Starship and NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) are built for different transportation architectures, so their headline payload figures do not produce a fair one-number ranking. SLS is NASA’s launch vehicle for carrying Orion, astronauts, and exploration cargo toward the Moon; Starship refers to SpaceX’s spacecraft and Super Heavy booster together, a system designed for missions to orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Their clearest differences are what they are meant to carry, where they are meant to take it, and whether the launch system is designed to fly again.

What is the difference between Starship and SLS?

SLS is a NASA launch vehicle within the Artemis architecture. It launches Orion, which carries crew, along with exploration payloads toward the Moon. NASA describes SLS as a core crew-transportation capability for Artemis and as a system intended for lunar and deep-space missions. Its role is therefore comparatively specific: launch the crewed Orion spacecraft and mission cargo on trajectories beyond Earth orbit.

Starship is a larger system boundary than the name may first suggest. SpaceX uses “Starship” for the combination of the Starship spacecraft and the Super Heavy booster, rather than for the spacecraft alone. The company describes this combined system as designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. That is a broad transportation ambition, not evidence that each destination or operating mode is already routine.

The comparison is most useful when it separates system role, destination, and maturity. SLS has a defined role in NASA’s Artemis plans; Starship has an intended role spanning several destinations and mission types. Neither system’s published payload figure, by itself, says which is “more powerful” in every useful sense.

This system-boundary distinction matters whenever a comparison uses the word “rocket.” SLS is the launch vehicle discussed as part of a wider arrangement that includes the Orion crew spacecraft. SpaceX’s Starship figure, by contrast, refers to Starship together with its booster. Comparing SLS with only the Starship spacecraft, or comparing a complete SLS-and-Orion mission arrangement with one Starship component, can obscure what each published figure actually describes.

How do their published payload capabilities compare?

The organizations publish figures for different destinations and configurations. NASA’s SLS figures below describe payload delivered to the Moon; SpaceX’s headline Starship figure describes payload to Earth orbit in a fully reusable configuration. They are not like-for-like measurements, and none of these figures is presented here as an independently verified comparative result.

System and configuration Published payload figure What the figure means
SLS Block 1 More than 27 metric tons to the Moon NASA’s published figure for this configuration. NASA SLS overview
SLS Block 1B crew configuration Approximately 38 metric tons to the Moon NASA says this includes Orion and crew. Its page also describes up to a 10-metric-ton co-manifested payload; that is a distinct detail, not an additional amount to add to the approximately 38-ton total. NASA SLS Block 1B reference
SLS Block 1B cargo configuration Approximately 42 metric tons to the Moon NASA’s figure for the cargo arrangement, separate from the crew configuration. NASA SLS Block 1B reference
Starship, fully reusable configuration More than 100 metric tonnes to Earth orbit SpaceX’s company-published design figure for orbit, not a lunar-surface payload figure. SpaceX Starship

Destination changes the meaning of a payload number. A vehicle’s payload to Earth orbit is not interchangeable with its payload to the Moon: a lunar mission must account for the energy and trajectory needed to reach its destination, as well as the spacecraft and mission architecture. In particular, SpaceX’s stated orbit figure should not be read as the amount Starship can land on the lunar surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Starship lunar architecture described by SpaceX depends on refilling propellant in orbit and using a lunar lander configuration. That means a lunar mission involves more than sending a fully fueled vehicle directly from Earth to the surface. The source figures do not establish a matching Starship-to-the-Moon capacity under the same assumptions used for the SLS figures, so a precise payload winner cannot be derived from them.

The unit wording also deserves care: NASA’s SLS figures are stated in metric tons, while SpaceX’s figure is stated as metric tonnes. More important than the spelling difference is the destination and configuration attached to each number. A useful comparison should state all three items—vehicle version, destination, and whether the number is a company or agency design figure—rather than repeat a payload value without context.

The Block 1B crew and cargo entries are not two estimates of one identical flight. NASA gives approximately 38 metric tons for the crew configuration, including Orion and crew, and separately describes up to 10 metric tons of co-manifested payload. Its cargo configuration is approximately 42 metric tons to the Moon. Do not add the 10-ton co-manifested figure to the 38-ton figure or use the cargo value as if it were the crew configuration; NASA presents them as different arrangements.

Likewise, “100-plus tonnes to orbit” does not mean 100-plus tonnes to every destination. SpaceX’s number is specifically tied to Earth orbit and to a fully reusable design configuration. Its lunar architecture requires on-orbit propellant refilling and a lander configuration, so the orbit payload number alone does not answer how much cargo could be delivered to lunar orbit or the lunar surface. NASA and SpaceX do not provide matching figures under common assumptions in the cited descriptions.

What does NASA’s Block 1B status caveat mean?

NASA’s Block 1B reference page describes a future SLS configuration and publishes crew and cargo capabilities for it. However, NASA’s FY2026 budget technical supplement says the agency will terminate the Block 1B capability upgrade. That creates a distinction readers should preserve: the figures remain NASA-published design figures, but the supplement does not support treating Block 1B as an unqualified, current program commitment. See the NASA FY2026 budget technical supplement alongside the Block 1B reference page.

The budget statement is a program-planning caveat, not a reason to silently erase the published configuration specifications. When discussing SLS, distinguish the Block 1 capability figure from the Block 1B design figures, and make clear that Block 1B’s future status is affected by NASA’s budget document. The cited material does not establish the detailed operational consequences or a replacement configuration, so those should not be inferred from the termination statement alone.

In practical terms, a reader can use the Block 1B page to understand what NASA has published as a design capability, while the FY2026 supplement is needed to describe the program plan. These sources answer different questions: one gives configuration specifications, and the other supplies a budget and planning qualification. A page that still lists a future configuration should not, by itself, be taken as proof that the upgrade remains an active commitment after NASA’s budget statement.

This caveat also affects comparisons framed around future missions. Older plans that assume Block 1B will be available should not be presented as settled current commitments without newer NASA confirmation. The budget statement does not, on its own, specify all downstream mission changes, a substitute configuration, or the exact operational consequences. Avoid filling in those missing details by inference.

Which system is reusable?

SLS: an expendable launch architecture

NASA’s SLS overview describes a staged expendable launch vehicle. The stages are not presented as a system designed to return to Earth and fly again. SLS does draw on Space Shuttle engine heritage, but heritage is not the same as reuse: using designs or components descended from an earlier program does not mean recovering and reflying SLS stages.

That distinction separates technological ancestry from the operating model of the launch vehicle. A reused design or inherited engine technology does not make the stages themselves reusable. In the cited NASA overview, SLS is described as an expendable architecture, so its comparison point is the vehicle’s intended post-launch disposition, not whether some of its engineering has roots in an earlier program.

Starship: reuse is a design goal still being developed

SpaceX describes Starship and Super Heavy as a fully reusable transportation system and says the system is designed to return to the launch site and fly again rapidly. The distinction is important: a stated design objective describes what the system is intended to do, not necessarily what it has demonstrated in routine service.

SpaceX’s own Starship updates report test activity toward reuse, including propellant-transfer work. Those company-reported development steps indicate progress on parts of the architecture; they do not establish routine, rapid reuse of the complete system or an airline-like launch cadence. For a fair comparison, describe SLS as expendable and Starship as designed for full reuse, while keeping design intent separate from demonstrated operations. See NASA’s SLS overview, SpaceX’s Starship description, and SpaceX’s 2025 Starship report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reuse is often discussed as if it automatically establishes a lower cost or a particular flight rate. The cited descriptions do not provide a comparable operating cost, turnaround time, or routine cadence for the two vehicles. They support a narrower conclusion: SLS is described as expendable, while SpaceX’s stated design objective is full, rapid reuse and its updates report development work toward that objective. Do not convert that distinction into an unsupported cost-per-launch claim.

It is also useful to separate progress on one part of a system from operational maturity of the whole. Propellant-transfer testing is relevant to the planned Starship architecture, but it does not alone demonstrate regular reuse of both Starship and Super Heavy. SpaceX’s design language and development reports should be attributed as company statements, not treated as independent proof that all intended capabilities are already in routine operation.

What missions are the systems meant to support?

SLS and Orion in Artemis

NASA positions SLS as the launch element that sends Orion, its crew, and exploration payloads toward the Moon. Orion and SLS should therefore be understood as parts of a mission architecture, not as interchangeable vehicles. SLS supplies the launch capability; Orion is the crew spacecraft. NASA’s reference material also describes evolving configurations for lunar and deep-space missions, but its FY2026 budget supplement qualifies the planned Block 1B upgrade.

NASA’s Block 1B page calls SLS “the primary crew transportation to the Moon for the agency’s Artemis campaign.” That is NASA’s description of SLS’s program role, not a claim that SLS is a reusable general-purpose transportation service. The distinction helps explain why NASA’s lunar payload figures and SpaceX’s orbit figure answer different mission questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phrase “primary crew transportation” identifies how NASA positions SLS in the Artemis campaign. It does not make SLS and Orion the same spacecraft, nor does it establish that SLS is intended to perform every element of a lunar mission by itself. The NASA descriptions present SLS as the launch element and Orion as the crew vehicle, with exploration cargo also part of the launch role.

Starship’s wider stated remit

SpaceX describes Starship as a transportation system intended for Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The lunar role includes an on-orbit propellant-refilling architecture and a lander configuration. The Mars and beyond language describes the company’s broader design ambition; it should not be confused with a demonstrated operational capability or a committed agency program role.

The systems overlap most visibly at the Moon, but their roles are not identical. SLS is tied to NASA’s Orion-and-Artemis crew transportation plan, while Starship is designed as a broader system whose mission set includes lunar operations and destinations beyond the Moon. A comparison should identify whether it is about an agency’s near-term architecture, a company’s intended transportation system, or a specific payload and destination.

The difference is not simply “Moon versus Mars.” Both systems have lunar relevance, but the organizations describe them from different program perspectives. NASA emphasizes SLS’s role in sending Orion, crew, and exploration payloads toward the Moon for Artemis. SpaceX describes a broader transport system that includes orbit and lunar missions as well as its Mars ambition. That makes mission context as important as raw launch capability.

For lunar Starship missions in particular, the need for propellant refilling in orbit is a defining part of the published architecture. The lander configuration and refilling steps are not incidental details that can be omitted while using the Earth-orbit payload number to stand in for lunar performance. A reader asking about Moon delivery needs a destination-specific figure and the mission assumptions behind it; the cited company page does not supply a directly comparable lunar payload statistic.

How to make a fair Starship-versus-SLS comparison

  1. Define the system. Say whether “Starship” means the spacecraft alone or, as SpaceX uses it, the spacecraft and Super Heavy together. For SLS, distinguish the launch vehicle from Orion and the wider Artemis mission architecture.
  2. Name the configuration. Keep SLS Block 1 separate from the Block 1B crew and cargo configurations. State that the Block 1B numbers are published design figures and include NASA’s FY2026 budget caveat when discussing current program plans.
  3. Match the destination. Compare payload to Earth orbit with payload to Earth orbit, or lunar delivery with lunar delivery. The figures above do not supply a common destination for both systems.
  4. Separate design intent from demonstrated operations. SLS is described as expendable. Starship is designed for full reuse, and SpaceX reports tests toward that goal; that is not the same as routine reuse of the full system.
  5. Identify whose claim it is. NASA and SpaceX publish their own capability descriptions. Treat the figures as organization-published specifications rather than independent, like-for-like comparative measurements.

These steps prevent several common errors: treating Starship’s orbit figure as a lunar-surface delivery number; confusing the Starship spacecraft with the entire SpaceX system; mixing the SLS crew and cargo figures; and presenting Block 1B as a settled future commitment without the budget qualification. They also make clear why a single payload ranking would overstate what the published figures establish.

Which one is better for a particular comparison?

  • For a crewed Artemis launch role: SLS is the vehicle NASA identifies as part of the Orion and Artemis transportation architecture.
  • For an intended reusable system: Starship is designed for reuse, while SLS is described by NASA as expendable. Treat Starship’s reuse as a development goal rather than assume routine service.
  • For payload: compare the same destination and configuration. The available figures do not provide a shared destination and common assumptions for a direct ranking.
  • For future program plans: account for NASA’s FY2026 Block 1B termination statement rather than presenting older configuration plans as settled commitments.
  • For mission ambition: SLS’s role is more specifically connected to Artemis and Orion; Starship’s stated design scope reaches across orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

In short, the right question is not simply which rocket has the larger number. It is whether the reader means payload to orbit or the Moon, an expendable launch vehicle or a reusable system concept, a defined NASA mission role or a company’s broader design aims. On the evidence available from NASA and SpaceX’s published descriptions, Starship’s orbit payload figure cannot be directly set against SLS’s lunar payload figures to declare an overall winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Starship carry more payload than SLS?

There is no direct answer from the published figures alone. SpaceX states that Starship is designed for more than 100 metric tonnes to Earth orbit in a fully reusable configuration. NASA gives SLS figures to the Moon: more than 27 metric tons for Block 1, approximately 38 metric tons for the Block 1B crew configuration, and approximately 42 metric tons for Block 1B cargo. Because the destinations and configurations differ, these numbers do not support a like-for-like ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Starship already fully reusable?

SpaceX describes Starship and Super Heavy as designed for full, rapid reuse and reports test activity toward that objective, including propellant-transfer work. Those company-reported development steps should not be mistaken for proof of routine reuse of the complete system or an established rapid launch cadence.

Does Starship’s 100-plus-tonne figure mean it can land that much on the Moon?

No. SpaceX’s figure is for Earth orbit in a fully reusable design configuration. Its lunar architecture relies on in-space propellant refilling and a lander configuration, and the cited description does not provide a matching lunar-surface payload figure.

What is the difference between SLS Block 1 and Block 1B?

NASA publishes more than 27 metric tons to the Moon for Block 1. Its Block 1B reference page describes approximately 38 metric tons for a crew configuration, including Orion and crew, with up to a 10-metric-ton co-manifested payload, and approximately 42 metric tons for a separate cargo configuration. NASA’s FY2026 budget technical supplement says the Block 1B capability upgrade will be terminated, so these remain published design figures rather than an unqualified current program commitment.

Which vehicle is NASA’s Artemis crew launch system?

NASA identifies SLS as its primary crew transportation to the Moon for Artemis. SLS launches Orion, the crew spacecraft, along with exploration payloads; the two are elements of a mission architecture, not interchangeable vehicles.

Which system is designed to travel to Mars?

SpaceX describes Starship as designed for Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. That is the company’s stated design ambition, not evidence that Mars transportation is already an operational capability. NASA’s SLS role is more specifically connected to Orion and Artemis lunar and planned deep-space missions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: SLS is NASA’s expendable launch vehicle for the Orion-and-Artemis architecture; Starship is SpaceX’s spacecraft-and-booster system designed for broader destinations and full reuse. Their published payload figures describe different destinations and configurations, so they do not establish a simple winner. Treat Starship reuse as a design goal still under development, and read SLS Block 1B capability figures alongside NASA’s FY2026 budget statement that the upgrade will be terminated.
