Magnetars can produce fast radio bursts, but observations have not shown that a starquake triggered one. A burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is strong evidence for a magnetar connection; linking that burst specifically to a quake inside the star remains a hypothesis.
What are starquakes?
A neutron star is the compact remnant left when a massive star collapses. A magnetar is a neutron star with an exceptionally strong magnetic field. In a starquake model, a sudden rearrangement in the crust or interior changes the star’s rotation or disturbs its surrounding magnetic environment. Those disturbances could, in principle, help produce radio emission.
A starquake is not the same thing as a pulsar glitch. A glitch is an observed, abrupt change in a neutron star’s rotation. A quake is one proposed physical explanation for how such a change might happen; the observation of a glitch alone does not identify its cause.

Can starquakes cause fast radio bursts?
They could be part of a possible explanation, but the evidence does not establish that they cause fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs are brief, powerful radio transients; the bursts discussed here last milliseconds. The central distinction is between evidence that a magnetar can emit an FRB and evidence for the particular process that triggers it. The former exists; the latter remains unsettled.

What FRB 200428 showed
On 28 April 2020, researchers detected a burst designated FRB 200428 from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154, alongside an X-ray burst. Bochenek and colleagues reported the event in Nature in 2020. They described the radio burst’s isotropic-equivalent energy as 4 × 10³ times that of any Crab pulsar radio pulse previously observed on similar timescales.
The radio and X-ray observations support the conclusion that active magnetars can produce FRBs. Their coincidence also favors models in which magnetar bursts or giant flares power the radio emission. It does not reveal whether a quake occurred, or prove that one caused the radio burst.

What later glitches add—and what they do not
A study reported two spin-up glitches in SGR 1935+2154 bracketing an FRB observed in October 2022. The authors discussed possible coupling between the star’s crust, its magnetosphere, changes in spin, and radio emission, while stating that the FRB-generation mechanism remains unclear. The timing is suggestive of a relationship, not proof of a causal chain from quake to glitch to burst.
There was also a separate, large spin-down glitch reported around 5 October 2020 (±1 day) by Younes and colleagues in Nature Astronomy in 2023. That is a different event from the October 2022 spin-up glitches; the two should not be treated as one sequence or as proof of an FRB trigger.

Are fast radio bursts caused by magnetars?
The observations support magnetars as sources of at least some FRBs, not as the established source of every FRB. FRB 200428 is a direct example of a Galactic magnetar producing a burst with FRB-like properties. It does not show that all FRBs share that origin, nor that every burst from a magnetar produces a detectable radio signal.
For example, a separate observing campaign reported no pulsed radio emission coincident with the SGR bursts it observed. The campaign was not observing when FRB 200428 occurred, and its authors suggested that associations between FRBs and SGR bursts may be rare. A non-detection during those sessions therefore does not contradict the 2020 detection; it does caution against assuming that every magnetar burst has a radio counterpart.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us
| Claim | What was observed or reported | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| A magnetar emitted an FRB-like burst | FRB 200428 was detected from SGR 1935+2154 alongside an X-ray burst on 28 April 2020. | Active magnetars can produce FRBs. |
| Glitches and an FRB may be related | Two spin-up glitches were reported around an October 2022 FRB from the same magnetar. | A possible connection among spin changes, the crust, magnetosphere, and radio emission merits consideration; the mechanism is not established. |
| Every magnetar burst produces an FRB | A separate campaign found no coincident pulsed radio emission during its observed SGR bursts. | The association is not shown to be routine; that campaign did not observe FRB 200428. |
| A starquake triggered FRB 200428 | The reported radio and X-ray coincidence does not establish a quake as the trigger. | This remains a proposed explanation, not a demonstrated cause. |
So the starquake idea is plausible as a model for how activity inside or around a neutron star might disturb its rotation or magnetic environment. But the observations described here do not isolate a starquake as the cause of an FRB. The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: at least one active magnetar produced an FRB-like burst, while the trigger and the broader range of FRB origins remain unresolved.
