Use static analysis first when you need a safe, broad view of a binary’s structure and possible capabilities. Use dynamic analysis when you must see what the program actually does at runtime, including unpacking, decryption, file and registry changes, process activity, memory contents, or network traffic. For packed, obfuscated, or otherwise difficult samples, the most reliable approach is a controlled loop: static triage identifies what to watch, dynamic execution reveals behavior, and the captured runtime code is analyzed statically again.

What static and dynamic binary analysis mean

The distinction is whether the specimen executes during the examination.

Static binary analysis

Static analysis examines a binary as stored, without running it. An analyst can identify the file format and architecture, calculate hashes, inspect headers and sections, review imports and exports, extract strings, disassemble machine code, inspect control-flow relationships, decompile selected functions, and scan for recognizable byte or code patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This approach is useful for establishing what a file appears capable of doing. A suspicious import set may suggest process injection, persistence, cryptography, or network access. Strings can reveal command names, file paths, URLs, configuration keys, or error messages. Section sizes and entropy can indicate that code or data has been compressed or encrypted. Disassembly and decompilation can expose branches and routines that a short execution never reaches.

The Malware Attribute Enumeration and Characterization (MAEC) model treats static attributes and manually recovered code as information that can be recorded for a malware instance. MITRE CAPEC-190 also identifies file or binary analysis, debugging, disassembly, and decompilation as techniques for exposing hidden executable functionality. NIST describes static binary scanners as using disassembly and pattern recognition to identify vulnerabilities and unintended functionality.

Dynamic binary analysis

Dynamic analysis executes the binary in a controlled, instrumented environment and records what happens. That environment may be a malware sandbox, an isolated virtual machine, or a debugger-equipped laboratory system. Monitoring can include process creation and injection, file reads and writes, registry or configuration changes, native API and system-call activity, memory modifications, loaded modules, and network connections.

MAEC describes dynamic analysis as capturing actions exhibited by executing malicious code, from native API calls to higher-level behavior. NIST documents dynamic-analysis tooling for generating runtime vulnerability scenarios. The key advantage is direct evidence: an observed file write or outbound connection happened under the tested conditions, rather than being inferred from code.

Dynamic analysis is not a guarantee that every capability will appear. A run exercises only the paths reached by its inputs, timing, privileges, network responses, and other environmental conditions. A sample may wait, require a particular document or command-line argument, contact a server that is unavailable in the lab, or detect that it is being observed.

Static vs. dynamic analysis at a glance

Question Static analysis Dynamic analysis
Does the specimen execute? No; the file is inspected in its stored form. Yes; it runs in an isolated, instrumented environment.
Primary evidence Headers, sections, imports, strings, disassembly, decompiler output, control flow, and patterns. Observed processes, API or system calls, files, registry or configuration changes, memory, and network traffic.
Safety profile Safer for initial triage because execution is not required. Requires containment, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
Potential coverage Can map code and data that one run never reaches. Records only paths and conditions exercised during the run.
Effect of packing or encryption Interesting logic may be unreadable or misleading in the file as stored. Execution may reveal unpacked or decrypted code in memory.
What it can prove Potential capabilities and structural relationships. Concrete effects observed under specified conditions.
Setup File-analysis tools can provide a useful starting point. Needs a controlled VM or sandbox, instrumentation, and system and network monitoring.
Reproducibility Depends on correct parsing, disassembly, and interpretation. Depends on inputs, timing, environment, privileges, and triggered branches.

Which method should you choose?

Choose based on the question you need to answer, not on a preference for one tool category.

Choose static analysis when you need structure or broad triage

  • You need to identify the file type, architecture, compiler clues, or section layout before taking any action.
  • You want a quick assessment of imports, strings, hashes, embedded resources, or likely capabilities across many samples.
  • You need to map possible control-flow paths, including code that may require a rare trigger.
  • You are clustering samples, developing signatures or rules, or selecting functions for later debugging.
  • You cannot safely execute the specimen yet, or the available environment is not sufficiently isolated.

Static inspection is especially valuable at the start of an investigation because it can reveal what questions a runtime run should answer. It can also show that a file is not what its extension claims, uses an unexpected architecture, or contains a large high-entropy region that warrants unpacking analysis.

Choose dynamic analysis when you need observed effects

  • You need to know which processes, files, registry keys, configuration stores, APIs, or system calls are actually touched.
  • You suspect the file decrypts or unpacks its main logic only after launch.
  • You need concrete network indicators such as DNS lookups, connection attempts, protocol exchanges, or transferred data.
  • You are validating whether a suspected capability is reachable with a particular input, privilege, or timing condition.
  • Static output is dominated by obfuscation and you need a runtime memory image or unpacked module to continue.

Dynamic evidence should always be tied to the exact run conditions. State the input file, command line, user context, network emulation or connectivity, observation window, and any events that were not exercised.

Use both when the sample is difficult or the decision matters

Static and dynamic methods answer different parts of the same investigation. Static analysis can identify likely entry points, suspicious imports, configuration parsers, anti-analysis checks, and candidate network routines. Dynamic analysis can then confirm which of those routines execute and capture their arguments and effects. The resulting memory or unpacked image can be loaded into a disassembler or decompiler, where runtime observations help resolve indirect calls and prioritize the most relevant functions.

What static analysis can reveal—and where it stops

File identity and layout

Begin by preserving the original bytes and recording cryptographic hashes and file metadata. Confirm the container and executable format, machine architecture, subsystem, entry point, section names and permissions, imports and exports, resources, and overlay data. A mismatch between the extension and the parsed format is itself a useful indicator.

Strings, imports, and recognizable patterns

Readable strings can expose paths, commands, service names, mutexes, protocol labels, certificates, error text, or configuration keys. Imports and statically linked signatures can suggest use of process, file, registry, cryptographic, compression, or networking functionality. Pattern scanners and signatures can rapidly flag known code fragments, but a match is an indicator to investigate rather than proof of execution.

Disassembly, decompilation, and control flow

Disassembly shows instructions and their addresses; decompilation presents an approximate higher-level representation. Neither is automatically correct. Obfuscated control flow, indirect calls, packed sections, unusual compiler output, and data embedded in code can produce misleading functions. Validate boundaries and cross-references before drawing conclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Packing, encryption, and self-modification

Transformations can reduce static visibility. A packer may leave only a small loader and compressed payload in the file. Encrypted configuration or strings may appear as random bytes. Self-modifying code can change instructions after launch, so the stored image does not contain the final logic in a directly readable form. High entropy, a small import table, a stub-like entry point, and sections with unusual permissions are clues, not definitive proof of packing.

Static analysis therefore describes potential and structure. It cannot by itself prove that a branch will execute, that a string is used, or that an imported function is called during a particular run.

What dynamic analysis can reveal—and where it stops

Runtime artifacts

With appropriate monitors, a run can show process creation and termination, parent-child relationships, thread activity, module loads, file creation or deletion, registry and configuration changes, privilege use, API and system-call arguments, memory allocations, and network activity. These artifacts provide concrete indicators for detection and incident response.

Unpacked and decrypted code

A sample may decode its payload only after initialization. A debugger, memory scanner, or VM instrumentation can capture the resulting image or dump relevant regions for later static analysis. Record when and how the capture was made because addresses, protections, and contents can change during execution.

Coverage limits and environmental triggers

A clean run does not establish that unobserved behavior is absent. The sample may require a specific file, locale, date, user action, command-line switch, privilege, network response, or delayed timer. Repeat runs with deliberately varied conditions when the investigative question justifies it, and document which branches remain untested.

Anti-analysis behavior

Binaries may check for virtual-machine devices, debugger presence, timing anomalies, analysis tools, user inactivity, or sandbox artifacts. They may terminate, sleep, display harmless behavior, or postpone the meaningful action. Such behavior is itself an observation, but it also limits what can be concluded from that run.

A safe hybrid workflow

  1. Preserve the specimen. Work from a copy, retain the original bytes, and record hashes, file size, timestamps, claimed type, and acquisition context. Do not open a suspicious document or executable on a production system.
  2. Perform static triage. Identify the format and architecture; inspect headers, sections, permissions, imports, exports, resources, strings, hashes, and entropy. Note signs of packing, encryption, obfuscation, or self-modification.
  3. Write runtime questions. Convert suspicions into observable questions: Which child processes appear? Which files and registry keys change? Which APIs are called? Does the sample resolve a domain, open a socket, or inject into another process? Under what input or privilege?
  4. Prepare containment. Use an isolated VM or sandbox with controlled snapshots, restricted host access, and monitoring for processes, files, registry or configuration stores, memory, and network traffic. The CCDCOE malware-analysis handbook identifies disassemblers, debuggers, sandboxes, and system or network monitoring as core laboratory components.
  5. Execute deliberately. Launch only inside the controlled environment, using a documented command line, user context, input set, start time, and observation window. Capture logs, screenshots or traces where needed, packet data, and relevant memory.
  6. Preserve runtime artifacts. Save process trees, file and configuration diffs, API or system-call traces, DNS and connection records, dropped files, and memory or unpacked images. Keep timestamps and provenance with each artifact.
  7. Return to static reversing. Analyze captured modules or memory regions. Use observed addresses, arguments, strings, and call sequences to resolve indirect behavior and prioritize functions that matter to the case.
  8. Repeat and record limits. Vary only the conditions that answer a defined question. Document observed behavior, untested branches, blocked network actions, anti-analysis responses, and the exact environment so another analyst can interpret the result.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Running first because static output looks confusing

Confusing disassembly is a reason to improve triage, not to execute an unknown sample casually. Confirm architecture and format, inspect entry-point and section characteristics, and move execution into a purpose-built isolated environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating imports or strings as proof

An imported API or embedded URL may be unused, decoded only under a condition, or part of a library. Treat it as a lead. Confirm calls and effects through control-flow review or runtime traces.

Assuming a sandbox run covers the sample

Record the inputs and environment that were used. Add targeted triggers when needed, and state explicitly that a branch was not observed rather than claiming it does not exist.

Ignoring the host and network boundary

Dynamic analysis creates risk if the specimen can reach production systems, credentials, shared folders, or uncontrolled peers. Use snapshots, least privilege, isolated networking or tightly controlled simulation, and monitoring that can detect attempted escape or lateral activity.

Failing to preserve intermediate evidence

Keep the original sample, static reports, runtime logs, dropped files, packet captures, memory images, timestamps, and tool settings. Without provenance, later analysts cannot tell whether a result came from the original file, an unpacked image, or a modified test artifact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision guide for common investigations

What is this file and what might it contain? Static analysis Classify format, architecture, sections, imports, strings, and packing clues.
Did it create a file or alter configuration? Dynamic analysis Run in isolation with file and configuration monitoring, then inspect dropped artifacts statically.
Is the payload encrypted or packed? Static triage followed by dynamic analysis Identify the loader, capture unpacked memory, and reverse the captured image.
Which code paths may exist but were not triggered? Static analysis Map branches and conditions, then design runtime inputs for selected paths.
Does it contact a particular endpoint under a particular condition? Dynamic analysis guided by static indicators Monitor DNS and connections while supplying the relevant trigger; document blocked or untested conditions.
Can I safely classify many samples quickly? Static analysis Use hashes, metadata, imports, strings, and signatures to cluster and prioritize; dynamically test representative or high-risk samples.

How to report findings responsibly

Separate inferred capability from observed behavior. A static report should identify the evidence supporting a conclusion, such as a function, import, string, or control-flow relationship. A dynamic report should state the exact sample hash, environment, inputs, privileges, observation period, and artifacts seen. Include anti-analysis events, blocked actions, and branches that were not exercised.

MAEC’s model supports recording static and dynamic analyses separately for the same malware instance. That separation preserves an important distinction: a capability visible in code is not automatically an action that occurred, while an action observed in one run is not proof that every possible path behaves the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Can static analysis detect packed malware?

It can often detect clues such as unusual section entropy, a small import table, a loader-like entry point, or transformed code, but packing can conceal the payload’s meaningful logic. Static analysis may identify the packer or unpacking routine; dynamic execution can then expose the unpacked form for a second static pass.

Do I need a sandbox for every binary analysis task?

No. You can perform substantial static triage without executing the specimen. You do need a controlled, instrumented environment when the investigation requires runtime behavior, and that environment must be isolated and monitored before execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is dynamic analysis better than static analysis?

Dynamic analysis is better when the question concerns actual effects, runtime arguments, unpacked or decrypted content, or behavior that depends on a trigger. It is less complete when the trigger is unknown, anti-analysis checks interfere, or the run cannot reach all relevant branches.

What is the difference between static and dynamic malware analysis?

Static malware analysis inspects the sample without running it and infers structure and potential capability. Dynamic malware analysis runs it under observation and records the effects produced in that environment. A mature investigation uses both and labels the limits of each result.
