For judging a business as a group, start with its consolidated financial statements. IFRS 10 treats the parent and controlled subsidiaries as one economic entity, so consolidated assets, liabilities, income, expenses and cash flows show the group’s operating performance and resources. Read the parent’s standalone (also called separate or parent-only) statements alongside them when you need to assess what the legal parent itself owns, owes, earns or can access. Neither set is universally “the right one”; each answers a different investor question.
What “consolidated” and “standalone” results mean
Consolidated statements are the group view
Under IFRS 10, consolidation is based on control. When a parent controls one or more subsidiaries, it generally presents the parent and those subsidiaries as if they were a single economic entity, subject to the standard’s exceptions. The consolidated statement of financial position therefore combines group assets, liabilities and equity. The consolidated income statement combines the group’s income and expenses, while the consolidated cash-flow statement presents cash generated and used across the group.
This is the view that normally answers questions such as: Is the overall business growing? Is the group profitable? How much cash does the group generate? What resources and obligations exist across the controlled businesses? It also captures the interests of non-controlling shareholders where subsidiaries are not wholly owned, so the notes and equity section must be read carefully.

IAS 27 addresses separate financial statements. They report the legal entity that is preparing them—usually the parent—without presenting every controlled subsidiary line by line. Separate statements may be published in addition to consolidated statements, or may be required or permitted by local rules in particular circumstances.

In this view, the parent records its own cash, receivables, debt, payables, income and expenses. Its interests in subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates are accounted for using one of the methods IAS 27 permits for the relevant investment: cost, IFRS 9, or the IAS 28 equity method, as applicable. An investment balance is therefore not the same thing as adding the investee’s individual assets and liabilities to the parent’s lines.
Which figures should an investor use?
Use the statements that match the question you are asking. The following framework puts the usual starting point beside the qualification that prevents a misleading conclusion.
| Investor question | Figures to start with | Checks before drawing a conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Is the overall group growing, profitable or cash-generative? | Consolidated statements | Confirm the consolidation scope, reporting period, accounting policies and material non-controlling interests. |
| What resources and obligations sit at the listed or legal parent? | Standalone/separate statements | Inspect the parent’s own assets and liabilities, the investment-accounting method and significant-investee disclosures. |
| Can the parent itself meet obligations or distribute funds? | Standalone statements, interpreted with consolidated context | Look at the parent’s own cash, debt and other obligations. Do not assume cash held by subsidiaries is freely available to the parent. |
| Why do parent-only profit or net assets differ from group figures? | Compare both presentations and their notes | Identify the investment method, the consolidation perimeter and any applicable exception. |
For most operating and valuation analysis, consolidated revenue, operating profit, assets, liabilities and cash flow are the sensible first view because they describe the controlled business as a whole. Standalone figures then provide a legal-entity perspective that can reveal parent-level funding, guarantees, dividends and restrictions that a group total can obscure.

How consolidation changes the numbers
Control determines the perimeter
IFRS 10 establishes the principles for preparing consolidated statements when an entity controls another entity. The parent does not simply choose which investees look attractive to include. The reported perimeter follows the control assessment, and the notes should explain significant judgments and the entities included.
Because the perimeter is entity-specific, two companies with similar-looking investments can report different consolidated totals. An investee may be controlled in one arrangement and not controlled in another. An investor comparing issuers should therefore read the consolidation policy and the list of significant subsidiaries rather than infer scope from a company name or ownership percentage alone.
Intragroup amounts are presented as one-entity amounts
The single-economic-entity concept means that transactions and balances between entities inside the consolidated group are not treated as external group activity in the final presentation. The consolidated statements are designed to show the group’s dealings with outside parties, while the notes explain material relationships and judgments. This is why consolidated revenue, receivables, debt or profit will not necessarily equal the sum of every separate company’s published totals.

Non-controlling interests still matter
When a subsidiary is not wholly owned, the consolidated statements include the subsidiary’s assets, liabilities, income and expenses, while the equity and profit attributable to non-controlling shareholders are shown separately. A group can therefore report all of a subsidiary’s operations without all of the resulting equity belonging to the parent’s shareholders. Check the non-controlling-interest lines before treating consolidated profit or net assets as entirely attributable to the parent.

How separate-statement investment accounting creates differences
Cost method
Under IAS 27, cost is one permitted basis for investments within the standard’s scope. The parent’s balance sheet may show an investment at its cost, subject to applicable impairment requirements, while the subsidiary’s underlying property, debt, inventory, employees and cash appear only in consolidated statements. Dividends or other distributions can affect the parent’s separate income according to the applicable accounting requirements, but the parent-only presentation is not a line-by-line operating statement for the subsidiary.
IFRS 9 method
IAS 27 also permits accounting under IFRS 9 where applicable. The resulting measurement and income pattern can differ materially from both cost accounting and consolidation. Changes in fair value or other IFRS 9 effects may appear in the parent’s separate accounts even though the consolidated statements present the controlled business through its underlying assets, liabilities, income and expenses.
IAS 28 equity method
The IAS 28 equity method is another permitted approach for investments in the relevant circumstances. Instead of replacing the investment with each underlying asset and liability, the parent generally recognises its share of the investee’s results and adjusts the investment balance for qualifying changes. That produces a different visual relationship between the parent’s investment line and its reported share of earnings than consolidation does.
These permitted methods mean that a standalone investment balance, standalone net income and consolidated net assets are not interchangeable metrics. A difference is not, by itself, evidence of an error or of weaker performance. First identify the method disclosed under IAS 27 and then compare like with like.

- Confirm the reporting basis. Check that the document is labelled consolidated and identify the accounting framework, reporting period and comparative period.
- Read the consolidation policy and scope notes. Look for the definition of control, significant subsidiaries, changes in ownership and any entities excluded under an applicable exception.
- Assess revenue and operating performance. Use consolidated revenue, operating profit and margins to evaluate the controlled businesses collectively. Then read segment and geographic disclosures to see where the result was generated.
- Examine the statement of financial position. Review consolidated cash, borrowings, working capital, goodwill, other intangible assets and provisions. Separate parent guarantees or restrictions may require a return to the notes and standalone statements.
- Follow cash, not only profit. Compare consolidated operating cash flow with capital expenditure, acquisitions, debt service and financing flows. The consolidated cash-flow statement covers group movements, not necessarily cash that the parent can immediately use.
- Adjust for non-controlling interests. Distinguish amounts attributable to the parent’s shareholders from amounts belonging to other owners of subsidiaries.
- Check comparability. Investigate acquisitions, disposals, changes in control, discontinued operations, restatements and accounting-policy changes before interpreting a year-to-year movement.
Using standalone statements to test the parent’s own financial capacity
A listed parent can look strong on a consolidated basis while the legal parent has a different liquidity and funding profile. The standalone statements isolate the entity that may issue shares, borrow directly, receive dividends or provide guarantees. They are therefore useful for analysing parent-level obligations, even when they are not the best measure of group operating performance.
Questions to ask of the parent balance sheet
- How much cash is held by the parent itself, rather than by subsidiaries?
- What borrowings, lease obligations, payables and other liabilities are legally owed by the parent?
- Are significant assets investments in subsidiaries, loans to group companies or other financial instruments rather than operating assets?
- Does the parent have restrictions, covenants or guarantees that affect the movement of cash?
- What dividends, interest or management fees from subsidiaries support the parent’s separate income?
These questions do not establish that subsidiary cash is unavailable. Availability depends on the group’s legal structure, local law, financing agreements, board actions and other facts. The analytical safeguard is simply to avoid treating a consolidated cash total as automatically transferable to the parent.
Parent profit is not automatically group profit
Standalone profit may include dividends, interest, fees, fair-value movements or equity-method results that do not resemble the consolidated income statement. Conversely, a profitable subsidiary may contribute little parent-only income if it retains earnings or if the parent uses a method that does not recognise the same items in the same period. Use the notes to identify what generated standalone profit before using it as a trend or valuation measure.

| Source of divergence | What you may see | How to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Different reporting scope | Consolidated statements include controlled subsidiaries; standalone statements show the parent and investment lines. | Read the control assessment, subsidiary list and IAS 27 investment disclosures. |
| Investment-accounting method | The parent reports a cost, IFRS 9 or equity-method investment amount instead of underlying subsidiary line items. | Find the accounting-policy note and determine whether the method is consistent across periods. |
| Non-controlling interests | Group profit or net assets include a subsidiary, but part is attributed to other owners. | Reconcile total consolidated amounts with amounts attributable to parent shareholders. |
| Intragroup balances and transactions | Separate-company totals do not add directly to consolidated totals. | Review eliminations, related-party notes and changes in group structure. |
| Different legal obligations | Parent debt or guarantees may not match group borrowings, and group cash may be held in subsidiaries. | Read debt, guarantees, restrictions and liquidity disclosures at both levels. |
| Applicable exception | An investment entity or another specified circumstance may change how a subsidiary is presented. | Read the consolidation-policy note and the relevant standard disclosures rather than assuming line-by-line consolidation. |
Investment-entity and other scope exceptions
IFRS 10 contains an exception for particular subsidiaries of investment entities. The existence of that exception is a reminder that “controlled” does not always mean every investee will appear line by line in the way a conventional operating parent presents its subsidiaries. The accounting policy and notes should identify the entity’s status, the investments affected and the measurement applied.
The EU-endorsed text uses the same single-economic-entity concept and describes separate statements as additional statements subject to specified exceptions. It is an example of a regional endorsed text, not a complete statement of every jurisdiction’s filing rules. Local securities regulation can affect whether parent-only statements are available, how they are labelled and when they must be filed.
A practical workflow for comparing both presentations
- Collect the right documents. Obtain the consolidated report, the separate or standalone report if issued, and the accompanying notes for the same reporting date.
- Match periods and policies. Confirm that both documents cover the same year-end, currency, accounting framework and presentation basis.
- Map the group. List the parent, controlled subsidiaries, major associates and joint ventures. Note acquisitions, disposals and changes in ownership during the period.
- Identify the parent’s investment method. Record whether each material investment is carried at cost, under IFRS 9 or using the IAS 28 equity method, as applicable.
- Separate operating from holding-company items. In standalone accounts, distinguish operating revenue and expenses from dividends, interest, fees, fair-value changes and investment remeasurements.
- Reconcile ownership. Check non-controlling interests and the portion of earnings or net assets attributable to the parent’s shareholders.
- Trace liquidity and restrictions. Compare parent cash and debt with consolidated cash and debt, then read guarantees, covenants, trapped-cash or distribution restrictions and related-party disclosures.
- Write the conclusion in two sentences. State what the consolidated figures say about the group, then state what the standalone figures say about the parent. Do not collapse those conclusions into one unexplained ratio.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using standalone revenue to judge the operating group
A holding parent may have little or no direct trading revenue while its subsidiaries generate the business’s sales. Standalone revenue can therefore understate the scale of the controlled group. Use consolidated revenue for group operations and standalone income for the parent’s own activities and receipts.

Adding parent and subsidiary numbers yourself
Manual addition can double-count intragroup balances, ignore eliminations and miss non-controlling interests. The consolidated statements already apply the group presentation; use the notes to understand the adjustments rather than rebuilding the totals from separate-company lines.

Treating the investment line as the subsidiary’s market value
A standalone investment recorded at cost, under IFRS 9 or with the equity method is an accounting measure, not automatically a current sale value. Compare the method and disclosures before using it in a valuation or leverage calculation.
Assuming consolidated cash belongs to the parent
Cash can sit in subsidiaries with their own creditors, minority owners, regulatory requirements or contractual restrictions. Parent liquidity analysis must start with the standalone cash and obligations, then consider the legal and financial links to subsidiaries.
Ignoring the accounting-period mismatch
A change in subsidiary ownership, a newly acquired business or a disposal can alter the consolidated perimeter. A year-on-year movement may therefore reflect scope as well as performance. Check acquisition, disposal and control-change notes before attributing the change to operating execution.
Comparing different bases across issuers
One issuer’s headline figure may be consolidated while another’s is standalone, or two issuers may use different permitted methods for separate investments. Label every metric by basis and verify policies before ranking companies.
When standalone figures deserve priority
Standalone statements should move to the front of your analysis when the question concerns the parent legal entity: debt repayment at the parent, dividend capacity, solvency of the issuer itself, guarantees it has given, or the value and accounting treatment of its investments. Creditors lending directly to the parent and investors assessing holding-company liquidity have a particularly strong reason to inspect this view.

That priority does not make standalone statements a substitute for consolidated performance analysis. A parent can have substantial investment assets but little direct operating activity, while the group can be operationally strong but structurally complex. The two perspectives are complementary.
When consolidated figures deserve priority
Consolidated results should lead when you are assessing the economic group’s sales, margins, capital employed, leverage, cash generation, segment mix or competitive performance. They are also the natural starting point for analysing a parent whose value depends mainly on controlled operating subsidiaries. After that first pass, use standalone disclosures to test how the group’s resources and obligations are connected to the parent.
An issuer-specific interpretation example
Suppose a parent owns a controlled operating subsidiary and publishes both sets of statements. The consolidated report shows the subsidiary’s factories, employees, customer revenue, borrowings and cash flows together with the parent’s own items, adjusted for the group presentation. The standalone report instead shows the parent’s investment in that subsidiary, the parent’s own financing and any dividends, interest or fees recognised by the parent.
If the subsidiary reinvests its earnings, consolidated profit can rise without a matching increase in the parent’s separate cash. If the parent records the investment at cost, its standalone investment balance will not move in lockstep with the subsidiary’s individual assets and liabilities. If the parent uses the equity method, its separate income may include a share of the subsidiary’s result without displaying the subsidiary’s sales and expenses line by line. None of these outcomes is inherently inconsistent; each follows from a different reporting scope and accounting policy.
The correct analysis is to describe the group’s performance from the consolidated statements, then test parent-level liquidity and claims on subsidiary value from the standalone statements and notes.
Jurisdiction, availability and comparability cautions
The IFRS framework explains the distinction, but it does not establish every country’s filing timetable, document availability or securities-law requirement. Whether an issuer publishes separate statements, whether they are audited or filed in a particular format, and which exemptions apply can depend on jurisdiction and the entity’s circumstances. The EU-endorsed text is evidence of a regional adoption, not a global filing rule.
Before making a jurisdiction-specific claim, identify the issuer’s stated accounting basis and the local filing context. If only one presentation is available, do not infer the absent figures; use the disclosures that explain investments, guarantees, restrictions and group structure, and state the limitation in your analysis.
Quick Recap
A concise decision rule
- Question about the business as a whole: begin with consolidated statements.
- Question about the parent company’s own balance sheet or obligations: read standalone statements.
- Question about a difference between the two: inspect scope, investment method, non-controlling interests, eliminations and exceptions.
- Question about cash available to the parent: use standalone cash and liabilities, then verify legal and contractual access to subsidiary resources.
- Question about comparability across issuers: confirm that every figure uses the same period, accounting basis and consolidation perimeter.
