Star Wars Outlaws is the better choice for a finished, supported open-world adventure; Star Wars Genesis is the more experimental option for players who want to modify Starfield and follow an evolving total-conversion project. They are not equivalent products. Genesis is an unfinished, player-installed Starfield conversion whose final quests, progression and technical requirements can change. Outlaws is a commercial game with a defined story, platforms and systems built around Kay Vess, her companion Nix and reputation with crime syndicates.

The meaningful comparison is therefore not simply which game has the larger map or deeper skill tree. It is authored campaign versus sandbox experimentation, predictable support versus mod variability, and a documented action-adventure progression model versus an ambitious RPG framework that is still being built.

What each project actually is

Star Wars Genesis is a Starfield total conversion

Genesis is not a standalone game that you can install and play independently of Starfield. It is an unfinished total-conversion project intended to replace Starfield locations, ships, weapons and non-player characters with Star Wars counterparts. The developers also plan to rewrite major quests, introduce new factions and create experiences that go beyond a cosmetic reskin.

Developer DeityVengy described the goal as “an immersive RPG with a unique story and expansive endgame, rather than a re-skin of Starfield with the same flaws.” That statement describes the project’s direction, not a completed feature list. Because Genesis remains in development, its final quest structure, progression systems, economy, balance, installation process and completion date are not fixed.

Star Wars Outlaws is a finished licensed release

Outlaws is an officially licensed commercial game. StarWars.com describes it as the first open-world Star Wars game, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You play Kay Vess, a scoundrel trying to survive a dangerous underworld, alongside Nix, her companion.

Its systems are designed around an authored campaign with open areas rather than an open-ended character sandbox. Kay develops abilities during the journey, takes on missions and activities, manages relationships with crime syndicates and travels between outdoor environments, settlements and cantinas. She can use stealth, a blaster, gadgets and deception, while Nix can distract or assist during encounters. The Trailblazer provides piloting and dogfighting sequences.

World design: sandbox breadth versus authored locations

What Genesis can offer

Genesis inherits the basic premise of a modded Starfield sandbox: the player can move through space and planetary environments while interacting with systems that are being reworked into a Star Wars framework. That foundation gives the project room for faction experimentation, emergent encounters and player-directed activity. A conversion can also change the economy, quests and non-player characters rather than merely changing textures or names.

The important qualification is that Genesis’s intended breadth is not the same as a delivered feature. The available reporting confirms the ambition to rewrite major quests and add new factions and experiences, but it does not establish a final map size, a complete endgame loop or a guaranteed seamless installation. Any expectation about those elements should be treated as provisional until the project publishes a stable release and documentation.

How Outlaws structures its world

Outlaws uses authored planets and hubs connected by open outdoor areas. You can ride a speeder across routes, enter cantinas and settlements, investigate jobs and move into combat or stealth situations. The structure is open enough to support exploration, but the campaign still controls the order and context in which Kay’s abilities, contacts and conflicts develop.

This design favors pacing and clarity. A mission can be built around a specific infiltration, investigation or escape, while reputation systems alter the opportunities and reactions that follow. The result is less of a blank Star Wars simulator and more of a directed scoundrel story in which open spaces support the narrative.

Which game has the deeper RPG system?

Genesis’s potential depth

Genesis is aiming at the broader RPG promise. Its stated goals include multiple factions, rewritten quests, a revised economy and an expansive endgame. In principle, those systems could let a player define a role through alliances, economic decisions and the way they approach faction content.

There is no documented final skill tree, class system or progression chart to evaluate. It would be inaccurate to claim that Genesis already offers deeper character building than Outlaws. At this stage, its RPG depth is an architectural ambition rather than a verified, stable system. The project may eventually deliver more systemic choice, but the evidence does not establish how progression points are earned, which abilities exist, whether factions lock one another out or how an endgame is structured.

Outlaws’s focused progression

Outlaws does not present a documented class tree in the material available for comparison. Kay’s abilities develop during the journey, with progression tied to missions, gear, activities and syndicate reputation. That approach gives the campaign a controlled rhythm: new capabilities arrive as Kay meets people, completes work and expands her options.

For players who define “RPG depth” as a large build-crafting system, this is a narrower model than Genesis’s stated ambition. For players who value abilities that are introduced in context and immediately used in authored missions, the focused model can feel more coherent. Outlaws’s system is known and playable; Genesis’s eventual system is not yet documented well enough for a head-to-head numerical comparison.

Factions, reputation and consequences

Genesis’s reported faction experiment

The Genesis concept includes Imperial, Sith, Shadow Collective and Rebel factions. That lineup suggests a setting in which alliances could shape access to missions, characters and resources. The project also intends to rewrite major quests, which could provide more meaningful faction divergence than a cosmetic conversion.

However, no stable consequence model has been published in the cited reporting. You cannot currently assume that every faction has a complete questline, that choices permanently alter the world or that joining one group blocks another. Those are possibilities implied by the design, not established capabilities of a finished build.

Outlaws makes reputation a visible system

In Outlaws, decisions made for one syndicate can change Kay’s reputation with that organization. Reputation affects the way the criminal groups view her and forms a central part of the campaign’s decision-making. The system gives choices a practical context: taking a job, betraying an interest or helping one group can influence the opportunities available through another.

That is a different kind of consequence from a fully simulated faction sandbox. Outlaws places reputation inside a authored story about survival and escape, while Genesis is trying to build a wider network of factions whose final interactions remain unsettled.

Combat and moment-to-moment play

Outlaws combines several defined play styles

Outlaws explicitly mixes stealth, blaster combat, gadgets, investigations and deception. A player can approach an encounter quietly, use equipment to create an opening, fight directly or manipulate the situation through Kay’s underworld skills. Nix can distract or assist, giving the player another tool during an encounter. Creative director Julian Gerighty said, “We decided very early on that we weren’t going to hurt Nix. He’s a bulletproof companion.” That design choice makes Nix a dependable gameplay partner rather than a fragile escort objective.

Travel is part of the same loop. Speeder routes connect outdoor spaces, and the Trailblazer supports piloting and dogfights. Gerighty described the broader simulation as “a system that we developed called the Living World System.” The quote identifies the name of the technology or design approach, while the practical features players can expect are the moving between hubs, riding across landscapes, taking jobs and entering ground or space encounters.

The story tone is deliberately precarious. Gerighty called it “a survival story. This is a getting out of trouble story.” That framing explains why reputation, deception and improvised escapes matter as much as direct firepower.

Genesis inherits systems that are being converted

Genesis is built on Starfield-derived space and planetary systems, but the conversion is intended to alter them for a Star Wars setting. That creates room for a player-driven loop involving travel, faction work and exploration. It also means that the final combat balance, interface behavior, vehicle or ship handling and encounter variety depend on the state of the mod and its dependencies.

You should not assume that every Starfield system will survive unchanged or that Genesis will provide a polished equivalent of Outlaws’s speeder, companion and dogfight design. The project is explicitly trying to avoid simply reproducing Starfield’s flaws, and its developers have not established a final balance sheet for the converted mechanics.

Support, installation and availability

What playing Genesis requires

Genesis requires a copy of Starfield, the conversion files and whatever installation or dependency stack the project currently specifies. Because the project is unfinished, those requirements can change between releases. Mod conflicts, load-order problems, missing dependencies and incomplete systems are normal risks for an evolving total conversion.

A sensible Genesis checklist is:

  • Confirm that your Starfield edition and platform are supported by the current Genesis build.
  • Read the project’s current installation instructions before downloading older files.
  • Check every required dependency and its version.
  • Back up saves and keep a separate profile for the conversion.
  • Expect unfinished quests, balance changes or broken compatibility after updates.

The evidence does not establish a final completion date, fixed hardware requirements or guaranteed one-click installation. Do not buy hardware or plan a long playthrough around assumptions that the project has not confirmed.

What playing Outlaws requires

Outlaws is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. Its editions can include story packs and cosmetic content, so check the contents of the edition for your chosen platform before purchase. Unlike Genesis, you are selecting a defined commercial release rather than assembling a changing mod stack.

That distinction matters for troubleshooting. If an Outlaws mission or update causes a problem, the publisher’s supported build and platform-specific patches define the recovery path. With Genesis, the relevant fix may instead be a dependency update, a load-order change, a clean reinstall or reverting to an earlier mod version.

How to choose between them

Choose Genesis if you want to experiment

  • You already own Starfield and enjoy installing, updating and troubleshooting mods.
  • You prefer systemic experimentation over a guaranteed, finished campaign.
  • The prospect of testing a Star Wars conversion with multiple reported factions is more appealing than a fixed progression path.
  • You are comfortable treating the project as work in progress and keeping backup saves.

Genesis is best understood as a long-term project to watch and play as its releases mature. Its appeal comes from the possibility of a Star Wars sandbox with rewritten quests, economy changes and faction experimentation, not from a currently verified list of completed RPG features.

Choose Outlaws if you want a straightforward game

  • You want to purchase, install and start a supported Star Wars adventure on a current console or PC.
  • You prefer an authored campaign with clear protagonists, missions and progression.
  • You want stealth, blaster combat, gadgets, investigations, deception, speeder travel and dogfights in one defined package.
  • You like choices that visibly affect syndicate reputation without managing a large mod ecosystem.

Outlaws is the safer recommendation for someone asking which Star Wars open-world game to buy today. Its systems, platforms and campaign premise are established, while Genesis’s final form is not.

Decision table for common priorities

If your priority is… Better fit Why
A finished, supported release Star Wars Outlaws It is a commercial game with defined platforms and an established campaign.
Mod experimentation Star Wars Genesis It is built as a player-installed Starfield conversion.
Documented faction reputation Star Wars Outlaws Syndicate choices and reputation are explicit parts of the game.
Potentially broader faction sandbox Star Wars Genesis Its reported goals include several factions and rewritten quests, although the final implementation is unsettled.
Stealth, gadgets and companion-assisted encounters Star Wars Outlaws Those mechanics are explicit features involving Kay and Nix.
A predictable installation Star Wars Outlaws Genesis requires Starfield plus a changing dependency and mod stack.

What this comparison cannot establish

There is no fair basis for declaring Genesis the deeper RPG by counting skills, missions or map area, because those final values have not been documented. Likewise, there is no evidence here that Genesis has a larger map, a seamless installation or a completed endgame. Those claims should wait for a stable release and published technical details.

There is also no reason to treat the two games as interchangeable versions of the same design. Outlaws is built to deliver Kay’s specific survival story and syndicate relationships. Genesis is an attempt to transform Starfield into a different Star Wars role-playing framework. The better choice depends on whether you want certainty now or are willing to trade certainty for the possibility of a more systemic, player-shaped experience.
