There is no verified $185 million Standard Bank placement in OPay. Bloomberg reported on August 18, 2026, citing people familiar with the matter, that Standard Bank Group was in talks to buy a stake in OPay ahead of a possible U.S. IPO. The report did not confirm a deal, its amount or terms, or a filed IPO.
What did Bloomberg report about Standard Bank and OPay?
Bloomberg News, in a report carried by Bloomberg Law on August 18, 2026, said Standard Bank Group Ltd. was discussing a possible purchase of a stake in Opay Digital Services Ltd. The distinction matters: talks about buying a stake are not the same as a completed investment or a placement. The report did not establish that Standard Bank had won an allocation, signed a definitive agreement, or completed a transaction.
Is the $185 million amount confirmed?
No. The Bloomberg report did not give a transaction amount, and the available sources do not verify a $185 million OPay investment by Standard Bank. The amount should not be treated as a deal term. An unrelated Standard Bank and NAMFISA property-development loan facility announced in Namibia in 2024 also involved a figure of N$185 million; it is not evidence of an OPay transaction. Is OPay preparing for a U.S. IPO?
Bloomberg reported that OPay was preparing for a possible U.S. initial public offering and working with Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase on a possible New York listing. These details were reported, not confirmed in the available sources by OPay or the named banks. The report does not establish that OPay filed for an offering, set a timetable, or completed a listing.
What is known about OPay’s ownership and valuation?
Opera Limited’s 2025 Form 20-F, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, provides dated context but does not confirm Standard Bank’s reported discussions. Opera disclosed a 9.5% ownership interest in OPay as of December 31, 2025, and a $294.6 million carrying amount for that investment. The filing’s estimated equity-value scenarios ranged from $0.2 billion to $6.0 billion. Those were inputs to Opera’s valuation methodology, not a reported OPay valuation or a price implied by a Standard Bank transaction. They should not be used to infer the terms of the reported talks.

What does OPay do?
OPay is a privately held payments fintech associated with Nigeria. Opera said it incubated OPay in 2018 and described its Nigerian payments, agent and merchant business in a March 3, 2021 investor-relations post. Opera reported that OPay’s gross transaction volume grew 4.5 times during 2020, exceeding $2 billion in December alone, and that its point-of-sale terminals represented 20% of offline payments in Nigeria at year-end. What would confirm a deal?
A confirmed investment would require stronger evidence than a report of ongoing discussions—for example, an announcement or filing from the companies or a later report establishing that the transaction closed. Until then, the amount, stake percentage, valuation, price and closing date remain unestablished. The same caution applies to the IPO: a reported preparation effort is not a filed or completed offering.
