Yes—but the answer depends on the tree’s location and what you do with its stump. A pre-existing wild tree outside your farm has a 20% chance each night to return as a Stage 3 seedling after you remove the stump, even during winter. Farm trees use a different system: mature trees can spread seeds to nearby valid tiles, or you can plant seeds yourself. Regrowth, seedling growth, Hardwood production, and tapped products are related but separate mechanics.

The short answer: location controls regrowth

Stardew Valley has no single “all trees grow back” rule. The game treats a pre-existing tree in a Valley area, a tree planted on your farm, a Mahogany tree, a fruit tree, and seasonal special trees differently.

Where or what kind of tree? What happens after it is cut? What you should do
Pre-existing wild tree outside the farm After the stump is removed, it has a 20% chance per night to return as a Stage 3 seedling. The chance also applies in winter. Remove the stump if you want that particular tree to come back. See the Stardew Valley Wiki trees guide.
Tree on the farm It does not use the outside-farm respawn roll. Mature trees can spread seeds to nearby valid tiles, and players can plant seeds directly. Leave room around mature trees or plant replacement seeds yourself.
Mahogany tree It grows from a Mahogany Seed and follows slower, species-specific growth odds. It is a major Hardwood source. Plant Mahogany Seeds and use fertilizer when speed matters.
Fruit tree or Tea Bush Tree Fertilizer does not speed these plants. Use their ordinary planting and growth rules rather than expecting fertilizer to help.
Ginger Island wild Mahogany tree Wild Mahogany trees on the island can regrow after being chopped for Hardwood. Use the island as a separate, location-specific Hardwood supply.

How an outside-farm tree grows back

The familiar regrowth rule applies to trees that already existed outside your farm. These include common trees in Valley areas that you can chop for Wood, seeds, and other drops. It is not a general rule for every tree you plant.

What happens each night

  1. Chop the tree until only its stump remains.
  2. Use your axe again to remove the stump. A stump left in place prevents this tree from using the outside-farm regrowth rule.
  3. At the next overnight check, the game gives the cleared tree a 20% chance to return as a Stage 3 seedling. This chance is per night, not a guarantee after five nights, and it is not cancelled by winter.
  4. Once the Stage 3 seedling appears, it must grow through the ordinary seedling stages before becoming mature.

Because the 20% roll is repeated nightly, some trees return quickly and others take much longer. The roll creates a new seedling; it does not instantly restore a full-size tree. That distinction explains why an area can look empty for several days after you clear it.

What if you leave the stump?

Leaving the stump is not a way to preserve or accelerate the tree. Under this outside-farm rule, the tree will not regrow while its stump remains. Remove the stump when your goal is another mature wild tree. If your goal is simply to clear a path, removing the stump also finishes the job and lets the tile participate in later regrowth checks.

Can the tree return in winter?

Yes. The stated 20% nightly respawn chance for a cleared, pre-existing outside-farm tree includes winter. Winter affects what happens after a seedling exists: an ordinary unfertilized seedling does not advance during winter, so a tree that respawns then may wait until spring to continue growing. Fertilized wild seedlings can grow in winter, subject to the species rules described below. The distinction is important: respawn can occur in winter even when ordinary growth pauses.

Can wild trees plant their own replacements?

The outside-farm tree rules do not describe those trees spontaneously spreading planted seeds. If you want a deliberate grove outside the farm, plant eligible seeds in untilled ground yourself. This is separate from the 20% chance that a particular pre-existing tree returns after its stump is removed.

How farm trees replace themselves

Farm trees use seed spread rather than the outside-farm stump-respawn mechanic. A mature farm tree, excluding a stump, has a 15% chance each night to attempt to plant a seed nearby. The attempt succeeds only when the selected tile is empty and valid for a seed. You can also plant tree seeds directly, which is more reliable than waiting for a random spread attempt.

Give spreading trees usable space

A mature tree can attempt to seed nearby, but the attempt does not override objects, buildings, terrain restrictions, or other invalid tile conditions. If you want a self-renewing woodlot, keep open ground around the trees and remove debris that blocks planting. A seedling will not grow beyond Stage 4 while a mature tree occupies any of its eight adjacent tiles. This spacing rule means a dense-looking grove can stall even when seeds are present.

A practical farm layout

  • Plant replacement seeds in rows when you need predictable harvesting dates.
  • Leave a clear ring around each seedling until it reaches maturity; avoid placing mature trees immediately adjacent to young trees.
  • Use a separate, open section for trees intended for chopping and another section for tapped trees.
  • Inspect the ground around mature trees after overnight growth so you can clear blocked tiles before the next seed-spread attempt.

Farm seed spread is therefore a renewable opportunity, not a promise that every chopped farm tree will reappear in the same spot. If one exact tree location matters, plant a seed on that tile yourself.

How long trees take to mature

For ordinary non-Mahogany wild trees, an unfertilized seedling has a 20% chance each night to advance to the next growth stage. Stage 4 takes twice as long as the earlier transitions. The Stardew Valley Wiki reports a median of 24 days from seed to maturity, with about 90% maturing within 38 days and 99% within 55 days, excluding winter. Those are probability-based estimates, not a fixed calendar timer; two seeds planted on the same day can mature on different dates. See the Trees page for the documented growth rules.

Why a seedling appears stuck

  • Winter pause: an ordinary unfertilized seedling does not advance during winter.
  • Stage 4 spacing: a mature tree in one of the eight adjacent tiles prevents a seedling from growing beyond Stage 4.
  • Blocked tile: farm seed spread only works on a valid empty tile.
  • Random timing: the 20% nightly roll is a chance, so a run of unsuccessful nights is possible.

Check the eight surrounding tiles first, then check the season and whether fertilizer was actually applied to the seed or seedling.

Tree Fertilizer: faster growth and winter exceptions

Tree Fertilizer is applied to a planted seed or an existing seedling; it is not applied to an empty tile. It can be crafted at Foraging Level 7. For most fertilized wild trees, the seedling advances one stage per night, except Stage 4, which takes two days. A fertilized non-Mahogany seed reaches maturity in five days under these rules. Fertilizer also allows these wild seedlings to grow during winter. The Tree Fertilizer documentation lists the application and species limitations.

What fertilizer does not do

  • It does not speed Fruit Trees.
  • It does not speed Tea Bushes.
  • It does not turn the outside-farm 20% respawn roll into an instant mature tree. A wild tree must first respawn as a seedling; fertilizer affects the seedling’s subsequent growth.

For a planned woodlot, apply fertilizer after planting the seed. For a wild tree that has not yet returned, there is nothing to fertilize until the Stage 3 seedling appears.

Species-specific growth and Hardwood rules

Common wild trees

Ordinary non-Mahogany wild trees use the 20% nightly unfertilized advancement chance described above. With fertilizer, they normally advance one stage per night, with the two-day Stage 4 exception. These are the most predictable trees for a fast Wood-producing grove once you have seeds and fertilizer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mahogany trees

Mahogany trees grow from Mahogany Seeds and are valuable because chopping one yields 8–13 Hardwood. A tapper placed on a Mahogany tree produces Sap. Mahogany growth is slower and more variable than ordinary wild-tree growth: an unfertilized Mahogany seed has a 15% nightly chance to advance, while a fertilized seed has a 60% nightly chance, including in winter. The documented typical times are 26 ± 12 days unfertilized and 7 ± 2 days fertilized. Species details are listed on the Mahogany Tree page.

For a Mahogany plantation, fertilizer is especially useful when you need Hardwood on a schedule. It does not remove the need for a valid planted tile or guarantee that every tree finishes on the same day.

Mystic trees

Mystic trees have their own growth behavior. Even when fertilized, their nightly advancement chance is 30%, lower than the 60% fertilized chance documented for Mahogany. Do not apply the five-day fertilized non-Mahogany expectation to Mystic trees.

Fruit trees and Tea Bushes

Tree Fertilizer does not speed Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes. Treat those plants as separate systems: choose a valid location, plant them according to their normal rules, and do not spend Tree Fertilizer expecting an earlier harvest.

Getting Hardwood when ordinary tree regrowth is not enough

Hardwood has several dependable sources, so waiting for one outside-farm tree to return is not your only option.

Large Stumps and Large Logs

Large Stumps and Large Logs provide Hardwood when you have the axe upgrade required to cut them. The Hardwood guide documents these respawning locations:

  • Six Large Stumps respawn daily in the Secret Woods.
  • Eight Large Stumps respawn daily on the left side of the Forest Farm map.
  • One Large Stump respawns daily in the top-left corner of the Four Corners farm map.

These daily stump sources are distinct from the 20% nightly return of a cleared ordinary tree. They are useful when you need a regular Hardwood route rather than a mature tree for tapping or Wood production.

Mahogany plantations

Plant Mahogany Seeds when you want a renewable source that you control. Once mature, each Mahogany tree can yield 8–13 Hardwood when chopped. Fertilizer improves the odds and shortens the expected wait, especially during winter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ginger Island

Wild Mahogany trees on Ginger Island can regrow after being chopped for Hardwood. Treat this as a location-specific island supply; it is not evidence that every farm or Valley tree follows the same respawn behavior.

Tappers, products, and seasonal exceptions

A mature tree can be tapped for a species-specific product. Maple trees produce Maple Syrup, Oak trees produce Oak Resin, and Pine trees produce Pine Tar. Common tree tappers continue producing during winter. The species pages for Tappers, Maple, Oak, and Pine document these outputs and seasonal behavior.

Special seasonal trees are exceptions. Mushroom Trees and Type 3 Green Rain Trees turn into stumps in winter and produce nothing during that season. Their winter appearance should not be interpreted as ordinary tree death or as proof that every tapped tree stops producing.

Choosing the right approach for your goal

Your goal Best approach Key constraint
Restore a specific wild Valley tree Cut it, remove the stump, and wait for the 20% nightly Stage 3 respawn roll. Respawn is random; subsequent unfertilized growth pauses in winter.
Create a predictable farm woodlot Plant seeds yourself in an open layout; use Tree Fertilizer for faster wild-tree growth. Farm trees do not use the outside-farm stump rule, and adjacent mature trees can stop Stage 4 growth.
Harvest Hardwood repeatedly Use the Secret Woods or map-specific Large Stumps, plus a Mahogany plantation. Large Stumps require the appropriate axe; Mahogany has slower species-specific growth.
Produce Maple Syrup, Oak Resin, or Pine Tar Keep mature Maple, Oak, or Pine trees and attach tappers. Do not chop tapped trees; common tree tappers continue through winter.
Grow trees during winter Apply Tree Fertilizer to eligible seeds or seedlings. Fertilizer does not speed Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes, and Mystic/Mahogany odds differ.

Troubleshooting: why your tree has not returned or matured

“I chopped it, but nothing came back.”

Confirm that the tree was a pre-existing tree outside the farm and that you removed the stump. The 20% figure is a nightly chance, not a deadline. If the tree did return as a seedling, it still needs time to mature.

“The seedling stopped at Stage 4.”

Look at all eight adjacent tiles for a mature tree. A mature neighbor blocks growth beyond Stage 4. Clear the obstruction or move your planting plan before expecting further advancement.

“My tree did not grow in winter.”

If it is an ordinary unfertilized seedling, winter pauses growth. Apply Tree Fertilizer to an eligible planted seed or seedling before relying on winter growth. Remember that winter does not remove the outside-farm respawn chance; it only affects ordinary seedling advancement.

“I fertilized the tree and saw no benefit.”

Check that you applied fertilizer to the seed or seedling rather than an empty tile, and check the species. Fruit Trees and Tea Bushes are not sped up. Mystic and Mahogany trees also use different probabilities from ordinary wild trees.

“I need Hardwood now.”

Use the respawning Large Stumps in the Secret Woods or the applicable farm map, then establish Mahogany trees for a controlled supply. A single cleared wild tree is a poor emergency source because its return and later growth are both variable.

A simple forestry plan

  1. Decide the output: Wood, Hardwood, a tapped product, or a restored wild tree.
  2. Choose the location: outside-farm Valley areas for stump-based wild regrowth, your farm for planted groves, or Ginger Island for its specific wild Mahogany supply.
  3. Clear correctly: remove outside-farm stumps when you want those trees to return; leave mature tapped trees standing.
  4. Plant deliberately: place seeds on valid open tiles and leave the eight neighboring tiles clear enough for growth.
  5. Use fertilizer selectively: apply it to eligible seeds or seedlings when speed or winter growth matters, not to empty tiles, Fruit Trees, or Tea Bushes.
  6. Reserve Hardwood routes: check the Secret Woods and map-specific Large Stumps instead of depending entirely on random tree regrowth.
  7. Recheck after each night: look for new farm seedlings, blocked Stage 4 trees, and seasonal changes to special trees.

With those distinctions, “Do trees regrow?” becomes a practical decision: clear and stump-remove a wild Valley tree for a chance at its return, plant and space farm trees for renewable production, fertilize eligible seedlings when timing matters, and use the dedicated stump and Mahogany systems when Hardwood is the priority.
