Permanent standard time is the better-supported choice for sleep, circadian alignment, and population health. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) says year-round standard time tracks human biology and the natural light-dark cycle more closely than daylight saving time (DST). The clearest harm comes from the spring “spring-forward” transition, when the clock moves ahead and many people lose sleep while morning light arrives later by the clock.

That conclusion is a policy recommendation, not a promise that every person will sleep better under one clock label. Evidence is strongest for avoiding clock changes and for keeping social schedules aligned with circadian timing; long-term, head-to-head evidence comparing permanent standard time with permanent DST remains incomplete.

What standard time and daylight saving time change in your body

Standard time is the reference clock used during the darker part of the year. Daylight saving time moves civil time one hour later so that daylight appears later on the clock in the evening. The sun does not move when a government changes the clock; work, school, meals, and bedtime do.

Your circadian system uses light, especially morning light, to set the timing of sleepiness and alertness. A clock change can therefore create a mismatch between the time your obligations demand and the time your brain and body are biologically prepared to sleep. This mismatch is often called social jet lag. It can occur even when the change is only one hour because the lost sleep and altered light exposure happen on top of fixed school and work schedules.

Why morning light matters

The AASM’s circadian-rhythm practice-parameter review reports that properly timed morning light produces a phase advance: sleep onset and circadian rhythms shift earlier, and objectively measured daytime alertness improves. In practical terms, light soon after waking is a strong cue for moving your body clock earlier after a spring-forward change.

Why the spring transition feels harder

When clocks move from standard time to DST, a 7 a.m. alarm occurs at what was previously 6 a.m. by the body’s internal timing. Unless bedtime also moves earlier, the first nights commonly provide less sleep opportunity. Morning darkness can make waking more difficult, while the later clock time can expose you to more light in the evening, when your system would normally be preparing for sleep.

Which policy is better? A comparison

Question Permanent standard time Permanent daylight saving time Seasonal clock changes
Alignment with natural light-dark timing Closer to the sun’s seasonal timing, particularly for morning light and sleep onset. Places civil time later than standard time, creating darker mornings and later evening clock times. Requires the body to re-adjust twice each year.
Sleep disruption Avoids the recurring one-hour transitions. Avoids transitions if adopted year-round, but the later clock may remain misaligned with some people’s biology. The spring change is associated with acute sleep disruption; the autumn change can also disturb routines.
Observed health and safety findings The AASM identifies year-round standard time as the best-supported policy for public health and safety. A definitive long-term comparison with permanent standard time has not been established. The spring transition is associated with increased risks of adverse cardiovascular events, mood disorders, and motor-vehicle crashes.
Evidence strength Supported by circadian biology plus population and observational evidence. Long-term, head-to-head evidence is less complete. Transition effects have the clearest observational signal.

On the evidence currently summarized by the AASM, permanent standard time is the preferred public-health policy. The recommendation reflects the combination of circadian alignment and the desire to eliminate transition-related risks, not a randomized trial proving that every health outcome is better under standard time.

What the health evidence says about daylight saving time

Acute sleep loss

The spring transition removes an hour from the interval available for sleep unless a person changes bedtime in advance. People who already sleep near the minimum recommended duration have less reserve for this disruption. The AASM and Sleep Research Society recommend that the average healthy adult obtain at least seven hours of sleep per night on a regular basis.

A single short night does not establish a chronic disorder, but it can impair alertness and make early-morning tasks harder. Repeatedly forcing schedules to change can also make it difficult for people with fixed work, school, caregiving, or transportation commitments to recover the lost sleep.

Cardiovascular events

The AASM’s 2020 position statement describes an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events after the acute transition from standard time to DST. The statement synthesizes accumulated population and observational evidence; it does not provide a single risk percentage that applies to every country, age group, or individual.

People with known heart disease should treat a sudden change in sleep, stress, or medication timing as a reason to follow their clinician’s instructions carefully. Clock policy is not a substitute for medical care, and a time change does not mean a cardiovascular event is inevitable.

Mood and mental health

The same AASM statement reports increased risk of mood disorders around the spring transition. Sleep restriction, altered light exposure, and disruption of daily routines can all contribute. The evidence describes a population-level association, not proof that DST causes a mood disorder in each person.

Seek prompt professional help for persistent depression, severe anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or a major change in functioning. A seasonal clock change should not be used to explain away symptoms that need evaluation.

Motor-vehicle crashes and safety

The spring transition is also associated with increased motor-vehicle-crash risk. Reduced sleep and a biologically earlier wake time can reduce alertness during the morning commute. Plan extra caution for the first days after the change: allow enough time to wake fully, avoid driving when drowsy, and use another transportation option if you cannot stay alert.

What is known—and not known—about permanent policies

The strongest evidence concerns the transition itself and the relationship between civil time and circadian biology. It is reasonable to infer that removing twice-yearly clock changes would remove transition-related sleep loss and the short-term risks observed around those dates.

However, the reviewed AASM statements do not provide a definitive randomized, long-term comparison of every health outcome under permanent standard time versus permanent DST. A permanent DST schedule would eliminate transitions but retain later clock times and darker winter mornings in many locations. A permanent standard-time schedule would also not make every person an early chronotype, eliminate shift work, or solve insufficient sleep caused by long work hours and late-night device use.

Geography matters. Sunrise and sunset vary with latitude, season, and local time-zone boundaries. The same clock policy can produce different morning-light conditions in northern and southern communities. The AASM’s recommendation is therefore a population-level policy judgment based on biology and available evidence, not a guarantee of identical effects in every region.

How to adjust after a spring-forward change

Use the following plan when clocks move ahead. It is designed to advance your body clock while protecting sleep opportunity.

  1. Start before the transition if possible. Move bedtime and wake time gradually toward the new schedule over several days. Small, consistent changes are easier to tolerate than trying to shift an entire hour in one night.
  2. Protect at least seven hours of sleep opportunity. The AASM/Sleep Research Society recommendation is a regular minimum for the average healthy adult. Go to bed early enough that the new wake time does not simply cut sleep short.
  3. Get bright outdoor light soon after waking. Morning light is the most useful environmental cue in this situation. Spend time outside shortly after getting up when conditions are safe and practical.
  4. Keep the wake time consistent. Large differences between weekday and weekend schedules can prolong social jet lag. A stable wake time gives the circadian system a clearer signal.
  5. Make the bedroom favorable for sleep. Keep it dark, quiet, and comfortably cool, and reserve the bed for sleep rather than extended wakefulness.
  6. Use a sunrise alarm if morning darkness is a problem. A dawn-simulation alarm can provide a gradual light cue before the alarm time. It is a convenience device, not a medical treatment, and it should not be treated as a substitute for outdoor light or clinical care.
  7. Be conservative with driving and other hazardous tasks. If you feel sleepy, delay the task, take a safe alternative, or obtain help rather than relying on willpower.

What to do if the adjustment does not work

If sleep remains poor after your schedule has had time to settle, check whether another factor is maintaining the problem: an inconsistent wake time, insufficient time in bed, an untreated medical condition, medication effects, alcohol near bedtime, or a work schedule that conflicts with your biological timing. Do not keep changing the clock schedule every night; that makes the timing signal less predictable.

People who may need extra planning

Children and teenagers

Young people often have fixed school start times and may already be sleeping less than needed. Families can move bedtime and wake time gradually before the spring change, keep morning light consistent, and watch for unusual daytime sleepiness or school-performance changes.

Older adults and people with medical conditions

Older adults and people with cardiovascular, psychiatric, neurologic, or sleep conditions may be more sensitive to sleep loss. Keep medication and meal schedules aligned with the instructions from a clinician or pharmacist; do not independently change dosing times because the clock changed.

Shift workers

Shift workers face circadian disruption that is larger and more frequent than the twice-yearly civilian clock change. A policy change alone will not remove night-work demands. Use employer-provided scheduling guidance and seek sleep-medicine advice if alertness problems persist.

People with delayed or advanced sleep timing

A person whose natural sleep timing is unusually late or early may experience the same clock change differently from a typical schedule. Morning light can advance timing, but the appropriate intensity and timing may depend on the individual. A sleep clinician can assess suspected circadian-rhythm disorders rather than assuming the problem is ordinary DST adjustment.

When to seek medical evaluation

Contact a healthcare professional if insomnia, severe daytime sleepiness, or impaired functioning persists beyond the adjustment period, or if symptoms recur with every clock change. Evaluation is particularly important for loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, morning headaches, uncontrolled mood symptoms, or episodes of falling asleep while driving.

Urgent care is appropriate for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, sudden neurologic symptoms, or thoughts of self-harm. Those symptoms require medical attention regardless of the time on the clock.

How to interpret the policy debate

The question is often framed as “standard time or DST?” but there are two separate decisions: whether clocks should change seasonally and which clock should remain if they do not. The evidence most clearly supports ending the seasonal switches. Among permanent options, the AASM favors standard time because it better matches circadian biology and natural light timing, while acknowledging that long-term comparative evidence is not complete.

For an individual, the practical priority is consistent sleep timing, adequate sleep opportunity, and appropriately timed morning light. A clock label cannot compensate for chronic sleep restriction, untreated sleep apnea, irregular shift work, or a mental-health condition. Those problems require their own solutions.
