Choose Stardew Valley if you want to grow a farm, improve a home, fish, explore, and form relationships in a town. Choose Don’t Starve if you would rather read an unfamiliar wilderness, turn its resources into tools, and stay alive while looking for a way out. For multiplayer, make a separate choice: Stardew Valley offers farm co-op on supported editions, while Don’t Starve Together is a standalone multiplayer game rather than a mode included with the original.

That distinction matters more than a simple “easy versus hard” label. The developers describe different premises and activity loops, but the available official information does not provide a universal difficulty ranking. Your preferred kind of progress—building a settled life or solving a dangerous environment—should decide the purchase.

The short answer

If you want… Start with… Reason
A farm, animals, crops, a home, fishing, and town relationships Stardew Valley Its official description centers on an inherited farm and an open-ended country-life RPG with those activities.
A threatening wilderness where resources, science, and magic are tools for escape Don’t Starve Klei describes the original as a wilderness survival game about Wilson exploiting the environment and its inhabitants.
Co-op built around one shared farm Stardew Valley, on a supported platform The factsheet allows the host to invite one to three other players, with specific platform exclusions.
Multiplayer wilderness survival Don’t Starve Together Klei presents Together as a standalone multiplayer expansion, and the original game is not required.

If you are buying for a group, identify the exact game and platform before paying. “Don’t Starve” and “Don’t Starve Together” are different products, and Stardew Valley co-op is not available on every edition.

What each game is designed to be

Stardew Valley: an open-ended farm and community RPG

ConcernedApe describes Stardew Valley as an open-ended country-life RPG in which you inherit an old farm. The official feature list combines practical projects with optional exploration: you can select from five farm map layouts, raise crops and animals, plant orchards, build machines, fish, cook, craft, enter caves containing monsters and treasure, and develop relationships with residents of Pelican Town. The result is a game organized around choosing what to improve next rather than following one required route.

#1 Best Overall
ConcernedApe Stardew Valley Cooperative Board Game Ages 13+ 1 to 4 Players
  • For 1 to 4 players
  • Ages 13+
  • About 45 minutes per player
  • A cooperative board game
  • Based on the hit video game

Its social layer is part of the premise, not an optional menu detached from the farm. Time spent learning about Pelican Town residents and time spent upgrading production belong to the same overall progression. A player who enjoys setting personal routines—such as alternating field work, fishing, cave trips, and town visits—will find that the feature set supports that style.

The mobile edition is described as containing the full single-player content, with touch controls and redesigned menus. That makes it a way to play the solo game on a phone or tablet, but it does not make mobile equivalent to every other edition: the official factsheet specifically excludes Mobile from co-op.

Don’t Starve: a wilderness problem to solve

Klei’s premise starts with Wilson trapped in a mysterious wilderness. Your objective is to exploit the environment and its inhabitants in order to escape. Klei summarizes the tone in one sentence: “Don’t Starve is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic.” That is a company-authored description from Klei Entertainment, not a quotation attributed to an individual.

The setting and challenge set can change through official expansions. Reign of Giants adds characters, seasons, creatures, biomes, and challenges. Shipwrecked moves the setting to a tropical archipelago. Hamlet places the player near a lost Pigmen town in a tropical jungle. These additions broaden the kinds of environments and problems you can encounter; they do not turn the original into a farm-life simulator.

Goliath The Sims Board Game | Family Strategy Game | Craft Your Story, Collect Matching SIMbols | 2-5 Players, Ages 12+
  • PLAY WITH LIFE, IN REAL LIFE: Dive into the neighborhood, meet iconic Sims, and fulfill your life’s aspirations like never before!
  • A NEW WAY TO PLAY SIMS: Gather up to 5 players as you each craft your own story while collecting matching SIMbols along the way in this family strategy game
  • EVERY GAME, A NEW STORY: Embark on an entirely new journey each time you play while encountering unexpected surprises at every turn — what will your life look like?
  • ICONIC DETAILS FOR FANS: Ideal for play and display, featuring iconic artwork, nostalgic touches, plumbob movers, interaction dice, and a needs tracker familiar to fans
  • MAIN CHARACTERS WANTED: Recommended for 2-5 players, ages 12 and up

The practical appeal is therefore different from Stardew Valley. Instead of beginning with a stable property whose systems you gradually improve, you begin by interpreting a hostile or unfamiliar place. Gathering, crafting, exploration, and responding to danger are central to understanding what the world will allow you to do next.

How the play loops differ

Daily routine versus immediate survival decisions

Stardew Valley gives you a durable base—the inherited farm—and a menu of long-term projects. Crops, animals, orchards, and machines provide reasons to plan a routine. Fishing, cooking, crafting, cave exploration, and relationships offer alternatives when you want a different activity. Progress can be self-directed: you decide whether the next useful improvement is agricultural, domestic, social, or exploratory.

Don’t Starve starts from uncertainty. The official premise emphasizes exploiting what the wilderness and its inhabitants provide, so each expedition is also an information-gathering exercise. You are learning which resources can be turned into tools, which areas are worth entering, and how to respond to threats while pursuing escape. Its core satisfaction comes from converting knowledge of the environment into better survival decisions.

Building a settled life versus adapting to a changing world

In Stardew Valley, the farm and town create a sense of continuity. Your chosen map layout, production buildings, machines, animals, and relationships give the world a persistent home base. The official description leaves the structure open-ended, so there is no single activity that every player must prioritize.

In Don’t Starve, the world itself is the central obstacle and resource. The listed expansions reinforce that design by introducing different seasons, biomes, creatures, and settings. You should expect the game to ask you to adapt your plans to circumstances rather than simply expand one familiar property.

Danger and difficulty: avoid an absolute ranking

It is reasonable to expect a different kind of pressure from the two premises: one emphasizes farm and community development, the other emphasizes survival in a mysterious wilderness. However, the official sources do not quantify difficulty or establish a universal “harder” game. Your experience will depend on whether you find planning a routine or interpreting environmental danger more demanding. Choose by the type of challenge you want, not by an unsupported numerical difficulty claim.

Feature-by-feature comparison

Decision axis Stardew Valley Don’t Starve
Starting premise You inherit an old farm and live in the country. Wilson is trapped in a mysterious wilderness and seeks a way to escape.
Primary progress Develop crops, animals, orchards, machines, a home, and relationships. Exploit environmental resources and inhabitants to survive and pursue escape.
Exploration Caves contain monsters and treasure; fishing is also a listed activity. Exploration is part of learning and using an unfamiliar wilderness.
Crafting and production Machines, cooking, and crafting support farm and home projects. Science, magic, gathering, and crafting support wilderness survival.
Social systems Relationships with Pelican Town residents are an explicit feature. The original premise focuses on the wilderness and its inhabitants rather than a town-life routine.
Setting variety Five farm map layouts are listed in the official feature description. Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked, and Hamlet add distinct challenges and settings.
Multiplayer product Co-op lets a host invite one to three others on supported editions. Use the separate Don’t Starve Together product for multiplayer.
Mobile caveat Full single-player content is described for mobile; co-op is excluded on Mobile. Mobile listings exist, but edition and platform features must be checked for the specific release.

Multiplayer: the distinction that prevents the wrong purchase

Stardew Valley co-op

The official Stardew Valley factsheet says players can invite one to three others to work together on a farm, share resources, and build relationships. This is co-op centered on a shared farm, so it suits a group that wants to divide farm tasks, explore, fish, and participate in the same town-life setting.

That feature is not universal across platforms. The factsheet lists co-op as unavailable on Mobile, PlayStation Vita, and Tesla. If one member of your group is using one of those editions, do not assume that owning the same game creates a compatible multiplayer session. Check the current store listing and the exact edition before purchasing.

Don’t Starve Together

Klei describes Don’t Starve Together as the standalone multiplayer expansion to Don’t Starve. Its listed activities include fighting, farming, building, exploration, gathering, crafting, and cooperation. “Standalone” is important: Klei support states that you do not need to own the original Don’t Starve to play Together. Buying the original alone will not give you the same multiplayer product.

Together is the appropriate choice for a group that wants wilderness survival rather than a shared Pelican Town farm. Treat its platform and edition requirements independently from those of the original game.

Which game fits your priorities?

Choose Stardew Valley for farm-life progression

  • You want a property to improve over time rather than a wilderness to decode.
  • You enjoy balancing crops, animals, orchards, machines, fishing, cooking, crafting, and cave trips.
  • Relationships with named residents and participation in a town are a major reason to play.
  • You prefer an open-ended routine where you can choose which project receives attention next.
  • Your group wants to cooperate on one farm and uses a platform that supports co-op.

Choose Don’t Starve for wilderness survival

  • You want the environment and its inhabitants to be the central problem.
  • You enjoy gathering information, converting resources into tools, and adapting plans as conditions change.
  • The premise of finding a way out of a mysterious wilderness appeals more than inheriting a settled home.
  • You are interested in alternate settings such as the seasonal and biome changes in Reign of Giants, the tropical archipelago in Shipwrecked, or the Pigmen town in Hamlet.

Choose Don’t Starve Together for a survival group

  • Your friends want multiplayer exploration, gathering, crafting, building, fighting, and cooperation.
  • You understand that Together is a separate purchase and that owning the original is not required.
  • Everyone can use a currently supported edition and platform.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Name the activity you want to repeat. If that activity is tending a farm and visiting a town, put Stardew Valley first. If it is scouting, gathering, crafting, and responding to wilderness danger, put Don’t Starve first.
  2. Decide whether multiplayer is essential. For a shared farm, check Stardew Valley co-op support for your platform. For wilderness multiplayer, select Don’t Starve Together, not just the original.
  3. Match the edition to the device. Compare the exact store page, operating system, and edition name. Mobile, Vita, Tesla, console, and PC versions do not share an automatic feature guarantee.
  4. Check the price at checkout. Use the displayed regular prices on the official Stardew Valley press page only as a reference; store discounts, currency conversion, taxes, and regional pricing can change the amount.
  5. Plan for expansions only after choosing the core loop. The Don’t Starve expansions add settings and challenges, while Stardew Valley already presents its farm, town, fishing, caves, cooking, and crafting systems as the base experience.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing the original with Together

The names are similar, but the products serve different use cases. The original Don’t Starve is the wilderness survival game described by Klei; Don’t Starve Together is the standalone multiplayer expansion. Do not buy the original expecting its purchase to unlock Together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every Stardew Valley edition has co-op

Mobile, PlayStation Vita, and Tesla are explicitly excluded from co-op in the official factsheet. A platform check is part of the buying decision, especially when a group is mixing devices.

Using “relaxing” or “hard” as the entire comparison

Those labels describe personal reactions, not an official cross-game measurement. The reliable distinction is structural: Stardew Valley organizes play around a farm and community, while Don’t Starve organizes it around wilderness survival and escape.
