Starknet proves that its off-chain state transition is valid before Ethereum accepts the update. Arbitrum Nitro advances an assertion optimistically and lets validators challenge it with interactive fraud proofs. Both execute transactions away from Ethereum and use Ethereum for settlement, but the proof model, programming environment, chain configuration and withdrawal path are materially different.
The fundamental difference: proof first versus challenge if necessary
Starknet is a validity rollup. Its sequenced activity is processed under Starknet’s execution rules, and a STARK validity proof is submitted for the resulting state transition. Ethereum verifies that proof before Starknet’s state is updated through the Starknet Core contract. In practical terms, an invalid transition should not produce an accepted proof.
Arbitrum Nitro is an optimistic rollup. It executes transactions in an Ethereum-compatible environment and posts the relevant data and a state assertion to Ethereum. The assertion is treated as correct unless a validator disputes it. If there is a dispute, interactive fraud proofs narrow the disagreement until Ethereum can adjudicate the incorrect computation. Arbitrum’s current dispute system is called BoLD (Bounded Liquidity Delay), which the documentation describes as permissionless, all-vs-all validation with a bounded delay.

This is not simply a choice between two labels. Both systems move execution away from Ethereum’s base layer and rely on Ethereum for settlement. The difference is how Ethereum obtains confidence in the resulting state: Starknet supplies a validity proof for the transition, while Arbitrum relies on an optimistic assertion backed by a challenge process.

How Starknet establishes a valid state update
Execution and the Starknet operating system
Starknet’s execution environment is built around Cairo rather than the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The Starknet operating system, known as SNOS, represents the validity computation as a Cairo program. It processes the block’s effects according to Starknet’s rules and provides the computation that is proved by the STARK system.
Starknet’s documentation describes the essential rule this way: “As an L2 validity rollup, Starknet’s state on Ethereum can’t be updated without proving that all the blocks between the current state and the new state are valid.” That statement describes the security path, not a promise that every user operation is confirmed instantly.
Proof verification on Ethereum
After Starknet activity has been executed and the validity proof generated, the proof is submitted to Ethereum. The Starknet Core contract verifies the proof and updates the state that Ethereum recognizes as Starknet’s current state. The security-critical operation is therefore proof verification: Ethereum does not need to re-execute every Starknet transaction to accept the state transition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStarknet’s official roadmap describes the network as using STARK proofs for every state update. The roadmap also reports adoption of Ethereum’s EIP-4844 blob mechanism for more efficient data availability. Roadmap pages are dated snapshots of planned and completed phases, so an item marked complete or planned should not be treated as a guarantee about every future upgrade or operational detail.
What this means for users
A validity proof is produced as part of the state-update process. The reviewed official material does not establish a universal Starknet withdrawal duration, so it would be inaccurate to assign one. The time a user sees can depend on proof generation, Ethereum inclusion and the bridge or application route used.
How Arbitrum Nitro establishes an accepted state
Geth-based, EVM-compatible execution
Nitro uses an execution environment built around Geth, the Ethereum client software. This allows Arbitrum to process Ethereum-style transactions and smart contracts while batching activity away from Ethereum’s base layer. Transaction data is posted to Ethereum as calldata or blobs, depending on the chain configuration and current protocol operation.

Optimistic assertions
Arbitrum’s sequencer and validators produce an assertion about the L2 state. The protocol initially treats that assertion as correct. A validator that believes the computation is wrong can challenge it during the dispute period. Interactive fraud proofs repeatedly divide the disputed computation until the disagreement is reduced to a single step that Ethereum can resolve.
Arbitrum’s documentation currently identifies BoLD as its dispute system. BoLD is described as permissionless validation in which validators can challenge one another, with a bounded delay intended to prevent disputes from remaining unresolved indefinitely. The practical trust assumption is therefore different from Starknet’s: Arbitrum depends on the availability of at least one honest party willing and able to challenge an invalid assertion during the relevant window.
What “optimistic” does and does not mean
Optimistic does not mean that ordinary Arbitrum transactions remain unusable for the entire challenge period. Users can transact within Arbitrum while the rollup progresses. The prominent delay applies to proving an L2-to-Ethereum withdrawal through the canonical path, because the assertion covering the withdrawal must pass without a successful challenge.

Developer experience: Cairo versus EVM compatibility
Building on Starknet
Starknet’s Cairo execution model is a first-order development decision. Contracts and application logic are designed for Cairo and Starknet’s account and transaction model rather than assuming that Solidity bytecode can be deployed unchanged. Teams need to learn Cairo, use Starknet-compatible tooling and account abstractions, and verify that libraries and infrastructure support the Starknet environment.
The benefit of choosing this environment is direct access to Starknet’s validity-rollup architecture and its native execution model. The cost is migration effort for a team whose existing code, audits and deployment scripts are organized around Solidity and the EVM. A project should evaluate not only language syntax but also wallet support, indexing, testing frameworks, account handling and the availability of maintained Cairo libraries.
Building on Arbitrum
Arbitrum Nitro prioritizes compatibility with Ethereum contracts, transactions, wallets and familiar developer tools. Existing Solidity applications can generally target an EVM-compatible deployment model, although teams still need to check chain-specific behavior, gas settings, precompiles, bridge contracts and any differences in operational tooling.

That compatibility can reduce the amount of application code that must be rewritten and makes it easier to reuse Ethereum-oriented audits, libraries and deployment workflows. It does not remove the need for chain-specific testing: an application that works on Ethereum still needs testing on the selected Arbitrum chain, especially when it depends on timing, fee accounting, sequencing or bridge behavior.
Which is more EVM compatible?
Arbitrum is the more EVM-compatible choice. Nitro is explicitly built around Geth-based Ethereum execution. Starknet is not an EVM-equivalent environment; it uses Cairo and Starknet-specific execution and account concepts. EVM compatibility is therefore a practical differentiator, not a judgment that one proof system is universally superior.
Arbitrum is a platform with different chain configurations
“Arbitrum” does not describe one uniform data-availability and trust model. The specific chain matters.
Recommended Free Tools
Arbitrum One
Arbitrum One is described in Arbitrum’s introduction as a Rollup. Its data-availability and settlement assumptions are those of an optimistic rollup that posts the required information to Ethereum and uses the fraud-proof process for disputed assertions.
Arbitrum Nova
Arbitrum Nova is described as an AnyTrust chain. In its normal operating mode, AnyTrust relies on a data-availability committee. That committee-based design introduces a different trust assumption from Arbitrum One’s Rollup model: users must account for the committee’s role in making transaction data available.
When comparing Starknet with Arbitrum, name the chain being discussed. A statement about Arbitrum One should not automatically be applied to Nova, and a statement about Nova’s AnyTrust data availability should not be presented as a property of every Arbitrum deployment.

How long do Arbitrum withdrawals take?
Arbitrum’s documentation states a 6.4-day challenge period for the canonical withdrawal process from Arbitrum to Ethereum. The duration is the period after which an unchallenged assertion can be confirmed, and the documentation describes it as the typical delay for withdrawals to Ethereum.
- Initiate the withdrawal on Arbitrum. The withdrawal is included in an Arbitrum assertion and the corresponding data is posted for Ethereum settlement.
- Wait through the challenge period. The documented period is 6.4 days. During this time, validators can challenge an assertion they believe is incorrect.
- Finalize on Ethereum. After the assertion is confirmed, the user completes the Ethereum-side finalization transaction and receives the withdrawn assets on Ethereum.
This wait is not a six-day delay for normal transactions inside Arbitrum. It applies to the canonical route back to Ethereum. A third-party or application-operated fast bridge may provide a quicker user route for a fee by advancing liquidity and settling the canonical withdrawal later. Its fee, supported assets, limits and counterparty or liquidity risk must be evaluated separately; it does not eliminate the underlying challenge period in Arbitrum’s canonical settlement process.
Settlement, data and finality: avoid oversimplified comparisons
Both networks settle to Ethereum
Neither network executes every transaction directly on Ethereum’s base layer. Each batches activity, executes it on the L2 and uses Ethereum for data publication and settlement. The exact transaction path includes sequencing, batching, data posting and state confirmation, so “finality” can refer to different events: a transaction becoming visible on the L2, an assertion or proof being accepted by Ethereum, or assets arriving through a bridge.
Proof acceptance is not the same as user-perceived confirmation
Starknet’s proof-based state update and Arbitrum’s challenge-based assertion describe how Ethereum accepts a state transition. They do not, by themselves, specify the wallet confirmation time for every application. Sequencer policies, Ethereum congestion, proof-generation or dispute operations, and the bridge route can all affect what a user sees.
Data availability depends on the named chain
Starknet’s roadmap reports EIP-4844 blob adoption. Arbitrum Rollup chains can post data as blobs or calldata, while Nova’s AnyTrust configuration uses a data-availability committee in its normal mode. These are protocol and chain-level details, not a basis for a timeless claim that one network always has lower fees or higher throughput.

- Speed: distinguish sequencer inclusion, L2 execution, Ethereum settlement and bridge completion. A single “TPS” number does not describe all four.
- Fees: account for execution, batch compression, Ethereum data posting, blob or calldata costs and chain configuration. Fees fluctuate with demand and Ethereum’s fee market.
- Decentralization: assess the current sequencer, validator, prover and dispute arrangements for the particular network version. A roadmap goal is not proof that a future design is already live.
Arbitrum’s own documentation says, “Arbitrum does not make Ethereum faster.” The useful interpretation is that Arbitrum moves execution and batching off Ethereum while retaining Ethereum as the settlement layer; it does not increase Ethereum’s base-layer block production rate.
A decision guide for developers and users
Choose Starknet when the proof model and Cairo environment fit
- You want a validity-rollup architecture in which Ethereum verifies a proof for the state transition.
- Your team is prepared to build and maintain Cairo-based contracts and Starknet-specific account and tooling integrations.
- Your application benefits from Starknet’s native ecosystem and you can validate wallet, indexer and bridge support before deployment.
- You can design the product around the withdrawal and settlement behavior of the chosen Starknet route without assuming an unsupported time estimate.
Choose Arbitrum when EVM compatibility is the priority
- You need to reuse Solidity contracts, Ethereum wallets, transactions, libraries or deployment workflows.
- Your team prefers Nitro’s Geth-based execution model and is comfortable with optimistic assertions and fraud-proof challenges.
- You can tolerate the canonical withdrawal process, including the documented 6.4-day challenge period to Ethereum.
- You have identified the exact chain, such as Arbitrum One or Arbitrum Nova, and understand its data-availability assumptions.
Questions to answer before deployment
- Which execution environment does the application and its audit history assume: Cairo or EVM?
- Which state-verification model does the team want to operate around: validity proofs or optimistic assertions and challenges?
- Which exact chain and bridge route will users use?
- What does the product call “confirmed”: sequencer acceptance, Ethereum settlement or completed withdrawal?
- What dated measurements will be collected for the target workload before making fee or performance claims?
Bottom line for the comparison
Starknet and Arbitrum both scale Ethereum by executing away from the base layer and settling back to it, but they establish acceptance differently. Starknet’s validity-rollup path requires a STARK proof for the state update. Arbitrum Nitro’s optimistic path accepts an assertion unless a validator challenges it through interactive fraud proofs.
That architectural distinction leads to the practical choice. Starknet means a Cairo-oriented development environment and proof-based settlement. Arbitrum means EVM-compatible execution, an optimistic dispute process and a documented 6.4-day canonical withdrawal challenge period. Compare the specific chain, bridge route, tooling requirements and measured workload rather than declaring either network universally faster, cheaper or more decentralized.
