Star Wars Zero Company is a single-player, turn-based tactics game for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You lead an unconventional squad through the twilight of the Clone Wars, planning battles, developing relationships between operatives and preparing for missions at the Den. Reviews praise its tactical combat, customization and character-led story; whether it suits you depends largely on how much you enjoy deliberate squad tactics.

What is Star Wars Zero Company about?

The game follows Hawks, a former Republic officer leading Zero Company, an unconventional group of professionals for hire. In the twilight of the Clone Wars, Republic Intelligence recruits the squad to stop the Separatist-aligned Infinite Coil and its leader, Kundri Fathom, before the Shadow Plague consumes the galaxy. The story offers a ground-level squad perspective on the conflict rather than following its best-known heroes.

Orion Kellogg, Lucasfilm Games Executive Producer, described it as “a game in the Clone Wars, but from a new angle,” and called it Bit Reactor’s Star Wars story. That is a useful way to frame the premise: a new squad and threat within an established era, with the focus on operatives and their missions.

How does the gameplay work?

Turn-based squad combat

This is not a real-time action game. You position squad members and plan their actions in turn-based battles, with success depending on tactical decisions and squad management. The campaign also includes investigations and tactical missions. Players who enjoy weighing positions, abilities and loadouts should find the core loop familiar; those looking for continuous action may find its measured pace less appealing.

Squad members, bonds and customization

Zero Company can include varied operatives, from scoundrels and astromechs to a Jedi. You can customize Hawks’ specialization and appearance, as well as squad appearances, loadouts and abilities. EA says operatives improve their skills while deployed, build bonds and unlock combat synergies. The relationships are therefore tied to play as well as character development.

The Den and player decisions

Between missions, the Den serves as the squad’s base of operations, where you prepare and adapt. EA also promotes decisions and outcomes that make playthroughs different. That supports an expectation of consequential choices, but the available official description does not establish a particular branching structure or how extensively the campaign changes.

  • PC Gamer: Its PC review praised the tactics, story, production values and set pieces, including transitions between exploration and combat. The reviewer described exploration as simple corridor walking and interaction with points of interest for small bonuses, but found that it helped immersion. PC Gamer lists multiplayer as none and Steam Deck as “Not Likely.”
  • TechRadar: Its reviewer played the PC version and praised the turn-based tactics and customization, particularly loadout and specialization options. The reviewer said prior experience with XCOM-style games was not needed to enjoy the story; that is an individual experience, not a guarantee for every player.
  • Windows Central: Its reviewer praised the story, characters and tactical sequences, while observing that players who dislike XCOM-style tactics may not be persuaded. The review also cited waiting for AI and tooltips or messages as friction, and expressed a personal preference for a darker tone.

Taken together, the reviews suggest a better fit for players who want tactical squad combat supported by characters and cinematic presentation than for players who mainly want fast action or substantial free-roaming exploration.
