Short answer: Starfield’s official PC minimum is a Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K, Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043), 125 GB of free space, and an SSD. Bethesda’s recommended tier raises the processor to a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K and the graphics card to a Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080. It still lists 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, 125 GB, and an SSD.

Those are publisher requirement tiers, not promises of a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, or visual experience. Use the exact model names below to check your computer, then verify storage, operating-system, power, cooling, and upgrade compatibility before buying parts.

Official Starfield PC requirements

Bethesda Support’s current PC requirements page, accessed in 2026, separates Starfield hardware into minimum and recommended tiers. Steam’s listing reflects the same major categories. The table shows every value published for the two tiers.

Operating system Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043) Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K
Memory 16 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics card AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
DirectX DirectX 12 DirectX 12
Available storage 125 GB 125 GB
Drive type SSD required SSD required
Internet Not listed in the minimum tier Broadband internet

The processor and graphics-card classes are the meaningful differences between the tiers. RAM, DirectX, free space, and SSD requirements are identical. Bethesda does not attach a target resolution, preset, or FPS figure to either tier, so “minimum” cannot be translated into a guaranteed 30 or 60 frames per second.

What the minimum and recommended labels actually tell you

Minimum is a compatibility floor

A computer that matches the minimum list has the components Bethesda chose as its lower supported tier. It does not establish which graphics preset you can use, how stable performance will be in every location, or whether a laptop will sustain those specifications under heat and power limits. Match the named CPU and GPU models rather than relying on a brand name, product generation, or a retailer’s claim that a part is “gaming equivalent.”

Recommended is a higher hardware target, not a performance guarantee

The recommended list moves to a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K and a Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080. Bethesda still specifies 16 GB of RAM and the same storage and DirectX requirements. Because no resolution, preset, or frame-rate target is supplied, the tier is best treated as a stronger starting point for configuration decisions, not a promised experience.

Why equivalent-model guesses are risky

Model numbers from different generations do not form a reliable one-to-one ladder. A newer-looking name may have different performance, memory bandwidth, driver support, or power behavior. If your part is not one of the listed models, compare it using a dependable, device-specific technical source and treat the result as an estimate. The Bethesda requirement page itself does not certify substitutes.

How to check whether your PC meets the list

Collect your exact Windows version, processor, graphics adapter, RAM amount, and available SSD space before deciding on an upgrade. Windows’ built-in tools are enough to identify the basic specifications.

  1. Check Windows. Press Windows + R, enter winver, and confirm the version and build. The minimum published operating system is Windows 10 version 21H1, build 10.0.19043. A supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should also be fully updated.
  2. Check the processor and memory. Open Settings → System → About and read the processor model and installed RAM. You need to compare the complete model name with the Ryzen 5 2600X/Core i7-6800K minimum or Ryzen 5 3600X/Core i5-10600K recommended tier.
  3. Check the graphics adapter. Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, or run dxdiag and open the Display tab. Record the exact Radeon or GeForce model. Integrated graphics should not be assumed to meet a listed discrete-card tier.
  4. Confirm DirectX. In dxdiag, read the DirectX Version entry. Starfield’s published requirement is DirectX 12 for both tiers.
  5. Identify the installation drive. In File Explorer, right-click the intended drive, choose Properties, and confirm that it is an SSD and has at least 125 GB free. Leave additional room for Windows, updates, and other applications instead of filling the drive to its limit.
  6. Compare every item. Make a checklist with one row for the operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX, free space, and drive type. The first component below the minimum tier is the one that needs investigation; do not assume that exceeding one requirement compensates for missing another.

Upgrade priorities when a component falls short

1. Move the game from an HDD to an SSD

Bethesda labels an SSD as required and its performance guidance tells players to install Starfield on a solid-state drive rather than a hard disk drive. The requirement does not specify SATA versus NVMe, a particular interface, or a 1 TB capacity. It specifies the drive type and 125 GB of available space.

Before purchasing, check your computer’s supported interface, physical form factor, spare connector, and operating-system compatibility. A desktop may accept a 2.5-inch SATA drive or an M.2 drive; a laptop may have only one replaceable slot, or its storage may be soldered. Those are system-specific facts, not Starfield requirements. “1TB internal SSD” is a useful shopping search phrase, but it is not a published capacity requirement for the game.

2. Address the graphics card

The minimum GPU tier is a Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. The recommended tier is a Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080. If your card is below the minimum, a graphics upgrade is the most direct way to move toward the listed hardware level, but the requirement page provides no benchmark for predicting the resulting FPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a desktop, verify power-supply capacity and connectors, case clearance, motherboard slot availability, and cooling. Large modern cards can be longer, taller, or thicker than the card they replace. On a laptop, the GPU is commonly not replaceable; check the exact model’s service documentation rather than planning a desktop-style swap.

  • UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest

3. Evaluate the processor

Compare your CPU with the Ryzen 5 2600X/Core i7-6800K minimum and Ryzen 5 3600X/Core i5-10600K recommended entries. A processor replacement can require a different socket, motherboard firmware, cooler mounting hardware, or memory support. Confirm those dependencies before ordering a part. Bethesda’s list does not establish which motherboard upgrades are possible.

4. Treat 16 GB as the published RAM threshold

Both tiers list 16 GB of RAM. The cited requirements do not say that Starfield needs more than 16 GB. If your system has less, reaching 16 GB addresses the stated threshold; if it already has 16 GB, additional memory is not an official requirement. Check the motherboard’s memory type, slot count, and supported modules before buying.

Desktop and laptop compatibility checks

Desktop checklist

  • Confirm the motherboard socket and firmware support for a proposed CPU.
  • Check the power supply’s wattage, PCIe power connectors, age, and available headroom for a new GPU.
  • Measure graphics-card length, height, and thickness against the case and adjacent expansion slots.
  • Verify that the cooler fits the replacement processor and that the case has adequate airflow.
  • Check whether the motherboard offers the required SATA port or M.2 slot for the SSD.
  • Back up important files before changing storage or reinstalling Windows.

Laptop checklist

  • Find the exact manufacturer model and sub-model; two laptops with the same family name can have different CPUs, GPUs, and storage layouts.
  • Check the service manual for replaceable RAM and SSDs. Do not assume the GPU or CPU can be changed.
  • Use the charger specified for the laptop and keep firmware and graphics drivers current through the manufacturer’s supported channels.
  • If the laptop has more than one GPU, confirm that Starfield is assigned to the primary discrete adapter.

Storage planning for the 125 GB requirement

Bethesda lists 125 GB of available storage for both tiers. “Available” means free space at installation time, not the total advertised capacity of the drive. A drive marketed as 125 GB will provide less usable space after formatting and the operating system, so choose a larger compatible SSD if necessary to leave room for updates and other software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official page does not require NVMe, PCIe, or a 1 TB drive. Select the fastest or largest option only when it fits your computer and budget; do not buy an incompatible M.2 module because it is marketed as a gaming SSD. For a secondary drive, make sure the game launcher can access it and that Windows recognizes the volume before starting the installation.

Official troubleshooting checks before replacing hardware

Bethesda’s performance guidance recommends several low-risk checks. Run them in this order so that a configuration problem does not lead to an unnecessary purchase.

  1. Confirm the requirements. Recheck the exact CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX, Windows, storage, and SSD entries against your system.
  2. Use an SSD. If Starfield is installed on an HDD, move or reinstall it on a compatible SSD with at least 125 GB available.
  3. Disable overlays temporarily. Turn off the Steam Overlay and/or Xbox Game Bar, then restart the game to see whether the symptom changes.
  4. Select the correct GPU on a multi-GPU laptop. In Windows graphics settings or the laptop’s graphics-control software, assign Starfield to the primary discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
  5. Retest one change at a time. Record what changed and whether loading, stutter, crashes, or display output improved. Re-enable an overlay after testing if you need its features.

These steps cannot turn below-minimum hardware into a supported configuration, but they can identify an HDD, overlay, or GPU-selection problem without changing components.

What the requirements do not answer

There is no official FPS number in the cited list

Bethesda and the matching Steam entry provide hardware tiers, not a frame-rate benchmark. They do not state an expected 30, 60, or 120 FPS result, nor do they name a test scene, resolution, graphics preset, driver version, or benchmark system. Any FPS figure from another article should be treated as that publisher’s test rather than an official guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no mandated SSD interface or capacity beyond free space

An SSD is required, but the published page does not distinguish SATA from NVMe and does not prescribe a total drive capacity. Compatibility with a particular interface is determined by your PC’s motherboard or laptop design.

The list does not validate every possible upgrade path

The requirements identify parts that Bethesda lists for each tier. They do not tell you whether a specific motherboard accepts a newer CPU, whether a power supply can run a new GPU, or whether a laptop permits component replacement. Those decisions require documentation for your exact machine.

A practical decision framework

If you meet or exceed every minimum item

Install the game on the SSD, update Windows, and perform Bethesda’s overlay and GPU-selection checks if you encounter problems. Do not infer a guaranteed preset or frame rate from the word minimum.

If only storage is below the requirement

Prioritize a compatible SSD with at least 125 GB free after installation. You may not need to replace the CPU, GPU, or RAM simply because the system drive is too slow or too full.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the GPU is below minimum

Check whether the machine can accept a replacement and whether the power supply, case, cooling, and motherboard support it. On a laptop, investigate storage and configuration options first because the GPU may be non-replaceable.

If the CPU is below minimum

Identify the motherboard socket and firmware requirements before selecting a processor. A CPU upgrade can trigger a motherboard, cooler, or memory upgrade, making a complete-system comparison more sensible than buying one part blindly.

If RAM is below 16 GB

Install a compatible kit that brings the system to at least 16 GB, using the motherboard or laptop service specifications. The official list does not require more than 16 GB.

Installation-day checklist

  • Windows is at least version 10 21H1 (10.0.19043) for the minimum tier, or an updated Windows 10/11 installation for the recommended tier.
  • The exact CPU and GPU models have been recorded and compared with the table.
  • The system has 16 GB of RAM.
  • DirectX 12 is present.
  • The target SSD has at least 125 GB free before installation.
  • The laptop is using its primary discrete GPU, if it has multiple adapters.
  • Steam Overlay and Xbox Game Bar have been disabled temporarily if troubleshooting is needed.
  • Important files are backed up before storage or hardware changes.

Bottom line for an upgrade decision

Start with the official floor: Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K, Radeon RX 5700 or GTX 1070 Ti, 16 GB RAM, DirectX 12, Windows 10 21H1, 125 GB free, and an SSD. For the stronger published tier, target a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K with a Radeon RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080. Upgrade the first item that misses the minimum, but verify the rest of the computer before buying. Bethesda’s list supports a compatibility check; it does not promise a specific FPS, resolution, preset, or universal upgrade result.
