Short answer: Starfield still does not have a released, publicly tested seamless orbit-to-surface landing mod. Frederik Wessberg announced a PC-only SFSE project on 11 October 2026, but it remains a work in progress. The released Seamless Planet Takeoffs SFSE (Beta) removes the loading screen when leaving a planet, while True Seamless Grav Jumps SFSE handles interstellar jumps. Neither released mod provides seamless planetary landings, and no source supplies a controlled performance benchmark.
What “seamless landing” means in Starfield
Starfield divides space travel into separate transitions. A ship can depart a planet, jump between star systems, or descend from orbit to a surface. Those are different technical problems, so a mod that removes one loading screen does not automatically remove the others.
Orbit-to-surface landing
A true seamless-landing system keeps the game interactive while the ship flies from low orbit through an atmosphere to a terrain surface. The announced Wessberg project is aimed at this transition. Its teaser describes manual low-orbit control or an autopilot, the ability to walk around the ship during descent, landing at arbitrary locations including water, 3D planets, atmospheric and weather effects, and background loading of assets.

Seamless Planet Takeoffs SFSE (Beta) addresses the opposite direction. It removes the takeoff loading screen and places the ship above the landing site. It does not make the preceding landing seamless and should not be described as a landing solution.

Grav-jump transition
True Seamless Grav Jumps SFSE covers travel between star systems. It removes the grav-jump loading screen and the accompanying white flash. A grav-jump mod does not affect atmospheric flight or a planetary landing.
Comparison at a glance
| Mod or project | Transition covered | Features and status | Requirements and compatibility | Performance evidence and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seamless planetary landing project — Frederik Wessberg | Orbit to surface | Creator-announced work in progress; PC-only and intended for SFSE. Planned features include manual or autopilot descent, walking inside the ship, water landings, 3D planets, atmospheric and weather effects, and background asset loading. The creator says the planned mod will be free. | No released mod page or public compatibility matrix was documented in the 11 October 2026 announcement. Compatibility with a specific game build or other mods is therefore unverified. | No public benchmark or release testing. The teaser demonstrates a concept, not stable performance. |
| Seamless Planet Takeoffs SFSE (Beta), version 1.4 | Planet to space | Removes the takeoff loading screen and spawns the ship above the landing site. Version 1.4 listing updated 10 October 2026; it remains beta. | Requires Starfield Script Extender (SFSE) and Address Library. Fly Closer To Planets in Cruise Mode is optional but recommended; without it, the listing warns that entering cruise mode after takeoff may teleport the ship upward. | Changelog entries mention crash, camera, weather, glow, and visual fixes. No frame-rate, loading-time, or controlled stability measurement is published. |
| True Seamless Grav Jumps SFSE, version 1.3 | System to system | Removes the grav-jump loading screen and white flash. Listing updated 11 October 2026; the author labels it beta. | Requires SFSE and Address Library. The changelog documents fixes and support for Astrogate and Grav Lanes; check the live page and its configuration instructions before combining them. | The author recommends disabling autosave on travel to reduce stutter. Changelog notes include crash fixes and a stutter reduction, not a controlled performance comparison. |
| Astrogate | Supercruise, autopilot, and related travel options | Adds supercruise and autopilot options. Its listing includes new and existing landing-site autopilot features; existing-site autopilot is marked experimental and disabled by default. | The changelog records compatibility work and optional integrations. Exact requirements and conflicts depend on the current release notes. | Script optimization is mentioned in the changelog, but no benchmark is supplied. Experimental landing-site behavior should be treated as such. |
Frederik Wessberg’s seamless-landing project
Current status
Wessberg’s 11 October 2026 announcement describes a project rather than a downloadable, supported release. It is PC-only, built for SFSE, and still in development. A 12 October 2026 PC Gamer report quoted Wessberg saying, “It’s still a work in progress, and it’s PC-only, made for SFSE.” There is no public release page, version number, tested game-build list, or compatibility matrix to use for installation decisions.
What the planned system is intended to do
- Fly manually at low orbit or hand control to an autopilot.
- Keep the ship interactive during descent so the player can walk around inside it.
- Permit landings at arbitrary locations, including water.
- Render planets in 3D from space rather than switching immediately to a separate surface scene.
- Show atmospheric and weather effects during the approach.
- Load terrain and other assets in the background while the game remains interactive.
Wessberg explained the technical ambition to PC Gamer: “I had to completely reimplement Starfield’s planet rendering in space in 3D,” and said, “The underlying loading mechanism is entirely done in the background, while the game is still interactive.” These statements describe the design approach, not a guarantee of release quality, frame rate, or compatibility.
What you can and cannot conclude
The project is the only item in this comparison aimed directly at orbit-to-surface flight, but it cannot be ranked alongside released mods as if it were a stable product. Until a public build appears, do not assume it works with a particular Starfield update, save, weather overhaul, ship framework, autopilot mod, or other SFSE plugin. Do not install files advertised as this project unless they come from an identifiable release by the creator.
Seamless Planet Takeoffs SFSE (Beta) 1.4
What it changes
This beta removes the loading screen associated with leaving a planetary landing site and places the ship above that site. The transition can feel different depending on the planet’s atmosphere and weather. The creator, 0xBobby, cautions that “The seamlessness of the transition will depend on the atmosphere and weather of the planet,” and says work continues on smoothing it.

Required components
- Starfield Script Extender (SFSE): the scripting framework required by the mod.
- Address Library: the address-mapping dependency listed by the mod.
- Fly Closer To Planets in Cruise Mode: optional, but recommended by the author to avoid a possible upward teleport when cruise mode is entered after takeoff.
Install and test safely
- Confirm that your Starfield game build is supported by the current SFSE release before installing any dependent plugin.
- Install SFSE and Address Library using the current instructions for your chosen mod manager or manual setup.
- Install version 1.4 of Seamless Planet Takeoffs, then read its configuration and load-order notes rather than copying settings from an older release.
- Make a separate save before testing. Try several planets with different atmospheres and weather conditions because the author says transition smoothness varies.
- If you use cruise mode, add Fly Closer To Planets in Cruise Mode as recommended; otherwise watch for the documented upward-teleport behavior.
- Test takeoff by itself before adding another travel overhaul. This isolates whether a camera, weather, or script problem belongs to the takeoff mod or to an interaction.
Known caveats
The 1.4 changelog records fixes for crashes, camera behavior, weather, glow, and other visual issues. Those entries show active maintenance, but they do not establish a frame-rate gain, a specific reduction in loading time, or universal stability.
True Seamless Grav Jumps SFSE 1.3
Scope and behavior
Version 1.3 removes the loading screen and white flash during a grav jump between systems. It does not alter a planet’s atmosphere, landing-site generation, or takeoff sequence. The listing was updated 11 October 2026 and is marked beta.

Dependencies and integrations
SFSE and Address Library are required. The changelog documents compatibility fixes and support for Astrogate and Grav Lanes, but those integrations can change between releases. Read the live configuration notes before enabling more than one system that controls travel effects.
Stutter guidance
The author recommends disabling autosave on travel to reduce stutter. That is a user-side mitigation, not proof that the mod improves performance. Changelog entries mention crash fixes and a stutter reduction; no controlled test compares frame times, loading duration, or crash frequency with and without the mod.
Where Astrogate fits
Astrogate is a broader travel option rather than a dedicated seamless-landing replacement. It adds supercruise and autopilot features, including landing-site autopilot options. Existing-site autopilot is explicitly experimental and disabled by default, so it should not be presented as a reliable substitute for true orbit-to-surface flight.

The Astrogate changelog records compatibility work and optional integrations, including interactions with other travel systems. Because the available notes do not establish a single permanent dependency list or conflict-free combination, check the current release documentation before pairing it with either SFSE transition mod. Script optimization references are qualitative; there is no published benchmark.

- Want to leave a planet without a loading screen? Start with Seamless Planet Takeoffs, provided your SFSE and Address Library versions match its current requirements.
- Want to remove the system-jump loading screen? Evaluate True Seamless Grav Jumps SFSE 1.3 and follow its autosave and configuration guidance.
- Want orbit-to-surface flight? There is no released, verified option in the material available here. Track Wessberg’s project for a legitimate public release instead of treating takeoff or grav-jump mods as substitutes.
- Want a wider travel overhaul? Astrogate may add supercruise and autopilot, but its experimental landing-site behavior and changing integrations require extra testing.
SFSE plugins are version-sensitive. A game update can require a new extender, Address Library build, or mod release even when the mod’s feature set has not changed. Keep a record of the versions installed, read each changelog, and test one travel component at a time after updates.

No source provides a comparable benchmark for these options. There are no trustworthy figures for frames per second, loading-time reduction, memory use, CPU cost, or crash-rate change. “Performance Optimization” tags and changelog references to optimization, stutter, or crash fixes are not substitutes for controlled testing.
The most defensible expectations are qualitative:
- Takeoff smoothness can vary with atmospheric conditions and weather.
- Grav-jump stutter may be reduced by disabling autosave on travel, according to the author’s guidance.
- Both released SFSE mods have beta status, so occasional visual or stability regressions remain possible.
- The landing project’s background loading and 3D planetary rendering are announced design goals, not measured resource characteristics.
If you test locally, compare the same save, location, weather state, ship, graphics settings, and travel route with the mod enabled and disabled. Record frame-time behavior and crashes rather than relying on a single subjective transition. Do not generalize a result from one planet or one weather condition to every world.
Troubleshooting common problems
The ship jumps upward after takeoff
Install or enable Fly Closer To Planets in Cruise Mode as recommended by the takeoff mod’s listing, then retest from a clean save. If the behavior persists, verify that SFSE, Address Library, and the takeoff mod all support the same game build.

The transition looks rough or stalls on some planets
Atmosphere and weather affect takeoff smoothness. Reproduce the issue on another world and with weather-related additions temporarily disabled. A visual difference between planets is not by itself evidence of a broken installation.
Grav jumps stutter or crash
Follow the grav-jump author’s advice to disable autosave on travel, then test without optional integrations. Recheck the current changelog for fixes affecting Astrogate or Grav Lanes before changing multiple files at once.
Landing-site autopilot behaves unpredictably
Astrogate marks existing-site autopilot as experimental and disabled by default. Enable it only when you understand its current configuration, and do not confuse an autopilot-assisted landing with a verified seamless orbit-to-surface transition.
Bottom line for 2026
Choose by transition, not by the word “seamless.” Seamless Planet Takeoffs SFSE (Beta) 1.4 is the released option for departing a planet; True Seamless Grav Jumps SFSE 1.3 is for system-to-system jumps; Astrogate broadens supercruise and autopilot options but includes experimental landing-site behavior. The genuinely seamless orbit-to-surface experience is represented by Frederik Wessberg’s PC-only SFSE project, which was still unreleased and unverified as of the 11 October 2026 announcement. None of the available sources establishes a comparative performance advantage.
