support and change procedures.
- Plan firewall rules, authentication, updates, segmentation, monitoring and recovery before publishing a service.
- Use DHCP reservations for predictable internal addresses unless there is a specific reason to configure them manually.
- Document every address, reservation, DNS record and firewall rule, and test from outside the network.
