For most new players, start with StarCraft II. Blizzard presents it as free to play, including the Wings of Liberty campaign and multiplayer access, so you can try the series without committing to a purchase. Ranked play has an unlock condition, and most co-op commanders have a level-five progression cap, but those limits do not prevent a meaningful first look.
Choose StarCraft: Remastered instead if your priority is playing the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns in their original order, with upgraded graphics, audio, and modern resolution support. Its official page presents a purchase option, but the current regional price is not established here.
Quick answer: which one should you choose?
Choose StarCraft II when you want the lowest-friction way to test the series, try modern online multiplayer, or begin with the sequel’s opening campaign. Blizzard’s free-to-play explanation says that Wings of Liberty, multiplayer, and co-op access are included at no cost. The same explanation says ranked multiplayer becomes permanently available after you earn ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI, while most co-op commanders can be played only to level five unless you use one of the commanders Blizzard identifies as completely free.
Choose StarCraft: Remastered when the original story is the reason you are interested. It combines the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns and updates their visuals, audio, and supported resolutions. It is the better fit for a newcomer who wants to experience the beginning of the series before moving to the sequel.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is an access-based recommendation, not a claim that StarCraft II is easier. Both are real-time strategy games with demanding controls, economy management, scouting, and combat decisions. The practical difference is that StarCraft II lets most people begin without buying anything, while Remastered is the purpose-built route to the original campaign experience.

What StarCraft II’s free-to-play offer actually includes
Wings of Liberty is the free campaign starting point
Blizzard’s 2017 explanation says the entire first campaign in the StarCraft II single-player story is free. That campaign is Wings of Liberty. It gives a new player a substantial single-player introduction without requiring an initial purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not interpret that statement as saying every StarCraft II campaign is permanently free. The cited announcement establishes the first campaign and the multiplayer structure, but it does not establish current prices or entitlements for later campaigns. If you want the rest of the StarCraft II story, check the live regional store before purchasing or recommending additional content.
Multiplayer is available, but ranked has a clear gate
The free-to-play explanation includes StarCraft II multiplayer. Ranked play is not immediately open to a brand-new account under the rule Blizzard described: you must earn ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI. Once earned, the ranked unlock is permanent.
A First Win of the Day is an account progression condition, not a requirement to win ten ranked matches. You can work toward it through the unranked or computer-opponent modes Blizzard specifies. The exact client labels and presentation can change, so follow the current in-game objective rather than relying on an old menu screenshot.
Co-op access is broad, but progression is not unlimited for most commanders
Blizzard’s quoted explanation says that every Co-op Commander is available for free, but its accompanying explanation distinguishes access from progression. Most commanders have a level-five cap on the free offering. Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis are identified as remaining completely free rather than stopping at that cap.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

This matters if co-op is your main reason for choosing StarCraft II. You can sample the mode and its commanders without paying up front, but a player who wants unrestricted leveling for most commanders should verify the current entitlement rules in the client. The 2017 article is evidence of the announced structure, not a guarantee that every present-day store label or progression rule is unchanged.
Campaign choice: original story or sequel opening?
StarCraft: Remastered starts at the beginning
Remastered is the choice for a player who wants the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns. That makes it the chronological starting point for the franchise’s story. The official page describes the original game and expansion with upgraded visuals, upgraded audio, and support for broader resolutions than the original presentation.
Starting here gives you the context of the first game before you encounter StarCraft II’s continuation. It also means accepting an older game design: the source confirms the visual and audio upgrades, but it does not claim that Remastered changes the underlying campaign structure into a modern tutorial experience.
StarCraft II starts with Wings of Liberty
Wings of Liberty is the free campaign starting point described in Blizzard’s StarCraft II announcement. It begins the sequel’s story rather than retelling the original campaign. A newcomer can therefore understand StarCraft II as its own entry point, but some story and faction context comes from the earlier game.

If narrative order is more important than convenience, play Remastered first and then move to StarCraft II.
How to decide when story order matters
- Choose Remastered first if you want the original campaign and Brood War specifically, or you prefer to follow the franchise from its first story.
- Choose StarCraft II first if you want to start playing immediately, sample multiplayer, or avoid paying before you know whether the series suits you.
- Play both in release-story order if you have the time: Remastered for the original campaigns, followed by Wings of Liberty and the later StarCraft II content after checking current entitlements.
Multiplayer and co-op: what changes between the games?
StarCraft II is the easier online trial
StarCraft II’s free-to-play structure is built around letting a new account reach multiplayer without an upfront purchase. You can use unranked or Versus AI games while working toward the ten First Wins of the Day needed for permanent ranked access. That gives you a progression path from practice to competitive play.
Co-op adds a less competitive option. The free offering lets you try commanders, with the level-five limitation for most commanders described above. This is useful if you want cooperative missions rather than direct head-to-head matches, but it is not the same as unlimited progression for every commander.

Remastered emphasizes the original competitive experience
The Remastered page describes online head-to-head or team play after the campaign. It is therefore appropriate for players who want the original game’s competitive rules and atmosphere with refreshed presentation. The cited page does not state a ranked unlock condition comparable to StarCraft II’s ten daily wins, so do not assume that the two games use identical progression systems.
Remastered is also not the free trial route identified in Blizzard’s StarCraft II announcement. Its official page presents a purchase action, and the current regional price should be checked before you commit.
Presentation, interface, and the feel of an older game
What Remastered improves
Remastered’s confirmed upgrades are visual and acoustic: Blizzard highlights upgraded graphics, upgraded audio, and broader supported resolutions. Those changes make the original game easier to display on modern screens without replacing its identity.
The upgrade should not be confused with a remake. The available description calls it the original game and expansion with presentation improvements. It does not promise modernized campaign design, redesigned missions, or a new control model. Select it because you want the original experience presented more cleanly, not because you expect it to play exactly like StarCraft II.
What StarCraft II offers as a first interface
StarCraft II is the newer game in this comparison and is the practical choice for a player who wants to enter through the sequel’s current multiplayer and co-op structure. The evidence supports its access model, not a universal claim that its interface or learning curve is easier. Expect to spend time learning production, supply management, scouting, unit control, and build timing whichever game you select.

Internet, hardware, and installation checks
StarCraft II requires an active internet connection
Blizzard Support’s surfaced StarCraft II System Requirements result states that both single-player and multiplayer modes require an active internet connection. That is an important distinction for anyone expecting to play the campaign completely offline.
The same support material warns that requirements may change over time. Before installing, open the current support page and compare its Windows or Mac specifications with your computer. Do not rely on an old hardware list copied into a forum or video description.

Check Remastered’s current requirements and storefront region
The cited Remastered material confirms the product and its presentation features but does not provide a current price or a complete, matching hardware table for this comparison. Check the official page and your regional storefront for the supported operating system, download size, account requirements, and current price before purchasing.
A practical pre-install checklist
- Confirm that your computer matches the current requirements for the specific game and operating system.
- Verify that you have a stable internet connection for StarCraft II, including its single-player campaign.
- Check the storefront region and currency before assuming a price quoted elsewhere applies to you.
- Confirm which campaigns are included in the account entitlement you are about to use.
- Update graphics drivers and leave enough storage for the game and any required updates.
Choose by the kind of player you are
You want to spend nothing before deciding
Start with StarCraft II. Blizzard labels it free to play, and Wings of Liberty plus multiplayer access make it a substantial trial rather than a short demonstration. You can also sample co-op before deciding whether the level-five limit for most commanders matters to you.

You care most about the original campaign
Start with StarCraft: Remastered. It contains the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns and updates their presentation. This is the direct match for a player who wants the story that established the series.
You want ranked competition eventually
StarCraft II offers a clearly documented route: earn ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI, then ranked play unlocks permanently under Blizzard’s described rule. Remastered’s official page confirms online head-to-head and team play but does not establish an equivalent ranked requirement.
You prefer cooperative missions
Try StarCraft II first because the free-to-play explanation includes co-op. Treat the commander level-five cap as a real boundary for most commanders, while Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis are described as fully free.
You want both games eventually
Use a two-stage plan: begin with StarCraft II to test the mechanics and online modes at no initial cost, then buy Remastered if you want the original campaigns and upgraded presentation. Alternatively, begin with Remastered for chronological story order and use StarCraft II for the sequel and its free multiplayer structure.
Step-by-step: starting with StarCraft II
- Check your system first. Open Blizzard’s current StarCraft II System Requirements page. Confirm the current Windows or Mac requirements and note that an active internet connection is required for single-player and multiplayer.
- Use the current official StarCraft II listing. Blizzard’s free-to-play explanation is historical, from 2017, so use the live account and storefront screens to confirm what is currently included in your region.
- Begin with Wings of Liberty. It is the first campaign identified in Blizzard’s free offering. This gives you a structured single-player introduction before you decide whether to focus on online modes.
- Try Versus AI or Unranked. These are the modes Blizzard specifies for earning First Wins of the Day toward the ranked unlock. Use them to learn the interface and basic production without treating early losses as a verdict on the whole game.
- Track the ranked condition. Earn ten First Wins of the Day in the qualifying modes. The described reward is a permanent ranked unlock, not merely a temporary trial.
- Test co-op before spending money. Play the available commanders and note where most commanders stop at level five. If you want unlimited progression for a particular commander, verify the current entitlement rather than assuming the free trial includes it.
Step-by-step: starting with StarCraft: Remastered
- Confirm that the original campaigns are your priority. Remastered is the route to the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns, not simply an alternative launcher for Wings of Liberty.
- Open the official product page. The StarCraft: Remastered page presents the product and a Buy Now action. Check your regional storefront for the current price and purchase terms.
- Review compatibility before buying. The available product material confirms broader supported resolutions and presentation upgrades, but you should still verify the current operating-system and hardware requirements for your computer.
- Play the original campaign before Brood War. That follows the order in which the story is presented in the combined product and gives you the franchise’s starting context.
- Use online head-to-head or team play after the campaign. Blizzard’s page describes those online modes. Check the live client for current matchmaking, account, and connection requirements.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: assuming “free to play” means every campaign is free
The documented free campaign is Wings of Liberty. The cited 2017 announcement does not establish current pricing or entitlement for later StarCraft II campaigns. Check the live storefront before promising access to the rest of the saga.

Mistake: confusing co-op access with unlimited commander leveling
Blizzard’s wording says every Co-op Commander is available for free, while the explanation says most commanders have a level-five cap and names Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis as completely free. Those statements describe different aspects of access. A commander being selectable does not necessarily mean unlimited progression is included.
Mistake: expecting ranked play immediately
Under Blizzard’s described rule, ranked multiplayer requires ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI. If ranked is unavailable on a new account, use the qualifying modes and follow the current in-client progress indicator.
Mistake: expecting Remastered to be a modern remake
Remastered upgrades graphics, audio, and supported resolutions. The official description does not promise redesigned missions or a wholly modernized game. Buy it for the original StarCraft and Brood War experience with refreshed presentation.
Mistake: relying on old requirements or prices
Blizzard says requirements can change, and the available material does not verify a current Remastered price. Check the current support page and regional storefront immediately before installation or purchase.
A sensible first-session plan
If you are undecided, make the choice reversible. Start StarCraft II, play enough of Wings of Liberty to learn whether the camera, production cycle, and real-time decision-making appeal to you, then try an AI or unranked match. If you enjoy the underlying strategy but want the original story, move to Remastered. If the sequel’s online and co-op structure is what keeps you playing, continue with StarCraft II and treat the ranked unlock as a progression goal rather than an entry barrier.
If story continuity is the deciding factor, reverse that order: play the original StarCraft and Brood War in Remastered, then begin StarCraft II with Wings of Liberty. The two routes answer different questions, so neither is universally correct; the right first game depends on whether your first priority is cost-free access or the franchise’s original campaign.
