Neither a Starlink referral reward nor a promotional service price is automatically the better deal. A referral may provide free service, cash, or account credit under local terms, while a promotion reduces the monthly Residential or Roam charge for a stated period and then normally ends. Eligibility, order channel, service address, plan, duration, and post-offer price determine the real value.
Compare the terms shown for your address and country at checkout. Starlink’s referral pages describe different rewards in different locales, and its promotional pricing is offered only in selected areas. The official material reviewed does not establish a general rule that the two offers can be combined.
How do Starlink referral offers compare with promotional discounts?
A referral offer changes the form of your benefit: you might receive a free service month, cash, or service credit after meeting the local qualification rules. A promotional discount changes the amount you pay for service during a fixed introductory period. The referral reward may arrive later, whereas a promotional price lowers bills immediately.

Use the same service period and currency when comparing them. A large-looking reward can be worth less than several months of monthly savings, while a short promotion can be less valuable if the regular price is high or you expect to cancel early.

How Starlink referral offers work
You generally need a new account and a direct Starlink order
Starlink’s referral guidance says the referred customer must be new, use the unique referral link, sign up on starlink.com, and satisfy the local subscription requirement. The version retrieved states that the customer must remain subscribed for at least two months. It lists eligible Residential and Roam plans, but the exact eligible-plan list is part of the local terms and can change.
A kit purchased through a reseller or retailer does not qualify under that referral guidance. An account transfer also does not qualify. Therefore, buying hardware from a convenient retail channel can remove the referral benefit even if the kit itself is genuine and compatible with Starlink service.
The reward is not globally uniform
Starlink says referral rewards are available in most places where its service is offered, but it describes the reward type and amount as country dependent. One official help page gives $100 as an example for the United States; that page is undated, so the example is not a guaranteed current US amount. Another localized Starlink page says a referred customer can receive one free month of service on eligible plans, applied to the second month.

Those descriptions should not be treated as a contradiction to resolve by guessing which one is “standard.” They show why the offer displayed for your country, account, and referral link controls. Before ordering, record whether the benefit is a free month, cash, or service credit, who receives it, the qualifying plan, and the date or event that triggers it.
Timing and subscription conditions matter
A referral reward may be issued only after activation and a qualifying subscription period. If the local terms require two months of active service, cancelling during the first month could prevent the reward. The free-month description that applies in one locale says the credit is applied to the second month, not immediately at checkout.
Do not value a referral by its headline amount alone. Confirm the required activation, the minimum time you must remain subscribed, whether taxes or add-ons are excluded, and whether a reward expires or is applied automatically to the account.
How Starlink promotional pricing works
Availability is tied to the service address
Starlink’s promotional pricing terms say new customers in select areas can receive discounted Residential or Roam pricing. The offer is shown when you place an order, so a promotion advertised elsewhere may not appear for your address. Availability can also depend on whether the area is immediately serviceable or subject to a waitlist and on the plan selected.
The discount lasts for a fixed period
The general terms give six or twelve months as examples of promotional durations. Your checkout must state the actual number of months. The discount period begins on activation or seven days after the kit is delivered, whichever comes first. That means the clock may start before you first use the service if delivery occurs and activation is delayed.
When the stated period ends, the cited terms say the plan returns to full pricing. Treat the regular price shown in the order summary as the amount you will pay after the promotion, not the introductory amount.
“No commitment required” has limits
Starlink’s Promotional Service Pricing Terms of Service state: “No commitment required.” In the same terms, changing plans, cancelling, or having the account suspended ends the promotional pricing. The phrase therefore describes the general promotion’s commitment structure; it does not guarantee that every separate promotion has identical exit rules.

For Roam, the cited terms also require you to be physically in the activation country to remain eligible. Travelling or relocating can therefore affect continued promotional eligibility even when billing has not yet reached the end of the stated discount period.

What the European €250 service-credit offer shows
A separate Starlink European offer document illustrates why offer-specific terms must be read independently. It describes a €250 service credit for an eligible Standard Kit purchased from an authorized European retailer, paired with an eligible 12-month Residential plan. Eligibility depends on the service address.
Under that document, the credit is deposited 30 days after activation and applied against monthly service fees. The document describes a prorated change fee for specified actions before the 12 months end, including cancelling, changing the service address or plan, late payment, or transferring the kit. It also says the offer may be discontinued at any time.
This is a specific published European offer document, not a universal Starlink referral rule or proof that the offer is currently available in every European market. It also demonstrates that a retailer purchase can be required for one promotion while a referral reward excludes retailer purchases. Those order-channel rules cannot be combined by assumption.
How to compare the total value step by step
- Check the address first. Enter the exact service address and note whether the promotion appears, whether service is available immediately, and which plans qualify.
- Identify the order channel. For a referral, open the unique link and follow the direct starlink.com checkout. For a promotion, read whether the terms require direct purchase or an authorized retailer.
- Write down the benefit in its actual form. Record the amount or number of free months, whether it is cash or service credit, the recipient, and when it is applied.
- Record the qualifying period. Note activation requirements, any minimum subscription period, the promotional start date, and the exact end date or number of discounted months.
- Calculate service cost over the period you expect to keep the plan. Add every monthly charge during the introductory period and subtract only a reward that the terms say you are likely to receive. Keep hardware, shipping, taxes, and optional equipment separate unless the offer explicitly includes them.
- Calculate the later price. Use the full plan price displayed for the same address after the promotion. A referral reward does not permanently reduce that monthly price unless the local terms expressly say so.
- Check exit costs. Look for cancellation, plan-change, address-change, transfer, suspension, late-payment, or prorated fees. Do not transfer the 12-month European offer’s fees to the general no-commitment promotion.
- Confirm compatibility. Ask Starlink or verify the final order summary whether the referral reward and promotional price can coexist. The published material does not establish a general stacking rule.
A simple comparison is:
Net introductory cost = (discounted monthly price × discounted months) + one-time charges − confirmed reward value.

Then calculate the ongoing cost separately using the regular monthly price. If you expect to leave before the end of the promotional period, include any fee and do not count a referral reward that requires a longer subscription than your plan.
Does a Starlink referral offer give me a free month?
Sometimes, but not everywhere. One localized official Starlink page says the referred customer receives one free service month on eligible plans, applied to the second month. Another official referral page describes a country-dependent reward that can be cash or service credit and gives a US$100 example. Because the pages are localized and the general referral page is undated, only the reward shown in your own referral flow is reliable for your order.
Can I use a Starlink referral link if I buy my kit from a retailer?
Not for the referral reward under Starlink’s cited referral guidance. It excludes kits bought through retailers or resellers and excludes account transfers. If you are prioritizing a referral benefit, use the unique referral link and complete the qualifying order on starlink.com.
A retailer purchase can still be relevant to a separate promotion. The European €250 service-credit document, for example, describes an authorized-retailer purchase as part of that specific offer. That does not make the purchase eligible for a referral reward, and it does not prove that the European offer remains available.

The general promotional terms use six or twelve months as examples, but the actual duration is offer and address specific. Read the number of discounted months in your order summary. The period starts on activation or seven days after kit delivery, whichever comes first, so delivery can start the countdown before you begin using the connection.

Changing plans, cancelling, or account suspension ends the promotional pricing under the cited general terms. A separate promotion may impose a longer commitment or a prorated fee, so its document controls instead.

The cited general promotional terms say the service returns to full plan pricing after the fixed discount period. The later amount is the regular price shown for your plan and address, not necessarily the price advertised in another location. Save the checkout summary so you can see the end date and post-promotion charge.
Can referral and promotional discounts be combined?
The official material reviewed does not establish a universal stacking rule. A referral reward and a service-price promotion may have different eligibility systems, and one may replace or invalidate the other. Do not assume that entering a referral link preserves a promotional price, or that seeing a promotional price means a referral reward will be paid.
Check the final order summary and the applicable referral terms. If the summary does not clearly show both benefits, obtain confirmation from Starlink before completing payment.
Checkout checklist for a new customer
- Is the account genuinely new under the referral or promotion terms?
- Does the exact service address show the offer?
- Is the selected plan eligible?
- Are you ordering through the channel required by that offer?
- What is the benefit: free service, cash, service credit, or a lower monthly fee?
- When is the benefit applied, and what subscription period is required?
- When does the discounted period begin and end?
- What is the full monthly price afterward?
- What happens if you cancel, change plans, move the service address, transfer the kit, miss a payment, or suspend service?
- Does the final checkout explicitly show both offers, or has Starlink confirmed they can be combined?
Common mistakes to avoid
Comparing a reward with only the first bill
A free month or credit may arrive after activation, while a promotional discount applies over several bills. Compare the entire period you expect to keep service and include the regular price afterward.
Assuming a retailer purchase is interchangeable with direct checkout
The referral rules specifically exclude retailer and reseller kits. A retailer requirement in a separate promotion does not override that exclusion.
Treating an example amount as a guaranteed current offer
The $100 US figure is an example on an undated referral page. The €250 figure belongs to a specific European 2025 offer document. Neither should be presented as a universal, permanently current Starlink amount.

Assuming “no commitment” means every offer has no exit cost
The general terms use that phrase but also end promotional pricing after plan changes, cancellation, or suspension. Specific promotions can add commitments and prorated fees.
Bottom line for choosing between the two
Choose the offer that produces the lower confirmed total for your address and expected subscription period, not the one with the larger headline. A referral is attractive when its reward is clearly available, you can order directly, and you will remain subscribed long enough to qualify. A promotional price can be better when it applies to your address, lasts through the period you need, and has a manageable full price afterward. Verify the exact terms at checkout, especially order channel, reward timing, post-promotion price, exit fees, and whether the benefits stack.
