Short answer: Starfield is the better fit on Xbox Series X when you already have the console, a suitable television, and want a consistent living-room setup. PC is the more flexible choice when your existing computer meets Bethesda’s requirements and you want to adjust hardware and graphics settings yourself. Neither platform is a universal performance or value winner: Xbox frame-rate choices depend heavily on your display, while PC results depend on the exact components, storage, settings, and local game or subscription prices.
What is actually different between Xbox Series X and PC?
The core game is available on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with release on both platforms on September 6, 2023. Bethesda’s launch announcement also described it as playable through Game Pass on day one. The meaningful differences established by the current official information are not a simple “console versus computer” frame-rate verdict. They are the way Series X exposes frame-rate and visual-priority controls, and the way PC access depends on whether your machine meets the published specifications.
Series X uses a standardized hardware configuration, but it is not limited to one immutable console mode. Bethesda’s May 2024 update added selectable frame-rate targets and Visuals or Performance priorities. A PC, by contrast, can offer more hardware and configuration flexibility, but Bethesda’s requirements are only a compatibility baseline. They do not promise a resolution, graphics preset, or minimum or recommended frame rate.

Frame-rate targets and the display you need
On Series X, Bethesda lists 30, 40, 60, and uncapped frame-rate targets when the console is connected to a VRR display. Bethesda specifically recommends a 120 Hz VRR display and says that, in that setup, the console defaults to 40 fps with full visuals. The 40 fps option therefore is not a general promise for every television or monitor; it is tied to the display capability and the console’s configuration.

If the display does not provide VRR, Bethesda describes 30 or 60 fps targets. The update also discusses a display running at 120 Hz without VRR: the available targets are 30 or 60, and Bethesda warns that choosing 60 on a non-VRR display may produce screen tearing. A 120 Hz refresh rate by itself is not the same as VRR.
These numbers are targets, not independent benchmark results. The official notes do not establish that 60 fps or an uncapped setting is locked or consistently achieved in every scene. Demanding areas can still cause variation, and an uncapped target can rise or fall according to the workload and the display’s limits.
Visuals priority versus Performance priority
The Series X settings let you prioritize either Visuals or Performance while selecting a frame-rate target. Visuals retains the highest resolution and full detail for effects, lighting, and crowds. Performance reduces internal resolution and detail in those elements to favor the selected frame-rate target. Bethesda recommends Performance when the target is 60 fps or higher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNeither priority should be read as a permanently fixed resolution mode. Bethesda says either mode may adjust internal resolution dynamically in demanding scenes. In practical terms, the setting expresses what the game should favor when it has to balance image detail and frame-rate behavior; it is not a guarantee that every frame uses one unchanging resolution.
VSync and tearing
VSync can be switched on or off. With VSync off, Bethesda warns that tearing can occur. With VSync on, the game synchronizes frame delivery with the display and limits the frame rate to the display’s refresh rate. That can make motion appear more consistent, but it also means an uncapped selection is not literally unlimited when synchronization is imposing a refresh-rate ceiling.
How to choose a sensible Series X setup
- Check the display first. Confirm whether the television or monitor supports VRR and whether it can run at 120 Hz. If it lacks VRR, plan around the 30 or 60 options described by Bethesda.
- Enable the display and Xbox features you actually own. A 120 Hz VRR panel only helps if the Xbox is configured to use those capabilities and the connection supports them.
- Choose the target that matches your priority. Use 40 fps when you have the recommended 120 Hz VRR setup and prefer the full-visuals default; consider 60 or uncapped only with realistic expectations about scene-to-scene variation.
- Select Visuals or Performance deliberately. Visuals favors resolution, effects, lighting, and crowd detail. Performance is the setting Bethesda recommends for targets of 60 fps or higher and can lower internal resolution and detail.
- Decide on VSync after checking for tearing. Turn it on when synchronized presentation matters more than allowing the game to run independently of the display refresh; turn it off only if you accept possible tearing.
PC requirements and what they do—and do not—tell you
Bethesda’s current PC support information gives two hardware tiers. The minimum list is a screening tool for whether the game is suitable for the machine you already have. The recommended list is a stronger starting point, not a certified frame-rate or image-quality guarantee.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043) | Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 |
| API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB available on an SSD | 125 GB available on an SSD |
| Internet | Not stated in the minimum list | Broadband internet listed by Bethesda |
Use the list as a compatibility check
- Verify the operating system build. A machine on an older Windows 10 release does not match the stated minimum until it is updated to version 21H1 (10.0.19043) or later.
- Check the actual GPU model. A vaguely similar product name is not enough; compare the installed Radeon or GeForce model with Bethesda’s named minimum or recommended parts.
- Confirm 16 GB of RAM. Both tiers list 16 GB, so extra memory is not presented as a requirement by these specifications.
- Measure free SSD space, not just drive capacity. Bethesda requires 125 GB available and explicitly requires an SSD. A large hard disk with insufficient free space does not satisfy that requirement.
- Install or verify DirectX 12 support. DirectX 12 appears in both lists.
The specifications do not state a target resolution, quality preset, or frame-rate floor. A PC that meets the minimum list may be compatible without delivering the same experience as a machine at the recommended tier, and even two computers with the same named GPU can behave differently because of processors, cooling, driver versions, background workloads, and game settings. Do not turn the requirement table into a promise that a particular component combination will hold 60 fps.

When an SSD purchase is relevant
An SSD is a genuine requirement, and the game needs 125 GB of available space. If your existing computer uses only a hard disk or has less than 125 GB free on its SSD, storage is the specific shortfall to solve. Bethesda’s published information does not name an SSD model, interface, capacity beyond the available-space requirement, or tested product, so the requirements alone cannot justify a particular storage recommendation.
Features, editions, and access routes
Release platforms and optimization
The game launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 6, 2023. The Xbox Ireland store listing describes the Xbox version as optimized for Series X|S and also lists PC. Optimization is a platform designation, not a measured comparison of resolution or frame rate.
Standard Edition and Game Pass
Bethesda’s current purchase page says the Standard Edition is included with Xbox Game Pass. Bethesda’s launch announcement described day-one Game Pass availability. Subscription catalogs and plan terms can change, so check the account region and current plan before treating that statement as a permanent entitlement.
The Xbox Ireland listing says cloud play is included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate on that storefront. That is a regional store statement, not proof that identical cloud-play wording or the same tiers apply in every country. If cloud access matters to your decision, verify the listing for your own region.

Feature parity and mods
The official material covered here does not provide a complete, current, feature-by-feature parity matrix for Xbox and PC. It also does not quantify current PC mod use. The supported comparison is therefore narrower: Series X has the documented frame-rate and visual-priority controls, while PC suitability is governed by the published hardware and storage requirements. Broader claims about exclusive features, identical settings, or mod support should not be inferred from those facts alone.
Value: how to decide without a false universal winner
There is no defensible single value winner from the established facts. Prices, discounts, upgrade costs, and complete regional Game Pass entitlements are not fixed in the information available here. Compare what you already own first; the answer can change completely if a suitable PC or Series X is already in your home.
| If this describes you | Leaning | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a Series X and a 120 Hz VRR display | Xbox Series X | You can use the documented 40 fps target with the recommended display setup and avoid a PC upgrade decision. |
| You own a Series X but have no VRR display | Xbox Series X, with a display caveat | The available targets described by Bethesda are 30 or 60, and 60 on a non-VRR 120 Hz display may tear. |
| You own a PC meeting at least Bethesda’s minimum list and an SSD with 125 GB free | PC | You can evaluate the existing machine without buying a new platform; actual performance still depends on settings and workload. |
| Your PC misses the SSD or free-space requirement | Neither until the shortfall is addressed | The SSD and 125 GB available-space conditions are explicit requirements, not optional upgrades. |
| You would need to buy an entire PC for this game | Compare carefully before choosing | The published requirements do not provide a cost or performance benchmark that can justify a new-PC purchase by themselves. |
| You rely on a subscription | Check your local listing first | Bethesda confirms some Game Pass access, but plan names, cloud terms, and entitlements are regional and changeable. |
A practical ownership-cost checklist
- Record whether you already own the Series X, the PC, or both.
- For Xbox, verify the display’s VRR and 120 Hz capabilities rather than assuming a television’s marketing label guarantees them.
- For PC, compare your exact CPU, GPU, Windows version, RAM, DirectX support, SSD type, and free space with Bethesda’s table.
- Add only the upgrades that solve a documented shortfall. The official requirements do not support buying a new graphics card or computer solely to chase an unstated frame-rate target.
- Check the current local purchase price and the Game Pass plan available in your region immediately before buying.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “60 fps” means a locked 60
Bethesda describes 60 as a selectable target, not a controlled benchmark result. Avoid calling it locked or consistently achieved unless you have a current, matched test for the exact hardware, scene, and settings.

Treating 40 fps as a normal option on every screen
The 40 fps target is tied to a 120 Hz VRR display in Bethesda’s guidance. Without that capability, the documented choices are 30 or 60.
Confusing refresh rate with VRR
A panel can run at 120 Hz and still lack variable refresh. Bethesda specifically warns about possible tearing at 60 on a 120 Hz non-VRR display.
Reading the PC requirements as a performance chart
Minimum and recommended components establish suitability tiers. They do not state the resolution, preset, or frame rate attached to either tier.
Using a hard disk because it has enough capacity
The requirement is an SSD with 125 GB available. Capacity alone does not meet it.
Assuming subscription terms are universal
The Ireland store’s cloud-play wording applies to that storefront. Verify your own country, plan name, catalog, and current entitlement.
Bottom-line decision
Choose Series X when you value a standardized, plug-and-play setup, already own the console, and can use a display that matches the frame-rate option you want. The May 2024 controls make the console more configurable than the old one-mode description suggests: 30, 40, 60, and uncapped targets are available with VRR, while Visuals and Performance priorities let you trade detail for frame-rate preference.
Choose PC when your existing machine meets Bethesda’s requirements, has an SSD with 125 GB free, and you value configuring your own hardware and settings. Do not treat the requirements as a promise of a specific frame rate, and do not buy a new PC solely from that list. For either platform, check the display, hardware you already own, current local pricing, and the Game Pass terms in your region before declaring one option the better value.
