A static IP address is intended to stay fixed; a dynamic IP address is assigned automatically for a period of time and may be renewed with the same address. For most home devices, dynamic assignment is a convenient default. Whether you need a stable address depends first on whether you mean the address used inside your home network or the one used beyond it.
What an IP address does
An IP address identifies an interface so it can send and receive traffic in a particular network context. It is not necessarily a permanent identity for a device: the address can depend on the network the device joins and how that network assigns addresses.
At home, devices commonly use private addresses to communicate within the local network. When traffic goes beyond that network, a router or another boundary device may translate the private address through network address translation (NAT). As a result, the address an external service sees can differ from the address shown for a device on the home network. IPv4 and IPv6 can coexist, and networks do not all handle their traffic in the same way. ICANN’s beginner guide to IP addresses explains the basic roles of addresses and NAT.

| Question | Static or reserved assignment | Dynamic assignment |
|---|---|---|
| How is it obtained? | An administrator or device configures it manually, or a server reservation associates a particular address with a device. | A network assigns it automatically, commonly through DHCP, under a lease. |
| How stable is it? | It is intended to remain fixed within the relevant network configuration. | It may remain the same across renewals, but can change if the lease expires, the network changes its allocation, or reassignment is needed. |
| What administration does it require? | Configuration must match the network, and the address must not conflict with another device’s address. | The network manages address allocation, reducing per-device manual setup. |
| Where is it commonly useful? | When a network function needs a predictable address, subject to the network administrator’s design. | For ordinary clients that can rely on automatic network configuration. |
“Static” can mean either a manually configured address or a DHCP reservation. A reservation is managed by the network’s DHCP server; it is not the same as manually entering an address on the device. Router and administrator terminology varies, so check how your network uses the terms.

Why a dynamic IP may not change for a long time
Dynamic does not mean “different every time you connect.” DHCP assigns an address with a lease: a period during which the client may use it. The client can renew the lease, and the server may try to give that client the same address again later. RFC 2131, the IETF’s DHCP specification, says: “The second service provided by DHCP is the allocation of temporary or permanent network (IP) addresses to clients.” The specification also explains that a server can use a lengthy but finite lease even when a client requests a permanent address. Read RFC 2131.
Consequently, a device’s dynamic address can appear unchanged over many connections. That does not make it a guaranteed permanent address: the network controls the lease and allocation, and conditions such as a changed network or reassignment can result in a different address.

Keep your local address separate from your public address
A reservation or manual setting can make a device’s address predictable on the home network. It does not, by itself, make the address visible outside the home stable. In a NAT setup, the router handles traffic between local devices and external networks, so the local and externally used addresses have different roles.
- Need a stable local address? A router reservation or administrator-managed configuration may help, depending on the router, device, and network policy.
- Need a stable public address? Ask your ISP or network administrator about the specific use case and available service. A local reservation does not provide one.
Do not assume a static public address is required for every hosting or remote-access task, or that using a dynamic address prevents those tasks. The right approach depends on the application and network. Address stability alone is not a security measure.

IPv6 can involve several addresses on one interface
The one-device, one-address framing is especially incomplete for IPv6. An interface may have multiple addresses, such as a link-local address, a stable address, privacy addresses, and addresses assigned through DHCPv6. Hosts can also configure addresses from a network prefix using SLAAC, without explicitly requesting each address from a server. IETF RFC 7934 describes this multiple-address behavior.
DHCPv6 addresses have preferred and valid lifetimes. A client may request an extension, and it must stop using an address once its valid lifetime expires. DHCPv6 can also supply DNS and other configuration, while prefix delegation lets a network delegate a prefix to a client router or subscriber. These details mean that “static or dynamic” does not describe every IPv6 configuration as neatly as the basic IPv4 comparison suggests. The current DHCPv6 specification is IETF RFC 9915, published in January 2026.

How to decide which kind of assignment you need
- Identify which address matters. Determine whether the task needs a predictable address inside the local network or an externally reachable, stable address.
- Check how much stability the task actually needs. Many everyday clients work with automatically assigned addresses. A particular network service may need a predictable local address, while an external service may depend on ISP or administrator options.
- Use the network’s intended configuration method. If a fixed local address is needed, check whether the router or administrator supports a reservation before manually configuring the device. Follow the administrator’s policy and avoid assigning an address already in use.
- Account for IPv4 and IPv6. A setting for one protocol does not necessarily determine how the other is configured; devices and interfaces may have several IPv6 addresses with different roles and lifetimes.
Router features, operating-system settings, ISP offerings, and administrator policies differ, so there is no single set of consumer steps or universal recommendation. The practical choice is the least complicated setup that meets the actual network requirement.
