Choose local Split-Screen Battle Mode when everyone is in the same room; choose Online Battle when friends are in different places or you want matchmaking and private online rules. The Switch 2 game supports up to four players on one system locally and up to eight players online. If your group wants to play through missions cooperatively instead of fight each other, Campaign co-op is a third option with pilot and gunner roles.
What this comparison covers
This article is about Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2, not every multiplayer release in the series. Nintendo lists it as a Switch 2 exclusive released on June 25, 2026. The product listing says Local Split-Screen Battle Mode arrived through a free update, and a September 29, 2026 news entry announced additional multiplayer content.
The practical choice is not a question of one mode being universally superior. Local and online Battle assemble the same kind of competitive group in different places, while Campaign co-op changes the activity from dogfighting against friends to completing missions together.

| Mode | Best situation | Players and platform arrangement | What you do | Key setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local Split-Screen Battle | Everyone is together in one room | Up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2 | Competitive Battle Mode, with human players able to include CPU opponents | Pair the additional compatible controllers on that Switch 2 |
| Online Battle | Friends are in different locations, or you want matchmaking | Up to eight players online on separate consoles; a group can enter matchmaking with up to three friends | Matchmaking or a private battle with customizable rules | Internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online; availability can vary by country |
| Campaign co-op | You want to experience missions together rather than compete | Local on one system or online through GameShare via GameChat using two Nintendo Switch 2 consoles | Asymmetric two-person play: one player pilots and the other aims the gun | Use the Campaign co-op/GameShare flow described in Nintendo Support |
For a party already sitting around one television, local split-screen is the straightforward recommendation because it avoids coordinating separate consoles and online accounts. For a distributed group, Online Battle is the only Battle option that puts everyone into the same match from separate locations. Campaign co-op is the better fit when the shared goal is a mission rather than a winner.

How local Split-Screen Battle works
What the mode provides
Local Battle Mode runs on one Switch 2 and divides the display for the participating pilots. Nintendo’s support instructions allow up to four players on that system. Human pilots can fight one another and add CPU-controlled opponents, which lets a smaller gathering fill out a match without requiring every slot to be occupied by a person.
The mode is available through the game’s free multiplayer update. Make sure the console has installed the current game update before inviting people; the Nintendo product page identifies the update as the route by which Local Split-Screen Battle was added.
Local setup, step by step
- Start Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2 that everyone will share.
- Pair each person’s compatible controller with that console using the Switch 2 controller-pairing process. Do this before entering the pilot-selection screen so every participant is recognized.
- Open Battle Mode and choose the local, split-screen option.
- Have each player select a pilot when prompted. If fewer than four people are present, use the available CPU-opponent option to add computer-controlled participants where appropriate.
- Select the mission or battle setup shown by the game and confirm the match.
Extra controllers are the main practical requirement for a local gathering. The game’s local limit is a limit on one system, not a promise that a single controller can represent several people; each human participant needs an input device that the console recognizes.

When local play is the better choice
- One-room events: everyone can agree on pilots, rules and rematches without a voice-chat service.
- Mixed human and computer groups: CPU opponents can occupy open places when the room has fewer people than the local player ceiling.
- Simple logistics: there is one game session and one display rather than several consoles that must all connect to the internet.
Official Nintendo material does not establish a frame-rate advantage, a latency advantage, or a technical quality ranking for split-screen. The recommendation is therefore logistical: local play best matches a group that is physically together, not a claim that it performs better under every condition.

How Online Battle works
Player limits and group structure
Nintendo Support lists a maximum of eight players for Online Battle. You can enter matchmaking as a party with up to three friends, whether those friends are joining from their own consoles or are local participants on one console. That party can then be matched with other online players.
If you want a controlled session instead of public matchmaking, create a private battle. Nintendo says private battles allow the host to customize the rules, making them suitable for friend-only competitions, agreed pilot restrictions or repeatable house rules.
Online requirements
- An internet connection for the Switch 2.
- A Nintendo Account for the online features that require it.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play.
- A country or region where the relevant online service is available; Nintendo notes that availability can vary by country.
These requirements apply to the online features, not to the basic fact of owning the game. If one friend cannot meet the account, membership or regional requirements, local Battle on one system may be the more practical plan for an in-person gathering.
Online setup, step by step
- On each participating Switch 2, connect to the internet and sign in with the Nintendo Account that will use the online service.
- Confirm that the account has the required Nintendo Switch Online membership and that online service is available in its country or region.
- Open Star Fox and enter Online Battle.
- Choose whether to join matchmaking with friends or create a private battle. For a friend group, use the in-game invitation or party flow to bring in up to three friends before matchmaking.
- For a private session, set the available battle rules, invite the intended participants and start when everyone appears in the room.
The official pages reviewed do not publish a matchmaking-population figure, a latency guarantee, a network-stability rating or a measured performance comparison with split-screen. Those factors can affect an individual session, but they should not be presented as established reasons to prefer one mode.

Battle Mode versus Campaign co-op
Choose Battle when the point is competition
Both local split-screen and Online Battle are competitive formats. You select pilots, enter a battle and play against other human pilots, with CPU opponents available in the local format. Online play adds public matchmaking and private rooms with customizable rules, while local play keeps the group on one system.
Choose Campaign co-op when the point is cooperation
Campaign co-op lets two people work through missions together instead of trying to defeat one another. The roles are intentionally asymmetric: one person steers the craft as pilot, while the other aims and fires as gunner. That division means both players contribute different controls rather than duplicating the same job.
Nintendo Support describes Campaign co-op as available locally on one system or online through GameShare via GameChat with two Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. This is a separate arrangement from an eight-player Online Battle; it is designed for a two-console cooperative session and a shared campaign experience.
How to decide between the two activities
- Pick Battle Mode for score-settling, rotating winners, short competitive rounds or a larger online party.
- Pick Campaign co-op for a two-person partnership, learning missions together or sharing control of a single objective.
- If your group is larger than the campaign arrangement supports, use Battle Mode and organize a private room or local rotation instead.
Setup and cost considerations
| Consideration | Local Split-Screen Battle | Online Battle | Campaign co-op |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware arrangement | One Nintendo Switch 2 connected to the shared display, plus compatible controllers for the people playing | Participating players use their own compatible Switch 2 consoles and controllers | One shared system for local co-op, or two Switch 2 consoles for GameShare through GameChat |
| Service requirements | Controller pairing and the game’s multiplayer update | Internet, Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online; regional availability applies | GameShare via GameChat for the two-console online arrangement |
| Match format | Split-screen Battle with optional CPU opponents | Matchmaking party or private battle with customizable rules | Cooperative campaign with pilot and gunner roles |
The official information does not establish a current regional retail price for the game, a price for additional controllers, or whether a particular physical listing is in stock. Budget for the equipment and subscription requirements that apply to your chosen arrangement, and verify local pricing separately.

Decision guide for common friend-group situations
Four friends at the same house
Use Local Split-Screen Battle. Bring the required controllers, install the free multiplayer update, pair the controllers and start a local Battle. If fewer people want to play in a round, CPU opponents can supplement the human roster.
Two friends in different cities
Use Online Battle if you want to compete, provided both accounts meet the internet, Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online requirements. If the goal is to clear missions together, use Campaign co-op through GameShare via GameChat with the two Switch 2 consoles.
A large online group
Use Online Battle because its ceiling is eight players. Start a friend party with up to three people, then use matchmaking to fill the remaining places, or create a private battle and invite the intended group. The local four-player limit cannot put the entire larger group on one console.
Friends together who want a private tournament
Local Battle avoids online-service requirements and keeps everyone in the room. If the group needs more players than one system supports, split the evening into rotations or move to Online Battle on separate consoles and use a private battle with customized rules.

A player without online membership
Plan a local session on one Switch 2 if everyone can meet physically. Online Battle requires Nintendo Switch Online, so an account without that membership cannot use the online feature that requires it.
Preparation checklist
Before a local session
- Install the game’s free multiplayer update.
- Charge and pair every compatible controller before opening pilot selection.
- Decide whether open places should be filled by CPU opponents.
- Choose a shared display position where each participant can see the split-screen information.
Before an online session
- Confirm internet access on every participating Switch 2.
- Check each player’s Nintendo Account sign-in and Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Verify that the online feature is available in each participant’s country or region.
- Decide in advance whether the group wants public matchmaking or a private room with customized rules.
- Send invitations only after the host has selected the intended battle format.
Before Campaign co-op
- Agree on who will pilot and who will operate the gunner controls.
- For online co-op, make sure both people have Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and can use GameShare through GameChat.
- For local co-op, pair the controllers on the shared system before launching the campaign activity.
What is known—and what is not—about the experience
Nintendo’s published material establishes the modes, player ceilings, account and service requirements, private-battle rules option, and Campaign co-op roles described above. It does not provide an independent study or named-person quotation comparing enjoyment, responsiveness or technical performance.
It also does not establish the size of the matchmaking population, typical latency, network stability, split-screen frame rate, or current retail stock in a particular country. Treat those as session-dependent or region-dependent questions rather than settled advantages for local or online play. If those details matter to your group, check the service status and local availability immediately before arranging an event.
Do not confuse this with Star Fox 64 3D
Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS is a separate, older product. Nintendo describes up to four players dogfighting through local wireless communication on their Nintendo 3DS systems. That is not the current Switch 2 game’s one-console split-screen mode and should not be counted as evidence about Switch 2 online play.
Nintendo’s 2011 announcement for Star Fox 64 3D names Survival, Point Battle and Time Battle modes. It also describes a feature using the 3DS camera to show opponents’ live video in the game. Those historical modes and the camera feature belong to the 3DS release; they do not describe the Switch 2 game’s current Battle, Online Battle or GameShare arrangements.
Final recommendation
For friends physically sharing a room, start with Local Split-Screen Battle: it keeps the session on one Switch 2 and supports human-versus-human play with optional CPU opponents. For friends in separate locations, use Online Battle, choosing matchmaking for a broader pool or a private battle when you want control over the rules. If the group wants to cooperate through missions, skip both competitive formats and use Campaign co-op, where one player pilots and the other acts as gunner.
