Desktop apps should not kill a process just because its PID appears in a lock file or its name looks familiar. A safe startup check combines app-owned coordination, a verified process identity, and a graceful request to exit; forced termination is an escalation only when the app can identify the process confidently and can tolerate an abrupt stop.
What makes a process “stale”?
“Stale” is an app-defined state, not a portable operating-system fact. It usually means a previous instance should no longer own a resource or prevent a new launch from becoming the primary instance. A process can still be alive and responsive while the app’s coordination data is outdated; conversely, a PID in a record may now refer to a different process.
Define the condition your app needs to resolve—for example, whether another instance currently owns a single-instance resource—and what evidence is sufficient to establish ownership. A process name alone is weak evidence, and a PID is an identifier, not proof that the process is the app instance you intend to manage.
How should startup detection and shutdown work?
Use app-controlled coordination to decide whether another instance is active, then communicate with that instance before considering termination. The following sequence is a practical engineering design, not a protocol prescribed identically by Windows, macOS, and Linux.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Acquire coordination atomically. Use the app’s single-instance mechanism so two launches cannot both conclude that they are primary. If another instance holds the coordination state, do not treat that state alone as authorization to kill a process.
- Verify the instance. Contact the candidate through an app-specific IPC or coordination channel, or validate its identity using suitable platform mechanisms. Do not rely only on a process name or a recorded PID.
- Request an orderly exit. Ask the verified instance to finish work and release its resources through the app’s own shutdown path. This gives it an opportunity to save state and clean up.
- Wait and confirm exit. Allow a bounded wait appropriate to the app, then check the target using a supported process handle or identity mechanism. A timeout is an app policy; the platform documentation cited here does not establish a universal value.
- Escalate only if justified. If the process remains alive, assess whether abrupt termination is safe for its state and any helper processes it owns. Use a platform-appropriate mechanism and avoid broad process-name matching.
- Update coordination after resolution. Once the previous instance has exited or the app has otherwise resolved ownership, acquire or update the coordination state and continue initialization.
What can Linux process checks prove?
Linux kill(2) sends a signal to a process identified by a positive PID, subject to permission checks. Calling kill(pid, 0) sends no signal; it checks whether the process exists and whether the caller has permission to signal it. It does not establish that the PID belongs to the expected app.
PID-based operations also have a race risk: the process associated with a PID can change between checking it and acting on it. Linux offers pid file descriptors as a way to refer to a task more robustly. pidfd_open(2) returns a file descriptor referring to a task, and pidfd_send_signal(2) can signal through that descriptor. The Linux manual pages describe pidfd signaling as a way to avoid races associated with traditional interfaces that identify a target by PID.

Check the runtime kernel and the system’s library support before depending on these interfaces. The Linux manual pages date pidfd_open to Linux 5.3 and pidfd_send_signal to Linux 5.1. A pidfd improves the stability of the process reference; it does not, by itself, prove that the referenced task is an instance your app owns. That ownership still needs app-specific validation.

What changes on Windows?
Windows desktop apps built with the Windows App SDK do not inherit the automatic suspension and termination behavior associated with UWP apps when they move to the background. They continue running until the user closes them or the process exits, so recovery from unexpected shutdown and state preservation need to be handled by the app.

Microsoft’s Win32 guidance on terminating a process warns: “Do not terminate a process unless its threads are in known states.” Forced termination can prevent normal cleanup. It also does not automatically terminate child processes. An app that starts helpers therefore needs to track and manage those processes explicitly; terminating a parent is not a complete cleanup strategy.
How should macOS apps manage background processes?
Apple’s guidance puts responsibility on apps to stop background processing when the app quits or to let a person stop it. For work that must outlive the foreground app, Apple recommends considering XPC or a launch agent managed with SMAppService. These approaches make the relationship between the app and background work clearer and give users a way to manage the background item.

Build lifecycle ownership into the architecture rather than searching for similarly named processes at startup. For app-created helpers, use an app-specific quit request or an appropriate service model; the startup check should manage work the app owns, not unrelated processes that happen to look similar.

| Approach | What it establishes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PID-only check or signal | Linux kill(pid, 0) checks existence and permission; it does not prove app ownership. |
Simple, but PID reuse and check-to-action races make it a weak basis for deciding that termination is safe. |
| Stable process reference, such as a Linux pidfd | A pidfd refers to a task and supports signaling through that reference. | Reduces PID-targeting race concerns where supported, but does not replace app-specific ownership checks. |
| App-level graceful shutdown request | An app-controlled channel can ask a verified instance to finish work and exit normally. | Allows cleanup, but depends on the instance being reachable and responsive. |
| Forced operating-system termination | Requests that the operating system end a process without relying on its normal shutdown path. | May interrupt work or cleanup; Windows guidance cautions against terminating processes whose thread states are unknown, and child processes require separate management. |
| Managed background service on macOS | XPC or a launch agent managed with SMAppService can clarify ownership and lifecycle for work that outlives the main UI. |
Requires designing around the service model rather than treating the helper as an untracked process to kill at launch. |
What should a cross-platform implementation preserve?
A shared startup policy can define the app-level goals—single-instance ownership, identity validation, graceful shutdown, and escalation rules—but the process operations must respect each operating system’s semantics. In particular, do not assume that a permission/existence check is identity proof, that terminating a parent cleans up its children, or that background work has the same lifecycle on every platform.

Keep the coordination protocol app-owned and make the shutdown request explicit. If the instance cannot be verified, treat the situation as unresolved rather than killing a candidate based only on a stale record. If it can be verified but is unresponsive, make the escalation decision based on whether abrupt exit is acceptable for that app and its managed helpers.
