As of 13 October 2026, Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications are identified by India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as GMPCS-authorized operators, but that does not mean any of them has an orderable household internet service. Reporting published on 2 October 2026 said spectrum assignment and final clearances were still prerequisites for customer service. No confirmed Indian household prices, consumer order channels or provider plan terms are established in the sources available for this comparison.

Is Starlink available in India?

Not as a confirmed, orderable household service on the evidence available as of 13 October 2026. Starlink appears on the DoT’s list of Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) licensees, and a Ministry of Communications parliamentary reply dated 29 January 2026 confirms the authorization. But a GMPCS authorization is not a consumer launch, and does not itself grant spectrum-use rights. The Economic Times reported on 2 October 2026 that spectrum and final clearances were still needed before Starlink, OneWeb and Jio could offer service to customers.

That distinction matters for anyone comparing equipment or prices. An announcement, license, application, waitlist or service in another country is not proof that an Indian household can place an order and receive a supported connection. Confirm service at the exact Indian address and an official purchase path before paying for a terminal or installation.

Starlink vs. OneWeb and Jio: what is confirmed?

Provider What official sources establish What a household buyer can conclude
Starlink Listed by DoT among GMPCS-authorized licensees in its snapshot dated 10 June 2025; the January 2026 parliamentary reply confirms authorization. Authorization is established, but those records do not establish household ordering, an India plan or a price. October 2026 reporting said spectrum and final clearances remained outstanding.
Eutelsat OneWeb Listed by DoT among GMPCS-authorized licensees; the January 2026 parliamentary reply confirms authorization. Authorization does not establish a live residential offer. No verified household tariff, order channel, or consumer plan terms are established here.
Jio Satellite Communications Listed by DoT among GMPCS-authorized licensees; the January 2026 parliamentary reply confirms authorization. October 2026 reporting said a consumer price and commercial launch date were not confirmed, and that final clearances and spectrum were still needed.
Amazon Kuiper / Amazon Leo The January 2026 parliamentary reply said its Indian GMPCS application was under examination. An application under examination is not an authorized, launched household service. Check for a later regulator update before treating its status as changed.

These are regulatory-status comparisons, not like-for-like plan comparisons. The available sources do not establish Indian residential speeds, latency commitments, data allowances, equipment prices, installation charges, coverage maps, support arrangements or warranties for these providers. It would therefore be misleading to rank them by price or performance in India.

In particular, “Starlink vs OneWeb in India” cannot yet be answered by saying which household plan is faster, cheaper or more reliable: verified Indian consumer plan sheets for either provider are not established. OneWeb’s authorization should not be read as proof of a retail home product, and Starlink’s household offerings in other markets do not establish its Indian price, kit or service terms. Jio’s consumer name recognition likewise does not establish a commercial satellite launch date or a household tariff.

What GMPCS authorization does—and does not—mean

DoT describes GMPCS as covering satellite voice and non-voice services, including data and internet, as well as satellite data connectivity for Internet of Things and aggregator devices. Its licensing framework sets a national service area and requires a separate Indian satellite earth-station gateway for each authorized satellite system. It also lists conditions concerning privacy, lawful interception, routing Indian traffic within India, and technical standards.

The important limitation is explicit: a GMPCS license does not confer assignment or use rights for radio spectrum. Separate frequency assignment through the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) process is required. A license is thus one regulatory component, not proof that a network has completed the steps needed to sell a particular service to consumers. Current reporting also refers to final clearances, so the status should be checked again before relying on it; it is time-sensitive.

For a buyer, this means regulatory readiness has several layers. First, check that the operator has the relevant authorization. Then look for evidence that required spectrum assignment and clearances have been completed for the intended service. Finally, verify an Indian service offer, address eligibility, and approved equipment. A provider can be named in an official license list while the remaining steps toward customer service are unresolved.

A separate DoT page for Commercial VSAT CUG explains that a commercial VSAT closed-user-group licensee may provide internet after obtaining an ISP license. That licensing route does not, by itself, prove that a named satellite provider has a live consumer broadband offer. In other words, a technical or regulatory category that permits some form of internet service is not the same thing as an addressable, orderable home plan.

How to compare satellite internet options in India

Start with availability, not a headline speed or a rumored price. Then compare the complete service: equipment and recurring charges, plan terms, installation, support and regulatory readiness. Until providers publish Indian consumer terms, the right outcome may be “not enough confirmed information to choose,” rather than a speculative winner.

1. Verify an order at the exact address

Look for a provider-controlled Indian availability checker or order page that accepts the actual service address and returns a purchasable plan. Establish whether the offer is residential, business, mobility or wholesale: these categories may have different equipment, contract terms and permitted use. A countrywide license does not guarantee service at every location, and a general statement that satellite connectivity can reach remote areas is not a coverage commitment.

  • Confirm the exact address is serviceable, not merely within a broad national or regional description.
  • Check whether the page accepts an order now, offers only a waitlist, or describes a trial or planned launch.
  • Ask who the contracting provider is and who will install and support the connection in India.
  • Save the plan terms shown at checkout, including service address, plan category, taxes and any eligibility conditions.

Be precise about what “available” means. An authorization answers a regulatory question; a coverage map may indicate intended reach; a waitlist records interest; and an order confirmation indicates that a provider is accepting a purchase for the address. These are not interchangeable. If an agent or reseller says an order can be placed, ask for the Indian provider’s official checkout path and written confirmation that the account will be provisioned at your location.

2. Calculate the complete cost, not just a monthly fee

Request the Indian terminal price, shipping, installation, recurring service fee, taxes, and any charge for data, priority traffic, mobility or other add-ons. Also check whether a deposit, minimum term, cancellation charge or equipment return applies. Do not treat a foreign-market price, leaked figure, unofficial estimate or reseller quote as an official Indian household tariff.

As of the 2 October 2026 reporting cited here, Starlink had no official India residential price, while Jio had no confirmed consumer price or commercial launch date. No verified OneWeb household tariff is established in the available sources. Since there is no confirmed India price set for these consumer services, a price comparison table would imply evidence that is not available.

When an official offer does appear, compare the first-year outlay as well as the monthly fee: terminal and mounting equipment, delivery, installation, recurring service, taxes, and any fees tied to usage or priority. Then establish whether the equipment is purchased, leased, or subject to return conditions. If the provider does not publish a line item, ask for it in writing rather than treating an apparent “monthly price” as the full cost.

3. Compare service terms, not orbit labels alone

When Indian plans become orderable, compare the advertised speed range with any guaranteed or minimum performance commitment. Check latency information, data caps, deprioritization or fair-use rules, congestion policies, uptime commitments and remedies for extended outages. Determine whether the performance figures apply to your plan and address, and under what conditions the provider measures them.

Satellite type can provide broad context, but does not predict the service a particular customer will receive. The Ministry of Communications’ 2025 overview describes typical low Earth orbit (LEO) altitudes as 400–2,000 km and medium Earth orbit (MEO) altitudes as 8,000–20,000 km. It says LEO’s shorter distance is favorable to low latency, while MEO systems cover larger regions with somewhat higher latency. These are general characteristics, not measured Indian customer performance or a substitute for plan commitments.

Orbit class is only one part of a service comparison. A published orbit altitude does not tell you what speed will be available at your home, how busy a local network will be, what data rules apply or whether the provider offers an uptime commitment. Ask for the plan-specific performance and data policy, not a general technology description. If a provider publishes only “up to” speeds, treat that as an advertised maximum rather than a guaranteed minimum unless its terms say otherwise.

4. Confirm site, power and installation requirements

Ask the provider or its authorized Indian installer to assess the proposed mounting position and any obstructions. Confirm responsibility for mounting, cabling, power supply, weatherproofing and any building or landlord approvals. A terminal that cannot maintain a usable view of the required part of the sky, or that cannot be installed safely, may not deliver reliable service even if the address is nominally eligible.

Get written details on installation fees, repair process, warranty, expected repair turnaround and whether local support is available. The sources do not establish these terms for Starlink, OneWeb or Jio household service in India, so do not assume they will match another country’s policy or a third-party reseller’s assurances.

Before agreeing to an installation, establish whether the customer or provider is responsible for the mount, cable route, electrical connection and any access to a roof or shared building space. These are questions to resolve with the actual Indian provider; the service terms and hardware instructions should determine the requirements. Do not rely on a generic mounting accessory listing as proof that a particular terminal can be installed at your site.

5. Buy only equipment confirmed for Indian service

Do not purchase an imported satellite terminal on the assumption that it will work in India. A device may be incompatible with an Indian service configuration, lack an authorized support channel or be unsuitable for lawful operation. Before spending money, obtain confirmation from the provider or an authorized Indian reseller that the exact model is approved, compatible, orderable and supported for the specific Indian plan. A router, mount or installation accessory cannot create satellite service by itself.

This is also why a kit advertised for another country is not a safe shortcut around an unavailable Indian plan. A hardware listing does not establish that the provider will activate it, that its model is approved for the Indian network, or that warranty and repair service will be available locally. Wait for an authorized Indian sales path that identifies both the equipment and the service it supports.

6. Check support and accountability

Identify who handles billing, installation, outages and hardware failures. Ask whether support is provided directly by the operator or through a local partner, and get the repair and escalation process in writing. An internet connection may be critical for work or safety; a low quoted price is not enough if the service has no clear repair route or availability commitment.

Record the name of the party responsible for service, the support contact, warranty coverage, and the process for cancelling or returning equipment. Confirm whether support is available in the locality and what happens if the terminal fails. These details are not established for the providers’ Indian household services, so they should be checked in actual Indian plan documents rather than assumed from a different market.

Which satellite internet works in rural India?

There is no confirmed consumer plan in the sources that can be named as the answer for every rural household. The Ministry of Communications’ 29 January 2026 reply identifies rural, underserved and unserved locations—including remote, coastal, border and mountainous regions—as places satellite services could connect where terrestrial media such as optical fiber and microwave are difficult to extend. That describes a use case, not a provider coverage guarantee or a promise of a household order.

For a specific rural address, use the same test as in a city: check whether fiber, fixed wireless or mobile broadband is actually available, then verify satellite eligibility with a provider-controlled address checker. Compare documented costs and support. Remote geography may make satellite relevant, but it does not remove the need for a clear order channel, an installable site and service terms that meet the household’s needs.

When satellite internet may make sense

Satellite connectivity is most relevant where terrestrial networks are difficult to extend. In its 29 January 2026 parliamentary reply, the Ministry of Communications said satellite-based services can provide connectivity in rural, underserved and unserved areas, including remote, coastal, border and mountainous regions that are difficult to cover with terrestrial media such as optical fiber and microwave links.

That use case is not a blanket recommendation. Check which terrestrial services—fiber, fixed wireless or mobile broadband—are actually offered at the address, then compare their total cost, capacity, reliability and support with a confirmed satellite plan. A satellite option only helps if the provider can serve the site, the equipment can be installed, and the full price and service terms suit the household.

Do not infer that satellite is automatically the better choice just because a location is remote, or that a terrestrial option is available merely because it exists elsewhere in the district. Compare only serviceable options for the actual premises. For some households the deciding point may be a provider’s ability to install and repair locally; for others it may be the published price, usage policy or performance terms. Those details must come from the specific offer.

Do not confuse network capacity with household speed

The Ministry of Communications’ 2025 overview reports government satellite-bandwidth capacity increases from 2 Gbps to 4 Gbps in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and from 318 Mbps to 1.71 Gbps in Lakshadweep. These are network capacity figures for connectivity initiatives, not speed promises to individual households. They cannot be used to predict a customer’s download speed, latency, data allowance or service availability.

  • This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.

The same overview says NewSpace India Limited had 15 communication satellites in orbit. That figure describes the government-owned company’s satellite fleet as reported in the overview; it is not a count of satellites available to any specific household provider or an indication of consumer coverage.

Keep the scale of these figures in mind when comparing claims. A network-capacity number can describe an aggregate link or system resource; a household plan’s speed is a service term measured for an individual connection. Likewise, the number of satellites operated by one organization is not a count of satellites assigned to Starlink, OneWeb or Jio, and does not demonstrate that any of them is accepting home customers in India.

What to monitor before choosing

Because satellite service readiness can change quickly, re-check the regulator and the provider’s Indian consumer pages immediately before making a decision. Look for evidence of completed spectrum assignment and clearances, an Indian order path, approved equipment, and detailed plan terms—not only announcements or license listings.

  • Regulatory status: whether spectrum assignment and required clearances have been completed for the service being offered.
  • Consumer availability: an orderable plan and address-level eligibility, rather than a license, application, announcement or waitlist alone.
  • Published terms: Indian prices, taxes, speeds, data policy, installation requirements, support and equipment warranty.
  • Local accountability: a clear provider or authorized partner responsible for provisioning, billing and repairs.

Until those details are published, Starlink, OneWeb and Jio can be compared as authorized operators, but not responsibly ranked as available Indian household broadband services. Amazon Kuiper / Amazon Leo should be treated separately: the January 2026 government reply described its application as under examination, which is a different status from authorization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Starlink available in India for home internet?

As of 13 October 2026, the sources establish Starlink’s GMPCS authorization, not an orderable Indian household plan. The Economic Times reported on 2 October 2026 that spectrum and final clearances were still needed before customer service. Check Starlink’s official Indian availability and order pages for any later change.

How much will Starlink cost in India?

No official Indian residential price is established here. The Economic Times’ 2 October 2026 report said Starlink had no official India residential price. Treat foreign-market prices, unofficial estimates and reseller quotes as unconfirmed; compare terminal, installation, taxes and recurring fees only when Indian terms are published.

Is OneWeb available for Indian households?

OneWeb is listed by DoT as GMPCS-authorized, but that does not establish a live household offer. The available sources do not confirm an Indian residential tariff, order channel, coverage map or consumer plan terms. Verify a provider-controlled Indian order page before treating it as available.

Is Jio satellite internet available in India?

Jio Satellite Communications is listed as GMPCS-authorized. However, October 2026 reporting said a consumer price and commercial launch date were not confirmed, and that spectrum and final clearances remained prerequisites for customer service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which satellite internet provider is best for rural India?

There is not enough confirmed Indian consumer-plan information to rank Starlink, OneWeb and Jio by speed, price or reliability. Start by checking actual terrestrial options at the address, then compare any orderable satellite offer’s eligibility, total cost, performance terms, installation and local support.

Can I buy an imported Starlink or other satellite dish and use it in India?

Do not assume an imported terminal can be activated or supported in India. Confirm with the provider or an authorized Indian reseller that the exact model is approved, compatible and orderable for the Indian plan, and that warranty and local support apply.

The Bottom Line

Starlink, OneWeb and Jio have GMPCS authorizations in India, but authorization is not a household launch: spectrum assignment and final clearances were still outstanding in reporting dated 2 October 2026. No verified Indian home tariffs, plan performance terms or consumer order channels are established here. Before spending money, confirm an order at the exact address, the full price, approved equipment, installation and local support. Until then, compare them as regulatory entrants, not as available household broadband plans.
