You can start a SaaS business with very little money, but you should not assume you can run one indefinitely at zero cost. Reduce spending until you have evidence that a specific customer will pay for a specific solution: test the problem, deliver the smallest useful version, and add paid infrastructure only when real use calls for it.
How do you start a SaaS business with no money?
Begin with a customer and a problem—not a feature list or a hosting plan. Stripe’s SaaS startup guide recommends identifying the intended customer, learning about their challenges, and asking what is missing from the products they already use. Stripe’s guide was last updated on April 8, 2025.
Talk to people who experience the problem. Ask how they handle it now, what makes that approach difficult, and what they have already tried. A compliment about your idea is not the same as evidence that someone needs it; look for concrete details about an existing workflow and a willingness to try a solution.

Test whether the proposed solution addresses a real task before investing in a complete product. The right experiment depends on what you are building and what skills you have:

- Have a conversation: Walk a potential customer through the problem and their current workaround.
- Show a simple demonstration: Use a mock-up or a short walkthrough to see whether the proposed workflow makes sense.
- Do the work manually: Deliver the outcome as a small, hands-on service before automating it. This can reveal which steps matter and which are unnecessary.
- Build a prototype: Let a potential user try the central interaction, without implementing a full product around it.
There is no universal interview count or conversion threshold that proves an idea will work. Treat each test as a way to find out what customers actually need, not as a guaranteed recipe for validation.
What should the first version include?
Build the smallest useful product that tests whether your solution creates value. Stripe’s guide puts the focus this way: “Start small. Build a minimum viable product (MVP) that does one or two things really well, gather feedback, and plan to expand in the future.” The guide recommends testing in small chunks and adjusting as feedback arrives.
Choose one central task the customer needs to complete and make that task work. Avoid spending early money on speculative scale or a long list of features. Add to the product when user feedback shows a clear need, rather than treating every possible feature as a launch requirement.

Which low-cost development path fits your skills?
| Path | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Code with managed services | A technical founder who wants control over implementation | You will need to understand service quotas, operations, and when usage or reliability requirements justify paid infrastructure. |
| No-code platform | A founder who would rather reduce implementation work than write the application code | Current plan prices and export or portability terms are not established here. Check them before relying on a platform for a product you may later need to move. |
| Manual or concierge test | A founder who wants to test a workflow before automating it | Deliver the outcome by hand to learn what customers need. This is a practical experiment, not a measured guarantee of success. |
For any managed service, compare its included quotas, project limits, overage behavior, backups, support, migration effort, and the point at which you would move to a paid plan. A free tier may reduce the cost of an experiment, but it does not remove the work of running a product.
Can you build a SaaS on a free tier?
Yes, a free tier can be useful for early development or a small test, but its limits matter. Supabase’s pricing page lists two free projects and, on its Free plan, 500 MB of database size per project, 50,000 monthly active users, 1 GB of storage, 500,000 edge function invocations, and 2 million realtime messages. Those are plan quotas, not a promise that a production business can operate at no cost.
Supabase documents that usage beyond included quotas can be billed on paid plans and that sustained quota overages can lead to restrictions. Its billing documentation also describes fixed subscriptions and variable usage charges on paid plans, with compute resources for each active project. Check the current plan terms before depending on a quota or choosing when to upgrade.
Are startup credits a substitute for a budget?
No. Credits can offset eligible infrastructure use for some companies, but they are conditional, time-limited, and not cash. Cloudflare’s Startup Program advertises up to $350,000 in credits across the program. Its entry Tier 3 offers $10,000 to bootstrapped or self-funded companies that have raised less than $1 million.
That entry tier has eligibility requirements: the company must meet program conditions covering age, active technology development, a public website and social presence, and a for-profit business email matching the company domain. Approval is at Cloudflare’s discretion. Credits cover eligible usage subject to exclusions and caps, require an account payment method, and last one year or until used; domain registration is excluded. Review the program terms before treating a credit offer as part of your plan.
Credits do not cover every expense a founder may face. A custom domain, payment processing, registration, email, backups, support, or production reliability can add costs, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal $0 launch setup.

When should you set up payments?
Set up payment collection once you can explain the offer clearly enough to test whether customers will pay for it. Stripe’s guide describes several SaaS pricing approaches; the model should reflect the value customers receive and how they use the product, rather than an assumption that one format is always best.
| Pricing approach | Possible fit |
|---|---|
| Monthly or annual subscription | Customers receive ongoing access or service over time. |
| Tiered pricing | Different customer groups need meaningfully different feature sets or usage allowances. |
| Usage-based pricing | The value or cost of providing the service changes with measurable use. |
| Flat-rate pricing | A simple, consistent offer is easier for customers to understand and for you to test. |
| Per-user pricing | The value or service delivered scales with the number of people using the product. |
| Freemium or hybrid pricing | A free entry point or a combination of pricing measures suits the product and customer journey. |
Stripe’s guide covers payment processing and subscription tools, but payment-provider availability and fees vary by location. Check the terms that apply where you and your customers are based before choosing a provider or setting prices.

What does the SaaS market size tell you?
Stripe’s guide attributes a global SaaS market estimate of $399.1 billion in 2024 to Grand View Research, and reports a 12% compound annual growth rate projection for 2025–2030 attributed there as well. These figures provide market context; they do not establish demand for a particular product, customer group, or idea.
