Starfield on PC vs. Xbox: Mod Support, Performance, and Which Version to Choose

Choose PC if your computer meets Bethesda’s published requirements and you want upgradeable hardware plus the Steam Creation Kit workflow. Choose Xbox Series X|S if you want a fixed console configuration and Bethesda’s documented display controls fit your television or monitor. Both platforms support Bethesda’s official Creations, but the available evidence does not establish that console Creations match the entire third-party PC mod ecosystem.

PC vs. Xbox at a glance

The right version depends less on a universal “best” platform than on four practical questions: does your PC meet the requirements, what display do you use with Xbox, which mod workflow do you want, and how will you buy the game? Bethesda has documented requirements for PC, selectable visual and frame-rate priorities for Xbox Series X|S, and official Creations on both platforms. It has not published a like-for-like, same-scene benchmark that proves one platform delivers a permanently higher frame rate, resolution or image quality.

Can your PC run Starfield?

Bethesda’s PC specification article, published August 24, 2023, gives a minimum and a recommended baseline. These are eligibility requirements, not an FPS promise. Actual results vary with the rest of the system, drivers, game updates, graphics settings, background software and the scene being rendered. Bethesda explicitly requires an SSD and 125 GB of available storage in both tiers.

How to check your own system

1. Open Windows’ System Information or Settings to confirm the Windows edition and version.
2. Check the processor model and installed memory, then compare them with the CPU and 16 GB RAM rows above.
3. Identify the discrete GPU model and compare it with the AMD or NVIDIA tier. A model name alone does not establish the frame rate you will obtain.
4. In File Explorer, check the intended drive’s free space. Leave room beyond the stated 125 GB so updates and normal system operation are not forced into a nearly full drive.
5. Confirm that the installation drive is an SSD. Meeting the CPU and GPU rows on a hard disk does not satisfy Bethesda’s storage requirement.

If a component falls below the minimum, treat the PC as an uncertain purchase rather than assuming a lower preset will solve every problem. The published list does not specify how far below the baseline the game will remain usable, and it does not tie either tier to a guaranteed resolution or frame rate.

What Xbox display and performance settings provide

Bethesda’s current support documentation covers Xbox Series X|S display settings. The available frame-rate targets depend on the display connected to the console:

• With a 120 Hz display that supports variable refresh rate (VRR), the selectable targets are 30, 40, 60 or uncapped.
• Without a 120 Hz VRR setup, Bethesda says 30 or 60 can be selected.
• Bethesda warns that selecting 60 on a non-VRR display may produce screen tearing.

These are target choices, not a statement that the game remains locked to the selected number in every location or combat situation. Bethesda also says internal resolution can adjust dynamically when scenes become heavier.

Visuals priority

Visuals priority preserves the highest available resolution and the fullest detail for effects, lighting and crowds. It is the choice for a player who prefers image detail and accepts the performance trade-off Bethesda describes.

Performance priority

Performance priority lowers internal resolution and some effects, lighting and crowd detail to favor a higher frame-rate target. Bethesda recommends this priority when targeting 60 or more.

VSync

VSync can be enabled or disabled. Enabling synchronization can prevent tearing but limits frames to the display’s refresh behavior; disabling it removes that limit but can allow tearing. The best choice depends on the display and whether tearing or a frame-rate limit is more distracting to you.

How the Xbox options were introduced

Bethesda’s May 15, 2024 update introduced the display choices under an “Xbox Series X Display Settings” section and described the new options for Series X at that time. The later November update said the uncapped option had been reintroduced for Series X users. Bethesda’s newer support page uses “Xbox Series X|S” in its heading and summarizes the current selections, so do not read the historical May announcement as proof that every option launched simultaneously on both consoles.

Choosing a mode on your television or monitor

1. Check whether the display actually supports 120 Hz and VRR over the input used by the Xbox. A display advertised as “gaming” is not, by itself, proof that both features are active.
2. If 120 Hz and VRR are available, choose among 30, 40, 60 or uncapped according to whether you prioritize consistency, responsiveness or fewer limits.
3. If they are not available, choose 30 or 60 and watch for tearing when 60 is selected.
4. Select Visuals when higher detail is more important; select Performance when your goal is 60 or above.
5. Change VSync only after deciding whether tearing or a display-synchronized limit is the bigger problem for your setup.

Does Starfield have mods on Xbox?

Yes. Bethesda calls its built-in mod system Creations, and its June 2024 update confirms that official Creations are available through the in-game menu on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Steam Creation Kit is a separate free download for PC creators. Community authors can upload content to the Creations platform; Bethesda also says Verified Creators may charge for Creations and earn royalties.

That answer should not be expanded into “Xbox has every PC mod.” The documented sources establish support for the official Creations system, not identical catalogs across platforms and not compatibility with every external PC distribution, installer, script extender or tool. Before installing anything, check the individual listing for platform compatibility and any stated requirements.

Achievements and Creations

Bethesda’s November update says some Verified Creators’ Creations may be achievement-friendly. The practical rule is to check the status shown in the in-game Creations menu or on the official listing before installing. Achievements do not retroactively unlock on an earlier save simply because you later install an achievement-friendly Creation.

PC mod workflow

On PC, you can browse official Creations in the game and separately download the Creation Kit through Steam. That tool-based workflow is the clearest reason to choose PC for readers who want to create or edit content. It does not mean every community mod uses the Creation Kit or appears in the official catalog, so each mod’s own installation and compatibility instructions still matter.

Xbox mod workflow

1. Open Starfield’s in-game Creations menu.
2. Read the individual Creation’s platform, dependency and achievement information before selecting it.
3. Install only content that is listed as compatible with your Xbox version and the game build you are running.
4. Keep in mind that an achievement status applies according to the listing and does not restore achievements to prior saves automatically.

Which Starfield edition should you buy?

Edition value depends on whether you already own the base game and whether you want the Shattered Space expansion and listed digital or physical extras. Bethesda’s support page describes the contents below; local prices, stock, subscription terms and early-access conditions can change, so verify the current regional listing before checkout.

Use Bethesda’s edition details to confirm what is included in the listing you are considering. If you already have the Standard game through a purchase or an active subscription, compare the price of the Premium Upgrade rather than paying for another base-game copy.

How to choose between PC and Xbox

Choose PC when these statements are true

• Your system meets Bethesda’s minimum requirements, including the 16 GB memory tier, a qualifying GPU, DirectX 12 and an SSD with 125 GB available.
• You want to select or replace individual hardware components over time.
• You plan to use the Steam Creation Kit or a broader PC mod workflow.
• You are comfortable diagnosing driver, operating-system and configuration issues when they occur.

Do not choose PC merely because the word “PC” implies superior performance. A computer below the listed baseline, or one with an unsuitable storage drive, is not automatically a better experience than a console.

Choose Xbox Series X|S when these statements are true

• You prefer a fixed hardware configuration and do not want to compare CPU and GPU specifications.
• Your television or monitor supports the Xbox mode you want, particularly if you expect to use 120 Hz VRR targets.
• You want the straightforward in-game Creations menu rather than installing PC tools.
• Xbox Game Pass availability in your region makes the Standard Edition route useful to you.

Xbox remains a conditional recommendation: the display determines which targets are selectable, and a selected target should not be treated as a guaranteed lock in every scene.

Choose based on a specific Creation

If modding is the deciding factor, identify the exact Creation or mod first. Confirm its platform support, dependencies, installation method and achievement status. “Official Creations on both platforms” is useful information, but it is not evidence that a particular PC-only project will run on Xbox or that both catalogs are identical.

Choose based on ownership cost

For a budget decision, include hardware you already own, any SSD or component replacement your PC would need, the current local game price and the current Game Pass terms. No universal price winner follows from the platform names alone, because those variables differ by country, date and existing equipment.

What the published evidence does—and does not—prove

Bethesda’s May 2024 update explains the reason for adding Xbox controls in this sentence: “We’ve heard from many that you’d like to have more control over the graphic fidelity and performance on Xbox, similar to how PC players can customize their experience.” That is Bethesda Game Studios’ institutional statement, not an independently measured comparison.

Bethesda also stated in its November update that Starfield had reached more than 15 million players. That is a publisher statement rather than an independently audited count, and it does not indicate whether PC or Xbox performs better.

• No definitive current street-price comparison was established.
• No complete, current list of PC graphics settings was established.
• No claim of cross-save or cross-buy behavior is made here.
• No exact resolution, locked-FPS result, load-time result or mod-storage limit is asserted.
• No complete PC/Xbox Creations catalog parity has been demonstrated.

Those limits matter when interpreting online claims that one version is always sharper, faster or more stable. Your hardware, display, settings and installed content can change the result, while Bethesda’s target labels describe intended modes rather than a universal scene-by-scene guarantee.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

For a PC purchase

• Match the CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows and DirectX 12 requirements.
• Reserve at least the stated 125 GB of available SSD storage.
• Check current drivers and the game’s current system notes before installing.
• Decide whether you need the base game, Premium content or only an upgrade.
• Identify any required Creation or external mod and verify its installation method.

For an Xbox purchase

• Confirm that the console listing is for an Xbox Series X or Series S.
• Check the television or monitor’s actual refresh-rate and VRR support.
• Decide whether Visuals or Performance better matches your priority.
• Choose 30, 40, 60 or uncapped only when your display qualifies for that target.
• Check whether the Standard Edition is currently included in your regional Game Pass plan.
• Read a Creation’s platform and achievement notes before installing it.

Bottom line

PC is the better fit for a player with qualifying hardware who values configurable components and the Steam Creation Kit ecosystem. Xbox Series X|S is the better fit for a player who wants fixed hardware and can use Bethesda’s documented display modes on a suitable screen. Both have official Creations; neither platform choice should be sold as proof of identical mod catalogs or a guaranteed frame rate in every scene. Verify the current edition, subscription, display and Creation details at the time you buy.
