For U.S. Starbucks Rewards members, neither ordering in the app nor ordering at the counter automatically earns more Stars. Under the program in effect from March 10, 2026, your Rewards status level sets the base earn rate. A qualifying mobile order and a qualifying in-store purchase can earn at the same level-based rate.
The practical choice is convenience and payment: use the app for order-ahead customization and saved payment details; order in store when you want to speak with a barista or use a tender that works better at the register. If you order in store, scan your member barcode before paying so the purchase can qualify.
What actually determines your Starbucks Stars rate?
Starbucks changed the U.S. Rewards earning structure on March 10, 2026. Your status level—not whether you ordered through the app or at the register, and not simply whether you used a Starbucks Card—determines the published base rate.

Starbucks’ current U.S. terms state: “Green Level members earn 1 Star for each One Dollar ($1.00) spent; Gold Level members earn 1.2 Stars for each One Dollar ($1.00) spent; and Reserve Level members earn 1.7 Stars for each One Dollar ($1.00) spent.” The figures apply to qualifying purchases under the applicable terms, not automatically to every charge made at every location.

As a simple illustration of the published rates, $10 of eligible spend corresponds to 10 Stars for Green, 12 Stars for Gold, or 17 Stars for Reserve. The eligible amount, exclusions, rounding and any promotional rules in effect for your account control the Stars that actually post.
Does ordering in the app earn more Stars than ordering in store?
No. The current U.S. rules cover qualifying mobile orders and qualifying in-store purchases when the member is identified correctly. The channel itself is not a multiplier.
An app order can earn at your applicable level rate when it is a qualifying mobile transaction. An in-store purchase can earn at that same rate when you scan the Starbucks Rewards barcode before paying and the location supports that earning route.

How to earn Stars with a Starbucks app order
Place and customize the order
- Open the Starbucks app and choose a participating store that offers mobile ordering.
- Select your drinks or food, then set the available size, milk, syrup, toppings and other options.
- Review the pickup location and the order details before submitting. Mobile ordering is available only where the selected store offers it.
- Choose an available in-app payment method and complete the order.
The U.S. App Store listing describes order placement, drink customization, saved favorite stores, saved payment methods and scanning to pay in stores. Those features make the app useful when you want to configure an order before reaching the store or keep payment information in one place.
Use an eligible payment method
Current U.S. materials describe several qualifying patterns, including paying with a Starbucks Card in the app or paying directly with a linked payment method. Starbucks also says PayPal can be linked in the app to load a Starbucks Card digitally or pay directly, either for an in-store purchase or an order placed ahead. The payment choices displayed in your account and at your selected store control what you can use.
An order made through an excluded checkout path, a guest flow, a delivery transaction or a beta feature may not earn Stars. Check the applicable terms and the offer details shown in your account before assuming that a particular order will qualify.
How to earn Stars when ordering at the store
The reliable sequence
- Open the Starbucks app and display your Rewards member barcode.
- Ask the barista to scan the barcode before you pay.
- Pay with a supported tender, such as cash, a credit card, a debit card or a mobile wallet, when that location accepts the method for Rewards identification.
- Keep the receipt until the transaction appears in your account or you are satisfied that the Stars posted.
Scanning first is the key difference from simply paying at the counter. A payment made without identifying your Rewards account may not be connected to you later, and the ability to correct a missed scan is not guaranteed.

Store participation can narrow the choices
Starbucks says some stores may be able to award Stars only on Starbucks Card transactions. Licensed locations, kiosks and other nonstandard formats can have different systems. A store may also be unable to extend certain benefits even when it accepts Starbucks products or payment.
If the register cannot scan your barcode or the employee explains that only Starbucks Card transactions qualify, follow that location’s process rather than assuming every Starbucks-branded checkout works the same way. The store-level limitation affects whether the purchase qualifies; it does not create a higher app rate.
App versus counter: the practical differences

When the app is the better choice
- You want to order before reaching the store. The app lets you select a pickup location and submit the order ahead where mobile ordering is enabled.
- Your drink needs several customizations. Seeing the available options on screen can make the configuration easier to review before payment.
- You use the same stores and payment methods repeatedly. Favorites and saved payment details reduce setup on later orders.
- You want PayPal or another in-app method. Use it only if the option is displayed for your account and location.
- You prefer a digital receipt trail. The app keeps the transaction associated with your account, subject to the qualifying-order rules.
These are workflow advantages, not a promise that your drink will be prepared faster or more accurately. Starbucks’ published materials reviewed for this comparison do not provide a market-wide test of app versus counter wait times, reliability, order accuracy or satisfaction.

- You want to ask questions before choosing. A barista can discuss the menu and available substitutions directly.
- You are already at the store and do not need order-ahead. Counter ordering avoids selecting a pickup location and submitting a mobile order.
- You want to pay with cash. Cash is an eligible in-store tender when the location supports Rewards scanning.
- Your preferred tender is not offered in the app. The register may accept a credit card, debit card or mobile wallet that you cannot select for that particular mobile order.
- The location does not offer mobile ordering. You can still ask whether the register can scan your Rewards barcode before payment.
Current U.S. Rewards details that affect the decision
Stars and status
The published milestones are 500 Stars to achieve Gold and 2,500 Stars after Gold to achieve Reserve. The earn rate then depends on the level shown for your account. Status, offers and eligibility are account-specific, so check the app rather than relying on an older screenshot or a previous year’s explanation.

Star expiration
Under the current terms, Green Stars expire six months after the calendar month in which they were earned. The terms describe a way to extend them by taking an eligible action in the month before expiration. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while the member maintains that status. Because expiration and status rules are program-sensitive, use the balance and expiration information displayed in your account and the current terms as the controlling information.
Reload bonuses
The 2026 Rewards FAQ describes 10 Bonus Stars for a digital reload of $30 and 25 Bonus Stars for a digital reload of $50. These are published program details, not a permanent promise. They may require the specified digital reload method or other conditions, and offers can change.
Redemption changes
The same FAQ describes a 60-Star redemption option for $2 off an item, excluding gift cards, along with capped redemption values by tier. A Star is not a fixed cash equivalent: eligible items, caps, exclusions and the offer or redemption rules determine the value you receive.
Payment questions: Starbucks Card, PayPal and mobile wallets
Using a Starbucks Card
A Starbucks Card can be loaded and used in the app, and some locations may require Starbucks Card payment for Stars. However, the current level-based program does not make the card an automatic base-rate multiplier. Choose it for convenience, budgeting or a store requirement, not because the payment instrument alone guarantees more Stars.

Using PayPal
Starbucks’ official PayPal information says PayPal can be linked in the app to load a Starbucks Card digitally or pay directly, including for an order placed ahead. Availability can vary by store or checkout path, and some stores or kiosks may be unable to extend particular benefits.
Using a mobile wallet at the register
A mobile wallet can be an eligible in-store tender when the location supports it. Display and scan the Rewards barcode first, then complete payment through the wallet. Tapping a wallet without first identifying your account does not by itself connect the purchase to Rewards.
Reusable cups and Bonus Stars
Bringing a clean reusable cup is optional. Starbucks’ terms say the company may offer double Stars on a qualifying transaction when a member uses a reusable cup instead of a paper to-go cup at a participating store. The benefit can be changed or suspended, and participation is not universal.
Because the rule concerns the transaction and the participating location, do not assume that every cup model, drink type or store qualifies. Ask the store if the benefit is active, and review the terms attached to the offer in your account.
Common failure points and fixes
The Stars did not appear after an in-store purchase
- Check whether the barcode was scanned before payment.
- Confirm that the store participates in the required Rewards transaction type.
- Review whether the purchase used a guest, delivery or other excluded checkout path.
- Keep the receipt and use Starbucks’ current account-support process if the transaction remains missing.
The app does not show my preferred payment method
- Check the payment methods available for the selected store and order type.
- Consider ordering at the counter and scanning before paying if the store supports your preferred tender there.
- If you use PayPal, verify whether the app offers direct payment or only a digital Starbucks Card reload for that flow.
The store says only Starbucks Card purchases earn Stars
Treat that as a location capability limitation. If earning Stars is important, ask whether paying with a Starbucks Card is the supported route. Do not assume that the same rule applies to every Starbucks location.
The app offers a pickup store but the order cannot be completed
Mobile ordering can be unavailable for a particular store, time or order configuration. Try the store’s counter, where you can still request a barcode scan before payment, or select another participating location shown in the app.
A simple decision rule
- Choose the app when order-ahead, saved favorites, on-screen customization or an in-app payment method matters most.
- Choose the counter when you want personal assistance, cash payment, a different tender or a store that does not offer mobile ordering.
- For either route, verify eligibility. Use a qualifying app transaction, or scan your member barcode before an in-store payment at a participating location.
- Check your current level and offers. The 2026 program is level-based, and published rates, expiration rules, bonuses and redemptions can change.
For U.S. members, the best channel is the one that fits the purchase: the app for advance preparation and saved payment, the register for direct service and broader tender flexibility. Neither channel is inherently better for the base Stars rate.
