Standard Chartered says eligible institutional clients can now custody Ripple USD (RLUSD) on the XRP Ledger through its Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) branch. A separate plan to make RLUSD eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products is still in development; the announcement gives no launch date or product list.
What Standard Chartered has launched—and what it has not
The 12 October 2026 announcement distinguishes a live custody service from planned collateral work. Standard Chartered’s DIFC Branch supports custody of RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger for eligible institutional clients. The proposed LMAX integration is not described as live. Standard Chartered, Ripple and LMAX Group say they are working to make RLUSD eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products and extend Standard Chartered’s collateral-mirroring model to LMAX. They do not name the qualifying products, supported client jurisdictions or an implementation date.

How the planned collateral mirroring is supposed to work
Under the parties’ description, the RLUSD would remain in custody rather than being transferred directly to the trading venue. Its eligible collateral value would instead be mirrored to LMAX. The firms say this approach is expected to offer clients more flexibility, reduce transfer-related operational risk, optimise counterparty exposure and improve capital efficiency. How the arrangement fits the earlier LMAX partnership
LMAX and Ripple announced a multi-year partnership on 15 January 2026 to integrate RLUSD as a core collateral asset across LMAX institutional trading infrastructure. That release discussed spot crypto, perpetual futures, CFD margin funding and settlement use, and said Ripple would provide $150 million in financing for LMAX’s long-term cross-asset growth strategy. The October announcement follows another step in the relationship: on 1 July 2026, LMAX announced pilot prime-brokerage trades with Standard Chartered involving spot Bitcoin and Ether. The trades used T+1 settlement through the bank’s UK branch and custody settlement through its DIFC platform. This pilot involved Bitcoin and Ether, not the proposed RLUSD collateral integration. What RLUSD is—and how it differs from XRP
RLUSD and XRP are separate assets. Ripple describes RLUSD as a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, while XRP is the XRP Ledger’s native cryptocurrency with a market-set value. Ripple’s RLUSD FAQ
Ripple says RLUSD is issued by a New York trust supervised by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), backed by cash, U.S. Treasuries and government money market funds, and supported by monthly independent attestations. What the announcements do not establish
- When RLUSD collateral mirroring for LMAX will go live.
- Which specific LMAX products will accept RLUSD collateral under this arrangement.
- Which client jurisdictions will be supported.
- Whether the planned model produces measurable changes in operational risk, counterparty exposure or capital use.
- How many clients use the newly announced custody service; no independent usage statistics are given.
