Starfield requires a 64-bit Windows PC with 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 12 graphics card, 125 GB of free storage on an SSD, and at least a Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K processor. Bethesda’s recommended examples raise the CPU and GPU tiers, but neither list promises a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset. Compare your hardware with the table below, install the game on an SSD, update your graphics driver, and then work through Bethesda’s troubleshooting order if performance is poor.

What Starfield’s PC requirements actually tell you

Bethesda publishes two configurations: minimum and recommended. They are compatibility reference points, not a benchmark or an FPS guarantee. A computer that meets the minimum row may run the game, but the requirements do not specify a frame-rate target, resolution, visual preset, or image-quality level. The recommended row is likewise a set of component examples rather than a promise of a particular experience.

The most important practical detail is storage. Bethesda marks an SSD as required in both configurations and separately advises players with performance problems to move the installation from a hard-disk drive to an SSD. The 125 GB figure is available disk space, not memory, and Bethesda does not specify a required SSD interface.

Use Bethesda’s current PC requirements page as the authority for the listed examples. The page was checked in October 2026; hardware generations and driver support can change, so treat the table as the publisher’s baseline rather than a modern buying guide.

Network Not listed Broadband internet connection

Bethesda lists 16 GB for both tiers. Buying more memory is not required by this specification, although other programs running at the same time can affect how much memory remains available. The graphics rows identify example cards, not an exhaustive list of every card that may work. Compare your card’s capabilities with the published tier and use the troubleshooting steps below rather than inferring performance from the model name alone.

How to check your own PC before installing

1. Confirm Windows and processor details

  1. Open Settings > System > About and check the Windows edition, version, processor model, and installed RAM.
  2. For a more detailed processor and memory view, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, open Task Manager, and select the Performance tab.
  3. Compare the exact CPU model with Bethesda’s minimum and recommended examples. “Ryzen 5” or “Core i5” by itself is not enough; the generation and model number matter.

2. Check the graphics adapter and DirectX

  1. In Task Manager’s Performance tab, select each GPU entry and note the model and dedicated-video-memory information.
  2. Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and review the System and Display tabs. The tool reports the installed DirectX version and the active display adapter.
  3. On a laptop, check whether both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU are present. Using the integrated adapter can produce very different results from using the dedicated one.

3. Verify the installation drive and free space

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage or File Explorer > This PC and identify the drive where the game will be installed.
  2. Check whether that drive is an SSD. Windows’ Defragment and Optimize Drives utility labels the media type as solid-state drive or hard disk drive.
  3. Make sure at least 125 GB is available on the target drive. Leave additional working room for Windows, updates, and other applications instead of filling the volume completely.

If the processor, graphics adapter, or operating system falls below the minimum row, changing an in-game slider cannot turn that component into a supported one. If the machine meets the rows but performance is poor, continue with the ordered checks rather than immediately purchasing parts.

The first performance fixes to try

Bethesda’s performance guidance starts with requirements and storage, then moves through drivers, overlays, files, GPU selection, and power settings. These are troubleshooting actions, not guaranteed performance boosts. Follow them in order so that each change has a clear result. The complete list is in Bethesda’s Starfield PC performance support article.

1. Put Starfield on an SSD

If the game is on an HDD, reinstall or move it to an SSD with at least the required free capacity. Bethesda identifies SSD storage as a requirement and specifically recommends it instead of an HDD when investigating performance problems. This is the one storage change that addresses a stated requirement; Bethesda does not name a required interface such as SATA or a particular capacity beyond the 125 GB available-space figure.

2. Install the current graphics driver

Use the driver update utility supplied for your GPU, reboot when it asks, and then start Starfield again. A driver that is merely installed is not necessarily current. If a problem began immediately after an update, record the driver version before trying another release so you can undo the change if needed.

3. Temporarily disable overlays

When investigating low frame rate or other performance issues, Bethesda recommends disabling Steam Overlay and/or Xbox Game Bar. In Steam, open the game’s properties and turn off the overlay option for the title. In Windows, disable Xbox Game Bar from Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar. Test the game after each change; overlays can be useful, so restore them if they are not involved.

4. Verify the installed files

For a Steam installation, open Library, right-click Starfield, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before launching. It can replace damaged or missing files without requiring a complete reinstall.

5. Make sure the dedicated GPU is selected

On a laptop or a desktop with more than one adapter, Windows may assign the game to an integrated GPU. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the Starfield executable if it is not listed, select Options, and choose High performance. Confirm the active adapter in Task Manager while the game is running. The label and menu wording can vary slightly by Windows release, but the goal is the same: assign Starfield to the primary or dedicated GPU.

6. Use a high-performance power profile

Bethesda suggests a high-performance power profile for troubleshooting. In Settings > System > Power & battery, choose the highest available performance mode while testing. A laptop should be connected to its charger; battery-saving modes can deliberately limit processor and GPU power.

7. Continue with Bethesda’s deeper checks

If the preceding actions do not resolve the issue, Bethesda’s support sequence continues with running the game using administrator permissions, creating an antivirus exclusion for the game where appropriate, checking DirectX runtime files, and testing a new Windows user profile or a Selective Startup. These steps change security or startup behavior, so use them only long enough to isolate the cause and return normal protection and startup settings afterward. An antivirus exclusion should be limited to the game’s known folder and removed if it does not help.

Use Starfield’s upscaling and frame-generation options correctly

Starfield includes more than one rendering path on PC. The correct setting depends on the GPU and on whether frame generation is active. Bethesda’s advice for FSR 3 and its advice for DLSS Frame Generation use different VSync states; do not combine them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FSR 3 on supported hardware

Bethesda’s February 7, 2024 FSR 3 announcement directs players to Display Settings > Upscaling and says to choose the option that suits their system. The announcement states: “It is also recommended to use FSR 3 with VSync ON and with a VRR monitor for the best experience.” A variable-refresh-rate display is therefore an optional pairing for this feature, not a Starfield system requirement.

Change one setting at a time and observe whether image quality, responsiveness, or stability improves. Upscaling changes the internal rendering resolution and presentation; it does not repair a PC that is below the published minimum or replace the SSD requirement.

DLSS features on compatible NVIDIA GPUs

Bethesda documents support for DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency, and DLSS Frame Generation on compatible NVIDIA cards. The official DLSS support page says VSync must be Off while DLSS Frame Generation is active in order to see its benefit. That instruction is specific to the DLSS Frame Generation path; it is not a replacement for the FSR 3 recommendation to use VSync On. The page also notes that Bethesda was working to automate the VSync setting in a future update, so check the current in-game behavior after updates rather than assuming it changed.

Decide what, if anything, to upgrade

Situation Priority Reason
Game installed on an HDD Required fix: move it to an SSD Bethesda lists SSD storage in both requirement tiers and recommends it for performance troubleshooting.
Less than 125 GB free on the installation drive Required capacity: free space or use another SSD The published requirement is 125 GB available space; it is not a 125 GB RAM requirement.
GPU below the minimum example Conditional hardware upgrade Compare the complete PC, power supply, case, CPU, and driver support before selecting a card. The requirements page does not establish an FPS result for a replacement.
System meets the minimum but not the recommended examples Not automatically an upgrade mandate Recommended parts are publisher examples, not a required purchase or a frame-rate guarantee.
Using FSR 3 and wanting variable refresh Optional VRR monitor Bethesda recommends VRR with FSR 3, but it is not listed as a system requirement.
16 GB installed No requirement-driven RAM upgrade Bethesda lists 16 GB for both minimum and recommended configurations.

A graphics-card upgrade is a system decision, not a reaction to the word “recommended” alone. Check the processor, power supply capacity and connectors, case clearance, cooling, operating-system support, and available driver before buying. Those factors are not specified by Bethesda’s requirements table, so the table cannot identify a universally suitable replacement model.

  • RAM: verify that 16 GB is installed and available to Windows.
  • Drive: confirm that the game will be on an SSD and that at least 125 GB is free.
  • Operating system: check that Windows meets the stated version baseline and has current updates.
  • DirectX: use dxdiag to confirm Version 12 support.
  • Laptop behavior: verify that the dedicated GPU is selected and that the charger and high-performance profile are active.

This method distinguishes a requirement problem from a configuration problem. For example, two laptops can have similar processor names while one is running on an integrated adapter or battery profile; the model comparison alone would miss that difference.

Symptoms and the most relevant next check

Symptom Check first Next action
Long stalls, streaming pauses, or the game is on a mechanical drive Installation media Move the game to an SSD with sufficient free space.
Low frame rate on a laptop Active GPU and power state Assign the dedicated GPU, plug in the charger, and select high performance.

Crashes or odd behavior after an interrupted update Game files Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files operation.
FSR 3 does not feel smooth Display Settings > Upscaling and VSync Use the FSR 3 path, enable VSync as Bethesda recommends, and consider a VRR monitor.
DLSS Frame Generation benefit is not apparent DLSS mode and VSync Confirm compatible NVIDIA hardware and turn VSync off while Frame Generation is active, per Bethesda’s DLSS guidance.

A practical order for every new installation

  1. Check Windows, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX, and free storage against the official table.
  2. Install Starfield on an SSD and confirm the drive has at least 125 GB available.
  3. Update the graphics driver and restart Windows.
  4. Launch once with overlays disabled if you are troubleshooting frame rate or instability.
  5. Verify the game files before attempting a full reinstall.
  6. On a laptop or multi-GPU system, select the dedicated adapter, connect AC power, and use the high-performance profile.
  7. Choose FSR 3 or a compatible DLSS feature in Display Settings > Upscaling, applying the VSync rule for that specific path.
  8. If the issue remains, test administrator permissions, security-software exclusions, DirectX runtime files, and a clean Windows startup or new profile as Bethesda describes.

This sequence starts with requirements and reversible configuration changes, then moves to deeper Windows troubleshooting. It avoids treating an unverified FPS target as a pass/fail test and keeps FSR 3 and DLSS frame-generation instructions separate.

Bottom line

For Starfield on PC, the non-negotiables in Bethesda’s published specification are 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, 125 GB of available SSD storage, and a processor and graphics card at least comparable to the listed minimum examples. The recommended row raises the CPU and GPU examples but does not define a guaranteed frame rate. If performance is poor, start with the SSD, driver, overlays, file verification, dedicated-GPU selection, and power profile; then use the deeper Bethesda checks. Select FSR 3 or DLSS according to your hardware and follow the VSync instruction for the feature you are actually using.
