A Stanford-led experiment found that a bleached coral fragment can regain its color and recover quickly when placed directly against a healthy fragment from the same genetic individual. The healthy fragment’s tissue fused with the bleached one, creating a route for photosynthetic algae and nutrients to move across. The result is promising for coral biology, but it has only been demonstrated in small fragments kept in laboratory tanks—not on a wild reef.
What the Stanford experiment tested
The study, published by Daniel S. Collins and colleagues as “Rapid coral bleaching recovery via symbiont transfer from healthy corals” in Science Advances on 14 October 2026 (12, eaeh1580; DOI 10.1126/sciadv.aeh1580), used fragments of the coral species Pocillopora damicornis.
Researchers created ten healthy/bleached fragment pairs. Five pairs were placed in direct physical contact. The other five pairs were kept a few millimetres apart, allowing the researchers to test whether proximity alone was enough.

Because the experiment involved only ten pairs of small fragments, its results show a biological effect under controlled conditions rather than a measured success rate for reef restoration.

How touching enabled recovery
Bleaching occurs when stressful conditions cause coral to lose dinoflagellate algae, commonly called symbionts. These algae live in coral tissue and provide much of the animal’s energy through photosynthesis. Losing them leaves the coral pale and severely short of energy.
High-powered microscopy showed that compatible healthy and bleached fragments developed a tissue bridge. That fused tissue acted as a conduit: algal symbionts and nutrients moved from the healthy fragment into the bleached fragment. As the algae recolonized the damaged tissue, the bleached fragment regained its color.

The first detectable transfer appeared after about three days of direct contact. The researchers reported that about one week of contact could begin a recovery process that continued even after the fragments were separated. In the pairing experiment, the symbiont population was reported to double every four days by the second week.

The effect was not simply a matter of putting any healthy coral beside a bleached one. Fusion occurred when both fragments came from the same genetic individual, known as the same genet. Fragments from different species, or from different animals of the same species, did not fuse and did not nurse the bleached fragment back to health.

The physical arrangement mattered just as much. A gap of only a few millimetres prevented the tissue bridge and the key transfer observed in the touching pairs. The finding therefore combines two strict requirements: genetic compatibility and uninterrupted contact between living tissue.
How fast is “fast and full” recovery?
- About three days: the first detectable movement of symbionts was observed after compatible fragments were placed together.
- About one week: contact could initiate recovery that continued after separation, according to the study reports.
- By week two: the symbiont population was reported to be doubling every four days.
- Within eight weeks: the touching bleached fragments recovered in the reported experiment.
- By 20 weeks: the separated bleached fragments had died.
These intervals describe the laboratory pairing experiment. They should not be read as a timetable for rescuing an entire colony or a reef exposed to changing temperature, disease, waves and competition.

Can this method work on a real reef?
Not yet. The study establishes that direct contact can rapidly move symbionts between genetically matched fragments in tanks. It does not show that whole colonies or wild reefs can be treated in the same way.
Several practical questions remain unresolved:
- How much healthy donor coral would be needed to support a larger bleached colony?
- Can the contact arrangement be maintained in waves and currents?
- Would repeated contact be necessary for large or severely damaged colonies?
- Does the mechanism work across the many coral species found on reefs?
- Can the approach scale without removing too much healthy tissue from donor corals?
- Will recovered fragments remain healthy under the environmental stress that caused bleaching?
The AAAS summary identifies field-scale testing as the next step. Until those trials are completed, the discovery is best viewed as a possible tool for controlled coral nurseries or restoration experiments, not as a ready-made reef treatment.

What the researchers said
Fiorenza Micheli, a Stanford marine ecologist and co-author, said: “This incredible new result — that fast and full recovery is possible in bleached coral — can inspire solutions that eventually may be scalable.”
Daniel Collins said: “We were blown away when we watched the colour of the algal symbionts transfer over to the bleached coral, reviving it in a very short period of time.”
The comments reflect the study’s promise while leaving scalability as an open question. The strongest conclusion supported by the experiment is narrower: a healthy, genetically matched fragment can restore a bleached partner through direct tissue fusion, and the transfer can begin within days.
