Yes—you can describe a task in ordinary language and have Apple Intelligence help create a Shortcut, if your iPhone and software support the feature. Otherwise, you can build the same kind of workflow by adding actions in the Shortcuts editor or starting with one from the Gallery. “Vibe-coding” is a handy informal description, not Apple’s name for the feature.
A Shortcut is a repeatable sequence of actions: each action performs one step. Start with something small you do repeatedly, inspect the actions, and run it to test it before relying on it.

How do I make my own iPhone Shortcuts with AI?
On an eligible setup, Apple Intelligence can help create or modify a Shortcut from a natural-language description. Think of your description as a request for a draft, not a guarantee that every task or app can be automated exactly as phrased. Review what it builds and test the result.

- Choose a small task. Pick a repeatable job involving actions your iPhone can perform—for example, a short sequence that passes information between apps.
- Describe the result you want. In Shortcuts, use the Apple Intelligence natural-language creation option when it is available. State what should happen and, where useful, the order of the steps.
- Inspect the actions. Check that the Shortcut uses the actions and inputs you intended. Change or remove steps that do not fit the task.
- Run it to test. Apple’s documented workflow includes testing a Shortcut by running it. Confirm the result before using it as part of a routine.
Apple documents Apple Intelligence in Shortcuts and the broader process of creating and editing custom shortcuts in its Shortcuts user guide.

Can I describe what I want my iPhone to do and turn it into a Shortcut?
Where natural-language creation is available, yes. Apple’s documentation presents it as an Apple Intelligence capability within Shortcuts. It is not a requirement for making shortcuts: the action editor remains the general route for assembling a workflow, and the Gallery offers ready-made shortcuts you can use or adapt.
If you do not see an AI creation option, you can still build a Shortcut manually. Open Shortcuts, choose to create a new shortcut, add actions in the editor, arrange them in the order you want, then run it. Apple’s guides cover creating a custom shortcut and finding shortcuts in the Gallery.

Choose the right way to build and run it
| Approach | What it does | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Action-by-action Shortcut | You add and arrange actions in the editor, then run the Shortcut yourself or launch it from a supported entry point. | Use this when you want direct control or Apple Intelligence creation is unavailable. |
| Natural-language creation | Apple Intelligence helps create or modify a Shortcut from a description on supported configurations. | Use this to draft a simple workflow, then inspect and test its actions. |
| Personal automation | An event triggers a Shortcut workflow rather than requiring you to start it manually. | Consider it after the Shortcut works on demand and a supported event would make it more useful. |
A Shortcut can be started manually in Shortcuts or through entry points such as Siri, a Home Screen icon, a widget, Apple Watch, or another app’s share sheet. An automation is different: it responds to a configured event. Apple explains these options in its introduction to shortcuts.
Turn a working Shortcut into an automation
Personal automations are useful when a listed event should start a workflow. Apple documents triggers including time of day, arrival, and NFC. The available triggers and whether they can run without confirmation depend on the trigger and its settings; individual actions may also have settings that affect automatic running.

- First run the Shortcut manually and confirm its actions work as intended.
- In Shortcuts, open the automation controls and create a personal automation for an event that matches your need.
- Choose the trigger, configure its conditions, and select the Shortcut or actions to run.
- Review any confirmation or automatic-running settings, including settings for actions in the workflow, then test the automation under the relevant conditions.
NFC is an optional trigger, not a prerequisite for ordinary Shortcuts. If you want to start an automation by scanning a tag, programmable NFC tags can be used for that purpose; Apple documents the NFC trigger setup. No tag is needed to create or run a regular Shortcut.
When should a Shortcut use an Apple Intelligence model?
Some workflows can include model-backed steps. Apple documents choices that include an on-device model, cloud-based models, and an extension model. The on-device option is described as suitable for straightforward requests; cloud options can handle more complex requests. That is a distinction in intended capability, not a promise that a particular request will work or that every option will appear on every iPhone.

Model-backed actions can use information passed in from earlier actions. Before adding one, decide what information the workflow needs to provide and whether that input belongs in the task. Apple’s guide to using Apple Intelligence models in Shortcuts describes the available choices and their use.

Apple’s current Shortcuts guide says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Availability also varies by language and region, and usage limits can apply. These requirements and feature availability can change; check Apple’s live Apple Intelligence in Shortcuts guidance and your iPhone’s current settings for the latest details.

If your device, language, region, or configuration is not eligible, the Gallery and action editor remain ways to make and use shortcuts. Apple Intelligence can assist with creation, but it is not what makes a Shortcut work: the workflow is still built from actions that you can inspect and run.
