There is no source-backed universally best character or squad in Star Wars Zero Company. A dependable starting point is to cover frontline durability, damage, and support or utility, then use the fourth operator to answer the mission’s specific demands. Treat that as a practical framework—not a proven optimal lineup—and adjust for operator health, mission danger, and whether you have permadeath enabled.

What makes a strong Zero Company team?

Zero Company is a single-player, turn-based tactics game set near the end of the Clone Wars. Former Republic officer Hawks leads Zero Company, a squad of authored and customizable characters. You can customize Hawks’s class and appearance and tailor other operatives’ appearances, loadouts, and abilities. The official game overview also says that deploying operators together can build bonds that unlock combat synergies.

The official overview names archetypes such as scoundrels, astromechs, and Jedi. A PC Gamer guide covers eight class specializations: Assault, Gunslinger, Heavy, Medic, Scoundrel, Scout, Sharpshooter, and Soldier. Those choices offer different ways to fill squad needs, but the available sources do not establish a universally strongest character or class.

Start with roles, not a fixed character list

  • Durability: Include someone who can hold a dangerous position or help the squad absorb mistakes.
  • Damage: Bring reliable attacks suited to the mission’s likely engagement distances and targets.
  • Support or utility: Make room for healing, resource generation, or other abilities that help the squad keep acting effectively.
  • Flex slot: Use the remaining operator to address a mission-specific gap or reinforce your preferred approach.

This role mix is an editorial framework inferred from the documented class variety and combat rules, not a developer-published formula or a tested best team.

How combat mechanics shape team composition

Each operator has health points and three action points (AP) per turn for movement, attacks, and abilities, according to the official getting-started guide. The guide also describes calling for backup: a nearby teammate can add an attack to an operator’s attack. Special actions use Advantage points, which are gained by dealing damage.

Positioning can turn one attack into a team attack

Because a nearby teammate can contribute an assist, build and position your squad so an operator can bring an ally into an attack when useful. This makes proximity and turn order part of team planning; a roster’s value is not just the sum of its individual abilities.

Plan around actions and Advantage

Movement, attacks, and abilities all draw on an operator’s AP, while damage generates Advantage for special actions. Consider whether a proposed lineup can make good use of its turns and whether its abilities complement the way you expect to deal damage. The sources describe these mechanics but do not quantify which composition uses them most effectively.

Build around bonds, readiness, and mission risk

Use the operators you deploy together

The official overview says operators improve their skills together and can unlock combat synergies as they deploy on missions. That gives you a reason to develop a squad as a working team rather than swapping members without regard to bonds, while still changing operators when a mission calls for different capabilities.

Check health and availability before harder missions

The official guide describes mission danger ratings of Risky, Dangerous, and Extreme, and advises checking which operators are healthy and available before taking on harder jobs. A favorite operator is not automatically the right deployment choice if their condition or availability makes the squad less prepared.

Decide how much risk you are willing to accept

Permadeath is optional. When it is enabled, an operator who goes down gains an injury, and three injuries cause death. For a player trying to protect an injured roster, favoring sturdier operators or bringing support is a sensible precaution—but the sources do not demonstrate that a particular composition prevents deaths.

Character examples: useful details, not a ranking

In its review, TechRadar’s reviewer said their Tactical Mission squad typically included Tel for ranged Force abilities and Trick because he can withstand being downed and automatically revive on the following turn. The reviewer also mentioned Kabb’s uppercut and Luco’s sniper skill that guarantees a hit. These are examples of that reviewer’s reported experience, not a controlled comparison or a universal ranking. See the TechRadar review.

Talent recommendations by specialization

PC Gamer recommends the following talents for each specialization. These are one guide’s build suggestions, not definitive balance data or proof that a class is stronger with a particular talent.

Specialization Suggested talents
Assault A Life of Labor, Grit
Gunslinger Anticipation, Grit, A Life of Labor
Heavy Taunt, Grit, Anticipation
Medic Anticipation, Espionage, Thievery
Scoundrel Anticipation, Cold-Blooded
Scout Anticipation, Sabotage, Espionage, Thievery
Sharpshooter Cold-Blooded, The Bigger They Are…
Soldier A Life of Labor, Grit

PC Gamer describes A Life of Labor, Anticipation, and Grit as broadly strong choices, citing improved baseline stats or ways to avoid damage. Its guide also connects Taunt and defensive talents with Heavy, Cold-Blooded or The Bigger They Are… with Sharpshooter, and Espionage or Thievery with resource generation for Medic or Scout. Read the full PC Gamer talent guide, published August 27, 2026, for its reasoning.

Do not overcommit to a starting build

PC Gamer reports that recruited operators’ classes and talents can be changed in the specialization menu. That makes it possible to adapt a recruited character rather than treating an early class or talent choice as permanent.

A quick framework for choosing between squads

When deciding which operators to deploy, compare the actual options against these checks instead of assuming a named lineup is best:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Role coverage: Does the squad have enough durability, damage, and support or utility for the job?
  2. Synergy: Can operators set up useful assists, and are there bonds worth developing?
  3. Talent fit: Do the selected talents reinforce each operator’s specialization and intended role?
  4. Readiness: Are the operators healthy and available for this mission?
  5. Risk tolerance: Does the roster make sense for the mission’s danger rating and your permadeath setting?

The available sources do not provide win rates, controlled comparisons of complete squads, or a universal best-character ranking. A team that looks strong on paper should therefore be treated as a fit for your mission and play style, not an objectively proven winner.
