Starship and NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) are not interchangeable rockets. In the Artemis architecture, SLS launches the Orion crew spacecraft from Earth toward the Moon. SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System (HLS) is being developed to carry astronauts from lunar orbit to the lunar surface and back. One is the Earth-departure vehicle; the other is a lunar lander.

That difference matters more than a simple height or thrust comparison. A meaningful assessment must include Orion, rendezvous and docking, lunar-surface operations, and the development status of each vehicle.

Starship and SLS at a glance

Question Starship HLS SLS and Orion
Primary Artemis role Lunar-orbit-to-surface transportation and return; a human lunar lander under development. Earth-departure launch vehicle for Orion and its crew on the journey toward the Moon.
What it must connect to Must rendezvous and dock with the crew vehicle in orbit before carrying astronauts to the surface. Launches Orion, the crew spacecraft that travels to lunar orbit and supports the crew before and after the lander segment.
Vehicle scope A specialized lunar Starship variant; properties of the broader Starship system should not automatically be applied to HLS. A family of configurations. Block 1B retains major Block 1 elements and adds an Exploration Upper Stage.
Named scale or performance figure NASA describes HLS as about 50 meters tall. NASA reports 8.8 million pounds of combined liftoff thrust for the Block 1B crew configuration.
Development snapshot in 2026 updates NASA and SpaceX were still conducting development testing, including wind-tunnel work on a Super Heavy Version 3 model. NASA reported Artemis III hardware integration, including Orion module work and delivery of all four RS-25 engines.

The figures in the table are not an apples-to-apples performance test. A vehicle height and a launch-thrust figure describe different properties, and neither establishes which system is “better.”

Why the two vehicles are not direct substitutes

Think of an Artemis lunar mission as a chain of transport legs rather than a single rocket flight. SLS handles the first major leg: it sends Orion and its crew away from Earth. After the spacecraft reaches the required trajectory, Orion remains the crew’s primary spacecraft for the trip to lunar orbit.

Starship HLS handles a different leg. The lander is expected to meet the crew vehicle in orbit, take astronauts down to the lunar surface, support surface operations, and return them to lunar orbit. The crew then transfers back to Orion for the trip home. A lander cannot replace the Earth-launch function of SLS, and SLS by itself does not provide the lunar surface landing function assigned to HLS.

This division also means that a mission can fail even when its launch vehicle performs correctly. A successful SLS launch still requires Orion systems, navigation, communications, rendezvous, docking, a functioning lander, lunar ascent, and mission control. Conversely, an operational HLS cannot deliver astronauts to the mission unless a crew spacecraft first reaches lunar orbit.

How the Artemis transportation sequence fits together

  1. Earth launch: SLS launches Orion and its crew from Earth toward the Moon. NASA describes SLS as the primary crew transportation vehicle for the Artemis campaign.
  2. Outbound flight: Orion remains the crew spacecraft during the outbound journey and while the crew prepares for the lander transfer.
  3. Rendezvous and docking: The crew vehicle must meet the commercial lunar lander in orbit and dock with it. This is a separate operation from the SLS launch.
  4. Descent to the surface: Astronauts transfer to Starship HLS, which is designed for the lunar-orbit-to-surface leg.
  5. Lunar operations and ascent: HLS supports the surface mission and then carries the astronauts back to lunar orbit.
  6. Return in Orion: The crew transfers back to Orion for the journey away from the Moon and the eventual return to Earth.

The exact Artemis mission profile can change as NASA evaluates hardware and schedules. The sequence above explains the intended division of responsibilities, not a guarantee that every mission will use an identical flight plan.

What Starship HLS is—and what it is not

A lunar-specific Starship variant

Starship HLS is a purpose-built lunar lander variant, not simply the standard Starship vehicle with a new destination. NASA describes HLS as a lander under development. The vehicle’s design, systems and mission constraints must therefore be assessed in the context of lunar descent, surface operations and ascent.

Specifications reported for the broader Starship program should not be treated as HLS specifications unless NASA or SpaceX explicitly applies them to the lunar vehicle. The same caution applies to photographs, test articles and booster configurations: a component tested for one part of the Starship system is not automatically evidence that the complete HLS mission is ready.

Scale: about 50 meters

NASA describes Starship HLS as approximately 50 meters tall, comparing that height with an Olympic swimming pool. This is a useful way to understand the vehicle’s physical scale, but height alone does not tell you payload capability, propellant capacity, landing performance or readiness for a crewed mission.

Super Heavy Version 3 testing

In an article dated July 31, 2026, NASA reported wind-tunnel testing of a 1.2% scale model of Super Heavy Version 3. The work was intended to improve understanding of aerodynamic forces during re-entry. Because the article concerns a scale model and aerodynamic development, it should not be read as a completed operational demonstration of Starship HLS.

The test-model percentage is a scale description, not a claim that the full vehicle had flown or that the lunar lander had completed its required mission. It is evidence of continuing development activity.

What SLS and Orion do

SLS is the Earth-departure system

SLS is the launch vehicle that places Orion and its crew on the trajectory for an Artemis lunar mission. NASA’s SLS Block 1B reference page calls it “the primary crew transportation to the Moon for the agency’s Artemis campaign.” In this role, SLS is responsible for the powerful departure from Earth and for delivering the crew spacecraft to the mission’s outbound path.

Orion is not a payload that disappears after launch. It is the crew spacecraft for the lunar journey, including the time before and after the lander operation. Treating “SLS” as shorthand for the entire mission hides the work performed by Orion and by the systems that enable docking and crew transfer.

Block 1 and Block 1B are different configurations

SLS is a family rather than one unchanging vehicle. Block 1B adds an Exploration Upper Stage to the Block 1 architecture while retaining major Block 1 elements. Any performance or hardware statement should identify the block and mission configuration behind it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NASA reports 8.8 million pounds of combined liftoff thrust for the Block 1B crew configuration. That number is tied specifically to the Block 1B crew vehicle; it should not be copied to every SLS flight or treated as the thrust of Orion itself.

2026 hardware progress

NASA’s August 5, 2026 update reported Orion module integration activity and delivery of all four RS-25 engines for Artemis III. This is a dated hardware-progress snapshot. It indicates work on the SLS-and-Orion side of the architecture, but it does not by itself establish a launch date or prove that every Artemis element is ready.

Comparing size and performance without misleading yourself

Metric Vehicle and configuration What the figure tells you What it does not tell you
About 50 meters tall Starship HLS, according to NASA’s HLS description. Approximate physical height of the lunar lander. It does not specify payload, propellant load, landing accuracy, mission duration or flight readiness.
8.8 million pounds of combined liftoff thrust SLS Block 1B crew configuration, according to NASA. The combined thrust available at liftoff for that SLS configuration. It does not describe HLS, Orion performance, lunar landing capability or total mission success.
1.2% scale model Super Heavy Version 3 wind-tunnel model tested in NASA’s July 31, 2026 report. The geometric scale of the model used for aerodynamic testing. It is not a full-scale vehicle measurement and is not evidence of operational readiness.

These numbers answer different engineering questions. Liftoff thrust is relevant to leaving Earth; lander height is a dimensional property; a wind-tunnel scale is a test condition. Ranking the systems by placing these figures in one column would create a false comparison.

Mission dependencies that a rocket-only comparison misses

Rendezvous and docking

For an HLS mission, the lander must meet the crew vehicle in orbit and establish a safe connection before astronauts transfer. That adds navigation, communications, structural, life-support and crew-procedure requirements that are not captured by a rocket’s thrust or height.

Two vehicles, one crew

The crew depends on both Orion and HLS. Orion must support the outbound and return portions of the journey, while HLS must support the descent, surface stay and ascent. A comparison that asks which vehicle is “more capable” without naming the mission segment is asking the wrong question.

Surface operations

A lunar lander needs systems for controlled descent, touchdown, surface power and thermal management, crew access, communications and ascent. Available figures do not establish a complete specification for those systems, so no responsible comparison can claim a definitive HLS surface-payload or stay-time advantage from the available figures.

What NASA’s 2026 Artemis planning says about the schedule

NASA’s preliminary Artemis III planning described in May 2026 involved a crewed Earth-orbit mission intended to test rendezvous and docking between Orion and commercial lander test articles, including a Starship HLS pathfinder. NASA said an Earth-orbit profile would offer more launch opportunities for the mission elements than a lunar mission profile.

That description was a preliminary plan, not a guarantee of the eventual Artemis III flight plan. Mission concepts can change as testing, certification and hardware integration progress. It is therefore more accurate to say that NASA was evaluating an Earth-orbit demonstration approach than to present it as the settled architecture for every Artemis III milestone.

The July 31, 2026 wind-tunnel report and the August 5, 2026 Orion and RS-25 update show development activity on both sides of the architecture. Neither update establishes that a crewed HLS landing has occurred, that an operational Starship HLS is certified, or that a specific launch date is fixed.

Which system is “better” depends on the question

If you are asking… The relevant system is… Why
What launches astronauts from Earth toward the Moon? SLS with Orion. That is SLS’s assigned Artemis transportation role.
What carries astronauts between lunar orbit and the surface? Starship HLS, if development and mission certification are completed. HLS is being developed as the lunar lander for that segment.
Which vehicle has more liftoff thrust? SLS Block 1B has the cited 8.8-million-pound figure. The figure applies to the Block 1B crew configuration, not to a direct HLS comparison.
Which vehicle is taller? NASA describes HLS as about 50 meters tall; a directly comparable SLS height is not established in the cited material. Comparing unlike or unspecified measurements would be misleading.
Which program is ready for a crewed lunar landing? No conclusion follows from the cited figures alone. Readiness requires integrated tests, certification and mission evidence, not a single headline metric.

Common misconceptions

“Starship replaces SLS.”

Not in the Artemis division described by NASA. Starship HLS is the lunar lander segment, while SLS launches Orion and its crew from Earth. Replacing one would require redesigning the full transportation architecture, not merely selecting a different rocket.

“The tallest vehicle is the most capable.”

Height is not a proxy for lunar-landing performance. A lander’s value depends on its ability to rendezvous, descend, operate on the surface and ascend safely. NASA’s approximately 50-meter HLS figure establishes scale, not superiority.

“The largest thrust number wins.”

Thrust is critical during Earth launch, which is why the SLS Block 1B number is meaningful for its role. It does not measure a lander’s surface systems or the complete Artemis mission. A larger liftoff figure cannot answer a lunar-lander question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A booster test proves the HLS mission is ready.”

The 2026 Super Heavy Version 3 wind-tunnel test examined aerodynamic forces using a 1.2% model. It is valuable development work, but it is not a completed, full-scale, crewed lunar mission demonstration.

How to evaluate future Starship-versus-SLS claims

  • Identify the exact vehicle: Starship HLS, another Starship configuration, SLS Block 1 or SLS Block 1B.
  • Identify the mission segment: Earth launch, lunar transfer, orbital rendezvous, descent, surface operations or ascent.
  • Check whether a number is a specification, a test-model scale, a laboratory result or a completed flight milestone.
  • Carry the configuration and date with every figure. The 8.8-million-pound value belongs to the SLS Block 1B crew configuration, while the 50-meter value describes HLS.
  • Separate a preliminary plan from an approved mission profile. NASA’s May 2026 Artemis III Earth-orbit concept was explicitly preliminary.
  • Look for integrated evidence involving Orion, docking, the lander and mission operations rather than judging the rocket in isolation.

Bottom line

Starship HLS and SLS solve different transportation problems in Artemis. SLS is the Earth-launch vehicle for Orion and its crew; Starship HLS is the developing lander intended to move astronauts between lunar orbit and the Moon’s surface. The systems must work together within a larger architecture, so height, thrust or a single test cannot establish an overall winner. The most accurate comparison is by mission role, configuration and demonstrated readiness.
