StarCraft II and StarCraft: Remastered have different system requirements. Check the table for the game and operating system you actually use: Blizzard lists 30 GB of storage for StarCraft II and 8 GB for Remastered. Both list 1024 × 768 as the minimum display resolution and require broadband internet. StarCraft II additionally states that both multiplayer and single-player modes need an active internet connection.

The published hardware lists are compatibility baselines, not modern frame-rate guarantees. Blizzard warns that requirements can change, and the examples are several years old. Use them to identify obvious incompatibilities, not as a current graphics-card buying guide.

Which StarCraft game are you checking?

“StarCraft system requirements” can mean two separate products. StarCraft II is the modern 3D sequel, while StarCraft: Remastered is the updated version of the original game. Their operating-system, storage and graphics tables should not be merged.

Game Minimum storage Minimum resolution Internet requirement
StarCraft II 30 GB available 1024 × 768 Broadband internet; multiplayer and single-player both require an active connection
StarCraft: Remastered 8 GB available 1024 × 768 Broadband internet

These values come from Blizzard’s published requirements pages. The pages are dated references and may be revised, so check the current Blizzard Support entry for your edition before installing on a newly released operating system.

StarCraft II system requirements

Blizzard publishes separate Windows and Mac rows, each with minimum and recommended hardware. The following tables reproduce those values as compatibility references.

Windows requirements

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 Windows 10 64-bit
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Intel Core i5, AMD FX Series or better
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, Intel HD Graphics 3000 or better NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650, AMD Radeon HD 7790 or better
Memory 2 GB RAM 4 GB RAM
Storage 30 GB available 30 GB available
Display and network 1024 × 768 minimum; broadband internet Same published display and network conditions

Blizzard’s wording is important for connectivity: “StarCraft II multiplayer and single player modes require an active Internet connection.” Meeting the processor and graphics rows does not remove that requirement.

Mac requirements

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system OS X 10.13 macOS 10.15
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo Intel Core i5 or better
Graphics GeForce GT 640M or Radeon HD 4670 GeForce GTX 775M, Radeon R9 M290X or better
Memory 4 GB RAM 8 GB RAM
Storage 30 GB available 30 GB available
Display and network 1024 × 768 minimum; broadband internet Same published display and network conditions

These Mac entries describe the versions and GPUs Blizzard lists, not guaranteed support on current macOS releases or newer Apple hardware. A Mac that exceeds the old specification can still encounter compatibility issues if its operating system is outside the supported range.

StarCraft: Remastered system requirements

Remastered uses a lighter baseline than StarCraft II and needs substantially less disk space. It also has a separate optional graphics threshold for its real-time lighting feature.

Windows requirements

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 Windows 10 64-bit
Processor Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4 GHz) or AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (2.6 GHz) or better
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 6800 with 256 MB or ATI Radeon X1600 Pro with 256 MB or better GeForce 8800 GT with 512 MB or Radeon HD 4850 with 512 MB or better

Memory 2 GB RAM 4 GB RAM
Storage 8 GB available 8 GB available
Display and input 1024 × 768 minimum; broadband internet; keyboard and mouse Same published display and input conditions

Blizzard also says that FileVault options and case-sensitive formatted volumes are unsupported for Blizzard game installation on the Remastered Mac configuration. That is an installation limitation, separate from CPU, GPU and memory capacity.

What the Remastered real-time-lighting requirement actually means

Blizzard’s note is feature-specific: “Use of the real-time lighting feature in StarCraft: Remastered requires a graphics card with at least 2GB of Dedicated VRAM, and at least 3GB of system RAM.” The 2 GB dedicated-VRAM and 3 GB system-RAM figures are therefore not blanket minimums for playing Remastered.

If your computer falls below either threshold, the relevant question is whether you are trying to use real-time lighting. Do not assume that buying hardware is necessary for the base game solely because it does not meet that optional-feature threshold. A Blizzard support forum reply from 2019 explained that the feature had been locked below the design requirement after reports of performance and display problems; that is historical support context, not a current benchmark.

Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void - Standard Edition
  • This is a standalone product. It does not require any other version of StarCraft II to play
  • Internet Connection Required
  • Battle.net registration and Battle.net Desktop Application required

Blizzard announced a 4K UHD graphics update for Remastered in 2017. That describes the product’s graphics capability, not a requirement for a 4K monitor or proof that every system will deliver a particular frame rate at 4K.

Can my PC run StarCraft?

Use this decision sequence before changing hardware:

  1. Identify the edition. Confirm whether the launcher entry is StarCraft II or StarCraft: Remastered. The storage and graphics rows are different.
  2. Identify the operating system. Compare a Windows installation with the Windows table, or a Mac installation with the Mac table. Do not substitute the other platform’s GPU row.
  3. Check free storage. Reserve at least 30 GB for StarCraft II or 8 GB for Remastered, as listed by Blizzard. Leave additional working space for operating-system updates and other applications rather than treating the published figure as a recommended free-space target.
  4. Check CPU, GPU and RAM together. A system can miss the table because of one component even when the others exceed it. Record the exact GPU model and, for Remastered lighting, its dedicated VRAM amount.
  5. Verify the display and connection. Both pages list 1024 × 768 as the minimum resolution and broadband internet. StarCraft II requires an active connection for both single-player and multiplayer.
  6. For Remastered, separate base play from lighting. If the only mismatch is below 2 GB dedicated VRAM or below 3 GB system RAM, determine whether the symptom appears when real-time lighting is enabled.

Passing a minimum row means the machine matches Blizzard’s published baseline; it does not promise a measured frame rate, a particular resolution above 1024 × 768, or flawless behavior on a newer operating-system release.

Best settings for StarCraft II and Remastered smooth gameplay

The supplied Blizzard documentation establishes where to change VSync, but it does not declare that one position is universally smoother. Treat the setting as a controlled comparison on your own display.

Toggle VSync in StarCraft: Remastered

  1. Launch StarCraft: Remastered.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Select Video.
  4. Check or uncheck Enable Vertical Sync.

Play the same type of scene after each change and keep the position that behaves better on your monitor. The documentation does not establish a universal “on” or “off” recommendation.

Toggle VSync in StarCraft II

  1. Launch StarCraft II.
  2. Open Menu.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Select Graphics.
  5. Check or uncheck Vertical Sync.

The menu path differs from Remastered, so instructions for one edition should not be applied to the other. Blizzard provides the toggle location, not a benchmarked best setting.

Use a measured, reversible approach

  • Change one setting at a time so you can associate a change with a symptom.
  • Compare the same map, replay or menu scene rather than judging two unrelated situations.
  • Record whether the problem is visible tearing, uneven motion, input feel, crashes or installation failure; these are different failure categories.
  • Restore the previous value if the change does not help. Neither requirements page supplies a universal frame-rate target.

Troubleshooting when the requirements appear to match

A matching table does not diagnose every problem. Start with the narrowest explanation supported by the symptoms.

Remastered lighting will not work

Check the dedicated VRAM figure on the graphics card and total system RAM. The documented threshold for real-time lighting is at least 2 GB of dedicated VRAM and at least 3 GB of system RAM. If either value is lower, the feature-specific requirement is not met; this does not by itself prove that ordinary Remastered play is unsupported.

Motion looks worse after changing VSync

Return to the documented menu and compare the opposite VSync state. Remastered uses Options > Video; StarCraft II uses Menu > Options > Graphics. Since Blizzard does not identify one setting as best for every system, judge the result on your own display instead of applying a blanket rule.

Installation fails on a Mac

For Remastered, check whether FileVault options or a case-sensitive formatted volume is involved; Blizzard lists those configurations as unsupported for installation. Also verify that the Mac is being compared with the Mac table, not the Windows table.

The game meets the table but still has a problem

Do not infer a missing driver fix, registry edit or background-app procedure from the requirements page. Blizzard’s Remastered support landing page points to a “Starcraft Performance Issues” article, but the detailed steps are not established here. Use Blizzard’s current support documentation for the next diagnostic instructions rather than treating the old hardware table as a complete troubleshooting guide.

Should you upgrade your hardware?

The published examples are legacy models, and the sources provide no current-generation GPU recommendations, benchmark results, average frame rates or tested resolution comparisons. They therefore cannot justify a universal instruction to buy a new graphics card, SSD, monitor or computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A graphics card with at least 2 GB of dedicated VRAM is a narrowly relevant specification only when your goal is Remastered real-time lighting and your existing card lacks that threshold. Before any purchase, verify the card’s actual dedicated memory, operating-system compatibility and the rest of the system against the edition you play. For all other decisions, first establish whether the issue is storage, connectivity, installation format, feature-specific VRAM or a VSync behavior.

Bottom line

Check StarCraft II and StarCraft: Remastered separately, and compare Windows or Mac against the matching Blizzard table. StarCraft II lists 30 GB storage; Remastered lists 8 GB. Both list 1024 × 768 and broadband internet, while StarCraft II requires an active connection even for single-player. Remastered’s 2 GB dedicated-VRAM and 3 GB system-RAM figures apply to real-time lighting, not to every aspect of the game. Use each edition’s documented VSync path as an experiment, and treat the dated requirements as compatibility references rather than performance guarantees.
