For a first viewing, watch Star Wars in release order. That preserves the discoveries and story reveals as audiences originally experienced them. Choose the official chronological order instead if you already know the major twists and want the in-universe timeline. If you only want the central numbered-film story, watch the nine Skywalker Saga episodes and skip every series and standalone film.
There is no mandatory sequence. StarWars.com’s May 1, 2025 viewing guide presents both approaches and puts it plainly: “Whichever order you choose…is the right one!”
Choose your path before you press play
The right order depends less on canon rules than on what you want from the marathon. Release order protects the franchise’s original reveal pattern and is the least confusing introduction. Chronological order follows the history of the galaxy, but it asks you to manage overlapping shows and anthology episodes. A Skywalker-only run is the shortest complete route through the nine numbered films.

Release order: the safest first watch
Release order is an editorial recommendation, not a Lucasfilm requirement. It lets a new viewer meet the original trilogy before the prequels explain its history, then adds later films and series as the franchise expanded. The sequence below is a practical release-order spine for the major films and series. A series marked “optional” can enrich the films without being required to understand the nine episodes.

This list is intentionally a viewing spine rather than a claim that every series is essential. You can stop after any trilogy, add a show when a character or era interests you, or complete the films first and return for television later. The official guide also displays titles associated with 2026; check whether a listed title has actually been released before adding it to a current marathon.
Why release order works for newcomers
- The original trilogy establishes the rules, vocabulary and emotional stakes before prequels reinterpret them.
- Later standalone films and series become optional expansions instead of prerequisites.
- A group can stay on one shared sequence without debating where every anthology episode belongs.
Chronological order: follow the in-universe history
The official chronological guide starts with The Acolyte, then moves through the prequel-era Republic, the Clone Wars, the Empire, the Rebellion and the New Republic/First Order period. This order is useful when you want history rather than publication context, but it is an editorial aid: several shows overlap, and anthology episodes deliberately span different years.

How to handle anthology series
Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Underworld cover wide stretches of time. Put them in a “spanning stories” folder, or place individual episodes where their settings fit, rather than pretending the whole season belongs at one point. That approach is more accurate than moving an entire anthology to a single slot.

The Clone Wars episode order matters
If you watch only the theatrical Clone Wars film, place it between the second and third prequels. If you watch the series, use Lucasfilm’s official sequential episode list, dated March 17, 2014. It includes the movie and rearranges episodes from their original broadcast sequence. A shortened fan-made list can accidentally spoil later developments or separate connected arcs.
The nine-film Skywalker Saga order
For the shortest complete route through the numbered films, use this chronological sequence:
- Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
- Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
- Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
- Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
- Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
- Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
- Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens
- Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
- Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker
This route is a complete nine-film narrative. Rogue One, Solo and every series can be added later; none is a prerequisite for following the numbered films.

How to choose between release and chronological order
Choose release order when
- You have never seen the films or are introducing children or friends to the franchise.
- You want the original reveal of relationships, identities and historical context.
- You prefer a simple checklist with fewer arguments about overlapping episodes.
Choose chronological order when
- You already know the major twists and want the Republic-to-Empire-to-First Order history.
- You are revisiting the whole canon and enjoy connecting references across series.
- You are comfortable pausing an anthology or splitting a concurrent show into arcs.
Use a hybrid when your group has mixed experience
Watch the nine films in release order, then use the chronological guide for optional series. This preserves the films’ reveal structure while giving a returning viewer a coherent historical tour through television. Another workable hybrid is the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, Rogue One, the sequel trilogy, then all series in chronological order.

Standalone stories: where they help and where they do not
Standalone films add texture without becoming homework. Rogue One is the clearest chronological insertion because it leads directly into A New Hope. Solo belongs earlier in the timeline, before Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor in the official guide, but watching it after the original trilogy is perfectly sensible in release order. Neither standalone is required to understand the nine episodic films.
Viewing logistics and current availability
The official viewing guide directs viewers to Disney+ for the films and series, but catalogues change and differ by territory. Confirm availability in your country on the day you plan the marathon. Do not assume that a title displayed in a guide is already streamable: the current guide includes titles associated with 2026, so verify release status and the exact edition before building a schedule.

- Download or bookmark the official chronological guide if you are following timeline order.
- For The Clone Wars, keep the official sequential episode list open rather than relying on broadcast order.
- Decide in advance whether optional series are full commitments or selected arcs; this prevents a film night from turning into an unplanned multi-season project.
- Keep anthology episodes separate until you confirm where each story falls.
Optional deeper reference
Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Timelines on February 17, 2022 as a visual chronological guide covering the Skywalker Saga films, live-action and animated series, books, comics and games. It is useful for exploring the wider fictional history, but you do not need the book to choose a viewing order. Check the current edition, format and availability before buying because retail listings can change.
Common watch-order mistakes
Treating chronology as one exact episode-by-episode line
Overlapping series and anthology seasons make that impossible without splitting stories into smaller units. Use the official guide for broad placement and the dedicated Clone Wars list for episode-level sequencing.
Assuming every series is essential
The nine episodic films stand on their own. Series are expansions, not entrance fees. Add them when you want more context about a character, faction or era.

Putting Rogue One somewhere near the original trilogy without stating why
In chronology, it belongs immediately before A New Hope. In release order, it follows The Force Awakens. Labeling the chosen method prevents confusion.
Calling a title released because it appears on a current guide
Guide pages can list future or newly announced titles. Check the release date and regional catalogue before describing one as available.
