Star Fox controls depend on which game you’re playing: the Switch 2 remake, the original SNES game, Star Fox 64 3D on 3DS, or Star Fox Zero on Wii U. The button mappings and aiming methods are not interchangeable. Identify your game first, then use the matching controls and beginner advice below.

What are the controls for Star Fox?

There is no single control scheme for every Star Fox. The four games covered here use different hardware and input styles, and even older games may offer more than one control configuration. For the Switch 2 game, the facts below describe the standard button-control option and its settings; they do not assume a specific button mapping beyond the options Nintendo documents.

Game Platform Input approach Useful beginner aid
Star Fox (remake) Nintendo Switch 2 Standard button controls; mouse targeting is an additional option in Campaign and Challenge Y-axis setting, visible reticle, and mouse sensitivity options
Star Fox (original) Super Nintendo Entertainment System Directional pad and face/shoulder buttons; the manual’s default example is Type A Control Select Screen offers other configurations
Star Fox 64 3D Nintendo 3DS Circle pad or system tilt, with gyro steering available Tap B with the system neutral to recenter gyro alignment
Star Fox Zero Wii U Dual sticks plus motion aiming on the GamePad Dedicated Training option

These distinctions matter most when you are looking up a maneuver. For example, a barrel roll is performed with shoulder-button double-taps in the SNES and 3DS games, while Zero relies on a different arrangement of sticks and motion controls. Check the game title and platform before following a control tip.

How do you play the Switch 2 Star Fox remake?

Nintendo describes the Switch 2 release as a remake of the Nintendo 64 game. It supports standard button controls and also offers mouse targeting, cooperative play that divides piloting and gunning between two players, and compatibility with the Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch as an optional way to get a more original-style experience. Mouse targeting and the co-op feature are available in Campaign and Challenge modes, not Battle Mode.

Set up the controls before a mission

  1. Open the in-game Options menu with +. Some settings cannot be changed during Battle Mode, so make adjustments before entering a match.
  2. Choose the Y-axis direction that feels natural for climbing and diving. The setting applies to the Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue-Marine.
  3. Turn on the reticle if a visible aiming reference helps you track where you are pointing.
  4. If using mouse targeting, do so in Campaign or Challenge and adjust the sensitivity in Options until aiming feels manageable.
  5. Enable button combos if you prefer the original game’s button-combo behavior.

Start with standard button controls if mouse targeting is unfamiliar. Learn the basic steering and aiming rhythm in a campaign or challenge before deciding whether another input style suits you better. The game offers a cockpit camera rotation option, too; try it only if the default cockpit view makes it difficult for you to keep your bearings.

Optional controller and co-op

The Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is optional, not a requirement for normal play. Nintendo says it is sold separately and that a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to purchase it. Co-op changes the job split: one player pilots while the other handles gunning. That can make coordination part of the challenge, so agree on how you will communicate targets and movement rather than assuming both players are steering.

What are the SNES Star Fox controls?

Nintendo’s SNES manual uses Type A as its example configuration and notes that other arrangements are available on the in-game Control Select Screen. Under Type A, the directional pad moves the ship, A launches a Nova Bomb, B fires the retro-rocket, L and R perform rolls, X boosts, and Y fires the laser blaster.

How do you do a barrel roll in SNES Star Fox?

Rapidly double-tap L or R to execute a complete barrel roll. Holding a roll can help the ship pass through a narrow space, but the quick double-tap is the manual’s instruction for the full maneuver. Nintendo’s manual says a complete roll can reflect some laser attacks and shake off enemies attached to the ship. It does not mean every attack can be reflected, so do not treat the roll as universal protection.

Beginner approach to SNES controls

  • Use the Control Select Screen if Type A’s layout does not suit you; the manual confirms alternate configurations but the specific alternatives are not detailed here.
  • Learn which face button fires your laser and which activates the bomb before a crowded encounter. The Type A mapping is easy to confuse because the bomb, retro-rocket, boost, and laser occupy four different buttons.
  • Practice the double-tap roll when there is room to recover rather than waiting for a narrow passage or incoming fire to learn the timing.

What are the Star Fox 64 3D controls?

Nintendo’s Star Fox 64 3D manual generally describes Type A controls. The Circle Pad or system tilt steers and controls climbing and diving; A fires the laser, B brakes, X boosts, and Y uses bombs. Double-tap L or R for a barrel roll. In all-range mode, the manual also lists controls for changing the point of view and performing a U-turn.

The system’s tilt option means that the same movement can be controlled through either the Circle Pad or physical movement, depending on the selected method. If gyro steering no longer seems aligned with the screen, hold the system in its intended neutral position and tap B. Nintendo identifies that as the way to reset the gyro alignment. It is a recentering step, not a change to the game’s button layout.

Use your team’s information

  • Peppy provides strategic advice and can point out enemy weak points. Treat his comments as hints about what to notice, especially if you are still learning a boss or mission.
  • Slippy displays a boss’s shield gauge during a boss fight when he is flying with the team. Use that visual information to judge whether your attacks are making progress.
  • Falco can affect route guidance: helping him early makes a branch to the harder route more likely. That is an optional route consideration, not a prerequisite for learning controls or completing the game.

How do you control and aim in Star Fox Zero?

Star Fox Zero is the Wii U game, and its control scheme is distinct from the other titles here. Nintendo’s developer interview describes the left stick as piloting, the right stick’s forward and backward movement as boost and brake, ZR as firing, motion controls as the way to aim at enemies, and A as the transform action.

Learn the GamePad views before combat

The Wii U GamePad’s two sticks and motion aiming divide the job between steering and pointing at targets. That can feel less direct if you expect the aiming control to work like a conventional second stick. Nintendo provides a Training option in the manual, and the development team recommends trying Training before battle if you have not played before.

  1. Choose Training from the game’s menu and learn the basic piloting input with the left stick.
  2. Keep the TV and GamePad views oriented so you can understand which view you are using when you steer or aim.
  3. Practice using motion aiming to line up an enemy, then fire with ZR.
  4. Add the right-stick boost and brake actions after the basic steering-and-aiming relationship is clear.
  5. Practice the A-button transform action separately, then combine it with movement when you are comfortable.

This order is a practical learning sequence based on the documented controls, not a claim that the game requires those steps in that order. If aiming feels confusing, pause and return to Training rather than trying to learn steering, motion aiming, transforming, and speed control all at once.

How should a beginner choose settings and build control confidence?

Use the option that reduces confusion without adding a new input method before you understand the basics. A visible aiming reference can help when you are unsure where shots are directed; an axis adjustment can help if climbing and diving feel reversed. Gyro recentering is useful when tilt input has drifted from the screen’s orientation, while Training is the right starting point for Zero’s more unusual arrangement.

  • If movement feels backward: In the Switch 2 remake, change the Y-axis direction in Options. On the 3DS game, if gyro alignment is the problem rather than the axis preference, return the system to neutral and tap B.
  • If aiming is hard to read: Turn on the Switch 2 reticle. In Zero, spend time in Training learning the motion-aiming relationship between the GamePad and TV views.
  • If you are changing input styles: Learn one scheme first. In particular, mouse targeting on Switch 2 is a Campaign/Challenge option, while Zero’s motion aiming belongs specifically to the Wii U GamePad scheme.
  • If a listed button does not match your game: Confirm the installment and, where available, check the control configuration in that game. SNES Type A is only the manual’s example setup, not a guarantee that every player selected it.

There is no control setting that is best for everyone. Begin with the default or standard scheme, change one setting at a time, and try it in a mode where you can learn without also having to manage a competitive match. Once a control change feels comfortable, keep it long enough to build consistency before changing another.

Which Star Fox control scheme should you use?

For a first playthrough, the simplest choice is usually the scheme designed for the hardware you are holding: standard buttons on Switch 2, Type A as the documented example on SNES or 3DS, and Training before battle on Wii U. Optional features are there to address particular preferences—mouse targeting, gyro steering, or an N64-style controller—not because they are required to play.

The main practical difference is where the game asks you to aim. The Switch 2 remake offers standard buttons and limited-mode mouse targeting; the SNES and 3DS examples center on button-based firing with movement controls; Zero specifically uses GamePad motion to aim. Choose instructions that name your exact game, adjust the relevant accessibility or orientation option, and learn the remaining actions in manageable pieces.
