Starlink, Jio and OneWeb are not yet three satellite-internet services you can compare and order in India. A report dated 2 October 2026 said all three held GMPCS authorisations, but still needed spectrum assignment and other clearances before offering commercial satellite broadband. No comparable India consumer plans, prices or launch dates had been confirmed in the sources available as of 7 October 2026.
1. A licence is not a launch date
India’s satellite-internet race is still a regulatory and commercial process, not a live three-way retail choice. The Economic Times reported on 2 October 2026 that Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications and OneWeb India held Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) authorisations. The same report said spectrum assignment and security or other regulatory requirements remained before commercial service could be offered to customers.
The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) backgrounder, published 23 September 2025, said Jio Satellite Communication Limited and OneWeb India Communications Private Limited had received licences before Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt. Ltd. received one in June 2025. Those authorisations establish regulatory progress; they do not, by themselves, confirm that a provider can sell service or when it will launch.
TRAI’s consultation on satellite-network authorisation and spectrum assignment was released on 8 April 2026, closed on 13 May 2026, and its page was updated on 6 October 2026. A consultation or policy-framework step is not final customer launch approval. Check official provider availability and Department of Telecommunications notices for changes before making plans.

Where each provider stood in the 2 October report
| Provider | What was reported | What was not established |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink | GMPCS-authorised; commercial service in India had not launched. | No official India residential price or consumer launch date. |
| Jio | Jio Satellite Communications held GMPCS authorisation. JioSpaceFiber was described as using SES satellite capacity to target areas conventional networks struggle to reach. | No confirmed consumer price or commercial launch date. |
| OneWeb | OneWeb India held GMPCS authorisation and had previously received IN-SPACe commercial broadband authorisation; the report said it was waiting for final spectrum authorisation. It also reported a Nelco distribution partnership for LEO connectivity on land, at sea and in the air. | No Indian consumer tariff or confirmed direct-to-consumer plan. |
The report distinguished JioSpaceFiber from a proposed longer-term Jio LEO network. A proposed network or a partner/distribution arrangement should not be read as proof of an available consumer plan. OneWeb’s business and distribution activity likewise does not establish a retail offer that households can order.
2. Satellite internet is aimed at places terrestrial networks struggle to reach
The PIB’s September 2025 backgrounder describes satellite service as complementary to other networks, with potential uses in remote villages, hilly terrain, border areas and islands. That is the clearest reason to consider it: a satellite connection may extend connectivity where laying or extending terrestrial infrastructure is difficult. It does not follow that satellite service will be the best or most economical connection wherever it is offered.
The same backgrounder reported 1,002.85 million internet subscribers in India for April–June 2025 and rural internet penetration of about 46 subscribers per 100 population. These are Government of India figures for the stated period and year; they provide context for the connectivity gap, not a measure of any satellite provider’s coverage or performance.

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
In a November 2023 company statement reproduced by The Economic Times, Bharti Group chairman and Eutelsat Group co-chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said: “Eutelsat OneWeb is ready to deploy as soon as it receives the final spectrum authorization to launch commercial services.” That historical readiness statement is not evidence that OneWeb service is currently on sale in India.
3. Orbit can explain technical positioning, but not which provider will perform best
Orbit height affects how a satellite network is designed. The PIB backgrounder gives the following general altitude ranges:
| Orbit class | Altitude range in the PIB backgrounder | General implication described by the PIB |
|---|---|---|
| Low Earth orbit (LEO) | 400–2,000 km above Earth | Closer satellites enable lower latency. |
| Medium Earth orbit (MEO) | 8,000–20,000 km above Earth | Satellites cover larger regions, with somewhat higher latency. |
These are broad technical descriptions, not India-specific measurements of Starlink, Jio or OneWeb. Orbit alone cannot tell you what speed, latency or reliability you would get at a particular address. Network capacity, congestion, plan, terminal, installation, location and other conditions matter. Starlink’s product documentation also says performance is conditional on location, time, plan, installation, equipment condition and other factors; that documentation does not verify India availability or a specific India-ready kit.

- 🏕️ Residential & Remote-Area Ready: Perfect for off-grid living, cabins, RVs, and rural households seeking a dependable high-speed internet solution.
4. Leaked figures are not India prices
The Economic Times reported that Starlink had not officially announced an India residential price. It said figures of ₹8,600 per month and ₹34,000 for equipment briefly appeared on Starlink’s India website in December 2025. Starlink operations vice-president Lauren Dreyer said on X that a technical glitch exposed test figures that did not represent actual India pricing. Treat those numbers as withdrawn test figures, not an offer or a reliable estimate.
The same report found no confirmed consumer price for Jio or OneWeb. Until each provider publishes an India offer, there is no sound basis for ranking the three by monthly cost or total setup expense.

Once India consumer plans are announced, compare them at your service address. A headline speed or monthly fee will not reveal whether the connection fits your site, budget or use. Check the offer terms for each of these items:
Rank #4
- Not official Starlink Bundle. No warranty.
- This is not an official starlink bundle. Purchasing this item does not come with a Starlink warranty.
- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
- Availability and status: Confirm that service can be ordered at your exact location and that the provider has the required approvals to sell it.
- Total setup cost: Add the terminal, mount, installation, power needs and any one-time charges to the recurring subscription.
- Real-world performance: Look for both typical and peak download and upload speeds, plus latency, and note the conditions behind any published figures.
- Data and congestion rules: Check for data limits, prioritisation, deprioritisation or speed changes during busy periods.
- Site requirements: Verify the required view of the sky, installation conditions, weather constraints and whether your location can meet them.
- Support and exit terms: Read the service, equipment replacement, contract and cancellation terms before paying for hardware or installation.
For Starlink hardware, its product documentation describes a kit containing a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply and mount. That is a general kit description, not confirmation of the exact equipment, price or availability for an Indian customer. The reviewed sources do not establish comparable India retail plans across the three providers, so a winner cannot yet be selected responsibly.
What this means if you are waiting for satellite internet
For now, treat Starlink, Jio and OneWeb as prospective options in India, not services with confirmed, comparable household plans. The Government of India backgrounder captures the broader public goal with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sentence: “India’s progress in space is now directly contributing to making the lives of ordinary citizens easier.” Whether that progress becomes a useful home connection for you will depend on approvals, a local serviceable address and published terms—not authorisation headlines or orbit labels alone.
