There is no universal winner among Starlink, Viasat and Panasonic Avionics for airline Wi‑Fi. They are not equivalent products: Starlink sells an aviation connectivity service, Viasat operates satellite communications and an aviation business, and Panasonic Avionics integrates a network that can combine geostationary (GEO) satellites, low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites and 5G. Your airline’s installed equipment, aircraft assignment, route, network load, login rules and price determine the connection you actually get.
How does Starlink compare with Viasat and Panasonic Avionics for in-flight Wi-Fi?
The names describe different layers of the aviation-connectivity system. Starlink is a service that an airline can install on compatible aircraft. Viasat is a satellite communications company with an aviation business; its acquisition of Inmarsat closed in May 2023. Panasonic Avionics is an in-flight-connectivity integrator that describes a multi-source network rather than one fixed satellite constellation.
That distinction matters because a provider announcement does not guarantee one experience across every aircraft in an airline’s fleet. Two aircraft on the same route can have different antennas, software, capacity allocations or passenger-access policies. A fleetwide announcement can also cover only selected aircraft while installation continues.

Starlink: an aviation service, not a published speed guarantee
Starlink’s aviation page presents connectivity for aircraft ranging from supersonic aircraft to helicopters and vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) vehicles, and says the service has delivered connectivity across flights. Those are vendor service claims. The available material does not provide a comparable official numeric speed or latency specification for airline passengers, so it would be misleading to place a Starlink speed number beside Panasonic’s aircraft-level figures.

Viasat: a satellite communications provider with airline deployments
Viasat supplies satellite communications and aviation connectivity. Its 2024 passenger survey is useful for understanding what travelers want from onboard Wi‑Fi, but the survey is not a network benchmark. The material available here does not state a current Viasat performance figure that can be compared directly with Panasonic’s published capacity or flight-test peaks. Do not infer a typical seat speed from the survey or from the company’s ownership of a satellite network.
Panasonic Avionics: a multi-orbit and 5G integration model
Panasonic says its network combines GEO and LEO satellites with an available global 5G network. Its current network description says the LEO component can reduce latency from approximately 700 milliseconds to approximately 100 milliseconds, dynamically allocates capacity and supports gate-to-gate access. It lists up to 195 Mbps downstream and 32 Mbps upstream per aircraft.
In an April 3, 2025 announcement, Panasonic described tests that switched between LEO and GEO over Arctic and equatorial routes. The program included passenger web and media use, video streaming and video conferencing. Panasonic reported forward-link speeds up to 193 Mbps and return-link speeds of 36 Mbps during those tests. These are vendor-reported flight-test results, not an independent benchmark or a promise of that speed to an individual seat.

“Not stated” means that the available source material does not provide a figure suitable for this comparison; it does not mean that a service has no capability.
Which airline Wi-Fi is faster?
There is no defensible three-way speed ranking from the published figures available here. Panasonic is the only one of the three with both a current aircraft-level capacity statement and a dated flight-test result in this material. Starlink’s aviation page does not supply a comparable number, and the Viasat material is a passenger survey rather than a technical specification.
What Panasonic’s numbers actually measure
- Up to 195 Mbps down and 32 Mbps up: Panasonic’s current network page describes these as per-aircraft capacity figures. They are shared by all connected passengers and operational systems on that aircraft.
- 193 Mbps forward and 36 Mbps return: Panasonic reported these peaks from its April 3, 2025 flight-test program. The test covered network switching between LEO and GEO and included web, media, streaming and conferencing scenarios.
- Neither figure is a seat guarantee: A passenger’s result depends on the number of simultaneous users, traffic shaping, antenna conditions, route, satellite visibility, onboard networking and the airline’s access policy.
John Wade, Panasonic Avionics’ vice president of connectivity, said: “The successful optimization of our multi-orbit network is a major milestone and one which demonstrates its readiness for commercial use.” That is a company statement about Panasonic’s test and deployment readiness, not an independent certification of passenger speeds.

Why an aircraft figure cannot be converted into a seat figure
Suppose an aircraft has a shared 195 Mbps downstream allocation. That bandwidth is not reserved equally for every passenger. A few passengers running video calls, cloud backups or high-bitrate streams can consume far more capacity than travelers checking messages. Network equipment may also reserve capacity for crew operations, airline applications and safety-related traffic. The airline can impose per-device limits or prioritize certain applications.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For that reason, a lower advertised aircraft capacity can feel faster on a lightly loaded flight than a higher capacity on a full aircraft with heavy streaming. A meaningful seat-level comparison would require synchronized tests on the same routes, aircraft loads, devices, applications and times. No independent test spanning all three services is available in the material for this article.
Latency and responsiveness: what passengers notice
Latency is the delay before a request begins to receive a response. It affects interactive actions such as opening a web page, joining a video meeting, using a remote desktop or playing a turn-based game. Throughput affects how quickly a large download or video stream transfers once the connection is established.
Panasonic says its LEO component can reduce latency from approximately 700 ms to approximately 100 ms. The statement describes the difference between the network paths in Panasonic’s architecture; it is not a promise that every passenger will measure exactly 100 ms. GEO, LEO and 5G paths can have different conditions, and Panasonic’s system may switch between them.
No comparable official latency figure is stated in the available Starlink or Viasat material. It is therefore reasonable to discuss Panasonic’s stated latency target, but not to declare Starlink or Viasat definitively faster or slower on latency without matched measurements.
Coverage, routes and gate-to-gate availability
Route and satellite visibility
Aircraft connectivity depends on where the aircraft is flying and which network the installed terminal can use. Polar, equatorial, oceanic and continental segments can present different satellite visibility, handoff and capacity conditions. Panasonic’s April 2025 test specifically included Arctic and equatorial scenarios and switching between LEO and GEO, demonstrating the kinds of conditions an integrated network is designed to handle. A test result does not mean every aircraft or route has that configuration.

Starlink’s aviation service is presented for a wide range of aircraft types, but the provider page alone does not establish that a particular airline, aircraft tail number or route has the service. Viasat availability likewise depends on an airline’s installed system and coverage arrangement.
What “gate to gate” means
Gate-to-gate Wi‑Fi means the airline intends to make connectivity available while the aircraft is at the gate, during taxi, in flight and after landing, subject to local regulations, aircraft procedures and network coverage. It does not mean that a device will remain continuously connected through every transition. The radio may be disabled during safety-critical phases, the aircraft may change networks, or the airline may require a fresh login after landing.
Panasonic describes gate-to-gate access using its satellite and 5G sources. The practical availability still depends on the airline enabling the feature on that aircraft and on the terms shown in the onboard portal.

Wi‑Fi quality includes the time and effort required to connect, not just radio performance. Airlines can make access free, charge for a full flight or a time period, limit free messaging, require a loyalty account, or sell separate plans for browsing and streaming. The same onboard system can therefore feel different under two airline contracts.
Panasonic Passpoint roaming
In an April 8, 2025 announcement, Panasonic described Passpoint roaming that uses mobile-SIM or app credentials. Payment is routed through the passenger’s mobile provider. The initial rollout was expected on selected Korean Air aircraft; it was not declared universal across Panasonic-equipped fleets. Treat it as an example of a possible authentication method, not as a feature every Panasonic passenger can use.
John Wade said: “At Panasonic Avionics, our goal is to take the friction out of in-flight Wi-Fi, and let passengers walk on to an aircraft and immediately be connected.” The statement describes the company’s goal. Whether you receive automatic authentication depends on your carrier, mobile provider, aircraft and enrollment.

What the Viasat passenger survey says about expectations
Viasat’s December 10, 2024 Passenger Experience Survey gathered views from more than 11,000 people worldwide who had traveled by air in the previous 12 months. These are survey findings from Viasat, not universal passenger statistics:
- 75% said quality in-flight Wi‑Fi would make them more likely to select or rebook with an airline.
- 22% said they would not consider a long-haul route without connectivity.
- 36% identified free or low-cost access as an important consideration.
- 87% said they would watch advertisements in exchange for free Wi‑Fi.
- 71% selected access to their own streaming platforms as a connectivity-enabled service of interest.
- Among respondents on flights with seatback entertainment, 94% still wanted to use personal devices.
Viasat’s Don Buchman, vice president and general manager of commercial aviation, said: “This report is a glimpse into the future of connected air travel, where low cost, high quality connectivity is increasingly non-negotiable,” The quotation reflects Viasat’s interpretation of its survey; it is not a performance comparison with Starlink or Panasonic.
Can I stream on airplane Wi-Fi?
Streaming may work, but neither a provider label nor an aircraft-level peak proves that your flight will support it. Video quality, simultaneous users and airline policy are decisive.
Check these conditions before relying on streaming
- Look for an explicit streaming tier: Some airlines separate basic browsing from a faster or paid plan that permits video.
- Confirm the service is enabled on your aircraft: Fleet announcements do not guarantee that every tail number has been upgraded.
- Download offline backups: Save work files, documents, music and shows before departure if uninterrupted access matters.
- Expect variable quality: A stream can start successfully and later buffer when more passengers connect or the aircraft changes network paths.
- Use moderate quality when necessary: Lower resolution reduces demand and is more likely to remain stable on a congested connection.
- Respect airline rules: Voice and video calls may be restricted even when ordinary streaming is allowed.
Because Panasonic’s published figures are shared aircraft capacity, they cannot establish that every passenger can stream simultaneously. Starlink and Viasat require the same caution: the installed terminal, airline policy and real-time load matter more than the brand printed in a press release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Starlink Wi-Fi available on my flight?
The provider name alone cannot answer this. Use the airline’s flight-specific information and verify the aircraft when possible.
- Open the airline’s Wi‑Fi or connectivity page. Search by flight number, route or aircraft type if the airline offers those fields.
- Check the aircraft assignment. Look for a note that the service is available only on selected aircraft, newly refurbished aircraft or particular cabins.
- Read the access terms and price. Confirm whether messaging is free, whether streaming requires payment, and whether a loyalty login is required.
- Check the route caveat. Oceanic, polar or international segments can have different coverage and regulatory restrictions.
- Ask at the gate if connectivity is essential. Aircraft swaps can change the installed system after you have booked.
- Plan for a failure. Keep offline copies of critical files and do not schedule a meeting that has no workable backup.
If the airline does not identify the system for your specific flight, treat availability as unconfirmed. A provider’s announcement about a fleet or program is not proof that your assigned aircraft is equipped.

Installation and airline deployment determine the real experience
Airlines choose the antenna, modem, cabin network, portal, pricing and support model. Installation can occur aircraft by aircraft, and a mixed fleet can carry several systems at once. Certification, maintenance windows, route economics and satellite coverage all influence the rollout.
Panasonic’s multi-orbit design can offer path diversity, but it also introduces switching and integration decisions. A carrier may enable GEO, LEO and 5G differently by route or aircraft. Starlink’s aviation service similarly requires compatible aircraft equipment and an airline deployment; the existence of the service does not show that a particular airline has installed it. Viasat’s aviation operation is also experienced through the hardware and contract selected by the carrier.
A practical decision framework for travelers
| Your priority | What to verify | Why the provider name is insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable work or video meetings | Aircraft-specific availability, expected coverage, access terms and a backup plan | Latency and capacity change with route, load and network handoffs |
| Video streaming | Whether the airline permits streaming, which plan enables it and whether content is available offline | Aircraft-level Mbps is shared and is not a seat guarantee |
| Lowest cost | Free messaging rules, loyalty benefits, advertising-supported access and paid-plan duration | Commercial terms are set by the airline, not uniformly by the satellite provider |
| Fastest connection | Current aircraft assignment and any airline-published performance or service tier | No independent, matched three-way speed test is available here |
| Easy sign-in | Whether the airline supports automatic Passpoint or account-based authentication | Panasonic’s Passpoint rollout was announced for selected Korean Air aircraft, not all fleets |
What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
The published information supports a clear architectural distinction and a cautious reading of the numbers. Panasonic documents a GEO/LEO/5G approach, a stated latency reduction, aircraft-level capacity and a vendor flight-test program. Starlink documents the scope of its aviation service but not a comparable numeric specification in the material used here. Viasat provides useful passenger-demand statistics, while a current technical figure suitable for a direct comparison is not stated.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
There is no independent test covering Starlink, Viasat and Panasonic under the same conditions. Informal passenger reports cannot correct that gap because aircraft, routes, devices and network loads differ. A claim that one brand is always fastest, has the lowest latency or works on every route would go beyond the evidence.
The bottom line for booking and boarding
Choose based on the airline, flight and aircraft—not the provider logo alone. Panasonic is the only service in this comparison with published aircraft-level capacity and a dated multi-orbit flight-test result, but those figures are not individual-seat guarantees. Starlink’s aviation service may be excellent where an airline has installed it, yet the available material does not supply a comparable official speed number. Viasat remains a major aviation connectivity provider, but its passenger survey should be read as evidence of traveler expectations, not proof of network performance.
Before departure, verify the specific aircraft’s Wi‑Fi, route coverage, gate-to-gate policy, authentication method, streaming rules and price. If connectivity is mission-critical, carry offline work and a backup communications plan regardless of which name appears in the airline’s announcement.
