If a Focus session will not start in the Windows 11 Clock app, try starting it from Settings or the taskbar first. If another route works, the problem may be limited to Clock; if none works, Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one specific cause, so work through the update and app-recovery steps below.
Try a different way to start Focus
Windows 11 lets you start a session from Settings, the taskbar, or Clock. Use one of these alternate paths to see whether the failure is specific to the Clock app:
- Settings: Open Settings > System > Focus, then select Start focus session.
- Taskbar: Open the taskbar clock or notification bell, or press Windows key + N. Choose a duration and select Focus.
- Clock: Open Focus sessions, choose a duration and whether to include breaks, then select Start focus session.
These start options are described in Microsoft’s Windows Focus guidance. If Settings or the taskbar starts the session, continue with the Clock-specific steps below. If every route fails, note any error message you see; the available Microsoft guidance does not establish a single cause for that symptom.

- Close the Clock app and open it again, then try starting a session.
- Check for Windows updates in Settings and install any available updates.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates to check for app updates. Retest Focus after updates finish.
These are general steps in Microsoft’s Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guidance; Microsoft does not describe them as a guaranteed Clock-specific fix.

Repair Clock, then reset it if necessary
Repair is the next lower-impact app-recovery step. In Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Clock, select its More menu, then choose Advanced options if that option appears.
- Select Repair, if available, and try starting a Focus session again.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same options and select Reset, if available. Then reopen Clock and test again.
Microsoft notes that not every app exposes Repair or Reset. Its Windows app repair and reset instructions describe these as options to use when available, not as guaranteed remedies.

Reinstall Clock only if the earlier steps fail or it is missing
Microsoft says Focus uses the Focus periods in Clock, and that Clock must be reinstalled if it has been uninstalled. If Clock is missing, or reopening, updating, Repair, and Reset have not resolved the problem, use Microsoft Store to reinstall it. For Store apps, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to Microsoft Store > Library for reinstalling. Open Clock after installation and try another session.

What a successful session should look like
When a Focus session starts, a timer appears. Do not disturb turns on automatically, and taskbar badges and flashing indicators are hidden by default while the session is active. Focus settings let you control session duration, whether the timer appears in Clock, whether taskbar badges and flashing are hidden, and whether Do not disturb is enabled. If Do not disturb was already on before the session, Microsoft says it remains on after the session ends.

Spotify audio and Microsoft To Do task selection are optional integrations, not requirements for starting a basic Focus session. If those integrations are unavailable, try starting a session without them. For the expected behavior and settings, see Microsoft’s Focus documentation.
